We’ve got a great Reader’s Ride for you this month, featuring the Fiat Coupes of Frazer and Karen Myers. They took part in the 20th Anniversary celebrations of the Coupe in Turin last year, with visits to the historic Fiat factory and the Pininfarina museum. They share their experience with us on pages 12 and 13. Over in the UK, DVLA have released a list of cars with only one example registered for UK roads. Although some cars won’t be missed, there are a few surprises in there. In a shake up of our motorsport section, we have changed the format giving Richard O’Rourke free reign for his interesting and informative views summarising the major races of the month, rather than the more formal F1 race reports. We think it works much better and covers a wider spectrum of events. We’ve more news about the Ferrari Land project in the pipeline for Spain and find another 5 Porsches you may have forgotten about. DB4 Series IV Vantage Convertible

DB5 4.2 litre Sports Saloon Rolls-Royce Dawn. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars have confirmed the name for their new Wraith soft-top, the Rolls Dawn. Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, Rolls’ CEO said "Dawn is a beautiful new open-top motor car with a name that suggests the fresh opportunities that every new day holds – an awakening, an opening up of one’s senses and a burst of sunshine". Rolls-Royce have used the name before; it built 28 dropheadbodied Silver Dawns from 1950 until 1954 and they remain one of the rarest Rolls on the road. Look out for the new one on sale from next year.

Aston Martin Auction. A sale at Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire last month featured more than 50 cars and 170 lots of automobilia, with 25% of cars left-hand drive specification. It was the largest in the 16-year history of the event, raising £10million. A 1966 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible in Vantage specification was the highestpriced car of the sale, fetching £1,524,700, while a 1962 DB4 Series IV Vantage Convertible, originally the property of Sir Peter Ustinov, sold for almost the same amount at £1,513,500. A 1964 DB5 4.2 litre Sports Saloon, the model James Bond drove in Goldfinger, sold for £595,100.

EU to Introduce eCall Alert Device. All new cars sold in the EU from March 2018 will come fitted with an automatic emergency call system to help ambulance crews get to road accidents faster. First proposed in 2012, the legislation became bogged down in privacy concerns. Following negotiations it was agreed the system would only share the most basic information about accidents; type of vehicle, fuel used, the time of the accident, exact location and the number of passengers involved. Combined data from all vehicles involved in an accident would allow emergency services to respond appropriately to the size and severity of accidents and also help address language barriers, with callers in foreign countries often not able to communicate with emergency services or give their location. Installing eCall would add around €100 to the cost of a new car and the technology can also be retrofitted into existing cars, however this will not be mandatory. The European Commission will assess the success of the system in spring 2021.

The Original Silver Dawn

Number Plate Sells for £233,000. The DVLA had a bit of good car-ma after a woman paid £233,000 for KR15 HNA. It beat the previous record of £100k held by another Hindu-related registration, MR51 NGH, set in 2006. KR15 HNA is now the most expensive modern plate ever sold by the DVLA. Under DVLA rules, motorists cannot put a plate on a car which makes it look newer and ‘15’ plate cars only went on sale in March. Another motorist paid almost £100,000 for the plate 458 S to go on his Ferrari. We reported last year that John Collins, who runs Ferrari dealership Talacrest, holds the record for any UK registration plate, paying £518,000 for 25 O. DVLA have also released a 42 page document listing number plates they have banned. See their website for the list dvla.gov.uk

Fiat Coupe 20th Anniversary Turin, Italy

Last year Frazer and Karen Myers took part in the Fiat Coupe 20th Anniversary Celebration. Over 140 cars made the trip to Italy for the four day event and they share their experience with us. Day One: We met at the Pininfarina Museum in Turin and after a presentation in the auditorium, the current Chief Designer introduced the man who had designed the retro interior. Framed original drawings of the sketches were on the walls showing that little changed from design to production. A tour around the Pininfarina private collection was next. The cars on show were breathtaking and included the windscreen-free Pininfarina Sergio Ferrari tribute (left).

Day Two: A trip to the Lingotto rooftop test track (Fiat's former factory) to display the cars and the chance to drive around half the track. There was a surprise visit by Chris Bangle, the man who designed the Coupe. He stayed all day, signed car dashboards and answered many questions, including giving an answer to the urban myth that is always mentioned in Fiat Coupe gatherings: That the headlight covers were modelled on his wife´s cleavage...and yes they were! In order to avoid the need for problematic pop-up headlights.

Day Three: A visit to the Local Palace, the Reggia di Venaria and Royal Gardens. Day Four: Fiat Test Track Entry to the Mirafiori track for some parade laps behind a safety car.

Karen bought her brand new yellow Coupe in Dubai in 1997 before meeting Frazer. The couple now live in France spending their winters in Spain. When Frazer looked for the perfect car to travel between the two countries and transport their three dogs, he decided to go for a Coupe too and bought his blue Plus edition car in January 2014. Both cars have a 2.0 litre 20V turbo engine and Frazer enjoys maintaining and tinkering on the cars. Look out for them in the area next winter.

Fiat's Lingotto factory was unique when it opened in 1923 due to its spiral assembly line that moved up through five floors of the building, with the completed cars being tested on the banked rooftop test track. It was the biggest automobile factory in Europe and the second largest in the world. In 1982 the factory was officially closed and the building now houses a shopping centre, theatre and hotel.

The Fiat Coupe was launched at the Brussels Motor Show in 1993. Production ran from 1993 until 2000, with over 72,000 cars being made. The four cylinder, 2.0 L 16V engine was available as a turbo and normally aspirated version which came from the Lancia Delta Integrale, winner of the World Rally Championship a record six times. In 1996 the engine choice changed to a 1.8 L 16V engine, a 2.0-litre 5-cylinder 20V and a 5-cylinder 2.0-litre 20V turbo. 2000 saw the release of the last version, a Plus model featuring new side skirts, wheels and almost exact copies of Plus Recaro seats. The 2.0-litre 20V turbo model reaches 0-60 (0–100 km/h) in 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph).

A lighthearted romp through the ups and downs of 40 years of car ownership. Part 2. The Toyota Starlet nearly came to a sorry end when, on a trip to a football match in Sligo, I took a wrong turning and ended up on a bumpy B road which contained a hidden 90 right. I had to resort to the handbrake to scramble round but not without giving the left hand sill a clout with a heap of gravel. Soon after, the Starlet was traded for a bright blue Fiat Ritmo Twin Cam. The rorty sound of the engine was enough to get my attention but, apart from that, it was a really fine car and very much underrated in my opinion. Fiat had a reputation for unreliability and rust but neither affliction visited me and I am convinced that a modicum of care and attention was all that was needed to ward off the evil spirits. Around this time I had become co-owner of the most unusual car I ever had. My friend, Dick O’Brien, had built a Ford Sidevalve Special in 1958 and used it for many years until it was eventually sold in the late seventies. The car wasn’t seen for years when suddenly word filtered through that it was lurking in a dishevelled state in the back of a local garage. Dick and I went to investigate and found it, minus engine and bits of bodywork and I felt such pity for the poor thing that I bought it. The deal was that I would pay for the car and Dick would rebuild it to it’s original spec and we would then use it for historic racing, classics rallies or simply taking it for a spin on sunny summer days. The car was indeed rebuilt to a very high standard and Dick felt so proud of his achievement that I felt it was only right that he should be the sole owner considering that he had built it from the ground up all those years ago. I sold him my share but that was not the end of my association with the Firbog Special as I partnered him on many occasions culminating in a trip to Burford in Oxfordshire in 2011 for the UK Ford Sidevalve Clubs annual meet. The car also had a very successful racing career in the Historic class in Modello Park Race Circuit, regularly battling it out with Frank Nuttall’s similar car at the tail end of the field and sometimes surprising the quicker MGs, Triumphs and the like. Every now and then in my car owning career I purchased cars which were totally out of context and, while they may have been fine cars in their own right, were not right for me. The Renault 9 Louisianne which replaced the Fiat was one such example. I was attracted by the green and silver colour scheme and the trade in deal being offered against the financially iffy Fiat. This was the first of many deals I struck with my friend John Dennis, a fellow Cobhman and rally enthusiast who would go on to become Irish Rally Champion in 1985. I had done a livery job on his R11 Turbo which was sponsored by the local Renault agents and before I knew it I was driving away in the 9. Not for long though, as the lack of power and the soggy suspension soon wore me down and I went back to JD who found me a year old, hardly used, (protective plastic still on the doors!) silver Peugeot 205GTi.

The little Pug is legendary and I feel genuine pity for anyone who hasn’t driven one because it provides a driver/car interaction bordering on the surreal. You felt you could do anything with the car and it would respond and, so long as you didn’t overstep the limit, that was the case. Fun, fun and more fun and even now, thirty years later, it brings a smile to my face. I was now working for Motoring News as their Irish rallies correspondent and this entailed travelling the length and breath of Ireland reporting on and photographing the International and National championships. The 205GTi took it all in it’s stride and I never tired of driving that little car. By now I had also taken to playing golf (where I got the time God only knows) and when the time came to change the 205 I decided to go for something more practical with room for all the golf gear. Wrong decision and along came wrong car number two, a Peugeot 306 1.6 Sport. I thought it would be like a big brother to my beloved GTi but it turned out more like it’s maiden aunt. True, it had enough room for the golf equipment but that was it’s only saving grace. I vowed I would never again buy a car for the wrong reason. Cars are meant to be driven, not for carrying stuff. If you want to carry stuff, buy a van. Back again to JD and this time he found me a white Honda Civic hatchback, not very fast but boy did it handle well! This car served me well for a couple of years and was replaced with another Honda, this time a four door Civic V-Tec. I now had handling plus power and practicality and besides it was red so I was back on track on my mission to drive that illusive red Italian machine. The Hondas were fine cars with exemplary build quality and lovely free revving engines and it is no wonder that they became the vehicle of choice for boy racers and car thieves. Mine were never stolen but I have to admit to the boy racer showing his ugly face occasionally, particularly while driving as Safety Car on the West Cork Rally. My quest for the Red Italian ended sooner than I expected but it didn’t manifest itself in the form of a Ferrari from Maranello but rather in that of an Alfa Romeo from Milano. As soon as I saw the first pictures of the 156 I wanted one and after a brief meeting with the local Alfa dealer (another rallying mate) the deal was done. When filling in the order form he said “no need to discuss the colour?”. “No”, I said and the word ‘red’ was never mentioned. Ten weeks later my Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 Sportivo arrived and even though it was raining on the day I collected it, it still looked amazing with it’s Rosso Corsa paintwork and red stitched black leather upholstery. They say that all true petrolheads should own at least one Alfa during their lifetime and I agree. There is an undescribable magic about them and I loved every moment of the four and a half years I drove that car. Incidentally, the longest period up until then, that I had owned any car. II Concentracion Clasicos - Alicante by Jill Carter May the 10th saw the gathering of a host of classic vehicles in Alicante for the second National Concentración organised by “Bonfire Ceramic” and the Alicante City Council in the grounds of the flea market, Calle Teulada. The only requirement for entry was that a vehicle be of at least twenty-five years of age and 364 vehicles were registered, but it is thought that others joined in after the registration was closed. The weather was kind to participants and visitors with blue skies, sunshine and a temperature in the mid-twenties with a welcome light breeze. Many different marques of cars, motor-cycles and trucks exhibited from mid-morning. Later a tour of Alicante followed, escorted by the Policia Local who controlled the traffic for an unimpeded trip. Oh what joy – no traffic lights to obey! The vehicles left the venue and toured through the City crossing the Gran Vía to the Isleta to continue on the road to the quarry to the Postiguet Canalejas, Oscar Esplá, Avenida de Aguilera, Red Bridge and back to the Gran Via. Prize-giving closed this year´s event which will be remembered as a resounding success.

2015 Formula 1 Funny old game is Formula 1. Two races in the month of May and both held on tracks on which it is virtually impossible to overtake but for different reasons. The Circuito de Cataluna in Barcelona is a fast flowing track with only one decent straight and so the aerodynamics of the modern cars dictate that they cannot get close enough to each other to make a pass. Grid position is all important therefore and so it was with Rosberg, Hamilton and Vettel filling the top three positions, just as they were at the start. Vettel did get the jump on Hamilton to take second place when the lights went out but a three stop strategy ensured that the Merc got ahead again before the finish. Carlos Sainz once again showed his maturity to finish in 9th place and once again the McLarens disappointed with retirements for Alonso and Button. On then to Monaco where it is possible to get close to the car in front but that’s it. Only a rare kamikaze move and a deep intake of breath can see an improvement in position and these are few and far between. Driver error can sometimes yield a place and sometimes clever pit strategy can prove effective but rarely do we see a team shoot themselves in the foot to the degree that Mercedes did this year. Following grid position, Hamilton led from Rosberg and Vettel and, with the risk of the spectators falling asleep, that looked it to the finish. Then Verstappen made a Mad Max move on Grosjean for tenth place and the final point, got it all wrong and slammed into the safety barrier. Thankfully he was ok but cue the Safety Car and Mercedes called Hamilton in for a tyre change. He thought the others had stopped as well and so it would be status quo on the return but Rosberg and Vettel had continued on their old tyres and so Hamilton rejoined in third where he stayed to the finish. Team boss Toto Wolff summed it up with a one word comment to Sky’s Ted Kravitz. “Oops”. Hamilton was rightly fed up but instead of telling it as it was he behaved like a child with a smacked bottom and sulked all the way home. Button (who knows how to deal with the highs and lows) scored points for McLaren in 8th place and once again Sainz snatched a point with 10th.

MotoGP Rossi still leads the championship with third place in Spain and second in France. Team mate Jorge Lorenzo scored two great wins but surprise of the season is the poor form of reigning world champion Marc Marquez on the Honda. The bike isn’t quite on the pace and Marc seems to be riding extremely hard in order to keep up. Ducati went off the boil Max Verstappen crashes in Monaco in Spain but Dovi showed up again in Le Mans with a fine third place. Some jokers say that Honda have taken their eye off the ball in their efforts to sort out the F1 WRC Kris Meeke scored his first ever WRC win engine but I doubt that and I predict a in Argentina and led home a Citroen close fight between Lorenzo and 1-2 ahead of Mads Osberg in the other Marquez for the title. DS3. Many people (myself included) thought that the Irishman would never win as a combination of bad luck and overdriving seemed to be his trademark. Early retirements by the VW’s of Ogier, Latvala and Mikkelsen helped his cause but he still held it together and avoided trouble on the very rough stages. Welshman, Elvyn Evans had a great drive to third place and his first podium in the Ford Fiesta. Ferrari Land, Spain

RNLI Receives a Rare Gift A pair of stunning vintage Ferraris worth around £8million have been gifted to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The astonishing donation was found in the will of multi-millionaire car enthusiast Richard Colton who died earlier this year aged 82.

Remember back in March 2014 we told you that Ferrari were planning to open a theme park in Spain? We were a little sceptical, but it looks like it is happening! Yes, it's due to open in 2016 in the PortAventura Resort just south of Barcelona. The park is set to have the highest and fastest vertical accelerator in Europe and the world’s �irst Ferrari-themed hotel. It’s not Ferrari’s �irst theme park; the company already operates Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, claimed to be the world’s largest indoor amusement park in the world.

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel dropped in on construction work when he was in the country for the Spanish Grand Prix. He arrived in a Ferrari California and donated a gift of a piston from his 2014 race car as well as a brick from Enzo Ferrari’s house in Maranello which will be used in a monument on site. We’re off to PortAventura this summer and will let you know what we see of the progress!

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea

Mr Colton’s dying wish was that his beloved 1960 250GT and 1967 275GTB/4 be auctioned off and the money used to build a new lifeboat named after himself and his late wife Caroline. The cars are expected to raise £6million and £2million respectively when they come under the hammer in October. The RNLI paid tribute to Mr Colton’s generosity saying was the biggest single donation it had ever received. It will be used to build at least one state-of-the-art Shannon Class rescue crafts which cost around £2million and a specialist launch tractor for another £1.5million. The rest of the money could be used to build more rescue craft or renovate and build lifeboat stations around the country. The red 250 Ferrari is one of just 167 made. It was described by experts as one of the most beautiful cars in the world and is a now a “must have” for any serious Ferrari collector.

2: Matrix laser headlights

Future laser headlights will use microscopic reflectors like a movie projector to create 420,000 individual pixels of light. This enables a ‘super precise’ anti-dazzle highbeam, capable of indicating the width of the car on the road ahead, highlighting pedestrians and even projecting navigation instructions onto the turn you need to take.

3: Swarm lighting

Although dynamic lighting elements already exist, this is a swirling, animated rear lighting ‘swarm’ that is constantly in motion, suggesting acceleration and direction of travel as well as braking and indicating.

Ride 21: Caravaca A hot and sunny day with a cool wind, perfect riding weather. A quick blast down the 'new' Autovia through Sucina had us bypassing Santomera and heading past the Emblase for our first stop at Los Perriquitos Hotel. On into Fortuna, before hanging a left onto the MU411 towards Archena, then joining the A30/N301 Autovia northwards. Exit/Salida 342 took us onto the C3314 and a great ride into Calasparra and our second rest stop; where the newest member of the group had his photo taken. Welcome to the group Ted! Suitably refreshed, we mounted up again and completed a run into Caravaca along more fast sweeping bends that flow into one another in a most enjoyable manner old chap, doncha know?! Lol!!

1: Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs)

From Archena it was Fortuna, Abanilla, La Murada then a final last 'push' along the CV900/CV910 and home. It’s worth noting that Moratalla neighbours Caravaca and worth a visit (we didn’t have time on this trip) to see the scenery and plethora of wildlife including boars, Ibex etc and I've yet to ride there without seeing at least one Short-toed Eagle (it's their name, NOT a disability!). The town is steeped in history, the most obvious evidence of this being the Gothic 'Castillo Forteleza' built by the military in the 15th Century. The town also boasts two Roman bridges. The 'Jesus Cristo' spans the River Benamar, whilst the 'Hellin' bridge crosses the River Alharabe. Also worth a visit is the 16th century 'Iglesia de Senora de Asuncion'.
