We went along to the first Mod Cruiserz cruise joining the modified, souped up, tuned and funky cars driving from San Luis to the Orihuela Costa via Lake Pedrera. It was a fun Saturday afternoon ride and it’s just great being in a convey of such wonderful cars. What a sight and sound it was! Our Top Ten shows some of the most iconic designs of all time. We’ve all heard the urban legend that Keith Moon (the drummer from The Who - for our younger readers) drove his Rolls into a swimming pool on his 21st birthday. Truth or myth? Other Who members feel it is a mix up of two car/water situations that happened to Keith: 1. His car rolled into a pool when he left the handbrake off, but the pool was being built and contained no water. 2. Keith drove his Continental into a pond (as you do) because the band refused to pay for it. We will never really know. Who can remember when Top Gear re-enacted the event a few years ago with Jeremy at the wheel? A great TV moment (see photo left). We had a surf around and discovered that you don’t need to be hellraising rocker to drive a car into a pool, here are our favourites.

Murray Walker O.B.E. and some of his well known utterings. by Jill Carter (Graeme) Murray Walker was born on the 10th October 1923 in Hall Green, Birmingham. His father was a works motorcyclist for Norton and competed in the Isle of Man T.T. Murray briefly raced motor cycles before carving a name as a commentator, making his debut at a Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb event in 1948. Murray is mostly remembered for his Formula One coverage from 1980 till 2000. During this period a successful double act emerged between himself and James Hunt, a former F1 World Champion, which endured until Hunt died from a sudden heart attack some ten years into their partnership. The enthusiasm of Murray was complimented by the encyclopaedic knowledge of Hunt. During this time many of the memorable utterings emerged which were so much a feature of his work. Officially retired from Formula One in 2000, a year has not passed when Murray has failed to be heard commentating on Murray Walker motor sport. A regular at Goodwood, Murray can be seen mingling with the crowds, posing for photographs and signing autographs in a most good natured way. Looking fitter than many men twenty years younger may this familiar voice and larger than life gentleman continue for years to come.

LĂ?NEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON DRIVING IN WINTER LĂnea Directa is one of the key players in the fight to reduce the number of accidents on our roads. For almost 20 years, it has promoted research into accident rates in order to encourage safe driving habits. Due to the risks involved with driving in winter months, it now offers advice on how to act in adverse weather conditions. With respect to the car: 1.Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and break fluid, antifreeze and oil levels. 2.Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm. 3.Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also ensure that your mobile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency. With respect to driving: 1.If you often drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice and always drive at low speeds. 2.If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding. 3.Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity. 4.When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning.

Bugatti Gangloff Concept. Are we looking at the new Bugatti Veyron? Maybe, maybe not. This is a design by Pawel Czyzeski that has been released, we think, to see what reaction it receives. The car is shown with it's inspirational piece, the 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante Coupé and as you can see, it looks like a modern day version of it, with a Veyron grill. Will it ever make it into production? I don't think so and do I care? No, not really.
When Animations Become A Reality. This is a Chevrolet Camaro that has been built to promote an animated movie called ‘Turbo’ about a snail who dreams of becoming a racing driver and winning the Indy 500. Creators Dreamworks (who made 'Shrek' and 'Kung Fu Panda') are looking to take on the Pixar movie 'Cars'. Let's hope they do a good job of making a great film and not subject us to the mass marketing of the 'Cars' movies. I can guarantee both my sons will receive something 'Cars' branded every birthday. So, back to the car itself. The ZL1 badges seem to indicate it has a 6.2l supercharged V8, which produces around 700bhp. Nice. So, watch out in cinemas this autumn, take the kids or the grandkids. Bet he's up against a hare, oh no, that was the tortoise.
The SkyCar, A Cool Flying Car. Moller International has been working on their 'vertical take off & landing’ (VTOL) SkyCar, designed for speeds of over 300 MPH at altitudes as high as 36,000 feet. It seats four people and isn't trying to replace commercial air travel. In the photo below, Dr. Paul Moller stands with BRITISH AUTO REPAIR CENTRE two prototypes of his SkyCar and SERVICING & MECHANICAL REPAIRS his company's flying saucer, the TYRES - ALIGNMENT - WHEEL BALANCE Neuera, which he helped develop and himself piloted in the 1970s. Those Bad Boyz have done it again, you may remember last year we featured their R1 Killer Clown? Well, here we have the latest bad bike in their collection, the all new “Army Issue” it started life as a Kawasaki GPZ Ninja 600. It was stripped back to frame and built up with everything Army. The attention to detail on this bike is absolutely incredible, even down to the tape used to protect the electrical wiring is camouflage in design. If you’re passing their shop in Cabo Roig it is essential you pop in there for a closer look.
Real AK 47 magazines are used and the Chain guard is made from genuine bullet shells. Shotgun shells and a handy hand gun sits on the perol tank, although the gun is a lighter since the police will not let them use a replica. spot the working flame thrower, army issue medical kit and real gas mask. everything is so deatailed even down to the wheel dust caps being hand grenades. The list is endless with too many items to mention but if bad boyz go to war they’ll have everything they need on 2 wheels. 12

Classless, reliable and dependable, the small car market changed forever when Volkswagen’s boxy Mk 1 Golf hit our streets in 1974. Now into its seventh generation, the Golf is nearly 40. With over 26 million sold since it launched, most of us have either owned one or know someone that has and still to date nothing else is like a Golf. 1976 was a vintage year for Volkswagen, it was the year the Golf GTi was born. As much as other makes have tried to follow in its tyre tracks the Golf is still considered the original hot hatch and a well deserved icon. The Mk 2 Golf arrived nine years after the original in 1983. The square edges were rounded off a bit, giving it a chunkier appearance. 1992 gave us the Mk3, not the most popular amongst Golf fans and the GTi model wasn’t the quickest. But to bring things back in line they gave us the stunning VR6, combined with a 2.8ltr V6 pumping a cool 173bhp, ok it may not sound that much compared to todays possibilities but hey come on, this was the early 90's and it was also a fingers up to BMW’s 325i. By 1997 Mk4 had really put on some weight and sent the Golf in a new direction. It was now about more quality and tasteful blue dashboard lighting. It still sold huge numbers, peaking at around 617,000 sales per year. The Mk 4 included diesel's for the first time in the form of the 115hp GT TDI, the GTi got a turbocharged 1.8ltr but it was still slightly underwhelming for hardcore V Dubbers. So the answer came in the form of the R32; 237bhp 3.2ltr V6 and four wheel drive made it a drivers delight. The MK5 broke the ranks by being a decent drive and when the 5’s GTi arrived in 2004, with retro tartan cloth and 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, it was clear Wolfsburg had scored again. Pictured is the Pirelli Edition of 2008, which was built to mark 25 years since the Mk 1 GTi of 1983. Complete an with uprated 230bhp engine and many detail changes over the standard GTi, the Mk 5 Pirelli makes a very sought after buy today. Mk6 hasn’t been around long and sadly it’s already being replaced. It went on sale in 2009 and still kept the Golf as one of the big sellers. The Mk 6 GTi picks up where the fifth generation left off, by being a right proper driving machine and a worthy GTi badge wearer. VW have given us a cabriolet version, the first time a GTi has gone topless since the Mk 1 Clipper. The new MK7 is built on a new platform or Modular Transverse Matrix which allows access to new engines, technologies and safety. It is even more refined, grown up, classier and you can be sure it will be worth every penny of your hard earned cash.

Season News Pre-Season Testing News. The first pre-season testing took place in Jerez and Lotus came out on top on two of the days. Jenson Button was fastest on day one. Nico Rosberg had an electrical fault on the first day, with Lewis Hamilton experiencing a loss of break pressure which caused him to crash into the tyre barriers on day two. Day three was better for Mercedes as Nico came second overall and completed 148 laps. Felipe Massa enjoyed the fastest lap so far on day three. The new Red Bull car performed well throughout the tests.

The second pre-season test in Barcelona saw Nico Rosberg set the pace on day one, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. Day two belonged to Sergio Perez who finished in front of World Champion Sebastian Vettel. Fernando Alonso came out on top on the third day, with Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg behind. A great end to the Barcelona test for Lewis Hamilton as he set an impressive pace (like his Top Gear lap!). He was 0.351 seconds faster than second-placed Jenson Button, his former McLaren team-mate. The final pre-season test is scheduled for 28 Feb to 3 Mar. 2013 Driver Line-Up. 2013 Rules Changes. There have been very few rule changes this season, one of them being that teams are allowed to use a "vanity panel" to disguise the ugly steps on the top of the noses that attracted so much criticism last year. The first race is set for the 17th March in Melbourne. Set your alarm clocks, it’s an early one!

F1 Driver Profile Emerson Fittipaldi
Emerson Fittipaldi is from Brazil, born in 1946. His father, Wilson was an early race promoter and both Emerson and his older brother Wilson Jr became interested in motorsport growing up. Starting with motorbikes and hydrofoils as teenagers, they progressed through karts and single seaters. When he was 21, Emerson won the Brazilian Formula Vee title and moved to Europe where he was spotted by Colin Chapman after winning a series of Formula Three races. He joined the Lotus F1 team in 1970 and by the 1972 season, he was driving the Lotus 72D, which many still consider the greatest Formula One car design ever. He won five of eleven races and beat Jackie Stewart to take the Title. Aged just 25 he was then the youngest champion in F1 history. He struggled the following year with the replacement Lotus and finished second. He changed teams for 1974 and joined McLaren where he went on to take his second championship that year. Second the following year to Niki Lauder, he then left McLaren to join his brother’s Fittipaldi Automotive team. After several years of not getting anywhere with the team, he left F1 and switched to IndyCars in 1984. He went on to win the Indianapolis 500 twice (once just ahead of Nigel Mansell) and the CART championship in 1989. He is still in the motorsport industry regularly appearing at races and is a chairman of motorsport.com.

British Touring Car Championship
The 2013 BTCC starts on 31st March at Brands Hatch, using a variety of modified road production 2.0L saloons. The BTCC is known for its close high-contact action, with the crowd loving the thrills and spills it inevitably brings. Last year’s winner, Gordon Shedden will return with Honda alongside three-time BTCC Champion Matt Neal. The 2010 Champion Jason Plato will be driving for MG again alongside newcomer Sam Tordoff. The 2009 BTCC champion Colin Turkington is returning after a 3 year absence for West Surrey Racing/ eBay alongside Rob Collard and Nick Foster.

The first Mod cruise took place on the 9th February and was great fun for all taking part. After a coffee in San Luis and a mooch over the cars, we all set off in convoy. A glorious sight of colourful cars with people cheering as we left and waving along the route. We stopped for a photo shoot at the Lake Pedrera before driving onto enjoy dinner in Orihuela Costa. A group of riders meet on Thursdays 10am (weather permitting) at the Sunset Cafe, Cabo Roig. Some of us are in 'clubs' and some are not. But Thursday rides are open to all riders. It's become a bit of a tradition that a write up of the run is sent out to the group via an email and it's been suggested that some of these be shared with you, the reader (suitably edited to protect reputations and the innocent!). We hope you enjoy them and if you don't join us for rides, maybe visit some of the destinations or try some of the routes. So, over to the groups scribe: "Some say he sleeps curled up around his bikes engine! And that his blood is Castrol GTX!!? All we know is, he's called 'El Guiri'!
Ride 1: Guns of Cabo Tinoso The weather forecast had given out a strong winds warning for today. But as we gathered at the Sunset Cafe the sky was clear and the wind wasn't too bad! 3 new riders today. It's always good to see new faces, but these lads were so old their faces wouldn't have been called 'new' 30 years ago! LOL! So they fitted in great with the rest of the old crocs! We put a safety lead on Colonel Blimp so he couldn't 'wander off' and then it was away down the autovia, coming off at the Los Urriatias exit. Then through Al Algar, and La Union before passing through Cartagena along the front and on over the mountain on the RM22. We stopped for a photo shoot on the way down and then made our way to the local 'cantina' in Campillo de Adentro. Dropping down into this valley always makes me think of Hobbits and Wizards!? Oh, just me then?!
Lucky and Rob went to great lengths to remind everyone NOT to take the gravel road halfway up to the 'guns' and to stay on the tarmac! Rob then led us up the mountain and right onto the gravel track!! Doh! Only a few feet though! LOL! A quick turn around and we were off up the last few miles to the guns. The headland here is approx. 1000 feet high, and the guns were capable of hurling shells upto 35 Kilometres!! We pondered what it must have been like for the poor souls who were subjected to such bombardments! There are all kinds of 'rumors' about the guns (used in films, fired in anger or not etc), But I'll leave that for others, just type Cabo Tinoso guns into Google. It was at this juncture that Mr Moto Guzzi announced he needed fuel! So, into Mazarron for the nearest fuel before heading back towards Cartagena on the N332. It was here that our luck ran out and the threatened winds made an appearance. The group pressed on to La Algar and a final stop before heading home. Great ride everyone thanks very much. MOTORBIKE NEWS This summer's Isle of Man TT Races will offer up a first for motorcycle fans, following the announcement by WK Bikes that the first Chinese-made motorbike WK Bike will take part. The company is set to enter a 650-twin manufactured vehicle from Chinese firm CF Moto in the Lightweight TT Race on June 8th. A motorbike designed by Manchester United's Wayne Rooney sold for £43,250 (€49k) when it was auctioned for the KidsAid foundation charity last month. The 2012 Lauge Jensen cruiser-style machine was customised by Rooney with a special shift rod bearing 21 black diamonds and a single white diamond. An autographed No 10 football shirt had been lacquer-sealed on to the petrol tank as well.
