25 Years of the MX-5. Maxda's baby sports car, the MX-5 Mazda celebrates its 25th anniversary this month and has launched a special website to commemorate the occasion, looking at the history and future of the most popular roadster of all time, including messages from the engineers behind its development back in the 80's. Mazda stuck to the formula that made them so popular; nimble, lightweight, open-air motoring fun. Now in its third generation, the MX-5 continues to be a success including holding a Guinness World Record for being the bestselling two-seater sports car, currently at 920,000. Fiat launches 500L 'Beats Edition'. Fiat have introduced a special 'Beats Edition' featuring the latest Beats by Dr. Dre audio technology. The new 500L Beats Edition combines cutting-edge technology with a 'cool, urban look' according to Fiat in a two-tone, grey/black colour scheme finished in a choice of gloss and matte finishes. Further styling enhancements include 17-inch alloy wheels, wheel arch extensions, side skirts and bumper inserts, all finished in black. Red brake callipers and red inserts in the mirror fairings complete the distinctive "Beats" look. As for the stereo... the BeatsAudio system has a total output of 520W via an eight-channel DSP-equipped amplifier. With seven speakers, the sound is designed to recreate the sound spectrum that artists experience during studio recordings. Look out for it later this month.

Spanish Motor Race Circuits For A Day Out with a Difference by Jill Carter Following on from last month´s article on race circuits that may merit being included on a short break this article is concentrating on circuits that can be part of a day trip. The nearest is Cartagena about an hour from Torrevieja, then Jumilla an hour and a half plus I have included Albacete which is a longer run of approximately 2 hours from Torrevieja. These circuits are not as well appointed as those of last month, rather they on a par with a traditional UK Club/National circuit and do not hold F1 events. The reader should consult their individual web pages to see if they are interested in the activities on offer. However, Jumilla has hotel facilities, see below, and these can be viewed through their web site links. All of the circuits offer track days with or without instruction. This is a good way to hone your driving skills on the road as you learn the handling limits of your car as well as anticipating potential loss of control situations.

Season News Pre-Season Testing News. Jerez: On their first outing the new engines from Mercedes were most successful, with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosburg performing very well. Likewise for the teams powered by Mercedes engines: McLaren, Williams and Force India. The Ferrari engine also ran reliably for their three teams: Ferrari, Sauber, & Marussia. Red Bull and engine supplier Renault hit major problems with both the power-unit and the car. Renault are suffering a number of problems with their power-unit, which affected all three of their teams who were running in Jerez: Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Caterham.

Bahrain: Nico Roseburg and Lewis Hamilton again set the fastest times in the second pre-season test, confirming what we saw at Jerez: Mercedes are ahead in the new engine game at the moment. Red Bull were again hit by reliability problems, both with the car and the Renault power-unit. In a hearing in London on Feb 20th, Mr Justice Newey rejected an £85m damages case against the F1 chief executive. But he found the 83 year old F1 stalwart had done a "corrupt" deal over F1 share sales. Will this end his 40 year reign over F1? After the ruling, Bernie Ecclestone said he was "relieved" that the judge had rejected the damages claim, but the judge said the F1 supremo had been not "reliable or truthful". In January, Ecclestone stepped down from the board of the company which runs Formula 1 after it was announced he would have to stand trial on bribery charges in Germany, in a separate criminal case. This trial is set for April in Munich and he will face allegations that he bribed a German banker who is serving a jail sentence for receiving the payment. He admits the payment but denies bribery. He continues to run F1 on a day-to-day basis, but can no longer approve or sign significant contracts.

F1 Driver Profile Giuseppe Farina
Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina was born in Turin, Italy in 1906 and was the nephew of coach builder Pinin Farina. His racing career really started in the 1930s, when he won many races in the Voiturette class and winning the Italian Drivers' Championship three years in a row racing Alfa Romeos. After World War II, Farina drove for Enzo Ferrari, then joined Alfa Romeo in time for the inaugural world championship in 1950. He took three wins out of the seven races (including the Indianapolis 500) and the title of first ever Formula One World Champion. His team-mate Juan Manuel Fangio won the title the year after and Farina moved to Ferrari with Alberto Ascari. It was Ascari who went onto win the next two titles while Farina’s season was cut short after he was injured in a crash at Monza. At 48, Farina began the 1955 season still suffering from his injuries, but retired from F1 at the end of the season. He died in a car accident in 1966 on his way to the French Grand Prix in which he was to film scenes for John Frankenheimer’s film Grand Prix.

3 More Headlights The Austin A90 Atlantic Thank you to reader Syd Kingston, who sent us information about another car with three headlights, following our article in issue 74 Jan 2014. We wanted to share it with you. This is the Austin A90 Atlantic, made between 1949 and 1952 and designed to tap into the lucrative US market after World War II. February Ace Café
W
e have never had more than 100 Classic Cars attending our event but today we well and truly broke the record with 122 cars attending, thanks in part to friends from the Porsche Club and the Orihuela 600 Club from Orihuela. A trio of Ferraris in the obligatory bright red and plenty of other “new faces” making their first visit meant that our display not only filled the service road but also stretched around the corner Phoenix Car Club towards the Industrial Estate. The Phoenix Ace Café meet takes place on the first Sunday of each month at 11:00 at Hotel La Torre, Los Montesinos and is open to members and all car enthusiasts. www.phoenixcarclub.com

Ride 11: Garapacha Once again the day dawned bright with glorious sunshine and the promise of another great day's riding. Much to Andy's horror (and Rob's amusement!), 22 bikes turned out to join Andy in his first attempt at leading a Run! 'Tricks' the Liverpudlian magician was there, as was 'Thumbs', Lucky, Doc, The 'Dynamic Dyke-Hunting Duo' and Jellybean (who had finally ran out of excuses not to ride! Lol!). Also making a cameo appearance was the Chairman. There is NO acceptable excuse for coming to a BIKE meet in the CAR?! Henryk! He he he, ahhhhhhhhhhh, So funny sometimes. Not now, but sometimes... After a brief 'Brief' from HandyAndy, we set off for our first stop at Los Perriquitos Spa. Apart from a quick stop to collect the bits that had fallen off the 'Rolling Lemon' (well, he said it was the bike fallin to bits and not him? You never know with jellybean!); the ride passed pleasantly and was without incident. After patatas a la Los Perriquitos, we headed off again on the second leg of Andy's Run into Garapacha. The roads to the village could best be described as 'rugged'. But, once you knock the speed back a bit, they're far from being challenging for a rider of average ability. This slower pace also lets you enjoy the beautiful scenery and makes a welcome change from the 'position, speed, gear, apex and back on the throttle' of faster roads. The bar in the village was closed unfortunately. So, after photos the group pressed on to Pinoso and the lure of caffeine. At the regular bar, Jesus showed us his Big Horn, ooerr missus!! Following that, Andy led us on a tour of small towns and conurbations to "Get a feel of the REAL Spain!" A final stop in Jacarilla saw the group altogether (again!!). A great day, some brilliant scenery and good company. Would Andy do it again? YES! But Rob hasn't told him yet! Lol!! Thanks very much HandyAndy.
