The Shanghai Motor Show is big business and last year the new car market increased by 71% in China. To put it in perspective, Volvo Cars, the first wholly Chineseowned Western car maker, would have to open a new dealership every fortnight and those dealers will need to recruit 100 new members of staff every month for the next four years. Leila Lombardi - an Inspiration by Jill Carter Her best qualifying position was seventeenth in Belgium. She finished the season in twenty-first position for the Championship.
One of only five women in history to qualify for a World Championship Formula One Grand Prix, Leila Lombardi is also the only woman to date to have won points in a F1 Grand Prix, this was achieved in the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix at Montjuich Park where she finished sixth in an accident-curtailed race with half points awarded.
The 1976 season did not go well with one drive for Williams where she failed to qualify and an unsuccessful time at RAM. Her last Formula One race was in Austria in 1976. Lombardi´s entry of seventeen Formula One races still stands as the most for a woman driver. Also her half point season total is the only recorded for any woman driver.
Lombardi was born in Frugarlo, Italy in 1941. Surprisingly her parents did not own a car and it has been reported that Lombardi first gained the taste for speed following a rapid trip to hospital after a sporting accident. Lombardi drove four times at Le Mans in The fastest vehicle in the family was a 1975, 76, 77 and 1980 with the highest finish ten-speed bicycle! MOTORS IN THE NEWS The Largest Parade of MGs. 146 cars drove around Corby's Rockingham’s oval circuit last month and set a new Guinness World Record for the largest parade of MGs ever. Officially, the world record will be 144 cars, since two MGs were discounted from the attempt as they were over the maximum distance of two car lengths between vehicles. Since there was no existing record for the largest parade of MGs, they only needed 101 cars to set the world record. The event was organised by Lancaster Insurance and the MG Owners’ Club, to commemorate 30 years of the insurance company.
Ford Transit Reaches it’s Half Century. Ford UK have sent out a touring party of four current Ford Transit models to visit dealerships, events and shows over the coming months in celebration of the Transit’s 50th birthday. A Transit Courier, Transit Connect, Transit Custom, and a two-tonne Transit will be touring the UK. Almost 8 million commercial vehicles bearing the Transit name have been produced since the first one rolled off the Langley production line in August 1965. If they were lined up end-to-end they would circle the globe. Ford claim that over the past five decades a Transit has been sold, on average, every three minutes. It passed the one million milestone in 1976 and will pass 9 million this year. Hennessey Tuned Cadillac CTS-V. The standard 2016 CTS-V pushes out 640hp, but that's not enough for tuning company Hennessey, oh no, they have produced a 1000hp version. They have done this with forged aluminum pistons, forged steel connecting rods and crankshaft, twin ball-bearing turbos in place of the factory supercharger, a custom camshaft, upgraded fuel injectors, an air-to-air intercooler, a stainless-steel exhaust system, and much more. The company reckon the top speed will be around 240 mph. Audi Turn CO 2 Into Diesel. Audi claim that they can make diesel using only water and carbon dioxide. With increased CO2 emissions and pollution a global problem and ever-diminishing fossil fuel reserves, it is an ideal solution. It has been tested by Germany’s own Federal Minister of Education and Research (get ready..) Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka in her car, an Audi A8 TDI. We wait to see if this e-diesel becomes commercially available. Here’s the science bit for all you chemists and biochemists out there.

A lighthearted romp through the ups and downs of 40 years of car ownership. My first car was a 1965 Mini, red it was, with sliding windows, magic wand gear stick and a foot operated wash/wipe system. It was seven years old when I bought it and in good nick as it was previously owned by a mechanic. I needed transport to get me to and from my first job and when I mentioned the word “bike” my dear old dad put his foot down and said “over my dead body, or more likely yours” as he knew my need for speed and so he organised the finance for the Mini. He was right, by the way, about the bike. I wouldn’t have lasted kissing time because my daily commute involved a 40 mile round trip at all hours and in all weathers. Things were hairy enough in the Mini! I didn’t have it long when the non-stick crossply tyres were swopped for a set of Goodyear G800s and soon after came a Mountney steering wheel and a pair of Cibie Oscars. It was the business and I felt like Paddy Hopkirk. That little car never missed a beat and took me all over the country and got it’s first taste of rallying when it marshalled on the 1973 Circuit of Ireland.
In 1974 the Mini gave way to a yellowish orange Escort 1100 and the modification process started all over again. A trip to the breakers beckoned and in those days the most sought after Fords were Escort vans and 2000E Corsairs for their disc brake front struts, 4.4 diffs and close ratio gearboxes. My local scrapyard coughed up all these bits plus a 1300GT engine and a set of wide steel wheels and lo and behold I had a rally car. The engine wouldn’t pull the skin off a banana which was just as well because my rally car was also my road car and so my chances of having an accident were diminished. The Thomond Rally in November ’74 was my first venture onto the stages and I got to the finish with one bent wing and was able to drive to work the following day. Result! A few more rallies followed and the car survived despite my best efforts to dump it. At this time I had been co-driving for my good friend Donal Griffin in his Mk1 Escort Mexico and his driving skills made me realise that my future might be better served as a budding John Davenport rather than a Billy Coleman and so, when Donal decided to sell the Mexico and move up to a Twin Cam the temptation was too great and I sold the Jaffa and purchased the Mex. I concentrated on night navigation rallies with the occasional foray onto the stages and struck up a partnership with the legendary Dick O’Brien with whom I had some fairly decent results. All this time the Mexico was still my everyday transport and such was it’s reliability that it never let me down on rally or road, notwithstanding the odd engine rebuild or visit to the body shop. On one occasion a “navigational inexactitude” led to a trousers filling trip over a cliff and onto a strand but even this, after the car had been craned back onto dry land, did not prevent us from driving home. What a car!

My time with the Mexico eventually came to an end and as a stopgap until I found something interesting I bought a Fiat 127. This was a real Wednesday car and had a wonderful free revving engine and went like the clappers. The only thing it was missing was image and so it had to go. Around this time I had started to write a motoring column for my local newspaper and in this capacity Fords invited me to the launch of it’s new Fiesta. I was really taken by this little car and soon after a deal was struck and I became the proud owner of my first ever brand new motor. The Fiesta, with the eyecatching plate PI 11, served me well until a Fiesta 1300S came on the market and once again the need for speed took over and the S found it’s way to my driveway. A set of alloys, Bilstein suspension and a few other bits and pieces were added and before I knew it I was back on the night nav trail with D O’B by my side. Our only outright win came in this car on the 1000 Shakes Rally and it survived two long seasons without a scratch or a mechanical hitch. By now I had reached the stage where I had to make a decision as to whether I would continue rallying and buy an everyday car as well or concentrate on the co-driving. A quick look at the bank balance sorted that out and so the Fiesta was stripped of all the quick bits and was traded in as a standard car against a new Escort XR3. Up to now my Fords had served me well but boy did I come down to earth with a bang! The XR3, for all it’s good looks, was a nightmare. Ford, at this time, were going through one of the worst patches in their history and the XR3 epitomised all that was bad about the company’s cars. It would take an article on it’s own to list the faults with this car and eventually the dealer bought the car back from me. Enough said! At the time I was friendly with the Marketing Manager of Ford of Ireland and he did all he could to help but silk purse and sows ear come to mind and to add insult to injury I then bought a Toyota, Ford’s big rival, and that nearly put paid to our friendship. The Toyota came about because I did the Circuit of Ireland that year (1981) with Toyota Ireland and so I got a good deal in a red 1.3 five speed Starlet. Nice car which went and handled well and was the last rear wheel drive car I had for a long long time. Seven of my first eight cars were red, either by accident or design, and I saw this as an omen that one day I would own a red Italian car... TBC next month.

2015 29th March Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Lewis Hamilton was on pole with Sebastian Vettel in second ahead of Nico Rosberg. Lewis held the lead and Sebastian kept Nico behind him until lap 4 when Marcus Ericsson spun out bringing out the safety car. The Mercedes drivers pitted to put on the harder prime tyre in an effort to get the jump early on. Sebastian didn't pit, staying with his options and led the race as Lewis and Nico came out in in fifith and eighth place respectively. Lewis made his way into second by lap 10, but Sebastian had built up a 10 second lead. By lap 14 Nico was in third and Sebastian pitted on lap 18 for another set of options. He rejoined the race in third and within 6 laps had retaken the lead. Lewis pitted again but had to settle for another set of the harder tyres since his options were worn out from qualifying and the scorching heat. Sebastian went out to take the win for Ferrari, their first F1 victory since the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix.
12th April Shanghai, China Lewis Hamilton took pole again and held the lead off the line with Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel behind. This time around, all three cars operated a two-stop strategy, the Mercedes drivers having had their fingers burnt last time around. Lewis's lead was reduced in the middle of the race as he controlled his speed. Nico became frustrated and radioed Mercedes asking if Lewis could speed up, since his tyres were wearing too much as he got within two seconds from his team-mate and it was putting him under pressure from the Ferrari driver. A later final pit stop by Lewis allowed him to increase his lead and take the victory, despite a late safety car stint bunching the pack up. Nico finished second, Sebastian third and Kimi Raikkonen took fourth.
Formula E is the new FIA single-seater championship and the world's first fully-electric racing series. 4th April 2015: Long Beach, USA Nelson Piquet Jr. took his first Formula E win in the same place his father scored his maiden Formula 1 victory. Just a short distance from Hollywood the race was watched by 23,000 spectators including film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Adrien Brody. Starting in second place behind Daniel Abt, Piquet Jr. took the lead braking for the first corner and kept the lead throughout, eeking out a small but constant gap from the cars behind. Jean-Eric Vergne took second with Lucas Di Grassi third. For the sixth time in as many races, there was a different winner: Piquet Jr Nelson Piquet Jr. (USA), Di Grassi (Beijing) Bird (Putrajaya) Buemi (Punta del Este) Da Costa (Buenos Aires) and Prost (Miami) which confirms how closely matched is the first ever electric championship. The next race is in Monaco on 9th May a track featuring sections of the one used for the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Watch it live on ITV4.

19th April Sakhir, Bahrain Lewis Hamilton enjoyed another lights-to-flag victory after a making a solid start from pole. Sebastian Vettel kept his second place as the race got started, but Nico Rosberg was jumped by Kimi Raikkonen. As Lewis created a gap, Nico worked his way up overtaking both Ferraris in indentical moves on lap four and lap eight and moved into second place behind his team-mate during the first stint. The pit stops saw the 3 drivers behind Lewis battling, Sebastian ran wide at one point and had to pit to repair the damage to the front wing. The Mercedes had brake issues on the last couple of laps, causing Nico to run wide and allow Kimi through to take second, with Nico third, ahead of Williams's Valtteri Bottas and Sebastian Vettel.

The Motorsport Month by Richard O'Rourke What an interesting month it has been and all because Italy has woken from it’s deep slumber and decided to compete again. Ferrari and Ducati are back. The Prancing Horse continued the form shown in Australia and shocked the F1 world, and Mercedes in particular, by winning in Malaysia. Vettel’s car was kinder to it’s tyres than the Mercs and was able to run longer and faster and, but for bad luck, Kimi Raikkonen could well have made it a Ferrari 1-2. Game on then for the season or what? In China the colder weather suited the Mercedes team and again it was tyre degradation which dictated the result with Hamilton and Rosberg ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen. Race strategy also played a part and Toto Wolff/Paddy Lowe/ Niki Lauda were not about to be fooled again by the clever boys from Maranello. Speaking of which, new boss man Maurizio Arrivabene seems to have cast a spell over Ferrari. All happiness and hugs and even Kimi is smiling and driving fast. The heat of Bahrain was expected to favour Ferrari and many people expected a repeat of the Malaysia result. Well, nearly but not quite! Hamilton put the hammer down and drove into the distance and, despite Raikkonen being on the right tyres in the end, he was just a little bit too far back to trouble the No 1 Merc. Oops, sorry! Lewis is not No1 (but he is really). One more lap and Kimi would have been on his tail and with the Merc in braking trouble who knows what the outcome would have been. Rosbergs car had already run out of brakes but still managed to grab third. Poor old Williams (Happy 70th Frank!) had been in a comfortable second last year but have been relegated to third behind Ferrari this year and there seems to be nothing they can do about it. Bottas’ fourth place in Bahrain has been their best result to date and Claire Williams seems resigned to the fact that the Ferraris are quicker and that’s that. Can Mercedes help what is essentially
their No2 team and speed them up so that they trouble the Italians and thereby take the heat off themselves. I’m waiting for an improvement from McLaren/Honda. I’m a patient man but progress is so slow that it is imperceptible. Surely the combined might of McLaren and Honda can work faster than that. Oh, by the way, last month I asked did Alonso jump ship at the wrong time? I think we have the answer now. Next question. Where will he be next year? Meanwhile on two wheels the Moto GP season has got off to a cracking start. Two wins for Rossi, (Qatar and Argentina) Ducati with three second places and a third and Yamaha giving Honda a right spanking. Last year you couldn’t keep the Spanish riders off the Podium. This year Marquez has been the only visitor in three races with a win in the USA. Yes, the surprise of the season has been the resurgence of Ducati. Dovizioso in particular has been riding very well and has three second places in the can. The bike is fast and well balanced and it seems like a matter of time before they notch up a win. Maybe Jerez on May 3rd! Rossi has been brilliant as only Rossi can be and his win in Argentina will remain in the memory for a long time. Relentless pursuit of Marquez, who was on worn rubber due to a wrong tyre choice, resulted in an overtake and a coming together which saw Rossi in the lead and Marquez on the ground. Cal Crutchlow passed Iannone in the last corner to grab third place for Honda while the once dominant Jorge Lorenzo has had to manage with two fourths and a fifth place so far. The next rounds of the F1 and Moto GP championships are here in Spain, Jerez for the bikes on May 3rd and Barcelona for the cars on May 10th. If Ferrari and Ducati can keep up the pressure we are in for a fascination year on four wheels and two. Forza Italia!

Largest Collection of Classic Jaguars Ever in Spain After months of planning The Big One as it became to be called actually happened. A joint meeting between The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain and The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, France, plus a few guys from the Madrid Jaguar Club. The result was 73 fabulous Jaguars and 151 very enthusiastic Jaguar owners met in Northern Spain on the last weekend of March. Cars and owners came from all over Spain and France and congregated at the Parador Siguenza hotel in Siguenza. A 13th Century castle that has been converted into a luxury hotel. An outstanding collection of Big Cats graced the cobbled grounds of this iconic building. It made “an old man” very happy, what an amazing sight. I am not going to try and mention all the cars, there were so many that deserved a special mention. On the Saturday evening we all gathered for the “Black, White & Bling” Gala Dinner, held in the medieval hall. The Grand Draw took place with some fantastic prizes,including bottles of 40 and 20 year old Cognac, a gold plated Jaguar fob watch and many more. At the end of the evening we held a Grand Auction. Many, many thanks to those

members who donated items and we made just slightly over 1,800€, of which 600€ will be kept for club funds and the remaining 1,200€ will be donated to Cancer Research UK. Sunday started early when all our Jaguars snaked through the little town of Siguenza and then squeezed in to the town square. I am not quite sure how we got them all in but we did. I have never seen a site quite like it, a phenomenal photo opportunity. We had a meeting with the Mayor then the Big Cats cruised out of the town and into the Spanish countryside on their way to another Parador hotel in Soria, where a very special “posh tapas” lunch had been organised. That brought the organised parts of the event to a close. A very special thank you to all those that attended and helped making this event happen. The majority of the 'Rides' are an all day affair, taking in fantastic roads and spectacular views/vistas etc. You never know, you might even get your photo in the magazine if you smile nicely! Lol!! We also like to encourage others to come forward with

I've got a map but bring your GPS just in case! Lol! ahhh, Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick excellent! Lol! a new route special for 2015, great roads/scenery folks. September 6th LETUR 'LOOP', glorious roads that cut through beautiful scenery, if you haven't rode in this area it's a great introduction ride! 20th SAN FRANCISCO..."if you're going to San..." More great roads, this time Coastal as well as mountain. October 4th To HELLin AND BACK! Another new Run for 2015, come along and bring your AC/DC track.."Highway to Hellin.." Lol!!
