Editors Notes:

There’s a lot going on this month and you can find all the details inside. There’s the FirAuto Car Show and Motorbike Show at the IFA Centre in Alicante on 12-14 May, Car Broker Spain’s 2nd Anniversary Party on May 6th in Benijofar and the Orihuela Custom & Classic Motorbike Party on May 13th in San Miguel. Car Broker Spain enjoyed the Hyundai’s hospitality at the WRC Rally France and I think you’ll be surprised at the time and effort involved, read all about it on page 14. Our own rallyman Richard O’Rourke recounts an amusing story from his days as a motorsport photographer and reporter, this time involving Irish whiskey! Richard also sums up the motorsport from the last month on page 16. Jill Carter gives advice on the frequently-asked question about whether to buy a petrol or diesel car in today’s world. Keith Nicol writes about his son, Brandon and his first car (at 16), which he brought to the Ace Cafe a couple of months ago and got everyone asking “What is it?” You can find out on page 23. El Guiri muses about the world’s best roads and we include some photos to get you planning your next riding (or driving hee hee don’t tell him that though!) holiday. Happy motoring! Professor

This is the new Nissan Micra but it's not so micro anymore, this one is longer, wider and lower. The Micra has been repositioned in the competitive European B-hatchback segment being designed and engineered with those customers in mind. Although it is a daring new direction, Nissan believes the all-new Micra meets and exceeds its targets. The exterior contemporary look and premium feel continues inside with a high quality cabin that has two-tone soft-touch materials as standard across the range. The five-door-only body shell boasts best in class ergonomics for front seat occupants, with no compromise to rear passenger space. It is also a technology leader, with a number of 'in-control' features, the sort usually associated with more expensive models and now available for the first time in this segment. These include; the Intelligent Around View Monitor camera system, as seen on the Qashqai and Juke crossovers; Intelligent Lane Intervention, a safety system which gently corrects the Micra back onto the right path should it be required. For music fans, a highlight of the new Micra will be the BOSE personal audio system with advanced speakers built into the driver's head rest. There will be 10 body colours available and downsized engines at launch, two petrol and one diesel. Each being engineered and tuned to match the character of the vehicle. Prices from 13.500€.

MOTORS IN THE NEWS

Original Mini Returns. David Brown Au t o m o t i ve (DBA) has resurrected the classic Mini and reimagined it as a modern 21st Century city car. Production of the original car stopped in 2001 after 41 years. Mini still produce cars, but they are bigger and don’t have the same retro charm and appeal. DBA has taken the classic sixties body and shell of the Mini for the Mini Remastered but has introduced modern tech into the car to make it more than just a fashion accessory. The price isn't mini though, it'll cost you between £70,000 and £100,000 to own one of these cars and they are only making 100.

Yellow Car Owners Out In Force. Last month, a convoy of 100 yellow cars drove through a picturesque Cotswold village, Bibury in an act of solidarity towards yellow Vauxhall Corsa owner Peter Maddox. Mr Maddox has come under fire for parking his car outside his cottage in Arlington Row. Tourists have complained that it "ruins" the view and, earlier this year, the vehicle was vandalised. Bibury, near Cirencester, was once described by William Morris as "the most beautiful village in England". The National Trust owns the 17th Century cottages of Arlington Row, which have been featured on the inside cover of the British passport and are some of the most photographed dwellings in the country. Complaints about Mr Maddox's car began in 2015 after someone posted a picture of the car with the comment: "Picture postcard street photobombed by ugly little yellow car." Mr Maddox said he was "overwhelmed" by the THE ONLY LEGAL REGISTERED UK BREAKERS YARD IN THE WHOLE OF SPAIN show of support for his car. Coys of London are having their spring “Modern Classics” auction and over the next two months we will feature a nice selection including their suggested guide price.

RENAULT 5 ALPINE TURBO: £9,000 - £12,000 This French import is a good option. It has spent most of its life in the south west of France and north west of Spain, which means rust shouldn’t be an issue.

DINO 308 GT4: £38,000 - £43,000 This 1980 Dino is one of the last of the 2,826 units built. It may have been criticised for its conservative styling, but it’s aging as well as any other Ferrari from the 1970s.

Diesel Versus Petrol When Buying A New Car Jill Carter A decade or so ago it was quite simple, diesel cars were cheaper to run but slower and noisier than their petrol equivalent. People chose according to their financial and driving needs. So how does one make a choice today, with increasingly more cities banning, restricting, or charging extra for driving diesel cars as well as countries such as Norway considering a total ban of all petroleum propulsed cars. During the last decade diesel cars have become much smoother with increased performance. Petrol cars have decreased their fuel consumption making it cheaper to fill the tank despite the rise in fuel costs. Therefore the difference in drivers enjoyment and the running costs have reduced. The first and possibly the most important consideration is total annual mileage. Tests by WHICH? showed that you need to do more than 11,000 miles per year to make a diesel car cost effective in the UK where diesel prices are usually more than those of petrol. Whereas servicing is cheaper for the diesel versions as well as the majority of insurance policies favour the diesel. The resale value of diesel cars tends to be higher than their petrol equivalents.

Remember that the improvements in diesel cars together with improved petrol mileage figures mainly apply to cars manufactued in the past five years. A second-hand diesel car will still be noisy and slow and the petrol car will be more thirsty than a new vehicle. It is necessary to look closely at vehicle performance data posted on the internet or in motoring magazines as well as manufacturers own data before making a choice. Tests conducted by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) show that modern diesel cars emit on average seven times the EU limit for Nox, therefore do we need to worry about the possible future banning of diesel and even petrol cars? In the short term it is more likely that the diesel cars with high emissions will be targeted. As pollution problems continue or increase, more will be done to counteract this and since one high-profile cause is the diesel engined vehicle, it is most likey that more countries will look to banning or restricting its use in highly populated urban areas. The BBC reported that individual countries are beginning to act. The UK is one of six European countries potentially facing hefty fines if it doesn't get NO2 levels down by 2020. To this end, the government launched a consultation document in September 2015 suggesting that diesel drivers in London, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby and Southampton could be limited from driving into the city centre.

The above are guidelines on what to consider but before making that final decision cosider your driving profile. If the car will be making high speed motorway journeys or towing a trailer or caravan then the increased torque of a diesel car may suit your needs. The lively drive of a sporty saloon will be better served by a petrol engine. How often do you see a At the moment the choice of diesel or petrol will remain one diesel Ferrari? of personal preference once all considerations have been taken into account. "Look what I saw at my local car wash!" said Richard O’Rourke.

A Ferrari FF. Nice car.

WRC Rally France - Corsica The 6th to the 9th of April saw the 4th stages of the World Rally Championships take place on the beautiful French Island of Corsica covering just under 317kms . Commonly known as the "rally of 10,000 curves", many of the rough, narrow, asphalt roads are bordered on one side by a rock face and on the other, a steep drop into the sea meaning tyre choice is imperative. The team from Car Broker Spain in Benijofar went there to meet up with Hyundais' driver, Hayden Paddon and to see exactly how a Motorsport team copes with the logistics of such an immense event. The service park is the designated area where teams make their home for each WRC event. From this temporary base, teams can carry out maintenance on their cars at specific times, conduct media conferences and offer guest hospitality. Andy, together with Yasmina and Mandy were fortunate enough to be given VIP passes into Hyundai "Hospitality" by Hayden Paddon, giving them the opportunity to see the cars up-close, talk with the drivers and see the cars being worked on during stages. The building which takes 6 days to install ( and only 3 to dismantle ), has a ground floor, which can accomodate up to 4 rally cars, and a first floor which holds the restaurant and rest area. 1,000 square metres and 45 metres long, it is transported to each event on 11 articulated trailers. And the catering is not left to chance either. A team of 40 chefs and waiting staff are also transported to each venue to care for the more than 200 VIP guests and the drivers and their crews.

Hospitality at Hyundai - outside Mandy and Yasmina with Hayden Paddon

and inside

The service area looked frantic but there is a very methodical and well organized approach to ensure each section of the car is inspected correctly. One chief mechanic and four other mechanics attend each corner of the car when it enters service and a maximum of 8 people are allowed to work on each car. These are identified with fluorescent ankle or armbands and FIA scrutineers are appointed to ensure no-one else touches the cars. There are other crew assigned to take care of the drivers and co-drivers kit - helmets, Head and Neck Support device ( HANS ) and camel bags ( drinking system ). The engineer and other technicians are on hand for the drivers to discuss any issues that may need attention, how the car needs to be set up or tyre changes needed. At the end of day 4 Hayden told Andy he was off back to New Zealand for 2 weeks before heading off to Argentina to start the run-up to round 5 of the WRC on the 27th April. Hayden Paddon in action

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2017 Formula One China. It’s one all in the Vettel/Hamilton match and one all in the Ferrari/Merc match with 18 to go. On a damp but drying track Lewis drove a perfect race and deserved his win but Vettel was unlucky having stopped for dry weather tyres under an early VSC only for Giovinazzi (Sauber) to crash on the main straight causing a full safety car only two laps later. All the others poured in for a free tyre stop and Seb saw his chance of a win slip away. Meanwhile at the other end of the field Verstappen started from 17th on the grid and made up 9 places on the first lap and by lap 7 (after the safety car) he was second. The boy is magic. After that things settled down a bit and Vettel passed both Red Bulls to take second. Bottas blotted his copybook by spinning under the safety car while weaving about in an effort to keep his tyres warm and things are going from bad to worse for McLaren and Alonso who retired once again but this time it was not the fault of the slow Honda engine. Bahrain. Big news in Bahrain was that Fernando Alonso will skip the Monaco GP and instead will drive a McLaren entered car in the Indianapolis 500. He will become the sixth F1 champion to drive in Indy and speculation is that his ambition is to emulate Graham Hill by winning the F1 Championship, Indy and Le Mans. In the modern era when drivers tend to stick to one discipline it would be an awesome feat indeed. On the track things went from bad to worse for McLaren when Stoffel Vandoorne didn’t even start and Alonso cried enough with one lap to go. Meanwhile at the sharp end, Bottas led from pole

but Vettel got the jump on Hamilton and stuck with the Finn, passing him at the first pit stop. Hamilton ruined any chance he might have had when he held up Ricciardo on the way into the pits and incurred a penalty. He later passed Bottas for second place but had no answer to the flying Ferrari. Vettel leads the championship and even at this early stage it looks like Ferrari and Mercedes are going to have to put all their eggs in one basket and back Seb and Lewis for the title leaving Raikkonen and Bottas to play supporting roles. Verstappen denied us one of his thrilling drives when his Red Bull ran out of brakes on lap 12 while in fourth place. WRC In Rally France, or the Tour de Corse in old money, Thierry Neuville took a well deserved win in his Hyundai ahead of Ogier’s Ford. The French World Champion is not entirely happy with the Fiesta and one can almost see him wishing he was back in the fast and reliable Golf. Still, he leads the series through consistency and so long as the others trip over themselves he is likely to be in the shake-up at seasons end. Kris Meeke retired while in the lead with engine failure on Saturday and Elfyn Evans also retired his Ford. Neuville had a healthy lead going into the last stage and won comfortably but it was all change behind him with Ogier overtaking Sordo and Latvala pipping Breen for fourth on the final test. It appears as if Citroen and Hyundai have the quickest cars this year and there is a fascinating season ahead as they all battle for championship points. Seb

MotoGP Argentina was the venue for the latest round of the Moto GP championship and once again it was Maverick Viñales who came out on top. Marc Marquez crashed out while in the lead followed by his team mate Pedrosa and the two Ducatis of Dovizioso and Lorenzo also fell over. Viñales then led on his Yamaha with the ever present Rossi taking the runner-up spot with Cal Cruchlow finishing third. Lorenzo is struggling badly with the Ducati and may regret his move away from Yamaha while the opposite is true of Viñales who is relishing in his move from Suzuki to Yamaha. A long way to go in Moto GP as with F1 and WRC and as usual at this time of year there is a lot of speculation and some sorting out to be done. Austin, Texas was the venue for the USA Moto GP and the question was, would Marquez make it five in a row in the US or would Viñales continue his blistering start to the season and make it three wins in a row. The answer, as a politician might say, is yes and no. Yes Marquez rode a brilliant tactical race and won comfortably and no, Viñales didn’t win. He crashed on lap 2. Pedrosa fought long and hard with Marquez but eventually had to give in and then fell into the clutches of Rossi who passed him for second place and in doing so took the championship lead.

Formula E Lucas di Grassi run a stunning race in Mexico City after starting in 18th place. Pitting on lap 17 of a 45 lap race for a new rear wing should make managing the energy to the end too much of a compromise between saving and speed. With 3 safety car stints in the race, di Grassi held onto his lead and ended Sebastien Buemi’s three-race winning streak and closed the championship lead down to just five points.

"challenges" you. A good example of this type of road is the Stelvio Pass, Switzerland/Italy. Widely known in the Biking community, this passed into the wider consciousness thanks to Larry, Curly and Moe..nee Top Gear presenters. That means that the Stelvio is now almost always "busy" with vehicles ranging from Ducati pannigales to 30 foot long "mobile" homes!!!??....It does NOT make for an enjoyable ride!! But then, every now and then...when the planets align and the Sun is in it´s Zenith phase....and there´s little or no traffic?? Well, then..THEN..it is truly spectacular and an undoubted contender for World´s Greatest Road. The last time I went, some years ago, it was such a day. early, fresh (as we say up North!) and clear. Oh how I laughed into my Caeberg as I negotiated switchback after switchback, leaving minute scrapings of my motorcycle (expensive scrapings!!) on each successive climbing corner for just under 40 kilometers, before repeating it down the far side!! Truly an unforgettable experience. But, and (as Shakespeare said) here´s the Rub!!! Four days (and Five countries) later, as I glided smoothly up the San Bernadino Pass Switzerland/France; I reflected on how much of a different experience it was to the adrenaline soaked "adventure" I´d had on the Stelvio. I looked around and gazed in awe at the panoramic vistas to either side of me (and, most importantly, didn't crash as a result!! LOL). Relishing the meditative serenity of "being at one" with the environment around me, rather than focusing on the feed back from the tyres, suspension, engine etc as the road "challenged" me and machine. I didn't finish the ride on an adrenaline pumped "High". It was more like...I'd undergone 2 hours meditation, simultaneously being massaged (by a lovely Lady of course!!) whilst listening to Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here!

A group of riders meet on Thursdays at 9.30am (weather permitting) at Waldermars, La Florida. Call 671 826 201 or email mollyandbaileybassett@hotmail.com if you fancy joining them.

Ride 38: WHAT MAKES A GREAT ROAD? or "WHAT HAVE THE ROMANS EVER DONE FOR US?!" What makes a great road? I mean, they´re all over the place, but I bet not many would vote an inner city road as being in their Top Ten? Likewise the spreading urbanisation that seeps outwards and into the countryside. OK, yes they are generally well maintained, well lit, with good signage and fresh (ish) road markings!! (remember, everything´s relative folks!!). But those "speed" humps??!! Ugffff!! Here on the Coast especially, it´s no wonder there has been a trend to more upright bikes with longer travel suspension. Some folks will tell you that a great road is one that

Here in Spain we are blessed with not only some of the best roads in Europe, but also an unusual number of them too!! From the N 625 in the Picos de Europa in the North to the A 397, Andalusia in the south and all manner of Highways and Byways in between, Spain, and Europe in general has some of the greatest biking roads......cue Clarksonesque voice... in the world!! Make yourself a promise...."This year I WILL do that trip, I WILL ride the ....insert road of choice....!!" And DO IT!! before Big Brother realises just how much fun and it is and either: A) taxes it beyond the reach of the "Plebs" or B) bans it altogether...probably on the grounds of "saving the planet" yeah RIGHT!!! The truth is, a GREAT ROAD is one you keep telling your mates (and anyone else who will listen!) about. One you immediately want to go and "Do" again. And again...and again.... One that leaves such a lasting impression on YOU, that the experience is almost Spiritual!! NOW!! GO RIDE...NOW...GO ON..GO!!!! Stay Safe, El Guiri

A Funny Thing Happened.... by Richard O’Rourke In a new series of articles Richard O’Rourke recalls some amusing incidents which occurred during his time as roving photographer and reporter for Motoring News in the 1980s and ‘90s.

HOT WHISKEYS IN A SMALL WORLD In the 70’s and 80’s the RAC Rally of Great Britain was tough, not only for the competitors but also for those who worked on the event and even for spectators who chose to follow the whole event rather than watch just one special stage nearby to where they lived. Day 1 was taken up with what were known as the Micky Mouse stages run in a loop of stately homes and theme parks designed to give spectators a close up look at the rally cars and stars. Days 2, 3 and 4 were the meat of the rally and were run in the forests of England, Wales and Scotland and with very little rest or sleep they provided one of the sternest tests on the World Rally calendar. In those days the forestry stages were kept secret because it was thought that the volume of spectators would be too great for the organisers to police. Of course those with a modicum of ingenuity (or inside info) could figure out which forests were being used and another way of doing this was to latch onto a car with a press sticker and follow it to the forest and then blag your way in past the marshals. Following the rally as a press photographer was a serious business and I always insisted on treating it just like competing on the event by using a suitable car (quick but comfy) and having a competent navigator. My regular partner for the RAC was my ex rally navigator and former ATC work colleague, Dermot Collins. A lover of maps and geography, Dermot was also very good company and had a great sense of humour which made the annual trip from Ireland a pleasure. We would check in at Rally HQ in Bath, Chester, York or wherever and having collected our rally pack would then head for our base in the Beaufort Arms in Holywell, North Wales where we would be welcomed by our hosts Emile and Mary Moore. From there we were never far from the action and were always assured of a good steak and a bar that rarely closed. A chat with Motoring News

Rallies Ed, David Williams (DKW) would sort out which stages I was covering and from there it was down to Dermot to guide me to the action. On one such trip we found ourselves, late at night heading across mid Wales towards Llanfan forest and, as we had a few hours to spare, we stopped for refreshment in the village of Tregaron. There was light coming from a pub so we ventured in to be greeted by the stony silence only strangers in a small village can experience. Having broken the ice by explaining that we were Irish and over for the rally the temperature warmed a little but the breaking point came when I told the landlord I was from Cork. Then came one of the strangest statements I have ever heard. “ Cork you say. I have a very good friend in Cork but I’ve never met him”. (I can’t write in a Welsh accent but use your imagination here.) Turns out mine host was a ham radio fan and owner of a giant mast in the back garden of the pub and one of his fellow hams was this friend in Cork. Just to be polite I asked for his name and when he replied “Don O’Hare” I said I knew him, in fact I was very good friends with his son, also Don, who drove a Triumph TR4. Well, t’was like the return of the prodigal son. We were suddenly welcome to stay until it was time to go and see the rally and would we like some soup and sandwiches? When we were fed and watered (beered!) we asked if he would fill our thermos flask with boiling water and having done this we headed out into the cold November night (2am actually) and up the road to Llanafan in convoy with our newfound Welsh friends. Standing in the freezing forest and in the company of many foreign spectators from Scandinavia, Japan and England, Dermot produced the bottle of Jameson (duty free, purchased on the ferry on the way over), brown sugar, lemon and cloves and with the flask of hot water manufactured hot whiskeys, the smell of which perme-

ated the forest like a magic shroud. The Japanese in particular were curious to know what this concoction was and we explained that it was the elixir of the devil and only to be taken by cold rally fans late at night to ward off the evil spirits. A few samples later and the Japs were the recipients of the inner warmth that only an Irish hottie can impart. Satisfied that we had done our bit for the Irish whiskey industry I got on with the job of taking a few snaps (most were in focus) and then, at some ungodly hour, we set off again, bidding farewell to our Welsh friends and heading towards our next rendezvous with the travelling rally circus. We were often tired, cold, wet and miserable but the night stages on the RAC had a magic about them that was hard to explain. The smell of pine trees, petrol, food, hot exhausts and hot whiskies was like a drug and the multinational nature of the event added to the atmosphere. Each group cheered on their fellow countrymen but it was all hands to the wheel in if a driver fell off the road and we would push and pull and lift until he was on his way again with “thank you” a toot on the horn.

Chatenet Speedino Microcar Having been brought up with a diet of action movies such as James Bond, Transporter, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Smoky and the Bandit and of course, Fast and Furious (pick a number) plus a vast array of video games, one of the more frustrating things about being a teenage car nut in Spain, is that you can't legally drive on public roads, until you are 18. Or can you? There is but one way around this and that is to pass your moped or motorbike licence and then pick up one of those those funny little Microcars with the Yellow licence plate. Find a suitable insurance company, and away you go... four wheels on the road instead of two. For anyone over 18, they can be driven sin carnet, without having to pass a test. And the SUMA: 10€ a year. Having been brought up sitting on his dad's knee and steering sports cars and American Muscle cars around an expansive car park from the tender age of just two, when he lived in Miami Beach, sixteen year old Brandon Nicol is now the proud owner of a fairly rare, Chatenet Speedino. With only about fifty or less of these classy little two seater convertibles in Spain, it's a guaranteed head turner, as even the most ardent car buff wants to know what the heck it is. Chatenet is a French Company who for more than a quarter of a century have made light trucks as well as being one of France's top mircocar makers. In 2006 when Brandon's car was produced, the Speedino was an exclusive vehicle; a luxury convertible with all the extras. The downside is, for a speed crazy youngster, that they are not fast (think around 60k top speed) and with a passenger, struggle going up hill. The Speedino has an Italian made Lombardini Diesel injection engine, that is designed to travel at 43kph. Although limited to a 505cc, two stroke diesel, his little car offers comfort, a touch of style, stands out from the crowd and is economical. Back in 2006, these sold for 14,500€, more than a typical small hatchback. The reason being that all microcars are primarily hand built kit cars with small engines. This has leather seats, electric windows (open a door and the window automatic retracts a couple of inches so you don't snag the door on the roof ), radio, bluetooth, central locking, fog lights, and reversing sensors as standard. This is a big microcar, being longer than a Smart Car and a boot that happily swallows up half a dozen reusable shopping bags, with space behind the front seats for more bags, or a bigger sound system. This car is fun to drive and must be one of, if not the most economic sports cars on the planet. A stylish cabriolet you can use all year round; a superb car for running about town and it's even ideal as a second vehicle for towing behind a motorhome, or his dad's MX5, when they get the hidden tow-bar fitted, for taking it to shows that bit further away. The other advantage is that spending two years driving a microcar around the busy Torrevieja streets, makes the transition to learning to drive a 'real' car, all that much easier. Weighing less than 300 kilos, the pleasure of driving is optimal and, with its highly aerodynamic mini roadster external design, this less than three metre long minicar is an ideal runaround for getting into and out of the town centre. With a 20 litre petrol tank, it can travel up to 400 km without refuelling. Turning to its safety, the Speedino features a good equipment level with its composite monohull structure, its double-sided electro-zinc plated steel chassis, its front disc brakes, its belt winders and its Securit windows. When launched, the Speedino was very successful in France and especially Italy, where it is seen as a chic intermediate between a scooter and a conventional car. Having a limited top speed has its challenges when thinking about going on a longer run, as you have to plan ahead and try to avoid the N332. Except of course if going to and from Zenia Blvd, especially in summer, when traffic can not move any faster than this can travel anyway. Convertible Microcars are few and far between and the rare Speedino will continue to turn heads for many years to come as everyone asks themselves, “What's the make and name of that car?” Thanks to Keith and Brandon Nicol for this article and keep your eyes out for Brandon around the local area.
