With the weather still so warm over here, we check out what everyone needs for the ultimate beach day; the good old VW Camper Van. The very image of them invokes lazy, sunny afternoons or if your memory recalls British holidays, maybe huddling in them to escape the rain. Well, we bid a fond farewell to the iconic ride in our feature on page 13 and show you what you can spend your money on to remember them on page 7. To celebrate all things Halloween, we have some spooked out rides and a very fitting new bike from Bad Boyz. We say a sad goodbye to a local man who was instrumental in making the car club scene what it is today in this corner of Spain and to one of the ladies in F1. We have details about a couple of fun charity events taking place in December: The Crisismas Santa Run and an event the Ricardo Tormo F1 racing circuit in Cheste, Valencia for children with learning disabilites. Kia updated their reasonably priced car the cee'd last year but now for the very first time the South Korean manufacturer introduces their first ever performance model. It’s called the pro_cee’d GT and it will compete against the fast hatchback market; the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI. It will be powered by a new turbocharged version of Kia's 1.6ltr 'Gamma' engine, giving 204bhp and 265Nm of torque.
0-60mph in 7.4 seconds with a maximum speed of 143mph. It comes standard with lots of sport features: 18” alloys, Recaro seats, dual exhaust pipes and is available in two specs, GT and GT Tech. The Tech includes some nice extras like heated front seats, 7" touchscreen and sat-nav. It's very stylish and up to date in design in and out. As with all new Kias it comes with a seven year/100,000 mile warranty. To mark the introduction there will be a limited launch model, 'GT 1st Edition' but only 500 units will be produced. Virtual Lamborghini. The magnificent Lamborghini Museum has 16,000 sq. feet set over two floors of gleaming Lambos, but it's located in Sant’Agata Bolognese, between Bologna and Modena, Italy. Yes, those nosey people from Google have brought their Street View feature indoors, so you can navigate around the museum and see high-definition panoramic photos of the whole place. You can even get inside the cars, something we're sure you couldn't do if you actually went to the museum. Go on have a browse, search for "Museo Lamborghini" on Google Maps and view the impressive collection, which includes every model ever made as well as rare concept cars and the Lambo racers.
María de Villota
Such sad news to hear that María de Villota died last month as a consequence of injuries she sustained during the crash in July 2012 in the UK. She had recently married in Seville and was due to launch her book last month: 'La vida es un regalo' (Life is a Gift), hauntingly true words. We send our condolences to her husband and family.
It's A Sign. 50 years ago, a report recommended a cohesive and comprehensive system for road signage and what appeared was so good that it still exists in almost its original form today. Speed limits, give way and directions signs were all carefully designed to be clear to drivers even travelling at speed. Before the report, the road signage in use was a mishmash of assorted shapes and sizes authorised by everyone from the Ministry of Transport to motoring organisations. But a sign designer called Jock Kinneir and his former student Margaret Calvert took up the challenge, after success with their striking blue and white motorway signs for the first 72 mile stretch of the then newly built M1. One of the revolutionary ideas was to use upper and lower case letters, since words are more easily recognised in this form at speed rather than in all capitals. They also removed words from warning signs and replaced them with easy to understand pictures and a bold red outline to catch the eye. Even today, the same colour scheme is used: motorways blue, B roads have green signs with yellow for road numbers, and the small roads have black on white. Frozen Black. The textured paint has a shimmering matt finish and a velvet effect which can be seen and felt. No Licence But Driving for 40 Years. A UK motorist was caught driving without a licence or insurance in Birmingham last month. Astonishingly, the man has been driving for 40 years, but has never passed his test or applied for a licence. His car has been seized and impounded and the penalties for driving without a licence include a fine of £1,000, a driving ban and a ban on being able to obtain a licence for a period of time.

The End of the Road for the
Volkswagen Camper Van It’s the end of an era as the Volkswagen Camper Van ceases production later this year. To be fair, we didn’t know it was still being made! In the last 63 years, over 10 million Volkswagen Buses have been made and will still be manufactured in Brazil until the end of the year. VW said it had decided it could not change production to meet new laws being imposed in the South American country which meant all new vehicles must have air bags and anti-lock braking systems from 2014. A final limited edition of the classic Type 2 Kombi will be produced.
The VW Camper Van is a style icon and its very being suggests freedom, the open road and happy times. It was the first van made specifically to be camped inside with in built appliances. It was quickly adopted by the hippies of the 1960s, many of them painting and customising to their own individual styles. The classic icon status was sealed when the Camper Van was featured in the ‘Scooby-Doo’ cartoon as the Type I ‘Mystery Machine’. Steve Jobs apparently sold his Camper in the 1970s to buy a circuit board to build a computer that helped launch Apple. The van made an appearance on Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys record album covers. The Camper has more recently featured in a video with girl band ‘The Saturdays’. The stylish group returned the image of the van to its sexy 1960s image, bringing it to a new generation.
Thankfully, the much loved Camper Van is one of the most sought-after and looked-after vehicles, meaning there are a whole host of them out there to look at. You can find hundreds of them at the VW Shows in the UK, all in various states of repair or having undergone strange customisation.

The 2012 Event This is an invitation from the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club (JEC) in Spain to participate in this remarkable event that is taking place for the tenth year at the Ricardo Tormo F1 racing circuit in Cheste, Valencia. Children with learning disabilities are driven around the circuit by the owners of classic cars and sports cars. Last year over 500 children took part in this magical event. JEC Spain Chairman Eric Arnold said after last year’s event ”Not only will I remember the thrill on the children’s faces but to be fair I will also remember the experience of taking my car on a thorough bred racing circuit, it’s not often you get the chance to use a track for free and give pleasure to some people not as fortunate as you at the same time”. On the day hundreds of classic cars turn up, register, chat, queue up in the pit lane, collect a child, two or three laps on the track, back to the pit lane, collect another child, etc etc for about two hours. If you want to participate in the event, please note that it is for classic cars or special cars only, only cars over 25 years old, except slightly younger supercars ie Ferraris, Lamborghinis, etc. It’s not only Jaguars. That restriction only applies to those cars that will get the free track pass, anybody can come to the event as a spectator. The JEC are planning a convoy from Alicante but it will be an early start, around 08:30. 2013 6th October Yeongam, Korea Sebastian Vettel started on pole once again and held his lead as Romain Grosjean jumped Lewis Hamilton to run in second place. An incident at the start happened when Felipe Massa made a fast start and then slid backwards into the path of his team-mate Fernando Alonso, forcing the Spaniard onto the runoff area. The top three stayed the same through the early half of the race, but Lewis began to lose pace. Then Sergio Pérez suffered a tyre failure on lap 31, which brought out the safety car and bunched the cars up. Sebastian raced away on the restart, eager to re open the gap he had before. Adrian Sutil hit Mark Webber's car and put him out of the Start in Spain race. Kimi Räikkönen took second from teammate Romain just before the second safety car period. Sebastian went onto comfortably take the win, with Kimi finishing second and Romain taking third, getting two Lotus’s on the podium. Nico Hülkenberg fended off both Lewis and Fernando Alonso in the closing stages to take his career best fourth.
13th October Suzuka, Japan Sebastian Vettel took his fifth consecutive win with teammate Mark Webber finishing second. Mark started on pole but Lotus's Romain Grosjean made a fantastic start, moving up from fourth to take the lead. Sebastian was second on the grid, but was hit by Lewis Hamilton on the run down to the first corner. The touch punctured Lewis’s tyre and damaged his rear bodywork, which caused him to retire shortly after. Romain maintained his lead through the first round of pit stops, with Mark and Sebastian behind. Mark was on a three stop strategy, while the other two were on two stops. Romain pitted for the last time 8 laps ahead of Sebastian, but this gave the Red Bull driver the edge and he overtook the Frenchman and went onto win. After a few attempts, Mark finally managed to overtake Romain with two laps to go. Romain finished third again, with Fernando Alonso finishing in fourth.
27th October New Delhi, India Sebastian Vettel drove like a champion and became the Champion for the fourth consecutive year, one of only three drivers to ever do so: Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher being the other two. Alain Prost has also won four titles, although not on the trot. It was a double for Red Bull as they also took the Constructors’ Championship, also for the fourth year running. Sebastian controlled the race from the start as Fernando Alonso had a bad start, he was hit and needed to pit early for a new front wing. He never had the pace and finished in 11th. Mark Webber looked set for a podium, but suffered another retirement due to alternator failure. Nico Rosberg took second place, ahead of driver of the day Romain Grosjean, who did a one-stop race, running 46 laps on a set of mediums, having started in 17th place! Sebastian celebrated by doing 'doughnut' spins on the pit straight, before bowing to his car and abandoning it there against protocol. He was subsequently reprimanded and Red Bull fined £21,300 for not going straight to parc ferme. Does he care? I guess not, it was great for the fans who cheered him all the way and he said thanks to them on the podium as he was interviewed by David Coulthard. He revealed on the podium how he had been affected by the boos he had received in Belgium, Britain, Canada and Singapore. "It has not been an easy season," he said. "From the outside people will think it was easy but it wasn't. It has been hard for me in particular. To be booed when I have not done anything wrong was hard, but I think I answered it on the track, which I am very pleased about." He deserved the win and the Championship, he is a very worthy driver and winner and we congratulate him!

As well as being a member of several local car clubs Tony served on their committees, freely offering his help and advice to others, especially with 20 years experience in Spain of knowing those little jewels of workshops where a local artisan could repair or fabricate an otherwise unobtainable part.
This was a critical time for the club and it could easily have disappeared, however Tony came up with the idea of creating our own version of the Ace Café, a monthly informal meeting for all car enthusiasts that has now grown into a huge event, firmly established at Hotel La Torre in Los Montesinos.
Five years ago Tony and his wife Trish came to the rescue of the Phoenix Classic Car Club when they stepped in at short notice to fill the void of Vocal and Secretary respectively.
Whilst not intended as a recruiting ground it has certainly raised the club's profile and has attracted many new members and many invitations from other clubs and organisations.
Tony died on 15 September after a short illness. His wife Trish is continuing in her role as Club secretary and is willing to dispose of Tony's Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger to someone who can continue to use and enjoy these cars. She can be contacted via the club website.

tributes were made to Tony Mansell, the highly respected Phoenix committee member whose idea it was to hold the Ace Cafe meet in Los Montesinos. Sadly Tony passed away last month. We pay our respects to Tony on page 17. A magnificent turn out of over 90 cars seemed very fitting for such an occasion.

Ride 9: Santuario de Magdalena 14 bikes at the cafe this am, all looking shiny and much loved (which is just as it should be!). after coffee, toast and the usual 'biker bull' (lol!) we set off for tienda CV90 bike accessories shop in Catral. As normal, Jordi made us all feel most welcome and we enjoyed some 'craic' and caught up on news etc. In return, a few purchases were made as we tried to help the local economic recovery. Shopping duly shopped, it was off to Crevillente on the CV90 then the N340 over the mountain, stopping on the summit for refreshments (excellent tapa!). On down the other side to Aspe and then Novelda on the N325. The Santuario de Magdalena is a fantastic piece of architecture in the style of the Sagrada de Familia in Barcelona and provides awesome (Been watching a lot of American TV El Guiri?? The Editor) views over the surrounding countryside. Sitting alongside the castle and set amid well manicured gardens with numerous pathways it makes a really worthwhile destination. In addition, they are in the process of constructing an organ made completely out of marble (gnarf gnarf!!). Once completed, this will be the only one of it's kind (cue Jeremy Clarkson voice:) "...IN THE WORRRLD!" Out of Novelda, we took the CV840 towards La Romana and then the CV844 to Hondon de Nieves before hanging a right onto the CV845 to Hondon de Frailes. Another stop, and then up and over one of Rob's favorites, the CV873 into Albaterra. Then it was Cox, Callosa, Benejuzar and home. Thanks everyone. Stay safe, El Guiri

Marc Marquez claimed his sixth win, with Jorge Lorenzo finishing second and Valentino Rossi third. Dani Pedrosa crashed out on the sixth lap.

Dani Pedrosa took his third win this season. Marc Marquez made it a Honda one-two after an exciting battle with Jorge Lorenzo, who took third. 20th October Phillip Island, Australia A twist of fate saw Marc Marquez disqualified as he came in for a mandatory pit stop one lap too late. Jorge Lorenzo took the win and his 50th career race victory, with Dani Pedrosa finishing in second. 27th October Japan, Motegi Jorge Lorenzo took his seventh win of 2013 from pole position. He came under pressure from title leader Marquez halfway through the race, but the rookie rider made a couple of mistakes and finished in second. For the first time since 2006, the title will be decided at the final race of the season in Spain! Marquez now sits 13 points ahead of Lorenzo. What a thrilling finale it’s set to be!
