This month we have some serious stuff: Spanish Driving Laws. I think a lot of us are guilty of not learning the differences to the UK laws and we share with you some of the main ones to help you avoid a brush with the Policia. Did you know, for example, that you must stop at a stop marking on the road, even if you can clearly see that there are no other cars around? I know that one... yes I was stopped having not stopped... a fine and much confusion (on my part) at the time. And of course, we still have some flashy cars! The Paris Motor Show with all its glamour and fair share of new models was the highlight of the October calendar in the automobile world. El Guiri takes us to a beautiful hidden beach - Cala Cortina (I guess as in curtains, not Ford Cortina). We have another great quiz from Richard O’Rouke and you can win 50€! Look closely, it could be your car in the quiz! We reveal the MotoGP champion, even though the season hasn’t finished. Not so in F1 as the two Mercedes boys fight to the bitter end to raise the crown - who will it be? Calm and collected Nico or impulsive and fearless Lewis? MOTORS IN THE NEWS Fastest car in Britain. TT favourite Guy Martin claims to own the 'Fastest Car in Britain' - a 1967 Volvo. He has modified a 1967 Vox Volvo estate with supercar engineers who installed a 2.8-litre turbo charged engine and sixspeed gearbox. With 788bhp it can reach 60mph in three seconds and a top speed of 205mph 'I reckon it is about the fastest car in Britain quicker than any Ferrari, Porsche or even Bugatti,' wrote Mr Martin in a recent column for the Sunday Times.

Infiniti Support Our Paras Racing. Infiniti are to enter the British Touring Car Championship next year as title sponsor of a new not-for-profit motorsport team named Infiniti Support Our Paras Racing. Two new Infiniti Q50 race cars built to the BTCC's NGTC rulebook will join the domestic series. The cars will be driven by Richard Hawken, who has won three championships at club level and tested for the Speedworks BTCC outfit in 2013, and Derek Palmer Jr, who has raced in touring cars and sportscars. A number of injured Paratroopers will work on the cars to prepare them not only for race weekends; the team has a longterm goal of developing, training and ensuring an injured Paratrooper graduates through the racing ranks to pilot an Infiniti Support Our Paras Racing car in the future. The car is expected to hit the track for the first time towards the end of this year. Infiniti will leave the preparation of the cars to Pro Motorsport, but will supply the body shells and panels.
Ferrari F60 America. Ferrari has revealed an exclusive model, called the F60 America, to commemorate its 60th year in North America. Only ten of the new F60 Americas will be produced, and each F60 will cost £1.56 million, a significant premium over the £238,938 of the standard F12 Berlinetta, and all are already accounted for.

2014 5th October Suzuka, Japan A serious accident involving Marussia's Jules Bianchi overshadowed the race. Jules suffered a severe head injury in a crash that caused the race to be stopped early and is currently in intensive care after undergoing surgery in a Japanese hospital. The race started under the safety car due to the rain and was stopped after two laps as the rain got heavier. The race restarted and after another 8 lap safety car stint, the race really began.
"That was bravery in the extreme," said BBC F1 commentator David Coulthard. "That is an overtake other drivers will remember." Lewis extended his lead each lap, reaching 16 seconds before the race was stopped at 44 laps. The stoppage came as a result of Bianchi's crash, that happened as conditions worsened, with rain intensifying and light fading. Jules Bianchi's car had hit water on the track at Dunlop corner and aquaplaned off at the same spot where recovery vehicles were attending the Sauber of Adrian Sutil, who crashed at the same spot the lap before. Sebastian Vettel joined the Mercedes boys on the podium and a subdued celebration mirrored everybodys concern over Jules Bianchi.

Nico Rosburg kept his first position from pole and pitted ahead of Lewis Hamilton who was sitting in second only 2.2 seconds behind. By lap 24, Lewis was only 1 second behind and five laps later, he used the DRS to overtake Nico on the outside of turn one and take the lead.

Marussia decided to run only one car in the race, leaving Jules' fully prepared, but on stands in the garage. Lewis Hamilton was on pole and Nico Rosburg made a great start, but braked too late into turn two and cut the corner to take the lead, but then had to hand it back to Lewis. Nico then pitted to recover from the lock up on both wheels and rejoined on the harder 'medium' tyre. Lewis drove a steady race and went on unchallenged to take the win. Nico moved up the pack, eventually overtaking second-placed Valtteri Bottas to finish in second, leaving Valtteri in third. Lewis has now won 9 of the races this season with Nico on four. Lewis matches Nigel Mansell's record for most wins by a Briton, standing at 31. The Mercedes double meant that Mercedes won the constructors' title for the first time ever. Lewis dedicated his win to Jules Bianchi, saying "It would be great to dedicate it to him and his family, It would make a very small difference to them, but every bit of positive energy hopefully will help. We all need to be sending positive vibes that way." This was the first F1 race in Russia and was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was instrumental in making Bernie Ecclestone's 30-year wish, of a race here, come true. Russia is paying a reputed $50m (£31m) a year for the race, believed to be the largest hosting fee of any grand prix.

Main Differences between UK and Spanish Traffic law David from Club Torrevieja Clasicos Red has passed onto us some of the main differences in the traffic laws between the UK (where most of our readers passed their driving tests) and Spain. It is very useful information to residents and holidaymakers alike. I have lived here for 14 years and didn’t know two of them! This follows on from the article about the changes to Spanish Traffic Law we brought you with Spanish Insurance in the summer.
1: The law does not stop at the end of the highway. It includes private roads, your driveway and even supermarket car parks. A friend was stopped and fined for not having their seat belt buckled up in a supermarket car park in La Zenia. 2: Hogging the middle lane is classed as dangerous driving. It will get you a caution or a fine and the possibility of a prison sentence. Once you have overtaken you should move back into the inside lane which is why the Spanish often cut you up. 3: The stop line means just that. You must stop even if nothing is coming. This is now a criminal offence and you risk a spell in prison plus a fine. 4: Cyclists can legally ride in twos. You must leave 1.5m clearance when overtaking. They can also ride in a peleton or group and they have priority over vehicles at unmarked crossing. 5: There is zero tolerance on speeding. 10 years ago I went to my first meeting of a Spanish Classic Car Club in Orihuela, it was dominated by the Seat 600 bolstered by a handful of small Renaults and Citroens. How things change and maybe the TV Discovery Channel has had an influence with programs like “Fast and Loud ,” “Counting Cars” or any of the dozen or so American based shows. So to show that we welcome all tastes at our meetings, we feature a pair of Pick-ups that began life as a general workhorse and utility vehicle, both are now restored and modified with wide tyres, attitude and chrome aplenty. Then there is “Old Smoky” with more wood than a Morris 1000 Traveller, it might even be practical enough for the weekly shop in Mercadona! Take a closer look at the young lady getting out of the back of the car; someone has brought her a refreshing cuppa and left it on the running board! Phoenix Car Club

8th Anniversary Dinner On Sunday 19th October 36 members and friends met at the Golf Club in Quesada for a slap up meal. Our new President elect Keith Lakin greeted everyone and after pre-meal drinks everyone settled in the restaurant and started discussing the menu, and with a choice of 9 starters and 10 main courses there was much to discuss and translate in to German and Norwegian for the benefit of our foreign members. The service and quality of food was second to none and the portions very generous, to finish there was half a dozen deserts to choose from – none of which could be call diet options. So after all that food and a couple of glasses of wine , people were sitting back very contentedly. Keith finished the evening by thanking everyone for attending. Ride 18: Cala Cortina Travelling south on the AP7, take the exit marked 'Los Urrutias' and follow the signs for El Algar and onto La Union on the N332. La Union was our first stop, a smallish (pop. approx. 16,000) town that lies just east of Cartagena. It has a history of mining dating back to Roman times, with commercial mining only having ceased as recently as 1991!! There's a Parque de Minera (Mine Museum) in the town that covers over 50,000 square meters (4,000 of which are open to the public). It has great reviews and is an interesting place to visit, especially if you were brought up on school history lessons of the Industrial Revolution etc. There is an entry fee and you really should book via their web page (although I HAVE just turned up and got in OK in the past!). The town has numerous old buildings that are 'easy on the eye'. In particular, the old Mercano Publico, a superb example of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Modernistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; style by architect Victor Beltri, native of Cartagena. The minerals gleaned from the mines by the Romans were transported all around the Mediterranean via the nearby Portus Magnus; present day Portman! In fact, the region's largest Roman mosaic can be found there in the Roman Archaeological Museum housed in the old Charity Hospital building. From there, join the F43 (signed; Llano de Beal and El Estrecho) and you will see the Autovia the other side of El Estrecho. Join the Autovia (direction of Cabo de Palos) but take the next exit signed for 'La Manga Resort'. This is the RM314 that runs through the well known golf course complex into Portman. Once past the golf course, the road starts to get interesting, with curves and sweeping bends aplenty. Be careful on the ones with blind exits though as they love to cut the corners here as we all know by now eh? The RM314 morphs into the N345 somewhere around the point where the bends stop climbing and begin dropping back down to the N332 again. A short ride along the N332 to the junction for the A30/CT33 (signed for Alumbres and Escombreras). Following the signs for Escombreras, you enter a landscape akin to a Bond movie! The petrol/gas industry having replaced the mining industry of the Romans. Ignore the smell and continue in the direction of Cartagena (by now you're back on the N345 again!). Before you know it, you're catapulted out of a tunnel and into something closer to Paradise than Petroleum Refinery!! Drive/ride slowly here guys, cos the views are
unbelievable! After a very short distance you will come upon the real 'Hidden Gem' of this route and our destination: Cala Cortina. This beach is best found by keeping your eyes peeled for the sign for Mares Bravas restaurant. Hang a left, but go steady as the narrow road doubles back on itself and passes under the N345 to reach the Restaurant and beach. It has to be one of the best beaches on the south eastern coast, sheltered as it is on both sides and with deep but gentle waters. The Mares Bravas does excellent paella, sea food and fish dishes and is reasonably priced given it's location. Stay safe, El Guiri

GP 2014 Champion MarcUSA Marquez 28th Sept Aragon, Aragon The race started in dry conditions, but both Valentino Rossi and Andrea Iannone had big crashes before the rain began to fall. Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa then went down in the wet conditions, leaving Jorge Lorenzo in command of the race. He changed bikes with 4 laps to go as the rain began to fall heavily and took the win ahead of Aleix Espargaro and Cal Crutchlow. 12th Oct Motegi, Japan Marc Marquez won the 2014 MotoGP title by finishing runner-up to Jorge Lorenzo with 3 races still to run. To be crowned champion in Honda's home round Marquez needed to beat team-mate Dani Pedrosa, lose no more than three points to Valentino Rossi and no more than 15 to Lorenzo. Valentino Rossi took third. 19th Oct Phillip Island Another incident-filled race was witnessed as leader Marc Marquez crashed out whilst leading with 10 laps to go. He was one of the 9 riders who crashed or didn't finish. Valentino Rossi started from 8th and took his 82nd premier win. Jorge Lorenzo finished second after Cal Crutchlow went down in front of him on the last lap. Bradley Smith rounded up the podium. 26th Malaysia, Malaysia Marc Marquez lost his pole advantage to Jorge Lorenzo, then Valentino Rossi took the lead halfway through the race only to be overtaken by Marquez two laps later. It was Marquez's12th win of his second season in MotoGP, equaling Mick Doohan’s record of most premier class victories in a single season. The result seals the premier class Constructor’s title for Honda and ends a run of four Yamaha victories.

Easy Rider Harley-Davidson Sold. The iconic motorbike ridden by Peter Fonda in cult 1969 film Easy Rider has become the most valuable in the world after it sold at auction to a mystery buyer for a £840,000. The Captain America bike was complete with authenticating documents including a letter from Peter Fonda. The red, white and blue stars-and-stripes panhead chopper was designed and built by two African-American bike builders, Cliff Vaughs and Ben Hardy, based on design suggestions from Mr Fonda. Fastest Woman on a Motorbike. Becci Ellis broke the land speed record for a woman on a motorbike by going 264mph on a 500bhp Suzuki Hayabusa which had been modified by her husband. The British mother-of-two smashed the existing fastest land speed by 20mph and is just 30mph behind the overall world record set by the late American rider Bill Warner. Becci is the fourth fastest rider in the world and said “I think my record will stand for some time. 20mph is a big increase - it's the biggest increase in 40 years. I'll keep trying to set speed records for as long as I can. I've no intention of stopping any time soon”.
