There’ s been a lot happening this last month and we have squeezed in as much as we can! Locally, we had the Virauto Car Show in Almoradi and the ever-popular Ace Cafe in Los Montesinos. Richard O’Rourke shares his photos with us and, of course, his monthly summary from the motorsport world. The guys from Car Broker Spain attended the WRC in Catalunya and said it was “awesome”. They’ve made a report and you can read it on page 23. The Paris Motor Show took place as well last month, see what cars made it into our top selection on page 14. Jill Carter looks into classic car values and how they have increased lately and offers advice on buying a classic car for investment purposes. How Land Rover launched the new Discovery Land Rover unveiled the Discovery with the help of the world’s largest ever Lego model, a recreation of London’s Tower Bridge made from 5,805,846 individual bricks. This smashed the previous Guinness World Record (a Lego Star Wars X-Wing Fighter) by 470,646 pieces. Laid end to end, it is said that the bricks would stretch for almost 200 miles, or from Tower Bridge in London to Paris. The build was led by Duncan Titmarsh, the UK’s only Lego Certified Professional, and took five months to construct. It was erected in the grounds of Packington Hall, Warwickshire, which is close to the Solihull plant where the Discovery will be built. The new seven seat Discovery embodies Land Rover’s drive to go Above and Beyond, combining British desirability with an unstoppable spirit of adventure. It is highly desirable with unrivalled capability and technology like no other. It is slightly longer and narrower than the outgoing model and by dispensing with the body-on-frame architecture of the previous model has saved 350kg. Prices will start at £43,495. Long-term Land Rover Discovery owners Bear Grylls, Sir Ben Ainslie and Zara Phillips took part in the spectacular event.

Classic Cars Insurance Value and for Investment Jill Carter

Do you have realistic insurance for your classic car? When did you last discuss replacement value with your insurer? In the uncertainty of post-Brexit Britain the need to ensure that your classic car is insured for an agreed sum is most important. The value of classic cars has continued to rise over the past decade and it is vital to keep abreast of recent trends in the market. A substantial number of classic car owners are thought to be under insured and in the event of a claim may find themselves sadly out of pocket for replacement value. Most insurers look to auction prices as the guide to current values but this can distort the private market as only approximately 10% of classic cars are sold at auction compared with 90% privately. The media and other instituations only have access to auction prices hence their usefulness. Cars that sell well are in original condition together with a complete or extensive history. Insurance valuations are given by marque clubs which will be of help in negotiating a sensible insurance value however it is important to remember that for insurance purposes you need to calculate the probable price for replacement. For the wealthy owners of Lambourghini Countach's and Miura's the cars have proven to be sound investments having made outstanding gains, for example you could have picked up a Miura in 2002 for about £65,000 which is a snip compared to todays asking price of £3 million! Classic cars as an investment is a very specialised market as the prices vary greatly model to model in most marques, also fashion changes and what is flavour of the month today may not be next year. Cars that are from a small production run are worth looking out for. A 1962 Lotus Elite Super 95, one of only twenty-three, in excellent unrestored condition with full history sold for well above its estmate at Bonhams Goodwood Revival in September for over £103,000. It was bought privately for £25,000 eight years previously. Choose a car that you can afford, like and will enjoy driving and it will be much more fun than the bottom line on a bank statement providing it is well maintained. Choose wisely and it will prove to be cheap motoring with the possibility of a windfall when you come to sell.

At present no drastic change in the market has occurred that can be identified as a post-Brexit effect but it is likely that with the devaluation in real terms of the pound to major currencies that more classic cars will leave the UK to overseas buyers enjoying a 20% drop in prices (October 2016). It is expected that the best cars will continue to hold or increase in value much to the benefit of specialist dealers and auction houses. One of Britain’s leading financier of classic and collectable cars, Classic & Sports Finance, says the outlook for the classic car market remains cautiously optimistic, following the British public’s decision to leave the European Union. Robert Johnson, managing director at Classic & Sports Finance, said: “While there is still plenty of uncertainty about the future of the wider UK economy following the referendum result, the outlook for the classic car market is largely positive. Lower interest rates will drive investment in classic cars, while exchange rates will not affect the majority of UK buyers, and credit remains readily available. While there are concerns about the free movement of cars and people, it is too early to say whether restrictions will come into effect.” This article mainly looks towards the UK classic car market but it can be used as a rough guide for many foreign markets.

The Other One That Got Away by Bruce Rowbotham When car fans talk about cars that are timeless or instantly recognisable across the ages, then it's the traditional Morgans or the generations of Porsche 911s that usually spring to mind. But living in their shadows must be the less glamorous utility Land Rover. Their Series and Defender range ran from 1948 to 2016 and were driven by everyone from Royalty to the Armed Forces and by farmers everywhere. They pioneered overland expeditions throughout the world decades before the Japanese and their Toyota Land Cruiser arrived on the 4x4 scene. The Series One Land Rovers were built on a strong box section chassis with a rugged engine and gearbox, giving 8 forward gears through high and low range capable of delivering drive to both axles. Their slab sided body panels were formed in birmabright. (Birmabright - a lightweight sheet metal in an alloy of aluminium and magnesium, so lightweight they used it on the body panels of Donald Campbell's Bluebird K7 for his water speed record attempt.) The Series One Land Rover could not have been made more basic and simple. From 1948 to 1968 there was a Civil Defence Corps in Britain consisting 75,000 staff, mainly volunteers and a pool of vehicles comprising of 1950's Bedford R and S type lorries, the most famous being the Green Goddess fire appliances and a large fleet of Series 1 Land Rovers. Many of these vehicles had the registration prefix SFX and led gentle and sheltered lives, especially as the role of Civil Defence gradually diminished. When the Corps was disbanded in 1968 the vehicles were withdrawn and stored by the Home Office, mothballed on a “Care and Maintenance” basis. The Land Rovers gradually trickled onto the civilian market in the 1980's and despite some being being almost 30 years old they were in perfect condition. You will probably remember that whilst mothballed, the Green Goddess Fire Appliances made high profile public appearances during the Fireman's Strikes and were only finally disposed of in 2005.

We lived in the James Herriot Country of the Yorkshire Dales, usually with plenty of snow in winter and almost everyone drove a 4x4 as a practical working transport solution rather than as a statement of fashion. Our Land Rover was not our everyday vehicle although it was pressed into the occasional school run during the heavy snowfalls. It's main purpose was as a source of rural recreation and finding places to challenge the vehicle's ability was easy, as there were plenty of muddy trails available if you knew the local farmers. In the farming community somehow everyone remembered their dad or granddad having an old “Series One” on the farm. So getting bogged down, tackling impossible gradients, fording rivers and winching out of swamps was all part of the fun of “4x4 Off Roading.” A flask of tea and a few sandwiches sustained us as we wrestled with hi-lift jacks, chains and straps as our convoy of Off Roaders battled on. It was all about the challenge. Despite heaping abuse on an already 40 years old car, it never failed to amaze me. The poor thing never let me down, it thrived on neglect and could always hold it's own against all comers. I finally sold the vehicle in 1999 for £950, a little more than I had paid for it, so it provided me with over a decade of cheap and practical entertainment. But like the TVR Grantura (CCT Sept 2016) that I always regretted selling, take a look at E-Bay and try to find a Series One today for less than £10.000. Maybe it's another one that got away....

In 1986 I acquired an ex-Civil Defence Series One Short wheel Base Land Rover SFX 822 first registered in 1957. After it's eventual release from the Home Office about five years earlier, it had seen gentle service as a maintenance vehicle at Bradford Hospital. It's gentle life came to an abrupt end when it arrived at our house.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2016 It’s coming near the end of the year and that time when titles are won and lost and last month we saw Seb Ogier win the World Rally Championship and Marc Marquez win the Moto GP title. Thankfully the F1 pot is still up for grabs and looks like going all the way to the final race in Abu Dhabi on November 27th. WRC The Corsica round of the WRC proved to be an easy victory for Sebastien Ogier as he eased his way towards the 2016 title. Kris Meeke was the only driver to keep pace with the Frenchman but a puncture put paid to his challenge. Neuville finished second in the Hyundai with Mikkelsen keeping his slim championship hopes alive with third. Spain’s Dani Sordo was the star of Rally Catalunya which was based just up the road in Salou. The only WRC round to feature both loose and tarmac surfaces was afflicted by the heavy rain on the first two days and Sordo drove brilliantly in his Hyundai to take a healthy lead into the tarmac stages on Saturday and Sunday. The rain had by now stopped and Ogier set about catching Sordo. He drove like a man possessed and eventually overtook the Spaniard to take victory and the World Championship title by virtue of the fact that Mikkelsen had crashed out, thus ending his challenge. Ogier became champion for the fourth time joining greats such as Tommi Makkinen, Juha Kankunnen and Sebastian Loeb on that number. See page 23 for more on Rally Catalunya. Formula One The Malaysian GP got off to a hectic start when Rosberg, Vettel and Verstappen clashed on the first lap leaving Rosberg in last place and Vettel out of the race. Hamilton, meanwhile, led the race and looked like

taking an easy win until his engine blew up on lap 41 of 56. A gift turned into a disaster as Rosberg flew through the field from last place to third to take a 23 point lead in the championship. Daniel Ricciardo won the race and celebrated in fine style with his shoey champagne drink with team mate Verstappen in second. Rosberg was given a 10 sec penalty for nudging Raikkonen out of the way during his relentless charge but this was of no consequence in the end as he finished well ahead of the Finn. Yet another very poor start by Hamilton at the Japanese GP dropped him to eighth place while Rosberg took a flag to flag win and a 33 point lead in the championship. Hamilton did recover to third place behind Verstappen but the damage was done and Rosberg now just need to finish second in the remaining four races to clinch the title. The first and third places ensured Mercedes of a constructors championship victory but all eyes are now on the drivers as they battle it out for the right to be crowned 2016 champ. All eyes were on Rosberg and Hamilton at the USA GP and Hamilton got a great start to take the lead from Ricciardo and Rosberg. This remained the position until lap 31 of 51 when Verstappen stopped and caused a Virtual Safety Car which ruined Ricciardo’s race as the Mercs pitted and came back out in 1-2 formation. Hamilton went on to win the race but Rosberg’s second position leaves him in the more comfortable position of needing two seconds and a third from the remaining races in Mexico, Brazil and Abu Dhabi. Here’s hoping that it all goes down to a final race showdown in the Gulf.

Moto GP The Japanese Moto GP at Motegi was all about Marc Marquez and Honda. Marquez took the lead at the halfway point and when both Yamahas (Rossi and Lorenzo) crashed out he cruised home ahead of Dovizioso (Ducati) and Viñales (Suzuki) to savour the victory on Honda’s home track on the 50th anniversary of Honda entering the top flight of motorcycle racing. Couldn’t have been better! Cold and wet weather at Phillip Island upset the grid and the tyre boffins at the Australian Moto round. Marquez led initially and looked like taking an easy win but was caught out by the decreasing track temperature and crashed when his front tyre lost grip. Cal Crutchlow then took the lead and pulled away from Rossi who finished second ahead of the Suzuki of Viñales. It was heart in mouth time as Cal counted down the laps and kept the heat in his tyres by riding as fast as he could without pushing too hard. He held his nerve and took his second win of the year, an amazing feat for the private LCR Honda team.

BMW Vision Next 100

BMW has revealed the final concept vehicle to mark its centenary year; a motorcycle. One of the innovative features of the BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100, is that it can’t fall over. The zero emissions bike is intended to preview how two-wheeled transportation might look in the next 30 or so years. Unlike a conventional motorbike, the Vision Next 100 doesn’t use suspension (damping is taken care of by the tyres), but instead mounts the wheels and frame as one "Flexframe" unit. Move the handlebar, therefore, and it’s not the front wheel that turns, but the entire frame. In addition, there is a stabilisation system to ensure that it never topples over, although BMW doesn't explain how this works. However, BMW says it'll be more than a decade until such technology is available to buy.

Ride 32: The New Indian Scout Sixty OK. So, why Scout "Sixty"? Well, our cousins across the pond tend do things a little differently. For instance, 60 cubic inches equals 999cc´s...which just happens to be the engine size of the new(ish) Scout Sixty. The original was launched in the 1920¨s. Yes, you read that correctly, the 1920´s!! When the company was reborn under the ownership of Polaris Industries (also owners of Victory motoycles) in 2013, they initially focused on larger capacity machines like the Chief. The first Scouts were 1133cc (69 cubic inches) and appeared in 2014, but savvy bosses at Polaris Industies had an eye on a younger customer, hence the smaller "entry level" Scout Sixty was released in 2015 at Milan. As well as a smaller engine (in order to avoid the high insurance premiums for younger riders on anything over 1000cc in the good ole US of A!), the Scout 60 has a more hipster coolness about it, popular at the moment with "the Kids" ("shed-built" and "Yard-built" being two other terms coined by the new wave of young (youngER at least) customisers/builders). It´s got far less shiny bits ("chrome won´t get you home Bro!!"), with a black frame and black ´crinkle effect´ engine finish, black single seat (not brown like it´s larger sibling!) and a redesigned clock; it´s certainly a handsome motorcycle. After slinging a leg over it, my first thought was "I didn´t need to do that!". A seat height of only 642mm means this baby sits low, as in LOOOWW!!!! Anyone who isn´t a Munchkin will have no problem putting both feet flat on the ground. Glance down and you´re met by...well not much really! The bars have a clean, purposeful functionality about them thanks to the lack of switches/buttons and the single clock mounted centrally. This is not a criticism, the absence of any superfluous controls suits the bike´s look, target audience and makes a welcome change from the plethora of options/instruments on a lot of other modern machinery! The speedo is clear and easy to read, but the other options available on the multi-function clock (gear indicator, trips, revs etc) are not so user friendly. I suppose this could improve with familiarity, perhaps it´s my age but to me the numbers were small and unclear (apart from the speedo). The general finish and attention to detail explains the Scout´s price tag. The thick paint, lustrous chrome (what there is!) and quality fasteners mean the whole "Fit" is that of a much pricier machine! So it´s perfect then? Well, no! The seat feels

comfortable and well padded and I don´t think you´d have to worry about pain in the old gluts before you stop for fuel. Partly because at 12.5 litres, you´re gonna HAVE to stop about every 200 clicks anyway!! Also, when you DO stop, you´ll have to spend 5 minutes trying to hook the stand out with your foot! With pegs SO far forward, WHY is the stand almost next to the rear bleedin wheel?? But that engine?? Wow!! Overtakes are a mere twist away in ANY gear from fairly low Revs. Which is just as well, cos the 5 speed box is the real "fly" in the Scout 60 "soup". It bears no resemblance to the modern, slick smooth turbine-like motor. It reminds me of a 1970´s Harley Sportster gear box..clunky, agricultural...it´s particularly annoying changing from 1st to 2nd, it almost feels like you have to change into neutral then change again up into 2nd!!! And yet, conversely, when stopped neutral runs off and hides behind 2nd!! A single twin piston caliper with ABS deals with those "Oh s*"!"!!! " moments and although it works perfectly, personally I felt no advantage over the similar (minus ABS) set up the Barge that is my Harley Heritage Softail!! But, granted the conditions were perfect and it was a very unscientific "test" comparison. Initially, I really liked the Scout 60, it´s looks, handling etc all appealed to the "YOOF" in me trying to get out, Lol! Even the ´edginess´ of the tyres didn´t put me off, but THAT gear box?? By comparison even the Harley Barge is like Captain Slick having an attack of Slickness on national Slick Day!! Maybe it was me?? Maybe the test bike was abused? Maybe the ´Box needed fresh/more oil? If this "glitch" can be sorted, then the Scout 60 is a crackin bike with a stonking engine, a kinda modern-day "Street-Sleeper". You know? The kind of bike you ´surprise´guys on sportier looking stuff on at the "traffic-light GP"! Lol!! With 5 years guarantee and a price of 11´590€, you certainly get a lot of small bike or your money. RallyRACC Catalunya - Rally de España Volkswagen's Sebastien Ogier sealed his fourth WRC Drivers' title with victory on RallyRACC Catalunya - Rally de España 13 - 16 October 2016. It was Ogier's fifth victory of the season and means he now emulates Tommi Makinen and Juha Kankkunen, the only other men to have also won the WRC Drivers' title four times, although he still has some way to go to match nine-time winner Sebastien Loeb.

FRIDAY

Hyundai team-mates Thierry Neuville and the up-coming star Hayden Paddon came in third and fourth, split by only 12.8secs. Whilst this years Hyundai i20 cars were amazingly fast & agile, when asked how different next years cars will be Hayden replied " the cars are lighter, about 15% faster and they sound a lot better. Because of the advancement in technology we can now extract more power from a 1.6 engine". An incredible 380bhp!! Neuville now moves up to second in the Drivers' Championship, equal on points with Andreas Mikkelsen, who failed to finish after spectacularly crashing out on Saturday in Stage 12. Sunday saw a spectacular pass of the historic rally cars much to the delight of the crowds.

Ogier took the lead on Friday's opening loop, although heavy rain made the going extremely tricky. In the afternoon, however, Ogier then slipped back to second, with local star Dani Sordo making the most of his better road position to surge into the lead, ending the leg with a 17 second cushion.

SATURDAY On day two, Ogier hunted down the Hyundai pilot, halving his advantage in the morning, and finally re-taking top spot with his fifth stage win in succession in the penultimate test.

The World Rally Championship now heads to Wales next for Rally GB, the penultimate round of the season, running from October 28-30.

SUNDAY Heading into the final day, Ogier had a 5.8sec advantage, which he increased to 12.7secs after Stages 16 and 17. Ogier was then second best in Stage 18 and he pushed to the end and was second fastest in the final test. Meanwhile, Sordo had to settle for the runners-up spot, 15.6secs back and unable to realise his hope of becoming the first Spaniard to win at home since Carlos Sainz back in 1995. “Really disappointed but I need to offer Seb my congratulations. I did my best, and I want to thank my fans for their support. I did my maximum,” Sordo noted.
