Cars Snapped Whilst Cruising in Northern Latitudes Pt 2 by Jill Carter

For the second part of my article I have included a variety of eclectic vehicles spied whilst visiting ports during cruises. It is quite exciting to wonder which vehicle will be the next in the viewfinder and makes a welcome break from churches and museums.

Tallinn, Estonia An electric-motored bicycle taxi is a popular way to see the sights. They can take three adults at a speed of up to 25 km per hour. This is not the cheapest way to travel but at 30 Euros for thirty minutes can be fun especially, when shared with friends. Cruise ship Aurora anchored north of Longybearn on Svalbard, Norway (Spitsbergen to the British) .

Copenhagen, Denmark The Citroen HY, was much loved by French tradesmen for many years and here on the quay in Copenhagen one is busy trading drinks and snacks. The Citroen HY was the most advanced commercial vehicle of the day when production commenced in 1949. The last one rolled off the production line in 1981 after a staggering 470,000 plus vans had been built. It was the first mass produced van to utilise monocoque construction where the body and chassis were designed as an integrated unit. This gave the vehicle a strength and lightness way beyond their competitors.

The Segway PT is a two-wheeled, self-balancing battery powered electric vehicle invented by Dean Kamen and is produced by Segway Inc. of New Hampshire, USA. Segway PTs can reach a speed of 12.5 miles per hour (20.1 km/h). Here a group of visitors are touring the city 8

with a guide. Segways have many uses and have been utilised by law enforcement agencies, airport and tourism in the USA. Two police officers were trialling them in Dublin and found them most useful but doubted that the force would purchase any at a guess-estimate of 8,000 Euros per unit. The starting price in the UK is just over £5,000 but note they cannot be used in public areas. Tesla Model X. Tesla Model X Electric car-maker Tesla has launched it’s two-year overdue Model X, which has a bio-weapon defence system and double-hinged doors. The SUV can hold seven passengers and it's falcon wing doors open upwards and use sensors to help them clear obstacles, such as garage ceilings. The company suggests this will make it easier to put young children in car seats without hitting their heads on the roof. The biohazard button activates the air filtration system, which fills the cabin with "medical-grade air". An update expected within the next month should allow an autopilot function, enabling the cars to be driven handsfree on motorways. The Model X is priced at €128,000 and Tesla expects the 25,000 pre-orders will take between eight months and a year to fulfil. My friends at the time all said I was nuts when I swapped it for a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. I have to say, I much preferred the Chevy. Needless to say, I didn’t keep it long anyway.

I had a few American cars back then. A Ford Galaxie 500 with a 392ci V8, followed swiftly by a Ford Fairlane convertible with the same engine if I recall correctly. I remember wrecking a pair of tyres whilst attempting to out-accelerate someone from traffic lights in Nottingham. A fairly powerful V8 in a 2 ton car was just too much for the narrow cross-ply tyres it was fitted with. I just left the treads on the road. The Fairlane was great for cruising around Nottingham University with the Beach Boys blaring from the 8 track.

Going back to the Zodiacs – I had a spare engine which I shoehorned into a Thames 15 cwt van. I didn’t have the resources to shorten the prop shaft so I just moved the radiator forward. It worked reasonably well although it was (as you might expect) prone to over-heating. The most entertaining moment with it

though was when I had to carry out an emergency stop and the van just tipped onto its nose. A couple of paving slabs in the back stopped that happening again, but negated the extra pull from the straight 6.

I had a little fling with sports cars. I had a metallic green MGB GT which. I have to say, was a girl magnet. I can’t think why, I thought it was a nail. I enjoyed my two Triumph Spitfires, but could never get them weather proof. They were worse than the 105E.

I had some fun with a Mark 2 Escort. I put a 1600 Cortina engine in it. There was a snag though. The 1600 sump pan wouldn’t fit over the escort cross member. The escort sump fitted the engine, but one of the crank webs caught it so it sounded like a big-end had gone. I solved the problem in the end by a bit of panel beating on the escort sump and a tiny bit of grinding on the crank. You only noticed it now and again if you hit a big enough bump to compress the engine mounting rubbers. It went really well though. Ian Smith Final part next month.

Porsche Intermediate Shaft (IMS) I have a background as a mechanical engineer, which has given me a very annoying habit... I have to examine everything before I buy anything. As a first time buyer of a Porsche, I also had to examine everything. I spent probably 6 months / at least 2 hours a day on the Internet, before I felt like I was ready to buy a Porsche. I must admit that when I discovered that the Porsche M96 engine has 21 known errors, I began to get a bit nervous about buying one.

Anyway ... I bought my 986, with all this information in my mind. There are 5-7 aftermarket IMS bearings, each with a unique solution to the problem. For me it was logical that if the bearing fails due to inadequate lubrication, you need to make sure there is enough lubrication at all times. The solution I chose requires modification of the IMS shaft. After this update, the oil can flow directly from the oil pump to the IMS bearing. Instead of a ball bearing, the new one is an open roller bearing.

The worst error of all is the IMS bearing. This more or less has the same function as a timing belt in most cars. According to unofficial sources, around 21 to 25% of all Boxster, 996, 997 and Cayman (1997-2007) have had an engine change due IMS error.

It's a pretty big job; exhaust, starter, water, gearbox, flywheel etc. must all come out. Porsche will require 12 hours for this job + 6 more hours if it is an automatic. Modification of the IMS shaft / oil pump is 3 hours more. The cost of this will, of course, hold many back. That explains why there are so many Porsches with IMS errors.

What is the reason for this IMS error? Most of all it is a design mistake from Porsche, the IMS bearing is a sealed bearing with grease in it. Normally this is a sensible solution and should hold the entire engine lifetime, but because the bearings are in oil, when the vehicle is stopped, the grease in the bearing dissolves... It does not take much to figure out that without lubrication, the bearing will die ! There have been examples of IMS error down to 16,000km from new.

But for me, this has been a nice Porsche experience.. It is a pleasure every time I turned the key.. And I know EVERYTHING runs in lovely oil. The happy Porsche owner.

The Motorsport Month by Richard O'Rourke

2015 This month’s review stars at the finish with what can only be described as the best day’s motorsport ever. Super Sunday began with an early rise to see the Moto GP round from Malaysia where Pedrosa and Lorenzo finished 1-2 but the real action was taking place behind them with Rossi and Marquez taking their war of words onto the track. At the pre-race press conference Rossi had accused Marquez of helping Lorenzo by holding him up in the Japanese race and so the scene was set for battle royal. Sure enough the two of them scrapped it out over the opening eight laps, swapping places many times and in the process allowing the front two to open a gap. The frustration eventually got to Rossi and, in a blatant move, pulled alongside Marquez, looked at him and knocked him to the ground. The most loved and admired racer of all time had done the dirty deed in front of millions of TV viewers and would surely be disqualified from the race. But no, the race organisers decided that his punishment should be to start last on the grid in the final race in Valencia. Can’t wait for that….and Marquez’s retaliation! The gap between Rossi and Lorenzo is now only seven points and while Jorge may now be favourite to win the championship we all know that anything can happen in a race. Roll on Valencia. Dani Pedrosa

A few hours later and on goes the TV again to see the live WRC Power Stage from Rally Cataluna. Of course the championship is done and dusted so no drama there but the rally itself provided a sting in the tail. Going into the final stage Ogier led by a mile with Latvala and Mikkelsen fighting over second place. The Norwegian put in a stunning drive to jump ahead of the Finn and while he was being interviewed at the finish news came through, via our TV screens, that Ogier had crashed heavily thus handing his first WRC win to Mikkelsen. The battle for second place in the manufacturers championship between Citroen and Hyundai goes to the final round in Wales next month.

Earlier in the month the WRC Tour De Corse rally was nearly washed out by storm damage, the normally treacherous roads made even more so by the rains. Ogier’s VW broke down and Latvala won ahead of Mikkelsen and Meeke. Luke Mustoo Competes in ‘Soy Piloto’

Luke and his team are a few weeks away from their decisive final meeting of the 2015 TimeAttack Series at Guadix circuit in Granada where the championship will be decided. With Luke being placed joint second the team are hoping be on top form to finish as high as possible in this, their first season back in the championship. Luke has also been keeping busy between TimeAttack meetings and has recently passed on to the final phase of the Soy Piloto competition, which has taken place throughout Spain. With 4 different sections taking place in Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid & Asturias, it offers the chance to race in the Spanish Clio Cup championship. Luke travelled to Madrid last month to take part in the initial phase of the competition and although the weather was against him (he competed in the wet against times set the previous day in the dry), he achieved the third best time overall ahead of many other competitors dry times. This has earnt him a place in the final phase in Madrid, which takes place as we go to print.

A couple of months ago we told you about two rare Ferraris that were donated to the Royal National Lifeboat The RNLI is the Institution by businessman Richard charity that saves Colton in his will. The auction took lives at sea place last month and the 1960 red Ferrari 250 GT SWB sold for £6.6m, while the silver 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 sold for £1.93m. Mr Colton hoped to raise enough money to fund a new lifeboat to be named after him and his late wife Caroline. Described as "a shy and private man", he was said to be nervous of the sea. The Ferrari 250 GT SWB has been described by experts as "one of the most beautiful cars in the world" as well as one of the most valuable, this example was one of 10 supplied to the UK. Mr Colton had restored both the Ferraris and had driven them across Europe. The RNLI's chief executive, Paul Bossier said: "We are overwhelmed by the sale price of the two Ferraris, a legacy so generously gifted to our charity by car enthusiast Richard Colton. We will use some of the money to funding a new Shannon class lifeboat which will be named ‘Richard and Caroline Colton’."

Ride 26: Pueblo de Don Fadrique It would be difficult to think of another place that whilst contrasting hugely with our bit of Spain here on the coast, is easier to both find and get to. Usually our routes to anywhere involve convoluted lists of minor roads, being bikers we prefer the 'bendy bits' Lol! This place though, is found via Autovias as far as Caravaca and then one long straight road (the A 330) right into the centre of the town. It's approx. 180 Kilometres from the coast and takes about 2-3 hours, depending on your driving and whether you stop en-route for a break etc. Unlike the M6, M25 et al, the road passes through some fantastic countryside and is quite a pleasant drive. Pueblo de Don Fadrique has been described as "one of Andalucia's prettiest villages". I'm not sure about that personally, but it is a an attractive and interesting place. 1164 metres above sea level on the 'Altiplano' of Granada. It is only 185 kilometres from the city and sits beneath the Sagra Mountains that serve as it's backdrop.

The major feature (as with the majority of small Spanish towns!) is the church. La Iglesia Parrochial Santa Maria de la Quinta Angusta, constructed in the 16th century. It's Renaissance architecture is complemented by later works carried out in the Gothic style. The smaller church of San Antonio Abud was built in 1568, and the town also boasts an Arabic Mosque! Another place of interest is the Casa de Senorial de los Patino from the 16th century, with it's coat of arms on the entrance doors leading to a wooden galleried patio and suits of armour on display. Be careful not to confuse this with the "Casa Senorial", a much later construction that belonged to the Fontes family of Murcia. In Calle Cinto Alto you can find the Gregorio Marin Foundation Museum. Established by the artist's daughter it consists of two village houses renovated and joined together to provide 3 floors of paintings, sculptures and ceramics. In case that's not enough, Spain's largest (Europe's second!!) Nature Park is right on the doorstep! Home to boar, fox, mountain cats, wild goats, eagles and vultures!! Directions: South towards Cartagena on the AP7, exit at Salida 782 for Balsicas/Murcia join the MU30 heading for Murcia. Exit at Salida 151 for Alcantarilla and follow signs for Caravaca on the C415/C330. When the autovia ends continue on the same road (now the A330) which takes you right into the centre of Pueblo de Don Fadrique. Stay safe, El Guiri

This area was originally 'frontier' country, seeing numerous battles between the Moors and Christians over the centuries. In 1513 Don Fadrique de Alvarez of Toledo was handed control of the town and he repopulated it with Christians from Murcia and Castilla. In the 17th century the pueblo thrived as a major wine and timber producer, winning it's independence from larger Huescar in the process. Population fell during Industrialisation, from a high of almost 9000 to it's present level of 2500 inhabitants.

Country Cruise to La Torreta Fabulous blue sky and brilliant sunshine greeted the members of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain for their latest event on the 18th October 2015. A Country Lunch at a little known, but excellent restaurant called La Torreta located half way between Sax and Elda about 30 Km. inland from Alicante. Most of the cars congregated at the Repsol Gas Station in Sax before going on to the restaurant just a couple of kilometres away. May I take this opportunity to thank all the members that attended especially the new members and to thank Ian McMenemy our Events Director for putting together such a brilliant day. We finished up with 22 beautiful Jaguars, every single one of them looked fabulous and it would be impossible to pick one’s out as exceptional. This superb selection of Jaguars almost filled the car park of the little country eating house. As for Members and Friends, we had a great turnout with 54 people. This very nearly filled the restaurant. I have to compliment Simona and her girls from La Torreta for providing not only fabulous food but brilliant service to 54 hungry and rather noisy automotive enthusiasts.

Restaurant La Torreta went to exceptional efforts to make this event a success. The food was fabulous and for a price that was phenomenal value for money. We started with a plate of sliced fried cheese on a bed of thinly sliced tomato drizzled in olive oil, and a basket of fabulous fresh baguette slices, followed by deep fried Boquerón’s (small fishes), then Sepia a la plancha, the tenderest griddled squid you have ever tasted. A choice of main course was offered, slow cooked shoulder of lamb, entrecote steak, sea bass with cava sauce, grilled hake, or for a small supplement either a fillet (solomillo) steak (the best you will get anywhere) or a Chuleton Steak (T Bone) a huge piece of prime beef. A selection of deserts were then offered as well as good strong coffee. Wines consisted of El Coto 2008 for the red or for a small supplement, the gold award winning Tarima Hill, Olite for the rose and a very pleasing little Riesling for the white or for those who wanted it, endless beer. All this for 24 Euros which offered our members exceptional value for money. This is the third time that JEC Spain has visited La Torreta, I am sure it will not be the last.
