Scandal is the word this month as VW have been found to be cheating at US emission tests, it’s rocked the automotive industry with up to 11 million cars implicated worldwide. We watch with interest as the story develops. We had already selected our cover car before the story broke and how ironic that our Top Ten we started last month is “Most Popular European Cars in the US” with 4 of the 10 VW’s, it will be telling to see how this changes over the next few years. September saw a couple of big events; first there was the Frankfurt Motor Show, with all the glitz that goes with the prestige event. Secondly, the Goodwood Revival took a step back in time as the retro festival attracted the cream of the iconic classic cars from the last 80 years. We have a new Car Story from this month, this time it’s the turn of Ian Smith, a local man who has owned a lot of cars despite prefering motorbikes! Jill Carter shares her photos of vehicles she has seen on her travels and Richard O’Rourke does a fantastic job of rounding up the month’s motorsport news in his report. Volkswagen presented the newly developed VW Tiguan at the 2015 IAA Frankfurt Motorshow. In this case, when we say new we mean completely new. The second generation Tiguan is the first VW Group SUV whose design is based on the MQB platform. This will mark the beginning of the SUV's to come over the upcoming years.

The annual Revival took place at Goodwood last month and it was another fun filled weekend, with many of the visitors dressing in outfits from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s

Races took place all weekend with an array of marques driving flat out trying to take the win, despite the enormous value of the majority of the cars competing.

McLaren celebrated 50 years with a lap of honour. Lord March led the tribute to the man behind the marque ‘Bruce McLaren was a talented engineer and a world class racing driver, he was highly-skilled, meticulous and always fun.’

11 Spitfires and a Hurricane flew in the skies above the Goodwood Motor Circuit finishing off a poignant commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Cars Snapped Whilst Cruising in Northern Latitudes by Jill Carter

I have included here photographs of interesting cars encountered whilst visiting ports during cruises. It is quite exciting to wonder which vehicle will be the next in the viewfinder and makes a welcome break from churches and museums. I did encounter some strange looks and comments when ignoring a Russian Orthodox Church to catch a snap of a Volga and in the process politely asking a tourist group to move!

Tallinn, Estonia This beautifully restored Mercedes was rescued from the breakers yard by an enthusiast from Helsinki who has lived in Tallinn for ten years. This model, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray spied from Mercedes-Benz W121 was introduced in the cabin balcony in the Stockholm rush 1956 and was powered by a 1.9 litre. It hour traffic. This iconic American car remained in production until 1961. was first introduced in 1953 and morphed through various type changes to the present day. Mercedes Concept IAA. Headling the Mercedes stand at Frankfurt was this Concept IAA ‘Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile’. It's an S-Class-sized fourdoor coupe, which automatically grows 390mm in length when you pass 50mph and it's drag coefficient, you may ask?? 0.19Cd. That's extremely low (I'm told). The front bumper has panels that extend 25mm forward into the airflow, while a valance protrudes an extra 20mm out of the back. The front bumper also retreats 60mm underneath the car, and even the wheels seal up to cut drag. Like the McLaren P1 the lights and exhaust are hidden inside the bodywork.

Clocking Off. A revolutionary device that scans engines via ultrasound to give accurate mileage readings could stop car clocking for good. The Tacho-Spion, or Speedo-Spy detects whether the car's mileage has been tampered with. The technology has been in development for 10 years and is already being used in Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Poland, Austria and the US. Speedo-Spy checks the wear and tear of the engine via an ultrasound scan and gives a result, with five to 10 per cent accuracy, in minutes utes. It will help meet EU regulations since a digital record of a car’s history held on a national database is required under EU legislation by 2017. It’s estimated that a third of cars in the EU have inaccurate mileage.

007 Villain In A Jaguar. Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled the stunt vehicles it provided for the new James Bond movie Spectre, ahead of the films release this month. Naomie Harris (who plays Moneypenny) and Dave Bautista (the villain Mr Hinx) were guests of honour at the event, which was held in Frankfurt to coincide with the city’s motor show. Spectre features a high-speed, moonlit car chase through the streets of Rome, where Hinx pursues Bond’s Aston Martin DB10 in a Jaguar C-X75. This hybrid supercar was developed in collaboration with the Williams Formula One team and features a petrol-electric drivetrain producing more than 850bhp. The C-X75 won’t make it to production, so you’ll just have to enjoy it in the film. The other vehicles on display in Frankfurt were the Range Rover Sport SVR and Land Rover Defender Bigfoot, both of which star in a mountain chase and were developed by Jaguar Land Rover's in-house Special Operations division.

Chris Evans Sale. Remember last month we said that TV Personality Chris Evans was putting 13 of his cars up for auction? Well, he only sold half of them at the Goodwood Revival Sale. Unsold were his Ferrari 275 GTB/C valued at £2.6 million, a £2.3 million Ferrari 365 Daytona Spyder and a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, valued at £1.4 million. His Chitty Chitty Bang Bang replica didn’t sell, but his Ferrari 250 SWB Recreation was the most expensive model to sell at £606,000. He raised more than £50,000 for Children In Need by selling off automobilia.

Ian is a bike man at heart but has a fascinating car history ... Part 1 When I was asked to write this article, I knew that I was going to have some trouble remembering the cars in whose log-book my name has featured. This is mainly because of the sheer number of them, but my diminishing ability to recollect almost anything is also probably a factor. This in itself is somewhat paradoxical because during the period in my life that I owned the greatest number of cars, I had no real interest in them other than playing with the mechanical bits and doing a bit of buying and selling to finance my true love, which was motorbikes.

Meanwhile, the Mini Traveller sat, unattended and unwanted on my drive for about 2 years. Then a friend said that his aunt was looking for a car and he’d told her about the Traveller. I arranged for her to come and take a look. When she arrived, I’d charged the battery and it started beautifully. So I drove it off the drive and she started to look round it. Everything was going well until she opened the passenger door which promptly fell into the road along with the quarter panel it was fixed to. I’m an easy-going type so I didn’t feel overly insulted when she didn’t buy it.

I was politely warned off waxing lyrical about my bikes, since the article is for a car magazine, so I’ll just say that my everyday transport at the time of the acquisition of my first car was a 650cc B.S.A. Road Rocket. An elderly uncle suddenly headed for that garage in the sky and left his brother (my Dad) a 1949 Ford Prefect E93A. My Dad was also a biker and he didn’t have a driving licence for a car so I sort of inherited it. Not exactly a teenager’s dream vehicle, but handy for work when it was raining. I’m afraid that actual time periods are a bit blurry in my ageing memory banks, but I remember that I swapped the Prefect for an E105 Anglia in powder blue and white. That too triggers memories of a constantly wet right foot as the rain that leaked through the windscreen found its way to the accelerator pedal.

The Anglia made way for a little series of minivans and a mini traveller in red with wood. I also swapped a B.S.A. B31 350cc single for an Austin 1100 which I dumped after removing the engine. That engine then found its way into one of the minivans which subsequently, because of its smaller wheels, would only do about 65mph flat out, but it would do it up a wall if I wanted. It would out-accelerate most sports cars of the day if only for a few hundred yards. I remember a special mod that I carried out on one of the minivans. The electric fuel pump used to stall when the points got pitted so every so often it would grind to a halt and I had to go and rattle the pump which was mounted in the rear sub-frame. In the end I drilled a small hole in the floor above the pump. Then I tied some string around the pump, passed it up through the hole in the floor and ran it up to the handbrake lever. Then, when the van started stuttering, I just yanked the string a few times and away she would go. Shame I never patented that idea.

I had a real love affair with Mark 3 Zodiacs for a while and owned several of them; my favourite being a white estate version which I seem to remember was fitted out by a company called Farnham. Prior to that though I had a Mark 2 Zephyr 6 which I’d been given by a guy who’s Triumph Tiger 110 I’d rebuilt for him. The car was OK, but the most interesting thing about it was that I sold it for a sum of £75 - £25 in cash and £50 in Greenshield Stamps. I can’t remember what I got with the stamps. I was heavily into Drag Racing at that time and used to go down to Santa Pod Raceway whenever there was an event. Mainly to watch the bikers, like Alf Hagan who held the track record for years with his J.A.P. powered drag bike. I can’t quite remember the details of the deal, but I went halves with a friend to buy a “competition altered” dragster called “Hallucination”. It was based on a 1940s Ford Anglia with a Rover 60 back axle and a 3.8 Jaguar engine stuck on the front. The twin exhaust headers that stuck straight up in the air from the manifold made it look a bit tractor-ish. We made a push bar (it didn’t have a starter motor) in the shape of a big key so it looked like we were winding it up when we unscrewed it before each race. We never had the resources for it to be more than just fun and sadly it was eventually burnt out by vandals whilst parked on the trailer, but I’m proud to say that it inspired my son in later years to built a beautiful Rover V8 powered “Pop” dragster which he called Hallucination 2. He’s now running a 1957 Chevy Bel Air called Snow White into which he’s just putting a 900hp big block full race engine. Set up to use Nitrous Oxide, it will probably make 1300hp. Still street legal, it ought to run 8 second quarter miles. Ian Smith Part 2 next month.

2015 restarted, changed to wets and then back to dries and still finished third. Rossi grabbed a few valuable points with fifth place while Lorenzo crashed out giving the Italian a 25 point lead in the championship. Aragon in Spain was next and on a dry, warm track Marquez was on pole but Lorenzo got the jump on him at the start and drove to a comfortable victory. Marquez crashed in his pursuit leaving Dani Pedrosa and Rossi to fight it out for the minor positions. They changed places many times with Dani eventually prevailing leaving Rossi with a 14 point lead with four rounds to go. I bet it will go down to the wire and the decider in Valencia in November.

It has been an eventful month, particularly in F1 and MotoGP whilst elsewhere, VW, despite their other troubles, march on to take the WRC title. Formula 1 Lewis Hamilton took a comprehensive win in Italy ahead of crowd favourites Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa while Rosberg fell foul of an unreliable development engine in practice and then in the race his replacement old engine packed up with two laps to go. Raikkonen promised much with a front row grid position but then threw it all away when he stalled on the line. All the talk, though, was about tyre pressures when it was found that the Mercs were running pressures that were too low giving them an advantage but the stewards chose to take no further action despite drivers in GP2 being disqualified for the same offence! The rules regarding how, when and where the readings are to be taken in future were subsequently tightened up so hopefully that will be an end to that. On then to Singapore where the Mercedes team were at a loss to explain the lack of pace (tyre pressures?) while the Ferraris were flying as were the Red Bulls. Vettel won with Ricciardo second and Raikkonen third. Rosberg closed the gap to Hamilton with 4th place while Lewis retired with engine woes. Two safety cars ensured an exciting race under the lights but could this be the start of a Ferrari revival and a challenge for the title? Ehh, no!

Aragon MotoGP The British GP at Silverstone was wet, very wet, and as a result lots of people fell off their bikes, but not the old master Valentino Rossi, who splashed his way around and won with Danilo Petrucci and Andrea Dovozioso joining him on the podium, both Ducati mounted. Lorenzo kept in touch with 4th place while Cal Cruchlow was most unlucky when heading for a podium in his home GP only to be knocked off by his team mate Jack Millar. Misano in Italy was next and the scene of another wet race but this time on a drying track with showers. Yamaha made the most unbelievable pit strategy calls and handed the race to Marc Marquez with Brits, Bradley Smith and Scott Redding joining him on the podium. Such was the harum scarum nature of the race that Smith rode the entire distance on dry tyres while Redding started on dries, crashed,

Japan saw a return to form for Mercedes who explained the poor showing in Singapore as simply a wrong direction in set-up for an unusual track (have they never been there before?) and so Hamilton and Rosberg finished 1-2 ahead of Vettel. 48 points now the gap between Lewis and Nico so that’s that methinks. All the talk in Japan was negative. No hospitality unit for cash strapped Lotus who had to go cap in hand to the others for a cuppa, no 2016 engine for Red Bull who have fallen out with Renault, Mercedes and, now, Ferrari because of their arrogant attitude and threats to quit and no news from Jenson Button as whether or not he will drive the woeful McLaren Honda next year or get a proper job on the telly presenting Top Gear. Alonso too is making The Podium in Singapore noises about leaving and with sponsors Sebastian Vettel dropping like flies, the once mighty Driver Standings McLaren could find themselves with no 1: Lewis Hamilton 277 drivers, no money and a slow, unreliable 2: Nico Rosberg 229 car. Hard to imagine but, hey folks, that’s 3: Sebastian Vettel 218 F1.

Sebastian Ogier & the VW Team WRC The VW steamroller trundled on in Oz and once again it was Sebastian Ogier who won with team mate Latvala in the runner up spot. Kris Meeke brought his Citroen home in third place but is still waiting for news as to whether he will be retained in the team for 2016. The drivers and team titles are now sewn up but a question mark must now hang over their participation in the future considering the fall out from the emissions scandal which has befallen the parent company. QUIZ QUESTION. Which specific car component is common to all cars from the family hatchback to supercars and even F1 and World Rally machines. Clue. It costs less than a tenner! Answer next month.

Luke Mustoo victorious in Monteblanco !

Luke and his team unfortunately couldn't take part in the third meeting of the TimeAttack championship due to repairs & upgrades that were being carried out on their Clio 197. The upgrades included a new ceramic clutch kit, lightweight flywheel and larger 330mm front brake discs. These upgrades are hoping to get the team closer to the competition. In the fourth meeting at the Monteblanco circuit in Huelva these upgrades proved to have worked, Luke managed to finish first in Pro B, which gave the team 25 points towards the championship. Now placed joint second in the championship, with only one meeting left at the Guadix circuit taking place on the 8th of November, the fight for the championship is going to be fierce with the top three separated by only 2 points.

A holiday in Barcelona last month included a check on the progress of Ferrari Land, Spain. The area is fenced off next to the Port Aventura park and there is work taking place. There’s nothing to see above ground level yet, but the owners are sure it’ll be open for next year’s season.

September Ace Café There was good news and bad news for the Phoenix Car Club this month. Only one month short of celebrating 5 continuous years of our monthly Ace Cafe meetings at Hotel La Torre we were washed out when record rain falls (75lt/mt) fell overnight. A few brave souls turned up for a coffee and a chat but the classics remained warm and dry at home. Four days later it was an entirely different weather picture and 53 members celebrated the Club's 8th Birthday with a dinner and dance at Meson El Prado in San Miguel de Salinas. Membership has steadily grown to over 100 members and the club has thrived over the past 8 years with monthly drives, 3 or 4 day excursions further afield and social activities as well as supporting local charities. Bike News A rare example of the 'world's first superbike', which was hidden for 30 years, is set to sell for £40,000. The owner of the 1953 Vincent Black Shadow removed its mudguards and wheels to fit it into a tiny utility cupboard, where it nestled among old paint pots, phone directories and a vinyl record collection. Bob Boardman, a railwayman from Liverpool, bought the second-hand bike for £125 in 1965. It was last ridden in 1969 and has done just 22,000 miles. When it was made, the hand-built Black Shadow was the fastest bike of its day with a top speed of 125mph. Experts say the bike could fetch £40,000 when it goes under the hammer at H and H Classics auctioneers this month.

Ride 25: Letur The small village of Letur is situated in the communidad de Castilla de la Mancha just north east of Moratalla, but falls within the municipality of Albacete. The place is almost unknown outside of Spain, indeed the vast majority of Spaniards have not heard of it!. Somewhat perversely, with a population of just over 1200, the place relies hugely on tourism for it's survival! A huge number of the houses there are 'casas rurales' ie holiday homes rented out to families/groups but the local inhabitants can still be found milling about or relaxing in the main square on the benches. The square is dominated by the church "Iglasia de la Asuncion de Santa Maria", whilst the Town Hall building and the "Museo de region" take up two of the other sides. There are also some steps that lead up to a bar/restaurant, it's worth making the trek up there as off to one small corner of the bar hidden behind drapes and tables are doors that open up into a Theatre, complete with balconies, stage etc etc. It's totally unexpected and sends a thrill through everyone I've ever taken there! The Mirador is another point of interest and offers unbelievable views of the valley that sits below and 'behind' the township. Here you can find the Mirador Restauante, where those looking for a more substantial meal won't be disappointed. Not exactly cheap compared to other eateries in Letur, the food is very good and the excellent vistas from the ceiling to floor windows more than warrant the slightly higher premium. The whole place is jam packed with amazingly interesting little 'corners' so here are just some of them.

British manufacturer Norton Motorcycles has announced plans to release a 200HP 1200cc V4-powered superbike. The spec includes full carbon body work, aluminium main frame made from aerospace aluminium and carbon wheels. Norton's Head of Design, Simon Skinner targets Ducati's, V-twin powered 1299 Panigale as the principal competitor for their base-level 200HP machine and a "really high-end one" designed to challenge the £54,000 Ducati Superleggera, with a similar price point. Skinner sang the praises of British based car manufacturers "The UK turns out some fantastic design and engineering projects at the moment, The McLaren P1, Aston 177, and of course all F1 cars. At the minute we need to think Ducati, think Ferrari; think Norton, think Aston Martin."

What many visitors believe to be part of the Town's protective 'walls' is in fact what remains of the ancient aquaduct. Adjacent are the open air 'piscinas' that are fed by the cascada (waterfall to you and me!) that in turn takes it's water from nearby natural springs or 'Fuentes'. But honestly, it's difficult to do the village justice. My advice would be to make a day of your visit, taking your time to wander the narrow, medieval streets discovering its secret delights as you go. The route: We set off from San Pedro making our way past Sucina and Santomera before stopping at Hotel Los Perriquitos for drinks etc. From there it was into Fortuna and then hang a left at the lights onto the MU 411 towards Archena, picking up the A30 autovia north in the direction of Hellin. At Salida 342 we left the dual carriageway for the C3314 to Calasparra and our second rest stop. Then the MU 510, C3211 and CM 3217 (all actually the one and same road!?) through Socovos and on to Letur for lunch and exploring. Our group split up in the village, some taking a 'guided tour' with Rob whilst others opted to explore on the own. If you do go with someone who knows the town it's probably better though because it's easy to miss some of the 'sights' (as some of our group found after we re-grouped later!). By now, time was beginning to be an issue and so we 'looped' back via a couple of unbelievably scenic roads (thanks Rob!) but that's a story for another day!! If you want a taste of 'Old Spain', go to Letur, you'll want to visit again; it's that kind of place that draws you back! Stay safe, El Guiri

The Magic of the Dyno - Part II Following up on Part I, this time I will explain a little more about the car dyno and what we use them for. But first I have to state we DO NOT make customers cars. 95% of our dyno work on cars is test and development of software / hardware for dyno. The remaining 5% is just fun, with our own cars. But if there is interest from car clubs and large groups we would like to open the door for a demo day. Our test and development departments: Car's is in Valencia (AWD dyno) and MC is in Dolores, Alicante. We primary develop tool and software for dyno's. Therefore our own dyno is equipped with everything, load control, gas analysis EGT, OBD, etc. Which makes our development departments some of the best in the world. Dyno work is not only tuning, but also troubleshooting. So to take full advantage of our hardware, we use a lot of data to optimize and troubleshoot.

Which brings the car to the Rpm / Load we want. Which of course is Alfa - Omega in all tuning work. The advantage is that we can work at high speed under control conditions, without putting our driving licence and others peoples lives in danger. At the same time collecting data as normal is impossible to get. The second set of sensors we use can be Lambda probe or more normal workshop test equipment which is physically too large to carry in the car.

The first thing we do is to access the car's live data stream. Through the OBD II port, which most workshops use to read error codes. We go a step further and use data such as water temperature, turbo pressure, TPS etc. And use our load control (BIG electric brakes) to create road conditions.
