The new Fiat 124 Spider brings its classic styling and typically Italian performance to a new generation. F-Pace Sets The Pace. Jaguar’s new F-Pace SUV has become the fastest-selling car in the company’s 94-year history, fuelling expectations that parent company JLR may finally be able to break nearly a decade of over-reliance on sales of Land Rover cars. 30,000 models of the marque’s first ever SUV have been sold globally since mid-April where it went on sale in the UK before going on to be sold overseas. JLR is having to secure additional cars to satisfy customer demand, raising the prospect of a new production line having to be built at its Solihull factory if interest continues at the current pace. Jaguar To Enter Formula E. Staying with Jaguar, this will be the first year in Formula E that allows teams to design their own cars and drive system rather than use an off-the-shelf, shared format as seen in the first two years of the all-electric series. Jaguar is signing up and has formally debuted its factory-backed I-type 1 race car. The racing team behind the car, is called Panasonic Jaguar Racing since Panasonic has signed on as a title electronics partner. Paris No-Show Motor Show. Ford, Rolls-Royce, Volvo and Aston Martin are among the companies skipping the Paris Motor Show, as the once-unmissable event succumbs to changes sweeping the auto industry. Instead of spending out millions of euros to attract consumers to crowded exhibition centers, automakers are reaching out to buyers where they like to spend time online using Instagram, blogs, etc. This year's edition will attract the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, BMW, VW and Jaguar.

The Rise and Fall and Rise Again of the Electric Vehicle Jill Carter
The honour of the invention of the electric powered motor car is contested between Thomas Davenport who invented the battery electric car in 1834 and Robert Anderson who used non-rechargable batteries between 1832 and 1839. Electric vehicles would continue to be developed and went on to hold all vehicle land speed records until about 1900. The first car race in America was won by an electric car in 1895. French racing driver Count Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat set the first recognized automobile land speed record in December 1898 in a Jeantaud electric powered car. His average speed was 39 mph (63.13 km/h), he increased this to 62 m.p.h. in April 1899. In this era of searching for alternative fuels it may come as a surprise to hear that in the early days of motoring, around 1890, electric cars outsold other propelled cars by ten to one! The first car dealerships established in America as early as 1896 were exclusively for the sale of electric vehicles and carried well known names such as Oldsmobile and Studebaker before they later changed to petroleum based fuels. Women drivers and passengers prefered electric vehicles as they were much cleaner and smoother in their ride, the first electric car bought by a woman was in 1896. In the early days of the motor vehicle it was not easy to forsee which of steam, electricity and petroleum propulsion would win through and become the market leader.
It was not until the late 1960's when environmental effects of petroleum emmisions upon air quality were widely published that a few car manufacturers once more turned to the possibilty of electric propeeled vehicles as a viable alternative. The need for an alternative to petroleum was highlighted by the OPEC oil embergo of 1973 which demonstrated how vulnerable countries would be if there was no oil available. The State of Califonia passed a Zero Emmision Vehicle Mandate in 1990 which prompted the manufacture of a limited number of electric vehicles that were in the main hand-built. Toyota was the last major manufacturer to market an electric vehicle in America in 2003. The electric race series, Formula E has been running for two years now and during this time the cars have used a McLaren-built 200kW electric motor with a race mode of 133kW and 67kW push to pass. The cars weigh a minimum of 800kg, of which 200kg is the batteries from Williams. This translates to a 0-60mph (0-97kmph) time of three seconds. The top speed is limited to 225kmph (140mph). Previous articles in Costa Car Trader this year have detailed the current position of the electric car market which is being led by Tesla who produce a luxury saloon capable of travelling over 300 miles before the battery requires a charge. Will electric driven cars be the choice of the future as well as of the past?
The breakthrough came around 1910 with the introduction of a motorised assembly line for production of petrol powered cars, which almost overnight made hand production too costly and thus almost obsolete. The infrastructure for electricity was patchy outside of cities and reduced the electric car to city use. The nail in the coffin was firmly knocked in with the introduction of an electric starter negating the need for a starter handle to crank the petrol propelled car. Cranking the engine had caused many injuries and could be a dirty activity. Back in the UK, after leaving school, Steve worked at a Vauxhall main dealer and while there, he attended college and obtained a BTEC and City & Guilds National qualification. Moving onto be an MOT tester, clutch fitter and all round mechanic, he obtained a BTEC Higher National certificate. Steve then took a job at a busy Ford main delaer and was regularly sent on training courses, including advanced engine management, fault finding, engine & gearbox repairs. In all he attended over 50 courses in his 11 years at Ford and is qualified with an IMI (Institute of Motor Industry), AAE (Advanced Automtive Engineer) and CAE (Certificate Autmotive Engineer, Level 3). Moving to Spain 10 years ago, Steve has worked both mobile and for some of the more established garages in the area. Steve has a superb reputation in La Marina and has now established one in Torrevieja working from his own fully equipped garage. We finally did it!! After 4 years stock building bringing everything in from the UK, we found our shop at the Rioja Commercial Centre, Villamartin. It took us six months to get the shop ready (Spanish paperwork!) and we opened on March 2nd. Our customers call us a ‘Proper English Car Spares Shop’ and that’s exactly what we are. THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2016 Formula One The Belgian GP at Spa took place at the tail end of August and was a thrilling race as usual, particularly as Lewis Hamilton climbed from last place to third, a result he could never have expected before the race. Hamilton had chosen to take grid penalties resulting from multiple power unit changes which put him right at the back of the grid. Vettel, Raikkonen and Verstappen clashed on lap one and ruled them out of contention but it was a huge 190mph accident involving the Renault of Magnussen that changed the whole complexion of the race. K Mag lost it on the uphill exit of Eau Rouge and the race was stopped while the barrier was replaced. All the cars were then allowed to change tyres and the greatest beneficiary was Hamilton who was now in a position to push hard to the end where he finished third behind Rosberg and Danny Ricciardo. The gap at the top of the championship race had closed but not by as much as might have been expected. The Start in Belgium
At the Italian GP in Monza Hamilton was on pole but made a terrible start, not for the first time this season, and finished the first lap in sixth place. Nico Rosberg, meanwhile, took advantage and roared off into the distance, never to be seen again. The Mercs had qualified on the super soft tyres and were set for a two stop race while the Red Bulls and Ferraris had started on ultras and would have to stop three times. This strategy allowed Hamilton to climb to second and beat Vettels Ferrari into third place. The home crowd were at least given something
to cheer and considering Ferrari’s poor form, was the best they could have expected. The championship gap was now down to 2 points with Hamilton holding a slender advantage over Rosberg. Italy
The Singapore GP was a cracker and it didn’t take long for things to kick off. Rosberg was on pole from Ricciardo and Hamilton but the action took place a little further back when, at the start, Hulkenberg was tagged by Sainz and slammed into the barrier. The safety car was out and when things settled down it was Rosberg who led from Ricciardo, Hamilton, Raikkonen and Alonso. Vettel started from the back after problems in qualifying but soon climbed to fifth and it was he who started a chain reaction with twelve laps to go by changing to softer tyres and setting very fast laps. Those in front saw the danger and also stopped, all except Rosberg. Mercedes knew that if they pitted Nico he would have lost the lead so they left him out on worn tyres and failing brakes and he drove brilliantly to fend off the closing Red Bull to take a fine victory by less than half a second and also took the lead in the standings by 8 points. Six races to go and all to play for.
Moto GP The Silverstone round of the Moto GP series was all about Cal Crutchlow, or so it seemed until Maverick Viñales and Suzuki spoiled the party and decided to have one of their own. Fresh from his maiden win in Brno, Crutchlow stuck it on pole in the wet in Silverstone and sent the home crowd potty. Unfortunately Suzuki didn’t read the script and gave Viñales a bike set-up that was perfectly suited to the drying track and rode a great race to take his first GP win and the first win for Suzuki in nine years. Crutchlow had some consolation in finishing second with Valentino Rossi third.

Aragon in our adopted home country hosted the next round and was expected to be a track most suited to the Hondas but once more Viñales on the Suzuki took an early lead. Not for long though and soon Marquez took over only to go off the track on lap 5 and was lucky not to dump it. He dropped to fifth and now had to start the fight back and with 10 laps to go the Honda re-took the lead this time with Rossi in second and Lorenzo third, Viñales having dropped to fourth. Jorge then passed Rossi and that’s how it ended giving the Spanish crowd a 1-2 and Marquez a 53 point championship lead with just four races left.

"The Dream of Laura" is the 4th Exhibition Solidarity and on Saturday you can watch a gymkhana put on by the Mini Club as well as concerts by local groups. Sunday is the event itself featuring one of the finest and largest concentrations of of classic cars, sportscars, motorcycles and trucks. This year's event is to help Laura, who is a 4 year old girl from Almoradi who suffers from a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). It is a pathologic that attacks the nerve cells that are in the spinal cord. Rehabilitation treatments and muscle stimulation are very expensive and the initiative of Virauto is to raise funds for her and her family. Sunday 18th September 2016, 28 beautiful Jaguars arrived at the Parador Hotel in Albacete. This collection included three cars that need special mention. Len and Barbara Pillings new Jaguar F Pace, Joel Darget’s replica D Type, something you do not see very often and Joel had brought it all the way from the Costa Del Sol. The third was David Sleap’s superb XKR Silverstone. On Monday the Big Cats had a police escort into Munera’s town square as guests of the Mayor. A big thank you to Leondro Lopez Valido for suggesting the idea and organising the whole thing. We were filmed for La Mancha television! We stopped for about a hour then made our way to Ruidera. Lagunas de Ruidera is part of Hidden Spain, a place very popular with those Spanish that know it exists but hardly ever visited by anyone else. The attraction is the string of beautiful lakes and waterfalls, one of the most important wetlands in Spain. Apart from the stunning scenery you can also take part in various water born activities. Back at the hotel that night, we had a menu arranged for the club, including the famous cheese made locally.

Nostalgia Progress. Constantly striving for perfection. Endless improvements to everything from potato peelers to PCs!! So, why is the lure of the past so strong? Many of us who now live in homes with en-suite facilities, can still recall the weekly "bath night". When a large metal tub would be filled with hot water and an orderly queue of family members awaited their turn! Not much fun if you´re number six eh?! LOL! We had no money, no game boys, no smart phones, no computers and more often than not had to share a bed with two or more siblings!! But were we happy? Of course we bloody weren´t! We simply knew no better, aspiration is the mother of disappointment! I often find myself cringing/wincing when I see someone wearing shorts and t-shirt on a motorcycle. But do we really need the all-singing, all-dancing Power Ranger stuff

most of us now wear nowadays? When I ride my bike , I´m wearing more protective gear than a 1980´s riot officer during the Miner´s Strike (granted, minus the shield!). I think back to the distant hazy days of my motorcycling "yoof"...denim jeans, leather jacket (Brando style!) from the local market, toe cap boots and a cheeky grin!! As for the helmets.."Centurion" anyone? At least "Bell" offered a modicum of protection...but who could afford to pay 20 Pounds for a helmet on an apprentice´s wage of 15 quid a week?! My "Board" was a tenner a week!! (Board!!? When did it become OK for offspring to stay at home till their 30´s RENT FREE!!!? Harummphh!!! LOL!) It got me wondering: were the roads softer back then? Or did we really bounce better!? hee hee hee... Surely, falling off at 40mph hurt just as much in 1976 as it does in 2016? Ahhhhhh..1976, now THAT was a summer...and only ten years after "we" had won the World Cup...jumpers for goalposts..Ahem!! Sorry! See? there I go again!! The truth is bikes ARE better with ABS/Traction Control etc. Fuel injection IS more efficient than Carbs (now that the initial "glitches" have been ironed out with development anyway!). So why then, do so many of us find it difficult to don glasses of a pinkish hue then?! Maybe it´s because we ourselves, feel a little "outdated", as we age..improved upon by newer models; after all "youth is wasted on the young!" eh? Or is it simply that we feel more comfortable back "there" amidst the familiar and technology that we truly understood (my TV remote has faaaaar more functions than my motorbicycle´s controls! WHY!!!?) As the average age of motorcyclists has increased, this tendency has become more prevalent. Manufacturers have become aware of the "Rush to Reminisce" and as a result, along with the "Techno Gizmos" (many of which are now legal requirements for Euro 4 legislation etc!), are attempting to give their new models "designed nostalgia"...BMW´s R 9T? Yamaha´s "Sport Heritage" or "Faster Sons"? Triumph? Well, take your pick...Indeed, some Marques have used this link to the past as a very effective marketing tool for decades! Do the letters H and D mean anything sir? The trouble with really old machines is..they breakdown, some of them frequently! One senior chap on an even more senior Ariel once said to me "You know you´re always going to get home on a modern bike, where´s the fun in that?!" I´m not sure about "fun", but in an age of "Adventure" bikes and a booming industry of "adventure motorcycling" holidays, maybe the old geezer was on to something? I mean, shouldn´t EVERY ride be an "adventure"?! Whether classics make you coo like a grandmother at a beautiful baby competition or more modern tackle "Rocks ya kazbah". The Motor Museum on the CV755 between Guadalest and Callosa Dén Serria is well worth a visit. A private collection, family run, entrance is a mere 4€ and there´s a fantastic little gift shop with all manner of models of motoring´s yesteryears. With a restaurant right next door, it makes a great morning´s outing and can be a welcome rest from castles, crowds and Kareoke!! Even the very young will find it interesting...EEEEE, kids?
