We watched the first Formula E race with much anticipation: What will the cars sound like? Will it be exciting? We thoroughly enjoyed it, the sound was likened to remote controlled cars and they all seemed evenly matched and we were surprised that most of them finished the race. Excitement? Major drama on the last lap! See our full report on page 17. Meanwhile in the F1 camp, Lewis is back on top after winning the last two races and with Nico suffering a retirement, the title race is closer than ever. This month we feature a true Spanish craftsman who makes model motorbikes and cars out of glass. His creations are stunning (although difficult to photograph..) who hope we have done his art justice. Local garage owner Tano shares his story of renovating his Seat 600 with us on page 12 and we look at another 5 Saabs. In last month’s issue we had a photo of the concept Sonett II rather than the production model, so apologies for any confusion and well done to our eagle-eyed reader and Saab expert Derek Fletcher. The modern classic is going to be relaunched as Audi introduces the latest generation of the TT and TTS. A new muscular and athletic presence with the front being dominated by horizontal lines offering a new take on the 1998 original TT. The CoupĂŠ is 4.18 meters (13.7 ft) long with a wheelbase of 2.51 meters (8.2 ft) and very short overhangs so it can stick to the road like glue. Beneath the body is a new evolution of the Audi Space Frame (ASF) based on the modular transverse matrix. The front end and the floor of the occupant cell include numerous components of hot formed steel. The exterior skin and all bolt on parts are made of aluminum and comes equipped with the 2.0 TFSI. The new TT initially will be available with a TDI or TFSI engine. The TTS will roll off the assembly line with the top of the line TFSI. Three forced induction, four cylinder engines produce between 184bhp and 310bhp and will consume significantly less fuel than the engines used previously. The 2.0 TDI with manual transmission and front wheel drive delivers 184bhp and like all of the engines it wll fulfill the Euro 6 standard. The 2.0 TFSI is mated to a manual six speed gearbox in both the TT and the TTS, with the six speed S tronic available as an option. The dual clutch transmission shifts gears lightning quick without any noticeable interruption in traction, and in manual mode it can be controlled by paddles on the steering wheel. Hello neighbours!

Aston Martin Lagonda 100 new Lagonda saloons are to be made, exclusively for the rich Middle East market. Each car is expected to cost around £400,000. Styling inspiration comes from the 1976 Lagonda designer William Towns. Lagonda was established in 1906 and has been owned by Aston Martin since 1947. Between 1974 and 1976, seven Lagonda fourdoor saloons were produced based on the Aston Martin V8. Vauxhall Viva Vauxhall have announced the Viva is making a comeback as an entry level model "designed for modern, everyday life". It will debut at Geneva next year and is planned to go on sale from the summer. It's likely that it will also be sold under the Opel brand in Europe as a replacement to the Opel Agila. The original Viva was produced between 1963 and 1979 and there are still 181 registered with DVLA in the UK.
Honda NSX Yes, the NSX is set to return to the streets next year if current plans go ahead. Let's hope so. The old NSX was Honda’s first and only supercar, designed to outperform a Ferrari 348. It was renowned for its performance (and unpredictability to lose control of the rear end). It was produced for 15 years between 1990 and 2005. Over 18,000 were sold worldwde.

Jaguar Mark 2. Jaguar's design chief Ian Callum and restorer Classic Motor Cars Limited have been collaborating for a year and a half on this restored and redesigned Mark 2. This modern take on the Jaguar Mk2 is Callum’s own design and an independent project outside of work, made for his personal use. However, it's now going to be put into limited production with a price tag around £375,000. It uses the modified 4.3 litre V8 engine from the Jaguar XK, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels. Complete with mod cons that weren't around at the time of the original; power steering, adjustable dampers, airbags, etc, etc. As for performance.. well he's not saying. It is his own car afterall.
Blinged Up Mercedes. This dazzling 2011 Mercedes CLS 350 was seen on the streets of London last month, parked up outside The Levin Hotel in Knightsbridge. It's been covered in one million Swarovski fake diamonds which took a team of workers 2 months to put on. The owner is 21 year old Russian Daria Radionova, who is studying business management in London. "I wanted to have something unique and do something special. The people who did it came over from Russia and worked for 12 hours a day for two months on the car".
The Renaultsport R.S. 01. This sleek racing car has been built as the centrepiece of a new one-make racing series, the Renaultsport Trophy, which starts next year. The power comes from a 3.8 litre twin-turbo V6 from the Nissan GT-R giving over 500bhp and 443lb ft, not far off of the GT-R's 542bhp and 466lb ft. It's weight is only 1100kg, that's 640kg lighter than the Nissan, so 0-60mph will be achieved in under 3 seconds. Although the R.S. 01 is intended to compete solely in the Renaultsport Trophy, the top dog in the Renault's World Series event, the race series feeds into GT and endurance events, including the Le Mans 24 Hours. The car has been designed around LMP1 safety standards, suggesting that Audi could have a serious competitor on their hands in the not-to-distant future. Only

1967 Seat 600 D
At the request of Amanda who, although I have only known her a short while is always so helpful and friendly and also her husband who I have only recently met, they seem good people to me. They have asked me to publish my story in this journal (our magazine, the magazine of all followers of classic cars in our country). I have decided to write something about my Seat 600. I can’t say it all or it would be a book, so I have written enough to give you a feel for what I have done to restore this pretty little car. I bought the vehicle second hand in 1973 and it was a fully working green car. I spent many years of my youth enjoying this extraordinary car. I travelled to many parts of Spain in it, including Madrid, Valencia, Cadiz, Malaga, Granada, etc. Often I used it as if it were a coach, carrying up to 7 people! It is true, Spaniards are traditionally shorter than British people, allowing more people to fit in. Less Brits would be able to fit in, although nowadays us Spaniards are growing taller and with the changes in driving laws, it would not be possible nowadays. After many adventures with my Seat and with a new car to carry my expanding family, I decided to store it for a while. I forgot all about it, although when I did see it, it was collecting dust, then the wheels fell off... But hey, at least it was in a garage safe from the weather. After many years, I received news of a club of vintage and classic cars that had formed in our area, and I said "Hombre, I have one, a Seat!" So, I went to work on restoring my long forgotten Seat. I bought all the necessary replacement parts to rebuild it back to its original condition, I spent a lot of money on it, wanting the car to be a full renovation, including renewing the complete assembly and all mechanics. One day, my son Mario told me that it was originally brown, but if we painted it brown it would look like and ant! He convinced me (without much difficulty) to change the colour. I didn’t mind, we decided to forget about copying the original exactly, but without completely losing it’s personality, and decided to customise it to suit our taste. We painted the car red and use it to attend events with the Seat 600 Club and take out for fun. You can come and see it in our garage in San Miguel. It is a car full of happy memories of my past, present and my future.

There were so many changes we made, but without wanting to bore you, I can tell you what the car now has: 903cc engine. Electronic ignition. 5 speed gearbox. Reinforced transmissions. Front disc brakes. Rear Brakes with a greater diameter. Brake servo. Double cooling circuit. Front and rear anti-roll bars. 13 Inch rims. Interior: Electric seats, central locking and electric windows. Radio CD, USB, DVD and mini bar.

Harley Davidson (23cm) These amazing glass sculptures are the work of José Vicente Maté, a second generation glass blower from Spain with more than 25 years experience. He has won many awards for his creations which are crafted from Borosilicate (more commonly known as Pyrex). We saw his work at a craft fair in Hondon de las Nieves this summer and had to find out more.
The Techinique Each piece made is completely handcrafted using the technique of glass blowing with a torch. Starting with hollow tubes and rods of glass with different diameters and thicknesses, the glass is fused to a temperature of just over 1,200ºC using a torch with a mixture of gas and oxygen. The individual parts are made first using a variety of tools such as tweezers, spatulas, punches and adding portions of molten glass and/or blowing air into the molten glass.

A replica of Santiago Herrero’s 1967 Ossa Monocasco, winner of three 250cc Spanish National Championships, as Vespa TX200 (18cm) well as competing in the 250cc World Championship and Isle of Man TT. The workshop/studio Artesania Maté also produce different designs from ideas commissioned by it’s customers and may be either a single piece as a limited series and numbered or if you want a replica of your classic motorcycle. This can be done from photographs, just send them to José and he will make it! The assembly of the parts is also done through glass melting and the union of the various parties at strategic points so that the connections remain hidden and the workpiece is clean and true to the original. No moulds or machines are used during the process making each article 100% handmade, with each finished piece unique, even in the case of a numbered series of the same model it is impossible to make two exactly the same.

2014 7th September Monza, Italy Lewis Hamilton was on pole position, but made a poor start after a part failure in the start system, dropping him into fourth as Nico Rosburg sped into the lead. Kevin Magnussen and Felipe Massa followed the leader as Lewis went after Kevin, passing him on lap 5. Five laps later Lewis went into second place after making a great move on Massa, holding the outside line at the first chicane and taking the place into the second, left-handed part. At that point, Lewis was 2.2 seconds behind Nico and he inched closer to be within 1.3 seconds when his team mate made his only pit stop on lap 24; his position as the lead car giving him priority on pit-stop timing. Lewis pitted a lap later and choosing to ignore his teams advice to "look after your tyres", he hunted down Nico, closing the gap to just 0.7 seconds by lap 28. Then Nico repeated an error he had made on lap 9, where he braked too late into the first chicane and was forced to take to the escape road. Lewis went into the lead as Nico drove round the bollards before rejoining the track.
Lewis held onto the lead to take a crucial win in his title chase, with Nico second and a delighted Felipe taking third place on the podium. Valterri Bottas took fourth with Daniel Ricciardo fifth after winning a superb multi-car fight between the Red Bulls, McLarens and Sergio Perez that went on throughout the race. Fernando Alonso had a DNF due to a hybrid system failure, his first mechanical retirement since 2009. A disappointment for the Tifosi who were out in huge numbers for Ferrari. They cheered ex-Ferrari driver Felipe on the podium, especially when he addressed the crowd in Italian. Not such a roaring reaction to Nico´s message also delivered in Italian, but he did clink the champagne bottle with Lewis, despite the two pointedly not communicating after the race as they waited to go onto the podium. Nico commented "Lewis drove a great race and he deserves it today." Felipe finishes in third at Monza

21st September Singapore, Singapore Lewis Hamilton was on pole, but Nico Rosburg had problems with his car and didn't get off the grid at the start of the formation lap. He had gear selection issues and had a change of steering wheel just prior to the race start. He began the race from the pit lane, but was lacking hybrid power and ran in last place before retiring. Lewis made a good start ahead of the two Red Bulls and Fernando Alonso made a flying start, but missed the first corner and went well off the track limits. He re-joined back in second but gave the place back to Sebastian Vettel to sit in third place ahead of Daniel Ricciardo. Lewis kept his lead in a steady race, changing to super-soft tyres on lap 26. The safety car came out on lap 31 after a collision between Sergio Perez and Adrian Sutil that led to Sergio's front wing detaching and leaving debris across the track. Fernando dropped to fourth at his pit stop and the race was restarted on lap 38. Lewis built up a 25 second gap before coming in for his final pit stop, taking the tyres dangerously close to them 'dropping off the cliff' in Lewis's eyes. He came out behind Sebastian, who momentarily led the race. Lewis overtook him quickly and a little hastily, but avoided any contact. Lewis went onto win the race while Daniel and Fernando battled to try and overtake Sebastian. They couldn't and Sebastian took second with team mate Daniel third and Fernando fourth. Felipe Massa made his tyres last to the end from his final pit stop on lap 22 to take fifth. Whereas his team mate Valtteri Bottas could not do the same and dropped from sixth to 11th as he lost all grip. Lewis now leads the Championship for the first time since May, three points ahead of title rival Nico with five races to go and 150 points available.

13th September 2014: Beijing, China Nicolas Prost, son of four-time Formula One champion Alain, was on Nicolas Prost (L) & Nick Heidfeld (R) pole and took the lead at the start in his E.Dams Renault car. He maintained his lead after the mandatory stop to change cars halfway through the race. In his eyes, he was all set to win the race, but Venturi's Nick Heidfeld had conserved his battery and was set to overtake him on the run to the last corner. As he moved to overtake, Prost moved across and made contact with the ex-F1 driver's car, sending it flying into the fencing in a very nasty looking crash. The relief was huge as Heidfeld got out of his car unhurt. Prost's car Nick Heidfeld’s Venturi was also damaged and came to a stop. Heidfeld quickly made his way to Prost who was walking away from the crash site having removed his helmet. Heated words were exhanged. Prost didn’t think he was to blame. Lucas di Grassi who was running in third found himself the winner of the first ever Formula E Grand Prix, for Audi Sport ABT. He said “Firstly, I’m happy Nick [Heidfeld] is ok and it shows how safe these cars are. To win the race is like a dream come true. I was Nick Heidfeld (L) & Nicolas Prost (R) lucky to be in the right place at the right After the race, Nicolas Prost was given a time". September Ace Café
This month saw Phoenix turn 7 with a party for our members. No scenic drive or mid term coffee stop, we got straight to the business of eating, drinking and catching up with friends as we celebrated our 7th birthday party. A big turn out of 50 members enjoyed lunch at El Prado in San Miguel and joined in for a verse of "Happy Birthday" as we cut the cake. With so many members present it was the ideal opportunity to make a presentation to Eric Clarke who is standing down as our senior Vocal - Events. Although he`s not off the hook entirely as he`s offered to contribute an occasional drive in future. Now we need someone to do a write up after the Ace Cafe for the website and this magazine! We also have to say a big "Thank-you" to Barbara Patten for slaving over a hot oven to make us our beautiful (and tasty!) birthday cake. Not a crumb remained. Phoenix Car Club

On the trip to Peñiscola, El Guiri et al stopped at a bike rally and this orange beauty was the winner of the custom show. Can you guess where the engine has come from?
Ride 17: Peñiscola North of Valencia, the name of the place comes from the Romans who first translated the Greek name into Latin pene-iscola (literally meaning 'almost island') and it's modern version holds even to this day, Peñiscola. The original settlement was a rocky headland all but surrounded by the sea save for a sandy strip connecting it to the mainland. It was a very much sought after stronghold due to it's easily defensible nature and an abundance of natural springs, making it possible to withstand long running sieges! The modern day Peñiscola has a much larger 'footprint' and it's difficult to imagine now how isolated from the mainland it would have appeared to an approaching army! The good news is, this means there's now a plethora of hotels to choose from. The original castle, built between 1294 and 1307 by the Knights Templars, rises 64 meters above sea level and has a perimeter of 230 meters but a lot of additional work has been done in the intervening Centuries. It was also the setting for the 1961 Hollywood blockbuster "El Cid", starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren. Our group didn't 'explore' the new (ish) part of town very much. However, the 'Old Town' set within the castle environs is fascinating! Narrow streets lined with numerous 'tourist' business', restaurants and cafes are a delight to wander through. Be careful though as despite the narrowness, vehicles still zip up and down those calles able to accept them. The whole town is picture postcard stuff, and in 1972 was declared a "Historical Conservation Area"

Nice. gate Valencia. Eventually you're faced with paying a toll (AP7) or taking the N340. The N340 is more scenic, but watch for cameras and adhere to speed limits or it could be a costly trip! When you see the signs for Peñiscola just follow them to the beach/front. Parking can be difficult (ahhh the beauty of motorcycles! Lol!!), so if you do stay in a hotel, make sure parking is included. Stay safe El Guiri Peñiscola
Being 370 kilometres from Torrevieja, travelling time (approx 4-5 hours avoiding tolls) means it's impossible to get the most out of your visit in one day. When we went the club was already in Castellon for the weekend. But without exception, everyone said they intended to return for a longer visit asap. You don't get a better recommendation than that do you?! Almost 400 kilometres, but extremely easy to access! From Torrevieja: Take the AP7, then join the A7/E15 north, exit at, and follow signs for "A7-Valencia...A31-AlbaceteMadrid" continue on A31 direction Albacete until you see the signs for the new(ish) section of "A7 Alcoy", This eventually links up with the A35 (direction Valencia). 31st August Silverstone, Great Britain A great battle was fought as Jorge Lorenzo pulled into the lead and was chased by the Championship leader Marc Marquez. Marquez took the lead a couple of times, but made a few errors and allowed Lorenzo back in front. The fight continued to the last lap with some touching at one stage. Marquez finally took the win only 0.732s ahead of Lorenzo. Marquez becomes the first rider since Valentino Rossi in 2005 to win 11 MotoGP races in a single season. Rossi took third place. 14th September San Marino, Italy Jorge Lorenzo took the lead, but was closely followed by Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez who swapped second and third place repeatedly, eventually both overtaking Lorenzo. Marquez lost the front of his Honda under braking and crashed for the first time since June 2013 at Mugello. Rossi kept his lead to take the win in front of his home crowd with Lorenzo coming in second ahead of Dani Pedrosa. Rossi's victory was his first in Italy since the same race in 2009. 28th September Aragon, Aragon We will report on this next month.
