Flajole Forerunner

This pretty little car is the Flajole Forerunner, built in 1955 by American designer Bill Flajole. He used a 1953 Jaguar XK120 as a base, which was one of the best sports cars of the day. Bill spent over 7,000 hours designing and building the unique car. He spent around £4,000 on the project, which was a lot at the time, considering the UK average house price back then was just £2,000. When it was built, the Forerunner had a number of futuristic design elements including a retracting tinted Plexiglas roof and bucket seats with built in headrests.
It has been described as 'one of the most beautiful and innovative concepts' and is now up for sale for a price of just £200,000.

This beautiful looking Formula 3 racing car was built for the legendary racing driver Don Parker by the Swansea-born car designer Cyril Kieft in the 1950s. Kieft’s cars were used by some of the greatest drivers of the era, with Stirling Moss, Ken Wharton and Bernie Ecclestone all using his carefully made racing machines. Kieft’s 1952 Formula 3 Monoposto, pictured here, goes under the hammer on September 15 at the Goodwood Revival.
Can you remember the Gilbern? The Welsh fibreglass car that took on Jaguar and BMW in the 60's? Manufactured by Giles Smith and Bernard Friese, the addition of powerful V6 engines in 1966 helped it to compete against the big boys. Celebrity owners included the Prince of Wales and Anthony Hopkins, helping to promote this Welsh innovative (fibreglass was a new material in cars) - if not beautiful car. This is the ZeCar, OK, so it's not beautiful in looks, but it is the only five-seat electric car on sale in Britain today and is homegrown, made in Port Talbot. Stevens Vehicles Ltd are a father and son team and have been manufacturing the ZeCar and ZeVan from 2008.

The Star Cars of the Olypmics I'm sure most of you saw these glorious Rolls-Royce at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympic Games. The three Phantom Series II Drophead CoupĂŠs carried Jessie J, Tinie Tempah and Taio Cruz. The singers were hidden from view before being revealed as the roofs retracted.
Each Rolls had a newly-designed badge, which is the first time in the company’s 108year history. The new badges, designed by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Design Team, replaced the traditional double R-R for the first time since the company started in 1904. Interestingly, they were all left hand drives.
The new grille badge featured the Spirit of Ecstasy with patriotic Union Flag replacing the traditional flowing gown of the Graceful Little Goddess. The steering wheel hub included a laurel wreath and torch, and the self-righting wheel centres featured the words ‘London 2012’. The badges were complemented by tread plates identifying each car as ‘One of Three’. Rolls Royce have said that the cars will either go to a museum or private collector as a collection of 3.

Automatic Braking. The new Mazda CX-5 has come in for praise from European vehicle safety organisation Euro NCAP for being at the forefront of its drive to equip all models with life-saving Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). The Mazda CX-5 employs the ‘Smart City Brake Support’, its maker’s AEB system and is one of the few models on sale in the UK using the technology fitted as standard across its range. ‘Smart City Brake Support’ operates at speeds of up to 19mph and uses a laser sensor to detect a vehicle in front of the car. If the driver fails to slow the vehicle appropriately, or to take avoiding action, the system automatically activates the brakes and reduces the engine output at the same time. This helps to avoid collisions or mitigate the damage from rear-end collisions at low speeds, which are among the most common accidents.

The Folding Car Some bright spark has come up with the idea of making a car that can fold up to fit into a small parking space and it goes on sale next year. A perfect solution for commuters in city centres where parking is hard to find and spaces are tight. Researchers from Changing Places group, working in collaboration with the Spanish Basque region's development agency DENOKINN have developed the Hiriko Fold, a convenient, eco-friendly electric car for city commuting. The two-seater vehicle, which is capable of travelling up to 75 miles between charges, is even equipped with zero-turn radius wheels that allow it to move sideways - making parallel parking a cinch. Prototypes of the Hiriko Fold are already on trial in European cities for testing and it's now been confirmed that the vehicle is expected to go on sale in 2013 for around £10,000. Motor Racing in Wales. A new £250 million motor racing circuit is being planned for south Wales, to open by 2015. It is hoped the 3.5-mile Circuit of Wales in Ebbw Vale, proposed by The Heads of the Valleys Development Company, will host MotoGP, World Superbikes, World Motocross and Touring Car races. The main circuit will be accompanied by an international kart track and motocross tracks, and as part of the plans the project will also include investment in industrial, commercial and leisure developments. A race academy is also in the pipeline to develop young British and European elite riders and drivers. Detailed plans are being finalised this year, with work starting on the development early next year.

The McLaren X-1 is a one-off car commissioned by an unknown multi-millionaire who wanted something 'timeless' and with 'classical elegance'. The X-1 is estimated to be worth over £1m and was based on the MP4-12C, a host of other cars, a grand piano and a black and white photo of Audrey Hepburn. After three-years of discussion, design and construction, McLaren unveiled the X-1 at the Pebble Beach Concours show in Monterey, California last month.

With Clare Lawrence Stefan Johansson has been involved in international motorsport for nearly 30 years. He has competed in Formula One and IndyCar, as well as Le Mans style sports car racing. He won the 12 Hours of Sebring twice (with Porsche and Ferarri) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans (with Porsche). He is on McLaren’s 50 Greatest Drivers list, at number 19 for his time spent with them in his F1 career in the early 80’s. Hi Stefan! It’s so wonderful to be interviewing you. Thank you for taking time out to feature in the Costa Car Trader Auto Magazine… Many thanks; it’s a great pleasure to join you! Can you remember a time now before you entered the world of Formula One? I remember very well, there were many years of struggle and hardship before I finally made into the world of F1, but along with it of course many great memories also… What was life like during the days of your Formula One racing? It was great but also very hard. The pressure in F1 is enormous, and the workload is huge between racing, testing and all the sponsor work the drivers have to do. But of course it’s a dream life really, if you think there’s 24 guys in the entire world each year that get to do what we do, there is nothing that anyone should ever complain about! I am sure that you know about the McLaren’s 50 Greatest Drivers list of which you are featured in! How does this make you feel? Great of course, I am good company as Mclaren is well know for always hiring the best drivers available in each era… When you left Formula One, you took on various other racing challenges – Can you tell me about these? I have done pretty much everything there is to do in racing, except NASCAR, maybe more so than any current driver. Each and every category of racing bring their own challenges, and you really need to become a specialist in each one in order to be successful, some were a lot easier than others but they all brought their own unique disciplines and adjustments which makes it very interesting for a driver to figure out of course!
Have you ever been frightened during a race where you felt that if you’d have perhaps done something slightly differently, there could have been an entirely different outcome? Normally you try to control the environment the best you can when you race, but of course there are times when you have to step out of your comfort zone and ‘dig” a bit deeper in order to get the job done. There have certainly been moments when you have a fraction of a second to make a decision, of course there are times when that decision may not bring the best outcome in that particular situation, so yes there have certainly been times when you replay the event in your mind you realise that had I done this or that instead the outcome would have been a lot different. Do you love everything that comes (hand-in-hand) with fame or are there some things that you wish you could pick and chose? (For example, press intrusion). I don’t see a lot of good can come out of fame, for me it’s the evil step brother of success. I wish one could have success without fame… If you had not have gotten into racing, is there anything else that you think you would have been as enthusiastic about? Designing products perhaps? Yes, nowadays I am just as passionate about my design and art ventures, and had I not been a driver I think I would have studied to become an architect…
Stefan Johansson Can you please tell me more about Stefan Johansson Timepieces – What inspired you to begin designing watches? I was always interested in watches, like most men, from quite an early age. The design part started when I was approached by a company to endorse their watches, while I was still racing in F1. The design of this particular watch was not very appealing and I didn't feel comfortable endorsing something I would most likely not wear, so I suggested we do a collaboration on the design to make a product that was truly my own. I know that you have many loyal fans from the world of racing, but who are some of your notable watch-collector fans? I have a very eclectic mix of collectors of my watches, ranging from Hollywood A list actors and some of the most famous people in the racing world of course, a lot of genuine watch collectors and aficionados and more recently a lot of custom made pieces either for select individuals to companies that want something that is totally unique. For example, recently I made a one off piece for the CEO of one the major groups in the watch industry with the specific colors he wanted on the dial. THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MOTOR RACING FESTIVAL 20-22 JULY 2012

Billed as The Largest Classic Motor Racing Festival in the world, Silverstone had a lot to live up to and it delivered. For the Classic Racing fans there were iconic vehicles as far as the eye could see and many were being raced by the heroes of the period. It was possible to get up close and personal with the cars, and often their drivers in the pit garages. Access to the grandstands was included in the ticket price and a good view of the racing could be seen from many a vantage point whilst listening to the informed commentary over the loud speakers.

Many racers pencil this meeting into their diary as a must do event and many grids were oversubscribed with the best cars and fastest drivers mixing it on the track. It is a great tribute to the skills of the drivers and organisers that there was only one safety car deployed over the two days of twenty four races. With limited space it is not possible to go through the program race by race but the results can be found on the Silverstone Classic web site; www.silverstoneclassic.com.

The Classic was blessed with summer weather which shone warmly on 83,500 visitors, the largest crowd in its 22 year history. Seventy three car clubs exhibited over 7,000 cars which in itself was impossible to view all in the time available. Amazing as it may seem a great number of the public go purely to enjoy the entertainment and never watch a race! This year live acts included Eighties chart toppers Mike & the Mechanics who headed Friday night’s line-up while Adam Ant and Snakecharmer entertained thousands of fans on Saturday evening.
The Classic has something for all the family. Among the most popular attractions were a vintage fun fair, go-karts, aerial displays with wing walkers, the Parachute Regiment, the Red Devils, hot air balloons, Punch and Judy (celebrating 350 years), rally car and 4x4 experiences plus a retail village with nearly 200 exhibitors presenting a wide range of auto jumble, automobilia, art, jewellery, books, videos and gifts for everyone. To enable visitors to view as much as possible a continuous shuttle bus service was in operation.

A carpet of red toured the Silverstone circuit marking a new world record when 60 Ferrari F40s took to the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit to celebrate the Italian supercar’s 25th birthday. The F40 was the world’s first 200mph road car when it appeared in 1987 a fitting memorial to legendary Enzo Ferrari as his last project before his death in 1988.

The Silverstone Classic Celebrity Challenge (8 laps), racing for charity was popular with the general public. Celebrities race in identical factory Morgans. Misfortune hit Brendan Cole one of the fancied front runners in the qualifying session when he ran into a tyre wall and was unable to take part in the race. Due to the disparity in lap times it is not thrilling to watch but does allow the autograph hunters a field day and more importantly raises much needed funds for the chosen charity’s Birmingham Children’s Hospital, the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK and the RPJ Chron’s Foundation. Top podium honours went to Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher. There were many smiling faces as the visitors left the circuit and all bodes well for 2013.

2012 29th July Budapest, Hungary Lewis Hamilton was on pole with Romain Grosjean alongside him. The Lotus driver dismissed a challenge from Sebastian Vettel at the first corner, which allowed Jenson Button to then move ahead of the World Champion through Turns 2 and 3. Jenson could not keep up with the front two and they pulled away in a two-car lead fight.

driver, Kimi Raikkonen, who had started in sixth and despite an initial problem with his Kers, fought his way up the pack in the middle of the race before his second and final stop and put in an impressive sequence of laps to make up enough ground to pass Jenson, Fernando, Sebastian and then team-mate Romain. He quickly closed in Lewis, and the question then became which driver's strategies would work out best - and would Lewis’s tyres last when he had made his final stop five laps before the Finn. He got to within a second of the leader, but then found he could get no closer, as Lewis upped his pace.
Lewis drove a controlled defensive race, similar to Fernando Alonso's when he won in Germany last time out and it paid off as he took the chequered flag with Kimi second. Sebastian fought for the final podium spot, but his decision to make a third pit stop, denied him it, as Romain took third 5 seconds ahead of Sebastian. Mark Webber also paid for a three-stop strategy, dropping out of fifth place and allowing Fernando Alonso to increase his points advantage by taking the spot. The stop also allowed Jenson Button and Bruno Senna to move ahead of the Australian, who had to settle for a frustrating eighth. Lewis is now 47 points behind championship leader Fernando Alonso after this, the 11th race of the season. There are 9 races still remaining, starting with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps on 2 September, following Formula 1's summer break.

12th August Snetterton Jason Plato took the chequered flag in the first race. Frank Wrathall came in second after Dave Newsham’s attempt to overtake Plato backfired. Andrew Jordan took third with Newsham being disqualified for having an underweight car. Race two saw a scrap with old rivals Jason Plato and Matt Neal. Plato led from the start but went into a slide after being hit by Neal’s Honda on the penultimate lap. Neal then ran off the track after more contact. Andrew Jordan went through to take the win with Gordon Shedden second. Plato took third ahead of Neal in fourth. Dave Newsham got his first win in the BTCC in the third race of the day ahead of Tom Onslow-Cole. Gordon Shedden came in third but was later disqualified for over boosting, promoting Jason Plato to third. 26th Knockhill Robert Collard took the win as he took the lead from the line ahead of Jason Plato, who was on pole. Race two saw a mirror image finish as Robert Collard took the double and Tom Onslow-Cole second. Gordon Shedden took third again at his home circuit, watched by his guest Sir Chris Hoy MBE. Race three was won by Scot Dave Newsham, who led from the start. Jeff Smith took second for his first podium in the BTCC, with Matt Neal in third. Justo Quesada Samper had a dream and that dream has seen Cuidad Quesada grow from nothing back in 1972 into the great town it is today. He was a true visionary of his time and had a leading role in launching residential tourism on the Costa Blanca. We talk to his son, José Ángel Quesada, about another passion his father had; his cars.

Did your father always have a love of cars? Yes, he always had a passion for cars. He was a bit of a show-off and liked cars that would draw attention. He loved taking me to car shows. Was it a dream for him to one day own a Rolls Royce? My father grew up working the fields and a windmill but after he got married, he managed to start a small transport business with three lorries. These were hand-cranked vehicles that ran on gasogene, which he had to start up at least an hour before he started working every morning just to heat them up and it used to be very hard work and gave him lots of problems. He would tell his mother that ‘one day things would be different’ and when that day came, he would buy the best prestige car to show for it. When did he buy his first Rolls? In 1989, he took me to a car show in Barcelona and bought his first Rolls Royce, the Silver Spirit. He loved the elegance and luxury of it. Do you remember him bringing it home on the first day? Yes, he was so excited, being able to own this car meant a lot to him and the first thing he did was to drive it into the cemetery in Elche and park it beside his mother’s grave to show her. He had tears streaming down his cheeks. Do you have a special memory of you and him with his car/s? We used to go for drives in his cars a lot. I have lots of fond memories going to car shows and driving with him in his cars. He always liked to hear my opinion about them. The Maybach was a car that he had to order before buying. I remember while he was choosing the interior and the spec etc, he would keep asking me what I thought and what he should choose. I always gave him the same answer which was that the car was for him and that he should choose it how he liked it because he would be driving it. When the car was delivered, as always, he would ask me to go for a ride with him and my mother, when I got in the back I said ‘Dad, you forgot the ash tray for me at the back’ and he replied ‘No I didn’t, you didn’t want to help me choose the spec, so I didn’t put the ashtray in because it was obviously not that important to you!’. So, the Maybach has no ashtray!

What can you tell me about the Jaguar XJS? My father bought the XJS from a car exhibition in Valencia. He loved that the roof top was automatic and that it had heated seats. In those days, the automatic roof was a new thing and everywhere he went with it, he used to show off opening and closing the roof top! I remember thinking he was like a little boy with a new toy, when he got that car. Why did he buy the Phantom? How does it compare to the Silver Spirit? I bought him the Rolls Royce Phantom as a gift. Both the Silver Spirit and the Phantom are fantastic, elegant and luxurious cars, but I bought the Phantom for him because it was more modern and therefore had the modern comforts and technology. It was a car he could use for long journeys. He and my mother used to drive to the ‘Rocio’ in Sevilla every year and that is a six hour journey. His cars are up for sale now - do you not share his love of cars? Yes, I love cars too, but I have a different taste in cars to him. Whilst my father was an extrovert and had a flare and large presence everywhere he went, I am much quieter compared to him and like to go by more unnoticed. My father could turn up anywhere in any of his cars and park them in a prohibited area or on the pavement and people would admire him and smile. If I did that they would probably insult me and make sure I got a fine! His cars don’t suit me and he would love for someone who loved them like he did to own them now. Someone who would “show them off” and flaunt them.

Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m.
4.
If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive.
5.
If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

2012 The first attempt to run race one at Silverstone, Great Britain was stopped after two separate crashes. The race restarted and Kawasaki Racing’s Loris Baz won his first in the SBK. Michel Fabrizio took second. The second race was shortened to eight laps after the rain fell so hard that three riders fell on the same part of the track, and so was red flagged. Sylvain Guintoli was declared the winner and half points were awarded. Race one at the new circuit in Moscow, Russia was won by Tom Sykes, with Marco Melandri Silverstone second and Max Biaggi third. Many of the other riders crashed out. Marco Melandri won the second race ahead of Tom Sykes after another 25-laps of full on drama and September Dates: incident. Melandri now leads 9 Nurburgring, Germany the championship. 23 Portimao, Portugal Catch it all on Eurosport.

29 July Laguna Seca, United States Jorge Lorenzo took the holeshot ahead of the two Repsol Honda riders. Casey Stoner hunted down Lorenzo, eventually passing him about halfway through. Stoner kept up his pace to take the win with Lorenzo finishing in second and Dani Pedrosa third. Valentino Rossi had a big crash near the end and was thankfully unhurt. 19 August, Indianapolis, United States Dani Pedrosa had a fantastic race, taking the win and circuit lap record. He finished over 10 seconds ahead of Jorge Lorenzo, with Andrea Dovizioso finishing third. Casey Stoner came in an amazing fourth after riding with a severe ankle injury sustained in qualifying. It was a bad day for American Ben Spies, since his engine blew up and he had to retire. Valentino Rossi announced his return to Yamaha next season. 26 August, Czech Republic, Brno Jorge Lorenzo smashed the lap record to take pole and take the lead in the first half of the race ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Cal Crutchlow. Pedrosa pushed past Lorenzo with 11 laps to go and the last lap saw some edge-of-your-seat action, as Lorenzo took back the lead, but Pedrosa took it back straight away and they were level going into the final turn. Pedrosa had the better line and was able to take the victory ahead of Lorenzo and Crutchlow, who got his first ever podium in the MotoGP class. Dani Pedrosa is now only 13 points behind Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo.
