Editors Notes:

A new era in motorsport begins this month with the start of the Formula E Championship. The ten races are being held in cities around the world and we are looking forward to watching it. We will miss the noise from the engines, but think it’ll be an interesting addition to the motorsport calendar and help develop new technologies as the world looks to become ever greener. On the other side, F1 is hotting up as the rivalry between the Mercedes title contenders causes an ‘unacceptable’ incident. We’ve got the answers to the quiz we set in August and announce the lucky winner. Thanks to everyone who submitted their entries and we were surprised at how many people guessed so many of the drivers. Jill Carter has a wonderful article to help you prepare for a track day, be it first timers or regulars who will find it a useful checklist. Clare Lawrence has interviewed a well known TT biker: William Dunlop, see what he has to say on page 13. Onto our own biker, El Guiri and his trip to a beautiful Santuario in the rice growing region of Calasperra. We take a look at Ssangyong and Saab and have a report from the Silverstone Classic, so enjoy the read! Happy motoring! Professor

When 4 just isn’t enough, 6 wheels are needed.. Tyrrell P34 In 1976, the Formula One world was stunned by Tyrell's latest car, the P34. It was very competitive and at the Swedish GP the Tyrrell drivers took both first and second place. However, the added weight and supply of bespoke front tyres eventually saw the ‘solution’ to the lack of front-end mechanical grip become a problem in itself. A rule change ended the 6 wheelers run. Covini C6W This car was first designed in the 70s by Italian sports car builder Covini Engineering, inspired by the Tyrrell P34. Following a partnership with PMI SpA production started in 2010, making around 8 cars a year. The engine is a 4.2ltr V8 which produces 420hp and a top speed of 185 mph. The sportscar is available as a coupe or roadster and sells for around €300,000.

Panther Six In 1977 the Panther Six was launched at the Earl's Court Motor Show and had a 8.2ltr Cadillac V8 giving 600bhp and a reputed top speed of over 200mph. But only two were ever made, a black and a white one and both are still in existence, with one being sold at auction in 2011 for only €41,400. What a bargain!

Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 Previously only for Australian military use, Mercedes-AMG have just brought out a civilian version of this monster in a small limited-edition series. It has a 5.5ltr V8 bi-turbo engine pushing out 544hp. At 2.3 metres high, 2.1 metres wide and 5.87 metres long this car is in a class of its own.

Preparing for a Track Day by Jill Carter This is a follow on feature from the previous articles published in February and March 2014, describing six different motor racing circuits in Spain. If you failed to read these they can be found at www.costacartrader.net. A search through the internet will find when and where track days can be accessed. To enjoy them to the full and have a car to drive home it is important that you prepare yourself and the car prior to taking to the track. Choosing The Track

At The Circuit

Decide whether you want to make a short break or a day trip as this will limit the tracks available. You may wish to have a group of friends join you and this can add to the ‘special’ feel of the experience. Some tracks charge per car and others per driver whereas if you are involved in a charity day it is not unusual for a nominal fee to be charged for passengers.

Usually there is a signing on position followed by a drivers briefing. If possible obtain a map of the circuit and learn the lines to take through the curves and where you will make the apex. I liked to have tuition with an instructor first which enabled me to get the best out of the day, but I was driving a single seater racing car and was either preparing for a race or becoming familiar with a new car.

The Week Before

Find a place to set up camp and remove any loose items from car as these become dangerous missiles when driving. Korando EXL4 Rexton W Two special edition Ssangyong models have been announced to celebrate this milestone. The Korando was crowned 2014 Caravan Club Towcar of the Year in the under £16,000 category with its recent internal and external facelift. Based on the 2.0ltr turbo diesel Korando EXL4, the bithday edition comes with 18" diamond cut wheels, electric sunroof, rear spoiler, chrome detailing and pearl white lily metallic paint finish. It will cost around £21k for a manual, £23k for auto.

This year Ssangyong celebrates its 60th birthday and although Ssangyong only entered the European market 20 years ago, the brand actually began production back in 1954. Originally Ssangyong started out in 1954 as Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop. In 1963 it merged with Dongbang Motor Co and started to build jeeps, trucks, busses and later special purpose vehicles. In 1987, it acquired the UK based car maker Panther Westwinds.

The 4x4 Rexton W limited edition is based on the EX model and includes front parking sensors, electric sunroof, heated front and rear seats, DAB SatNav, and pearl white lily metallic paint. The 2.0ltr Euro 5 turbo diesel model comes pricey at over £25k for the 6-speed manual version and over £27k for the Mercedes Benz equipped Trip Tronic five-speed automatic.

MOTORS IN THE NEWS

Auction Record Smashed. A Ferrari considered to be one of the greatest models ever built has sold at auction for a record $38,115,000 (£22.84m). The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta is number 19 of the 39 made in total. It competed in a number of races including one which ended in tragedy when, in 1962, driver and former French ski champion Henri Oreiller was killed. The wrecked car was repaired and his family continued to race it until very recently. The Ferrari went under the hammer at Bonhams' auction in California last month and the huge crowd watching the bidding clapped as the auctioneer confirmed the final price. That topped the previous record for a car sold at auction, set last year at Bonhams' Goodwood Festival of Speed auction, with the sale of a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 R F1 Racer for $30m (£18m).

New Models on the Horizon. We've been bombarded with press releases, rumours and talk of future models for some of the top class brands. We've had a sort through and picked some of the more interesting ones. 1. McLaren P13 This is due out next summer and may be called the 500S, due to it's power output of 500bhp. Why? Because the 650S has taken its name the same way. Entering the under €200K market, the P13 will take on high-end 911s such as the GT3 and the Turbo as well as Mercedes’ GT AMG and Maserati’s Alfieri. 2. Bugatti 286mph Veyron Successor The new unamed Bugatti is currently undergoing “conceptual engineering tests” and is due out in 2016. Like the current Veyron, the next Bugatti will use the same 8.0 ltr W16 engine with four turbochargers. But, it will have an electric motor as well that will push the output to 1,479 horsepower. That’s nearly 300 more horsepower than the record-holding Veyron SS. Bugatti are also set to limit this new model to the same 450 examples as the Veyron. 3. Rolls-Royce Drophead Tourer Due out in summer 2016, RRs new drophead tourer model has Astonand Martin no name like the Bugatti is currently undergoing a rigorous DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo process of prototype testing ahead of its next stage of development.

Just For Fun. This amazing looking Ferrari F80 supercar concept is the work of automotive designer Adriano Raeli from Italy. It's his take on a replacement for the Ferrari LaFerrari, which was codenamed F70 in sequence after the Enzo (F60), the F50 and the F40. His vision packs some punch under the bonnet too, combining a 300hp KERS electric drive unit with a 900hp twin-turbo V8, which would produce a massive 1,200hp. 0-62mph would take just 2.2 seconds and top speed would be in the region of 310mph. Lets hope the bosses at Ferrari sit up and take note.

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MOTOR RACING FESTIVAL 25-27 JULY 2014

Sir Stirling Moss and David Brabham

To mark the 50th Grand Prix held at the track (on 6th July 2014, which was won by Lewis Hamilton), the largest collection of Grand Prix cars ever were paraded on the track. The 84 F1 cars were led by Sir Stirling Moss in a Maserati 250F and David Brabham, son of three-time World Champion Sir Jack Brabham. Sir Jack passed away in May and is the only man to win an F1 Championship in a car bearing his own name. In his honour, his son drove a Brabham BT24 at the parade. Other F1 cars included those from pre-World War 2 from the Brooklands era right up to Lotuses and Williams from 1960s to 80s DFV era. A Talbot-Lago T26C also took part which was entered into the first Silverstone Grand Prix in 1948 for Lord Selsdon.

Keeping its World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival title, the 2014 event attracted a record crowd of 94,000 and also boasted a new record number of race entries. In total, 1,125 vehicles took part in the 22 races which covered over 90 years of motor racing history. With racing, celebratory parades, two rock concerts, iconic classic car displays and a fairground, it had something for everyone.

Ford Mustang marked its 50th birthday with a parade of a record 175 of the Pony cars. The Mustang P51 air display ran simultaneously creating a unique experience for the spectators. There was a chance to see the Mustangs racing as well, with two Mustang Celebration Races taking place. The 58 car grids included a record 30 race-prepared Mustangs. The packed line-up included Shelby GT350s as well as former F1 driver and Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver. The new 2015 Mustang headed the parade.

With Clare Lawrence William Dunlop is a motorcycle racer from Northern Ireland who rides for Tyco Suzuki. His family is steeped in motor racing history; he is the son of Robert, brother of current TT winner Michael and nephew of legandary Joey Dunlop, who holds the record for most wins at the Isle of Man TT. Hi William – It’s so nice to be chatting with you for this month’s Under the Spotlight. Thank you for taking part in this interview.

How much time do you get to yourself when you are not racing / practising or partaking in other work that’s related to your career like publicity?

You have raced in the Isle of Man TT on numerous occasions now. How does it feel to race in this unique event?

I'm lucky, I get a lot of time to myself and do lots of sports. I enjoy getting away from home too, places out of the way where I feel more comfortable since no-one knows me. I get a bit paranoid when people look, usually though it’s just in my head!

At first I never liked the TT, but now I know where I'm going I enjoy the whole event and really look forward to it. The way in which people regard the event makes it so special, it’s very highly thought of worldwide. What would it mean to you to win the Isle of Man TT? This is my main goal, a TT win - it seems to be everyones that compete in road races. It's the height of the sport and is the one race I haven't won yet. What are your other racing ambitions? I've won many races in my career so far and once I have achieved a TT win, I want an international superbike victory. Then I'd be happy. It's nice winning other races again, the more you do the better. It's nice having records. Where else do you seek the thrill that you get from racing? Do you like to drive fast cars too for example? Racing has no equals for me. I do enjoy cars and many sports but none compare. I'm very competitive and the fact I'm doing well at racing is the reason I do it more than for the thrill. I love all sports but not at a high level. Can you imagine ever doing anything else? This is all I know and all I will ever do. I've no skills or desires in anything else if it was to be stopped I’d have no purpose. Have you travelled much for your racing? I have to travel a lot race-wise since I race almost every weekend. I've been lucky to race in a few European races and in Hong Kong, but road racing at home does the same job.

WILLIAM DUNLOP What would you take with you on a desert island if you could only take 10 things? All I need is my phone and TV; it seems to be my only interest outside of sport. I wouldn’t mind taking Megan Fox with me either!

I notice from your website that you play golf. What’s your handicap and are you able to play often? It's around 12 at the moment. I really enjoy golf and get to play regularly since I can train around times to suit my schedule. I play just for fun though, I don’t do competitions. You also play football – Do you do this on a regular basis? I try to play as much as possible. I play every Saturday up at Castledawson, unfortunately I don’t train with the team through the week, as I do my own stuff. I have a personal trainer, so come evening time, I rest. I do a little indoor (football) once a week. It's a sport I would have loved to be professional at, but I'm not good enough, so bikes it is. Is there a particular team that you support? I've been a Spurs fan from a kid. I do take an interest in them and have watched them play at White Hart Lane.

Thanks again William, it’s been great interviewing you and we wish you the best of luck for your future career. We report on the TT each year and will watch you with interest. Good luck! Formula 1 News

2014 24th Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium The drama started in the first few minutes. Pole sitter Nico Rosburg was overtaken by Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel on the first corner. Nico fought back and was behind Lewis on the second lap and went to overtake. Nico didn't have enough room and hit Lewis as the Brit followed the racing line causing a puncture on Lewis's car and damage to his own. Lewis pitted to replace his tyre and came out in 19th place with a damaged car, eventually retiring later in the race. Nico pitted for a new front wing, but his car was also damaged and he struggled to keep in first place. Sebastian was running in second until an error on lap 5 allowed Daniel Ricciardo to pass. As Nico pitted on lap 8, Daniel took the lead and steadily built up a 20 second gap to the German behind. Kimi Raikkonen was in third for most of the race, the best he has been all season. Valtteri Bottas had another good race and overtook Kimi with 8 laps to go. Nico made a pit stop with only 10 laps to go and began catching Daniel at a rate of 2 seconds per lap. The Red Bull driver drove well to keep Nico at bay and take the win for the third time this season. Nico took second and Valtteri once again found himself on the podium in third place. Kimi took fourth ahead of Sebastian, who came out on top of the closing laps four-way battle with Kevin Magnussen, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. Nico now has a 29 point advantage over Lewis.

The Mercedes clash Daniel Ricciardo takes the win

The Aftermath In post-race interviews, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff and Non-Executive Chairman Niki Lauda both criticised Nico's driving, saying it was ‘unacceptable’ for that to happen on lap 2. Nico received boos on the podium and would not comment on the incident until he had seen the replay. Eddie Jordan laid the blame squarely at the feet of the team bosses themselves in the post race discussions on BBC1. Lewis came out of a post race meeting claiming that Nico had admitted that he hit him deliberately. "He said he could have avoided it, but he didn't want to. He basically said, 'I did it to prove a point'." Nico has since said "I've been told what Lewis said in the press and how he stated his version of events. All I can say is that my version of events is very different”. Toto Wolff says that the team will allow both drivers to calm down before engaging in any further discussions about the incident.

Toro Rosso have signed Dutchman Max Verstappen to race for them next year. He will be the youngest F1 driver in history when he competes in next year's championship. He turns 17 next month and will break the record by almost two years. Spain's Jaime Alguersuari was 19 years and 125 days when he raced in Hungary, also for Toro Rosso in 2009. The youngest driver to earn a Championship point is Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat, who was 19 when he finished ninth in this season's opening race in Australia. The Russian will be Max's team-mate in 2015. Max is currently racing in this year's Formula Three Championship and is the son of former Formula 1 driver Jos who competed in 106 grands prix for teams including Benetton and Tyrrell between 1994 and 2003. Interestingly, the minimum age to drive a car in Holland is 18. Bernie Ecclestone, the head of Formula 1 has said he wants to run the sport for "as long as I can" after paying £60m to end his three-month bribery trial. In his first major interview since he avoided a possible 10-year prison sentence, 83 year old Bernie said he always believed he would walk away a free man. "I'm not scared of anything to be honest with you," he said. "It never bothered me because I knew I was innocent." The F1 chief went on trial in April accused of paying German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky £26m to ensure that CVC, a private equity company he allegedly favoured, could buy F1 and he could remain in control of the sport.

September Dates 7th Monza, Italy 21st Singapore, Singapore Watch live on Sky Sports F1™ and some live races on BBC1. Driver Standings 1: Nico Rosburg 220 2: Lewis Hamilton 191 3: Daniel Ricciardo 156

Formula E is a new FIA single-seater championship and the world's first fully-electric racing series. Starting this month and finishing in June 2015, the championship will compete in the heart of 10 of the world's leading cities. For the inaugural season, 10 teams, each with two drivers, will go head-to-head in the same cars creating a unique and exciting racing series designed to appeal to a new generation of motorsport fans. It represents a vision for the future of the motor industry over the coming decades, serving as a framework for R&D around the electric vehicle, accelerating general interest in these cars and promoting sustainability. From season two, Formula E will operate as an 'open championship', allowing teams and manufacturers the opportunity to showcase their own electrical energy innovations. Working to the technical specifications set out by the FIA, teams will focus their efforts on improving and developing battery technology in the hope this will filter into the everyday electric vehicle market. The championship centres around three core values of Energy, Environment and Entertainment and is a fusion of engineering, technology, sport, science, design, music and entertainment, all combining to drive the change towards an electric future.

The Car 1: Car Construction Newly formed Spark Racing Technology, based in France and led by the experienced Frédéric Vasseur, will build a total of 42 SRT_01E cars for the first season of the FIA Formula E Championship. 2: Powertrain & Electronics World leading McLaren Electronic Systems will supply the electronics for the SRT_01E in addition to the powertrain. 3: Systems Integration Systems integration will be carried out by Official Technical Partner Renault, a leader in electric vehicles and an expert in motorsport thanks to its Renault Sport Technologies and Renault Sport F1 programmes. 4: Battery Design Williams Advanced Engineering, part of the Williams group of companies that includes the world famous Williams F1 Team, will supply the batteries for the SRT_01E producing 200kw, the equivalent of 270bhp. 5: Chassis Monocoque chassis designed and constructed by leading Italian firm Dallara. Made from carbon fibre and aluminium, the chassis is both super lightweight and incredibly strong and fully complies with the 2014 FIA crash tests - the same used to regulate Formula One. 6: Tyres All SRT_01E cars will be fitted with bespoke 18" treaded tyres specially designed by Michelin for use in both wet and dry condtions. Drivers will receive three sets to cover both their cars for a full race day with the tyres themselves providing high durability in all weather conditions and surfaces.

August Ace Café

It was a hot day for the Ace, but it was as successful as ever, parking space was at a premium with the side roads taken by late comers. Star of the month has to go to Jose, owner of a 1973 BMW 2002 many say that it is the best car ever to come out of Munich. Restored in metallic light blue and with a fully rebuilt engine (photo top right). These two litre fuel injected motors with road manners to match were the weapon of choice for many motor sports drivers. With a top speed of 120 mph+ it was difficult to beat. With the continuing success of these meetings please drive carefully and slowly in the car display area as many people stand gazing at the cars and do not see or hear you. A friendly “toot” is much better than an accident. Phoenix Car Club

The Phoenix Ace Café meet takes place on the first Sunday of each month at 11:00 at Hotel La Torre, Los Montesinos and is open to members and all car enthusiasts. 10th August Indianapolis, USA

World Champion Marc Marquez won his tenth consecutive race, equalling Mick Doohan’s 1997 record of winning ten successive premier class races. It was also the 100th win for a Spanish rider in the premier class and the 500th win for Spain across all categories. Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi took second and third.

17th August Brno, Czech Republic

The day belonged to Dani Pedrosa, as he stormed from fifth on the grid to take the win by half a second from Jorge Lorenzo. Valentino Rossi was third with Marc Marquez finishing fourth. It is the first time this year that the World Champion did not win the race and this is the first time he has finished a MotoGP race off the podium. Is that you, El Guiri?

A group of riders meet on Thursdays 10am (weather permitting) at the Sunset Cafe, Cabo Roig. Call 671 826 201 or email mollyandbaileybassett@hotmail.com if you fancy joining them.

Ride 16: Santuario de Nuestra Se単ora de Esperanza As Micheal Caine said (or didn't!?) "Not a lot of people know that!" But, just 150km away from the touristy sun, sea and sangria Costa Blanca; lies a very different Spain. One of green wooded hill sides, fast flowing rivers and... Paddy Fields! Yes, I did say Paddy Fields, as in to grow rice! Calasaparra rice has been cultivated in the area for 700 years and is perfect for paellas. There are quicker and easier ways to get there, but this is the route we took, and very nice it was too! From the Sunset Cafe we passed through San Miguel and Torremendo, taking the CV949/RM310 and RM303 to Santomera. Once out of the built up area and on the RM423 we stopped at Hotel Los Perriquiros for a rest and drinks. Because the next leg was a long one and no petrol station at the next stop, the 2 Sportsters refuelled at the adjacent gas station (They've got reeealy small tanks, Sportsters!). On into Fortuna and hang a left at the lights onto the RM411 towards Archena. On the approach to Archena you join the A30 Autovia heading north. A quick blast up the A30, off at salida 89, signed 'Jumilla, Calasparra'. Follow the signs for Calasparra until you find yourself climbing a long hill with a 'crawler lane'. Just as the crawler lane comes to an end, take the junction on your right marked 'Calasparra/Socovos'. At the roundabout there's a sign for the Santuario on the first exit. Follow the signs, staying on the same road until you reach the parking area for the Santuario. The Santuario sits alongside the impressive (for southern Spain) River Segura, which meanders through through the countryside before eventually disgorging it's contents into the Med near to Guardamar. Built into the rock, the buildings are quite dramatic and the setting is far removed from the usual tourist image/idea of Spain. With a very good restaurant and gift shop on site, meandering country and riverside walks; it really does provide a 'day out' that is both relaxing and interesting whilst remaining easily accessible from the Coast. After Rob had lit a candle for Pepe and everyone else had eaten etc; the group set off to 'explore'! The first part of the plan went OK. But when Rob came to the intended

junction that is marked as a road on the map, it was clear that the 'road' (track?) was not suitable for motorcycles (or anything else that isn't either 4 wheel drive or a hire car! lol!). We had an unplanned but pleasant ride through some interesting countryside: Small twisty B-road types, wide open vistas, cooling riverside lanes, wooded hills (sadly burnt, victim of wild fires in places), abandoned 'ghost towns' (akin to the Top Gear episode set in Spain). A small village girdled with steel gates ready for their annual 'running with the bulls'! But what sticks in my mind is the shanty/abandoned Fun Fair/American Dessert Bar/Diner that looked like something out of a Hollywood Horror movie!? I'm sure I wasn't the only one who rode a bit quicker going past that?! Lol! We joined the A30 again, this time heading South and took the exit for Archena then just retraced our steps home. Thanks to Handy Andy who was Tailgunner for the day, and everyone else who came along. Stay safe El Guiri
