BMW GOES ELECTRIC
This is an electrically driven car which has been designed from scratch and is as green as possible. It is constructed of carbonfibre with an aluminium chassis which houses the batteries. The electric motor produces 170bhp and 0-60 in around 7 seconds. Pushing it around should give a minimum of 80 miles and a 100 miles if you take it easy and all with zero emissions. If your need more juice out of the batteries then for a little extra you can opt for the Range Extender version, this is a 650cc two cylinder petrol motor mounted above the rear axle. This will recharge the batteries boosting the range to between 160-186 miles. There is a premium for this though so expect to pay around 40k.

BMW, Luxury Yacht and a good whisky, what more can a person wish for? by Jill Carter Whilst wandering around Copenhagen as part of our Baltic cruise we happened upon, John Walker & Sons Voyager. The 1920s-style yacht, which set sail in Shanghai in September, travelled around Asia for six months before starting its European leg in May from Portofino, Italy. Its final stop will be Edinburgh, the birthplace of the brand almost two centuries ago. The aim of the trip for John Walker and Sons Odyssey is the promotion of a new super-premium triple malt which retails for £580. John Kennedy, president of Western Europe, Diageo, said: "Europe remains today the luxury capital of the world, with recent figures showing that consumer spending on luxury goods in Europe is higher than any other region” adding that "John Walker & Sons Voyager is a fantastic way to reach consumers – it is an exceptional platform that will help to further establish and extend our luxury credentials." BMW were involved in taking VIP visitors to and from the yacht. Both John Walker & Sons and BMW were also giving out a strong message of the importance of responsible drinking. Keen to have a closer look I managed to obtain an invite for Martin and myself to have a tour and couldn’t help but try a couple of cocktails and tinkle the ivories on the baby grand piano, yes, on a yacht! Everyone was happy to answer my questions and lent me a couple of photographers for the event, provided I was in them! Not all of Johnnie Walker whiskey is priced so high but whichever blend you like you are certain of a true standard. The entry level Red Label has a long heritage and beloved by many whisky imbibers. A favourite method of summer luncheons is to dip a ripe strawberry in water, then black pepper, eat in one bite and follow with a nip of whisky!

It was 120 years ago when Rudolf Diesel fired up his first diesel engine in Augsburg, Germany. This was revolutionary and changed the way heavy machinery and long distance transport worked. In 1893, he published a paper describing an engine with combustion within a cylinder, "the internal combustion engine" In 1894, he filed for a patent for his new invention, dubbed the diesel engine and he was almost killed by his engine when it exploded but he proved that fuel could be ignited without a spark.
By 1912, a year before Diesel died in a mysterious drowning on his way to London, more than 70,000 diesel engines were running around the world. Trains were next and after World War II, trucks and buses started using diesel power. Nowadays in the automotive market diesel is a major player worldwide, it represents more than half the European new car market.

Now even bigger: The Fiat 500L MPV
MOTORS IN THE NEWS Fiat 500 Goes XL. Here comes another Fiat 500, but this one is the new 500L MPW 7 seater, following on from the 500L (large) and is due to go on sale early next year. The new 7 seater has the same styling as the standard car and the same wheelbase but it increases its length with an extra 20cm over hang to fit a third row of seats. Fiat’s design director Roberto Giolito said “The 500L will become a family and a sub-brand for Fiat, all of the seats in the 7 seater will tip and fold flat. This car will appeal to a different market than the current 5 seater." “We looked at doing a 500 Estate like the old Giardiniera, but it ended up very complex so our next step is to do a lifestyle vehicle with a 4x4 look.” With this new introduction it confirms that Fiat is expanding the 500 range, to keep up with what BMW has done with the MINI.
F1 Not For Sale. A businessman has turned down a multi-million pound offer to buy his F1 number plate. Afzal Kahn paid a record-breaking £440,000 for the plate in January 2008 which he bought from Essex County Council. The Council spent the money on a Pass Plus driving scheme to develop the skills of young people. Mr Khan, who owns luxury vehicle company Khan Design in Essex, flat out refused the recent offer, reported to be more than £6m. He believes the plate will only increase in value. The F on the plate represents cars registered in Essex, with F1 being the first plate to be issued by the Essex County Register of Motors in 1904. A spokesman for the businessman said “Mr Kahn has no interest in selling F1, which is his favourite plate. Cherished number plates, unlike property or other investments, tend not to fluctuate in value, they only go up. It really shouldn’t be a shock to people that the number plate is worth millions of pounds.” You may remember that the CCT did a Top Ten of most expensive number plates a couple of years ago and F1 was top of the pile. Touring Car Legends. A new three-part documentary series has been commissioned by ITV4 from producers Gaucho Productions. 'Touring Car Legends' will look back at the history of touring car racing in Britain, mixing archive footage with bespoke interviews with key drivers, team members and motor sport pundits. It will tell the story of the British Touring Car Championship from its beginnings in the 1950s through the major shake-ups of the 1980s and the so-called golden years of mainstream popularity in the early 1990s, to the cars and characters that make the Hello championship neighbours! what it is today. THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MOTOR RACING FESTIVAL 26-28 JULY 2013 The Silverstone Classic smashed all records this year, with over 90,000 fans coming to watch the historic racing from cars of all eras from 90 years of motorsport history. With a record number of 1113 entries for the 24 races, the Silverstone Classic lived up to the hype as it maintained its reputation as the biggest race meeting ever staged in the world. You can see the all photos and race results at www.silverstoneclassic.com and look out for an hour special from the show on ITV4 at 9pm (Spanish time) on Monday 9 September. It will be repeated over Christmas too.

As well as racing , more than 8000 classic cars were on static display, including Aston Martin marking its centenary on Saturday while the UK’s largest gathering of Lamborghinis, more than 80 models celebrated the Italian supercar company’s 50th birthday. Music was put on Friday and Saturday evening featuring ‘Stars from The Commitments’ and legendary group ‘The Hollies’. A special dinner also took place to honour the 50th anniversary of Jim Clark’s first world championship.

Young Michael Lyons did the double in the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship races, taking the win on both Saturday and Sunday. His RAM Williams FW07 was in the races representing the Classic’s most recent era of F1, dating back to the 70s and 80s, now hot news as we await the release of the film ´Rush´ on the 20th of this month. To celebrate 50 years of the 911, Porsche hoped to get 911 911's on parade. On the day there were actually 1208, setting a world record in the process. Heading up the convoy was former F1 driver and five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell MBE and Richard Attwood, winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours for Porsche in 1970. Owners drove the majority of the cars, which featured all models; Carrera, RS, RSR, GT, Speedster, as well as Targa and Turbo variants. The parade raised funds for the Hope for Tomorrow cancer charity.

French driver Nic Minassian smashed the Classic lap record in the purple Ross Brawn-designed Jaguar XJR14 on his way to the Group C victory. After the opening Group C race was cancelled on Saturday due to torrential rain, fans lined the circuit to watch Sunday’s spectacular of the famous 1980s Le Mans cars in livery you wouldn't see in modern races. It is the sole-surviving XJR14 and set a new lap record of 1:46.712s to beat the previous record by more than a second. “To be given a car like this to drive, and at an event like this, is just pure joy,” a grinning Minassian said after exiting the race-winning Jaguar.

As with all Motor Shows, the manufacturers tease us with sketches and rumours about what they are bringing to the show. The biannual Frankfurt Motor Show is the same and we have a little look at what we can expect at this giant of a show. Kia
Kia are set to unveil a superminisized concept car, which, according to Kia "hints at a possible future B-segment contender" and features "intriguing elements not always associated with smaller cars."
Pimp My Toyota will unveil a 400hp Yaris Yaris Hybrid-R supermini concept after dedicating its appearance at the show to "the presentation of hybrid technology". Suzuki iV-4
Audi have released these design sketches, so we think they are likely to debut a limited/small run production-ready Quattro. Three years on from the concept shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, that was built as an anniversary present to celebrate 30 years of Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive system.
Suzuki will show their iV-4 compact crossover concept, it's like a Nissan Juke, fun and funky and will be available in two and four-wheel drive.

Royal Mail Launches British Motor Industry Stamps A special set of stamps celebrating six much-loved British cars are now on sale in the UK, featuring stylish and world-renowned models. The first class stamps feature a 1961 Jaguar E-Type, a 1962 MG MGB, a 1963 Aston Martin DB5, a 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, a 1968 Morgan Plus 8 and a 1976 Lotus Esprit.
Royal Mail tracked down the privately-owned vehicles, all in almost prestine condition and they were then photographed by esteemed car photographer James Mann.
Also launched were a collection of first class stamps of 'British Auto Legends Workhorses', featuring the Morris Minor Van in Royal Mail livery, the Austin FX4 London Taxi, the Ford Anglia 105E Police car (from which the term 'panda car' was first coined due to the patches of colour) and the Land Rover Defender 110, a favourite of the British Army. Andrew Hammond, director of stamps and collectibles at Royal Mail, said: "These cars are classic in every sense and we are delighted to be bringing a reminder of these iconic motor cars to the nation's doorsteps."
Special first day of issue postmarks were made to celebrate the release of the stamps.

Romain Grosjean was squeezed off the track by Sergio Perez on lap 8, which resulted in Sergio getting a drive-through penalty. Lewis was first to pit on lap 12 but was then passed by Fernando after he had made his stop, Lewis just couldn’t match the speed of the Ferrari. Sebastian pitted and had an 8 second lead over Fernado in second. Kimi Raikkonen had brake trouble and had to retire halfway through the race, which ultimately knocked him out of the top three in the standings. Paul di Resta also retired after a tap from Pastor Maldonado Williams who had been battling with Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez. Pastor was handed a ten-second stop-go penalty by the stewards for causing the incident.

60 Years of Toy Cars I'm sure we have all had our own collection of Matchbox cars in our childhood and I would bet that most of you can still remember the specific cars, such was the love of these minature toys. My first was an Army Truck, which was hard as nails. The company is celebrating 60 years of making the die-cast model cars, which are so well crafted and lasted a lifetime, no matter how many knocks and bumps they received. The first model was designed in 1952 by self-trained engineer Jack Odell for his daughter to take to school. The school only allowed children to bring in toys that could fit inside a matchbox, so he crafted a scaled-down steamroller that did. It was a huge success and his daughters classmates all wanted their own ‘matchbox car’.
Jack Odell and partners Leslie and Rodney Smith formed Lesney products, London in 1953 and the first series of models were produced for sale. Their first major sales success was the million-selling Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Coach. Since then more than three billion Matchbox miniature die-cast vehicles have been produced, with the biggest seller being the Model A Ford miniature scale. To commemorate the anniversary, Matchbox has released a new collection of 24 vehicles, taken from all eras in its history. The most expensive Matchbox toy car was a one-off Seagrave Meanstick, a fire engine that was crafted in 18-carat gold, with 24 rubies, four golden sapphires and six diamonds. It was was created 10 years ago to commemorate the Matchbox 50th anniversary. It sold for £17,500.

espite the heat, crowds of people and over 70 Classic cars filled the display area with lots of beautiful and shiny motors. I expect you have all noticed how our modern cars have grown bigger wider and dare I say fatter? Take a look at the photo of the Fiat 500s above; the original (in amazing condition) and the new one. Also present was a lovely Mini Cooper, complete with tyres on the roof (possible air brake?). Copied of course by the Land Rover, again with tyres on the roof, a go any where, any time, vehicle.
VW were well represented with everything from Golfs, Karmann Ghia, Beetles, etc but new was a beautiful Red Metallic VW 411 (made 1968-1973). It had many new and revolutionary features and finally broke the VW Beetle mould. Never seen another one, have you? Phoenix Car Club

Ride 7: San Francisco On a hot day in August, 11 of us met at San Pedro and, once 'Prince Rob' had woken up 'sleeping beauty' with a kiss; (Martin had arrived early and lay down on the floor of the Petrol station forecourt and GONE TO SLEEP?!!) we set off down the autovia. El Algar, La Union, Cartagena and Canteras. The road up over the mountain was as good as always and we stopped off for the obligatory photos at the viewing point just past the summit. Down the mountain and a stop in Isla Plana for refreshments. From there we headed along the coast towards Mazarron. Just past Mazarron there's a great little back road (it's actually a continuation of the N332 but is hardly used anymore due to numerous autovias and other routes!). It twists and turns through some fabulous 'wild west' like scenery and landscapes. Aguillas and a fuel stop in San Juan de los Terreros. Then the final push to San Francisco. San Francisco was a lot smaller than it looks in all those "arty" photos.. Apparently the bay had dried up and the bridge had been sold to a Russian oligarch who has lost interest in the English football club he owns! What we did have was a San Francisco sign for corny but fun photos, a school, a park (very nice too for doing park stuff in!) and THE biggest newest fire station yet seen in southern Spain! The rumor is the mayor's house nearly burnt down two years ago, hence the European funded "International Rescue Centre". Very Thunderbirds! If you ever happen to be on or have anything on fire, get down to San Francisco; they'll sort you out in a jiffy!

Afterwards we had a very nice and VERY CHEAP lunch nearby (6euros for drinks and food for TWO!!). A reluctant (but necessary due to roadworks!) use of the AP7 saw us take the exit for the RM02 and another stop in Cuevas de los Reyolls. Marc Marquez took his third consecutive win, winning all the American races this season. He started on pole but fell behind Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa. He caught up with them, overtaking on Laps 9 and 13 respectively. Pedrosa took second place on the penultimate lap and held it to the finish with Lorenzo in third. It was the first podiums for the pair for two months and still are both nursing broken collarbones. Valentino Rossi finished in fourth.

Marc Marquez made MotoGP history by becoming the first rookie ever to claim five victories in his maiden season. It was a thrilling race as Jorge Lorenzo took the lead, but Marquez stayed with him and took the lead. They swapped places a few times before Marquez made the move stick with four laps to go. Dani Pedrosa was on a charge and over took Lorenzo before hunting down Marquez, but he ran out of track and took second just three tenths of a second behind his team mate. Valentino Rossi took fourth again. Marquez now leads the championship 26 points ahead of Pedrosa and 44 in front of Lorenzo.
