THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2017 Formula One Lewis Hamilton has all but clinched the Formula 1 Championship following a string of near perfect results with main rival Sebastian Vettel struggling to keep up in his Ferrari. In Malaysia it was Max Verstappen who took victory on the day after his 20th birthday and gave Red Bull their second race win of the season.
MotoGP The Japan round of the GP championship was a mighty affair on a wet track with a magnificent tussle being fought out between Marquez and Dovizioso. For lap after lap they diced on a track which threatened to spit them out at any moment but they mastered the conditions and it was Dovi on the Ducati who led across the line and is now hard on the heels of the Honda Hamilton extended his championship lead with just 11 points separating them. by finishing second while Vettel drove a blinding race from 20th and last on the grid Marc Marquez is within touching distance to finish 4th , just behind the second Red of the World title after victory in Australia Bull of Ricciardo. Ferrari woes continue while his championship rival Andrea with Raikkonen’s car being pushed off the Dovizioso could only manage 13th place second slot on the grid while Mercedes and after a poor race during which he ran wide Hamilton glide serenely towards the title. on lap 2 and never recovered. In Japan, Ferrari once more shot themselves in the foot when Vettel retired with a sick engine reportedly caused by a broken spark plug. Hamilton won the race and was followed home by the two Red Bulls of Verstappen and Ricciardo and left Suzuka with a 59 point championship lead. The US Grand Prixturned out to be a great race with lots of overtaking and close racing despite (or maybe because of ) the pre event razzmatazz. Vettel led initially but was soon passed by Hamilton who went on to win and, once again, extend his championship lead. Lots of controversy at the end when Verstappen, who had driven the race of a lifetime from 15th on the grid, passed Raikkonen for third place on the last lap but was then demoted by the stewards for exceeding track limits while executing the overtake.Young Max was fuming afterwards as was team boss, Christian Horner, and you would have to agree with them that there is a large dose of inconsistency where this particular penalty is concerned. Mercedes, meanwhile, scored enough points to secure the constructors championship but Lewis must wait a little longer to claim his fourth driver’s crown.
Up front there was a superb battle between Marquez, Rossi, Vinales and Ianonne with the Honda finally getting the better of the two Yamahas. Rossi later complained that he could have challenged for victory if Ianonne had not raced so hard against him! Forgive my ignorance but isn’t that what it’s all about?
WRC As in F1 and Moto GP the destination World Rally Championship is practically done and dusted. Sebastien Ogier has not dominated like he did last year in the VW but has done enough in his M Sport Ford Fiesta to eke out a commanding lead with just two rounds remaining. He had no answer to Kris Meeke in the RACC Rally Spain but was satisfied to take the runner up spot and score while his rival, Thierry Neuville, suffered retirement and a no-score. Ott Tanak was third in the other Fiesta and moved into second place in the championship. On the final weekend of the month and after we have gone to print, three events take place which will more than likely see three new world champions crowned. The Mexican Grand Prix, the Malaysian Moto GP and Rally GB in Wales all happen within a few hours of each other and will ensure that ,I for one, will be glued to the telly! RALLY RACC. RALLY DE ESPANA 2017 by Richard O’Rourke
Our local round of the World Rally Championship, the RALLY RACC, took place over the weekend of 6-8 October and provided the platform for Kris Meeke to banish the misfortune of previous events and show what he and his Citroen C3 are truly capable of. Meeke held third place after the opening day on gravel stages and was well placed take advantage of the C3’s tarmac potential on Saturday and Sunday. He was 3 seconds off the lead on Friday night but by the end of the opening stage on Saturday held a 9 second advantage and he stretched this lead to a massive 28 second gap by the finish on Sunday afternoon. Behind him, and mindful of the battle forthe championship, Sebastien Ogier and Thierry Neuville were having their own private race and it was the Frenchman who came out on top, finishing in second place, while the Belgian came away pointless after his Hyundai suffered steering failure having hit a rock.
His team mates Dani Sordo and Andreas Mikkelsen also retired with the very same problem which indicates an inherent weakness in the i20’s front suspension/steering set-up. Ogiers team mate, Ott Tanak, took third place and all but clinches the manufacturer’s title for M Sport Ford. Juho Hanninen salvaged fourth place for Toyota while team mates Latvala and Lappi both retired, Latvala suffering a broken sump, Lappi coming to a sudden stop against a barrier. The development of the Citroen C3 has been slow and sometimes painful but following input from former champion Sebastian Loeb, who recently tested the car and confirmed the misgivings of both Meeke and Mikkelsen, it looks as though they are on the right track at last and it now remains to be seen if Citroen can attract Ogier to join the team for the 2018 season.

2017 is winding up to be another year of change in the motor industry. Hemmed in by concerns about the motorcar’s impact on human health and the environment, and with rapidly evolving technological change (and new disruptive players) challenging the very basis of its global business models, the motor industry is undergoing dramatic and rapid change.
The relentless advance of electrification While it is certainly premature to write the obituary of the internal combustion (ICE) engine, in the medium term you will see more and more electrification brought into new cars. The UK government this year announced a potential plan to ban ICE motors by 2040, following on from last year’s announcement by Norway that it will do the same by 2025.
Autonomous cars – a complicated matter You can go, right now, and buy a Mercedes-Benz E-Class or a Volvo S90 that will, at the touch of a button, take over steering, braking, and acceleration for a short period of time. The 2017 E-Class will even change lanes for you at the touch of an indicator. But 2017 has seen cautious statements about the arrival of the fully driverless car as a mainstream vehicle from various sources. In the coming years, the first driverless cars will arrive, probably in small cities that have the infrastructure that will support their technological requirements. Extremely complex matters of ethics and liability need to be thrashed out between governments and manufacturers before the autonomous car is a widely available option.
Diesel’s fall from grace Diesel cars were popularised by attractive tax regimes around the world, and their proven fuel-efficiency. However, recent research has established that more than three million people a year die prematurely due to outdoor air pollution. Diesel fumes - especially in European cities – play a significant role in this. European uptake of diesel technology has seen oil-burners make up more than half of some countries’ fleet, and this, researchers say, means nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions kill about 75 000 Europeans prematurely every year.
Split-spoke diamond-cut wheels A welcome trend in exterior automotive design of late is split-spoke diamond-finished rims. All the rage at the premium end of the automotive world, this adds great dynamic, textured design in an area once abandoned to bling. Great examples can be seen on the newly launched Range Rover Velar, various Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG wheels, the new Audi A5 and on the Rolls-Royce Ghost. The set adorning the recently revealed new Audi A7 Sportback are spectacular.

Another thing that caught my attention was the breadth of those attending. No, I don´t mean they were all fat! Can you say "fat" nowadays? Or is it "dietarily challenged"? LOL! Anyway, what I mean is, the demography of the clients. As expected there were fair few "youngsters" in their leather, Power Ranger suits, but they were by no means the majority. Two female riders were present, one of whom told me she wanted to "...learn how to carry more corner speed!" Gulp!!! Miguel, on a very nice Ducati was doing the day with his wife ( Chaco ) as pillion. Chaco later said she was much more comfortable now the instructors had shown Miguel how to use the brakes correctly, he looked a little sheepish at this but nodded his agreement! LOL A 19yr old informed me he had "only" been riding since he was 5??! And one rider in the "fast" group was particularly notable as he had to have someone help him hold the bike up when stationary...to be fair, he will grow a bit as his 10th birthday is next week!!!!! Watch out Marqueth. Following registration there´s a formal safety talk, where everyone is left in no doubt that the emphasis of the day is safety and the rules of the day are explained.MAC have their own mechanic, Fran, an ex Moto3 Pit mechanic; who maintains all the course bikes as well as checking all riders´ machines for safety before they are allowed to begin.At registration, the riders are placed in groups and talking to participants it´s clear that they have a good selection process as everyone felt happy in their allotted group; although it´s made clear if necessary the instructors will move people.

Ok, so if you cast your minds back all the way to last month´s issue....I was telling you about my meeting with Victor from MAC. Well, September came and as promised, so did an invite to observe one of their courses at Cartagena circuit. An early rise and a brisk ride, saw me arrive at the Track in time for "inscription" or "registration" as we call it. My first impressions? I was impressed! LOL!! Sorry! I won´t do that again, I promise. LOL. An orderly queue, eager staff that knew exactly what they were doing......are we still in Spain? Hahaahaha...only kidding.

Safety talk finished, next up is a well presented, concise "theory" class. Here the science behind braking, cornering and balance are explored with the use of visual aids, videos and humor. Questions are not just welcomed, but encouraged and the whole thing is done in a very professional yet informal manner.Throughout the day, from 830 till after 6pm: there is a professional photographer at the track and photos can be purchased after viewing them on screens in Pit control. Onboard videos shot by the instructors are also available if you want to show your friends just how bad you WERE!? LOL!! Talking to clients, I was taken by how many Repeat attenders there were. It says a lot about the quality of the courses when many were there for their third, fourth and even fifth time! A lot of time and thought has gone into the formatting and it shows. Everyone (yes, I spoke to ALL of them!) enjoyed the day immensely and stated that they had learned something new...even the repeaters. Victor assures me that arrangements can be made for those who only speak English. And after watching these guys, I´m sure their enthusiasm and dedication would also help overcome any language barriers anyway.I can wholeheartedly recommend this to ALL riders of ANY level/ability.At the very least you´ll have an enjoyable day, experience some track time, meet some great people and have a good laugh. You never know, you MAY even LEARN something, I know I did! Stay safe El Guiri
