Editors Notes:
On the 1st of July we were delighted to collaborate with the previous owners and take on the Costa Car Trader. As a family of car fanatics living on the costa this opportunity was a no brainer. We are excited to bring you fresh content whilst still maintaining the things you know and love about this magazine. We have loved every minute so far and we strive to continue growing the magazine making it available to more and more readers. It’s been a pleasure meeting all the advertisers, business owners and car enthusiasts. We’re also very thankful for all the hard work of the content producers and everyone who helped bring the magazine to where it is today. A special thank you to all our readers, we are always open to suggestions and encourage you to submit your unique car stories to us. Quentin Van Deutekom & Shana Walker

MOTORS IN THE NEWS
Ford unveiled the 2018 Mustang Ford unveiled the 2018 Mustang during the Detroit auto show. It gains a more aggressive look that includes new hood vents and an optional spoiler. With its new optional "drag strip" mode, it will be the fastest pony car ever, going from 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds, WOW! But Ford has not commented on pricing or fuel economy. The Mustang goes on sale this autumn , it will also gain horsepower and torque over the outgoing model, thanks in part to the automaker's new 10-speed transmission. Horsepower for the 5.0-litre V-8 engine jumps to 460 from 435, and torque increases to 420 pounds-feet from 400. Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar Codenamed variously X1, R50 and Project One by insiders, the AMG hypercar is practically a street-legal F1 racer but with two seats instead of one, an extreme six-cylinder engine with e-motor assistance, and a power-to-weight ratio approaching one kilogramme per horsepower The halo car is set to develop 1020bhp from its 1.6-litre F1-derived hybrid powertrain, with an approximate 20-mile all-electric range also promised. They anticipate a price stretching to a cool £2.4 million .
Aston Martins revolutionary hypercar the Valkyrie has had an evolutionary design tweak to hone its aerodynamic abilities. Formerly dubbed the AM-RB 001, it’s the product of a collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing. Deliveries begin in 2019, a year later than originally planned, and it’ll set you back between £2m and £3m Surprisingly, up to 175 Valkyries will be made, with production taking place at Aston’s Gaydon plant. The company says that the production run will include between 99-150 road cars and prototypes, and 25 track-only models. You'll have to wait until 2019 to get your hands on one, if that's possible. iness Your bbues here! could g out to Reachain ds of cnadr thous snia ts a u enth tenstial po ! customers

With over sixty stunning motors from the six biggest manufacturing nations: Great Britain,Germany, Italy, France, Japan and the USA which means there is something for everyone. Representing Britain, the Aston Martin's Vulcan and a 2004 Formula 1 BAR Honda from Japan, also a 1931 US Stock Car will be some of the highlights.
At the heart of the festivities is the CarFest Paddock where you can see all of the awesome autos that will be in action as well as exclusive interviews with the dynamic drivers. There are marques, loads of legendary machines where a fun filled day is guaranteed. The Government has for a long time pushed us into diesel cars because they are generally more economical than petrols so they produce less CO2 and hence cause less climate change. Today’s strategy says that NOx and particulate pollution is a local issue. So the Government is pushing responsibility for cleaning up local emissions onto local councils and city mayors. Local councils will be provided with up to £3 billion in new funding “to clean up dirty air on roads”, according to a government spokesperson. So what does it mean for the cars we love? Well, 2040 is 23 years away. We have little idea what sort of lowemission propulsion will be available by then. Remember, just 10 years ago the only electric car on sale in Britain was the G-Wizz. Five years later the Tesla Model S went into production. By 2020 there will be a widespread fast-charging network along Europe’s motorways. It’s likely that by 2025 or so, for nearly everyone, an electric car will be as practical and as cheap to own as a petrol or diesel. As well as smoother, quieter and livelier. It’s also possible that more hydrogen stations will make fuel-cells more practical. In other words, combustion-engined cars probably won’t need outlawing by 2040, because no-one will want them. No-one, maybe, except us petrolheads. But remember how we used to think all hybrids would be like the Prius, until we got the Porsche 918. We used to think all EVs would be like the Leaf, until we got Tesla’s Ludicrous mode. We’re pretty poor at predicting the delights that car engineers will build for us next year, never mind in 23 years’ time 15 READ ON-LINE WWW.COSTACARTRADER.NET OR FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK
THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2017 Formula One The Austrian GP marked the first career victory for Valtteri Bottas and it could not have come at a more opportune time as it moved him into third place in the championship, a meagre 35 points behind leader, Vettel. Vettel himself finished second and opened the gap to Hamilton to 20 points while Daniel Ricciardo kept up his remarkable run of podiums to finish third. Hamilton took a penalty for a gearbox change and started eighth on the grid but converted that to a fourth place finish which, in terms of damage limitation, was as much as he could do. Verstappen and Alonso retired very early on, the flying Dutchman mimicking his Spanish colleague in terms of bad luck which will hopefully change as the second half of the season approaches. The British GP took place at Silverstone amid controversy that the BRDC have cancelled their contract with the GP organisers and will run their last F1 race at the Northamptonshire circuit in 2019. Donington are not interested and Brands Hatch is not fit for purpose so no British GP in 2020? Let’s see what can be done. Anyway, on the track it was all about tyre wear and the Ferraris suffered most and lost second place and possibly even the win when they pushed the Pirellis too fast and too far. Bottas and Ricciardo both took penalties (cursed things and should be scrapped) and Hamilton took pole and from there led the race, never to be passed and in doing so closed the championship gap to Vettel to just one point. Bottas made an excellent recovery from ninth on the grid to finish second while Raikkonen took third after a
a late tyre change. A last lap puncture for Vettel also meant a last gasp pit stop and he took fifth behind Verstappen. Mercedes have come back strong after a shaky start and Ferrari have stood still after a promising start. The Italians need to up their game if they hope to make a fight of it in the second half of the season. Poor old Martin Brundle took ill just before the start of the race and was rushed to the Silverstone medical centre and just as his Sky TV colleagues were about to present him with a trophy marking the 20th anniversary of his Grid Walk. Good news is that he is making a good recovery and will be back on the grid very soon. MotoGP The German round of the Moto GP Championship threw up another unexpected result with relative newcomer and unknown, Jonas Folger, finishing second, having led the race for a long time on his Tech 3 Yamaha. He was eventually passed by Marc Marquez who now takes the championship lead ahead of long time leader, Vinales (Yamaha) and Dovizioso (Ducati). Dani Pedrosa continued his good run of form finishing third with Vinales and Rossi fourth and fifth. In the overall standings the top five are separated by just 26 points so, as we enter the summer break, it is all set up for a cracking second half of the season. Honda, Yamaha and Ducati have never been closer and it is anyone’s guess as to who will come out on top.
FWR - €uro Cars www.fwreurocars.com
WRC The Rally Poland round of the World Rally Championship was one of the best ever with the lead changing hands 10 times over the 23 competitive special stages. In the end it was Thierry Neuville in his Hyundai who took the honours after Ott Tanak crashed while holding the lead with 3 stages to go. Neuville was content to sit in second and afterwards admitted that he was not prepared to chase Tanak because the Estonian was driving at, or over, the limit and so it proved. Hayden Paddon was 2nd in the other Hyundai with Seb Ogier 3rd in the Ford. Citroen, having dropped Kris Meeke for this rally, fared no better with replacement, Mikkelsen, finishing 10th. Meeke is back in harness for Finland where he won last year in the old car while rumours of unpredictable handling still surround the new C3. The Finnish GP will tell a lot and, with nowhere to hide, the mystery as to whether it is the drivers or the car may finally be resolved.
WRC Poland
Formula E Sam Bird and DS Virgin Racing smashed the New York ePrix after winning both races. Which leaves him in 4th position on the drivers standings and it kept Bird in with a mathematical chance of the title. Even though the championship leader was excluded from the results on Saturday due to illegal tyre pressure on his Renault is still leading at the moment. The next race is R11 / 29 JULY in MONTREAL, CA.

Sam Bird NY
A Car... That’s a SHED! by Bruce Rowbotham This Shed was certainly turning heads when I saw it parked in ASDA supermarket car park in York this summer. It is officially recognised as the World's Fastest Shed, having been timed at 88.086mph and it's all the work of owner/driver Kevin Nicks, appropriately from Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. Kevin is a gardener and mechanic and combined his talents on this project that began life as a standard V6 engined Volkswagen Passat 4motion that was almost 20 years old and his intention was to convert it into a promotional vehicle, available for hire. Over a period of 7 months the original bodywork was stripped and a steel 3mm box section frame was built over the floorpan and bulkhead, to take the wood plank cladding and roof. The interior still boasts leather seats, electric windows, air-con and central locking.
The Shed has a total weight of a little over 2 tonnes and the total spend was £5000. Once completed the project almost died when the shed was presented for examination by the DVLA, the agency that deals with registration and road worthiness of vehicles. The examiner, armed with his 299 page Manual of Guidance put one obstacle after another in the way and in the end Kevin resorted to an appeal for help to his local MP who at the time happened to be Prime Minister David Cameron. The Prime Minister replied with a hand signed letter supporting Kevin and also sent a letter to the head of the DVLA who finally agreed to test the shed. After an exhaustive test lasting 6 hours it passed and was allocated the registration mark Q710 LBW in place of the original registration mark of the Passat. The V5 Registration Document issued by the DVLA actually records the make as “Fastest Shed.” On a timed run at Elvington Airfield, York the Shed achieved a new Guinness World Record reaching 88.086mph and broke the previous Fastest Shed record set by TV Star and Mechanic Ed China when he achieved 58.41mph - appropriately set on 1st April 2011.

Technology In Cars Exciting new tech features you should get in your new car. While self-driving cars may not be available for the masses yet, the carmakers are decking their new vehicles out with some innovative technologies. Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication is basically exactly what it sounds like. It's a type of communication technology that lets cars talk to other vehicles, this could get me into a bit of bother on the roundabouts here in the summer. Stay connected with WiFi and LTE 4G basically turns your car into a hotspot, allowing for you to connect several devices to the network. Which like or it not its become a necessity in our daily lives. Voice control is almost a necessity in our always connected world. It lets you do things like send texts and make phone calls by simply pushing down a button and speaking.
Back-up cameras are one of the greatest innovations to come to automobiles. Oh yes indeed no more sign posts sneaking up from behind. Night vision is thermal imaging that shows the driver if an animal or person is nearby by displaying their presence on the instrument cluster. Semi-autonomous driving systems, like Tesla's Autopilot, are slowly but surely making their way to market in newer vehicles. These systems let your car handle steering and braking while driving on the highway in certain conditions. I know it seems like a new and improved cruise control, I prefer to have control of the car I'm driving. READ ON-LINE WWW.COSTACARTRADER.NET OR FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK

RENT-A-CAR MADNESS By Charlotte Godden
Ah Spanish summers... the sun is shining, the sea is glistening and just as you’re about to doze off… ‘MUUUUUM, YOU FORGOT THE PIC-NIC!!!’ So you head back to your family car thinking you’ll be back in no time, the house is only a few minutes away after all… The first thing you will experience is third degree burns on any body part which comes into contact with your seatbelt followed by a deep sense of regret for specifically selecting leather seats. Was it really worth avoiding irreversible stains that you could probably learn to overlook eventually? This is such an ordeal that you haven’t even had time to register the fact that you’re basically an oven baked chip inside your once “comfortable” car. At this point you resemble the ridiculously overpriced ice lolly you will probably be conned into purchasing later, melting everywhere. And you’ve come to a standstill. Is there a traffic jam? Nope, just a disorientated holiday maker in his or her rent a car, blissfully unaware of the pic-nic mission taking place. They’re braking, yet again. You take a deep breath trying to keep your cool, or perhaps ‘regain your cool’ would be a better phrase. 20
So you’re finally doing more than 20km/hr, until they stop. In the middle of the road. Oh wait, it’s alright, they’ve put their hazards on. All is forgiven and everyone is on the same wavelength. The aircon has kicked in and you’re getting your mojo back. The horn becomes tempting as the driver infront of you outweighs all his options for the fifth time. But you restrain yourself and you’re finally moving again, towards a roundabout. Potentially the busiest roundabout for miles. You must remeber to use your energy sparingly, it’s a marathon not a sprint, and most of all control your road rage. So you’re at the front. Oh hang on, you’re stuck, behind the rent a car people now think you’re in a convoy with. Go...go...go...could have gone then...and again. They edge forward slightly and finally they’re away. You can see the new found confidence in their eyes, all these new possibilities, is there nothing this driver can’t conquer? Closely followed by no sense of urgency. Whatsoever. The roundabout becomes an anomaly, it is exempt from the wonders of time. You need to come off at the first exit but your rent a car pal has other plans. He’s in what he believes is the right lane performing a maneuver that can only be described as completely stupid. He has now stopped, yet again, blocking your path. Only this time he’s on a roundabout. The busiest roundabout of the area. You just can’t control it anymore… I think you get the picture.
Part II There are many things in life, that are better in our heads. Getting from A to B on your “perfect” summer holiday is one of them. You’ve just landed and the heat smothers you, you want to like it but it literally, smothers you. You’re inside the airport now where the aircon is slightly above average, not quite potent enough to stop the sweat dripping in places you didn’t know it could.
Don’t forget.. Tell our advertisers where you saw them
Next stop, hire car office. You were promised a speedy service to get you on your way as quickly as possible however that was without taking the queue that you can’t see the start or end of into account. The kids are crying, the Mrs is moaning that this is the one thing you had to arrange and ‘you’ve made a right pig’s ear of this Jerry’. You’re feeling sour because you can’t remind her that she forgot the passports and then the baby’s bottle because she’s right, this is the one thing you had to organise. An eternity later… You’re surprised you haven’t completely lost the will to live, everyone’s in slightly less agressive spirits and you’re on your way to your beach front hotel room. Just as you’ve adjusted to operating an unfamiliar vehicle on what feels like the wrong side of the road, the GPS kicks in. It’s basically like having a second wife with less perks and more mood swings. The sentence ‘make a legal u turn’ resonates through the car for the third time becoming slightly more violent than the last. You decide to slow down to get your bearings only to realise this is a bad move amongst other drivers. As if the bright yellow sticker on the back of the car wasn’t bad enough you know you are living up to the stereotype of the rent a car driver. Panic sets in. People are ovetaking you at this point, but you have come to terms with it. Some of them even look in your direction with pure hatred in their eyes. You decide it is easier to play the oblivious card and don’t even pay attention. Finally, you merge onto a dual carriageway and you become comfortable with the fact that you’re cruising, cruising through life without a care in the World. Even your second wife is becoming more forgiving and has accepted that as long as you’re moving forwards, however slow it may be, you’re progressing on your journey. Just as you’re reaching the peak of your philosophical potential, your real wife wakes up and decides she’s going to be useful. And by useful she clearly means bossy and irritable. Now both your wives are talking at once completely contradicting eachother but somehow it’s still your fault. Eventually you end up on the right road with an eta of five minutes or potentially fifteen if you’re being completely realistic. You can see the beach but apparently it’s the wrong beach, so you decide to slow down to take a proper look… Basic cognitive skills kick in again and you realise you’ve come to a complete standstill. In the middle of the road.
You listen to your real wife telling you to move forward. However, your second wife is adamant you must park up. As you weigh up the pros and cons of listening to each wife time stands still. You come to the conclusion that your real wife is the one you’ll have to deal with for most of your time here so you approach the roundabout ahead… It’s terrifying, more terrifying than you could ever imagine. It’s complete anarchy so you stare at it for a while expecting it to disappear. You edge forwards several times until finally someone slows down slightly to let you in, you decide to take the plunge. All you can think about is how blessed you truly are to be on this TERRIFYING ROUNDABOUT. Your second wife is so angry she’s telling you to turn around, your real wife can’t even look at you and you realise that yet again, you’ve come to a halt. Except this time you’re in everyone’s way, there’s no going back and well… You know the rest.

A Funny Thing Happened.... by Richard O’Rourke In a series of articles Richard O’Rourke recalls some amusing incidents which occurred during his time as roving photographer and reporter for Motoring News in the 1980s and ‘90s.
The Modball Rally This month the funny incident does not hark back to my time wandering around Europe and shooting rally cars with my camera but to an incident which happened just a few short weeks ago here on the Costa Blanca. It all started in the pub (where else) where I was chatting to my pal, Justin, and when the conversation turned to cars, as it inevitably does, he mentioned that he was babysitting a rather special Jaguar of the XK-R breed. Turned out that his friend, TJ Crosbie, had recently taken part in the Modball Rally which ran from London to Ibiza. Now, before you say anything, I agree that an island in the Med is hardly a suitable place to finish a rally but read on and it will become a little clearer (I think)! The Modball Rally is not the kind of event which would normally capture my attention as it is essentially a weeklong high speed motoring party, largely populated by a shower of Hurrah Henrys with more money than sense and whose daddies give them free reign to spend their money as foolishly as they can. The aforementioned TJ does not come into this category as he is a sensible gent who simply wanted to take wife Andrea on a bit of a holiday while indulging himself in his passion for nice cars. And so he purchased a second hand Jaguar XK-R with some nice bits added under the bonnet bringing the poke up to “S” standard (540 bhp) and treating it to a set of Pirelli P Zeros of huge proportions (335/40-20 at the front and 385/35-20 at the rear) in order to harness the power and make sure it would stay glued to the road and stop should the gendarme or policía stick out their hands. The rally started in London and travelled via the channel to Luxembourg, Geneva, Monaco. and Barcelona before catching a ferry to Ibiza where the proper party would take place. Anyway, enough of that silliness. When the car landed once more on mainland Spain, TJ had had enough of driving and asked Justin to mind the car until arrangements could be made
to deliver it back to it’s home in the UK. “Okey dokey” says Justin and that is where I come in. I was asked if I would fancy a drive and having hesitated for 0.3 milliseconds agreed that it would be a fine idea and I could also make it into a little story for your favourite Costa motoring mag. To say the car is quick is an understatement and is certainly the most powerful road car I have ever driven. Previous licence losers include a Porsche 911GT3 and Lexus IS F, both driven in Ireland and both very impressive in their own right. Where the Jag excelled was in it’s civility when driven slowly and it’s bonkers performance when asked to go somewhere in a hurry. The noise alone deserves an article to itself and I can only apologise to the good citizens of La Zenia, San Miguel and Las Colinas for any damage done to their sanity and eardrums. It is thunderous and magnificent and spine tingling and it's next to impossible to stay off the throttle so as to indulge in the V8 roar coming from the four drainpipes at the rear end. All this poke is transmitted to the road via an 8 speed auto box with manual paddle shift override and even in full auto the upshifts don’t happen until 4000 rpm by which time the speedo needle is dancing it’s way to very illegal figures. I have to admit to glancing at the clock at one stage and admiring my restrain until I realised that it was showing MPH and not the KPH that I am used to. Oops! The interior is very comfy and features seats which have adjustable sides which squeeze in to suit the size of the driver’s upper body.
The brakes are all you would expect but for high speed descents in the Alps I would prefer the option of ceramic discs as the standard steel items may not be up to the job of fade-free retardation but that’s being picky. Suspension was compliant at normal speeds but stiffened as required when being pushed and the best compliment I can pay it is that the large and relatively heavy car felt nearly as nimble as my MX5 on the twisty bits. A better car for a long trans-continental journey I could not imagine as it combines comfort, roominess, power and fun all in one package and without breaking the bank into the bargain. No figures are available for fuel economy as I don’t want to spoil the article and anyway I wasn’t paying! Thanks to Justin and TJ for the ride and if you want to do the Modball again next year I’ll be glad to drive it home for you. Have a look at Modball Rally 2017 on You Tube and you’ll see the madness for yourself.
