Oh, and also, this car is supposedly going to orbit Mars for a billion years. It is a step towards his goal of reducing the risk of human extinction by moving us all to Mars, eventually. As for January's launch, the Falcon Heavy is built to lift much more than just one Tesla out of the grasp of Earth's gravity: Its 27 Merlin engines can generate over 5 million pounds of thrust capable of sending a fully loaded 737 jetliner into orbit, according to the company. That much power easily makes it the most powerful rocket in operation today, rivaling the capabilities of the huge Saturn V rocket that sent astronauts to the moon and would later inspire a young Elon Musk.

We already know the eighth-generation Fiesta on which it’s based is a fantastic small car, offering more tech than ever without sacrificing handling fun. The ST is set to build on this with a new 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo in place of the old four-cylinder 1.6. BIG CATS ROAR IN FOR CHRISTMAS . The Hotel La Laguna in guardamar was the venue chosen to hold the Christmas meeting of the Jaguar Enthusiast Club on the Costa Blanca Spain . Most members only stayed one night as the party went on well into the early hours ,but a number of us decided to make it a weekend at the wonderful Spar and Golf Hotel where we were well looked after by the pleasant and helpful staff . After all the members had arrived the much loved jags were safely lined up in the secure Hotel car park as it was now time for their owners to prepare themselves for a night to remember. At 7 -o-clock in the evening we all met up for pre dinner drinks in the bar lounge before lining up for a photo shoot in the foyer of our members all dressed in there finery,and this enabled our new ( director gerente ) Mike Brook to say a few words concerning the formation of the Full Jaguar enthusiasts club where he let it be known that Dennis Wilson and Brenda Pike will be working along side of him . The meal was an enjoyable affair as the conversations and banter bounced from table to table ,then the night went on as members returned to the bar lounge where Brenda Pike and her husband MIke were thanked by appreciative fellow members for all of their time spent on organizing this special event . My first experience of a Fiat Panda was back in 1999, I was going away on my Narrow boat in England for about eight weeks on holiday, and where it was moored on the River Wey the parking was not very secure, so I had mentioned to a friend that I could do with an old car that if it was stolen or vandalised it would not matter, he said straight away that his friend was selling his Panda for ÂŁ200, so I was sorted as they say. On my return the car was all okay, and soon I started to fall in love for this simple little car, it did everything I asked of it and although not fast, it was fun. I sold that car some years later for ÂŁ350, and it still ran perfectly..........fast forward quite a few years later, I wanted a car in Spain, possibly another Panda and mentioned this to our good friends, Jan & Norm, who within days spotted this very sad looking Seat Panda 40,( it is a 1985 903cc model ) sitting at the side of the road for sale, which after a chat with the owner and a good look around the car was mine !
The car was very sound but tired, the drivers door was dented in so far it rubbed on the glass when wound up and down, the interior had the wrong seats fitted and the engine rattled quite a bit, so there was work to be done. First job was rebuilding the engine, which Den Wilson in the Phoenix Car Club did brilliantly for us, it turned out to be in very good order and only required a slight re-grind on the crank, new piston rings, cam chain etc. Then it was re-spray time, as always some things do not go to plan, as promises are not kept, but I am nearly happy with finished result. The last job was the interior, I managed to find an original pair of front seats which were then re-upholstered by a company in Los Montessinos, along with the rest of the interior, and what a brilliant job they did as well. The rest of the mechanics I have done myself, all new brakes front and rear, new wishbones and bushes, and a complete repaint on the underside......job done then ?, no, that's the fun of owning a classic car, there's always something to do.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2017 Motorsport Month Jan 2018 No action on track or special stage until the WRC kicks off again in Monte Carlo on the third weekend of January so let’s have a look back at the year that was and a glance at the crystal ball to see what’s in store for the coming year. M-SPORT Since the World Rally Championship is the first to get going let’s start with that and the news that Seb Ogier has signed for another year with M-Sport. He won the championship in 2017 but not in the convincing style with which he won during his VW days. The Fiesta is a good car but not a dominant one and it will take a bit more development before it is a sure fire winner. By now I was hoping to be writing about the Ford World Rally Team but the yanks with all the dollars are still sitting on the fence and as time passes by it seems more and more unlikely that they will put their name to the team so it will be left to Malcolm Wilson and his semi-private team to take up the challenge once again. Wilson has, once again, put all his effort into signing Ogier and there is very little money left in the pot to pay the other drivers and so (at the time of writing) Elfyn Evans is the only other Fiesta driver with a contract for 2018.
CITROEN. Citroen were expected to be the strongest challengers for championship victory last year but an ill-handling car and a frustrated and sometimes erratic Kris Meeke saw their effort dwindle. If they get their act together they could be untouchable in 2017. Driver line up remains the same with Breen, Lefevbre and Al Quassimi playing second fiddle to Meeke. Al Quassimi, by the way, is only there because he brings big sponsorship from Abu Dhabi and does well to get into the top ten stage times but needs must I suppose. I’ll bet Malcolm wouldn’t mind getting a call from one of his cousins right now! The C3WRC is regarded by many to be the quickest car out there and there is no doubting Meeke’s pace when he is on song. At the speed these guys are going confidence is everything and if Kris is given a car that handles as well on gravel as it does on asphalt then he will be hard to catch.
TOYOTA. Toyota had an unexpectedly good debut season with the Yaris. Tommi Makkinen’s team were hoping for a few podium places and then to mount a challenge in 2018 but Lappi’s dominant win in Finland changed all that and suddenly they were regarded as proper opposition. The addition of Ott Tanak to the team can do no harm except that, like Hyundai, they now have two Alpha males and it will be fascinating to see how Makkinen manages the in-team rivalry between Tanak and Jari-Matti Latvala, never mind the threat of the very quick Esapekka Lappi in the third car. NEXT MONTH we will take a look at the Formula 1 season ahead and try to see if anyone can mount a serious challenge to Mercedes. HYUNDAI. Hyundai had the best car and the best drivers if the statistics (number of stage wins throughout the season) are to be believed but a steering/suspension weakness let them down on too many occasions and, despite leading the championship for a long time, they allowed Ogier’s consistency WRC Poland to come out on top in the end. The car is undoubtedly fast and the only problem I see in the coming year is that Neuville and Mikkelsen may get in each others way in their effort to lift the title. Dani Sordo and Hayden Paddon share the number three car, neither driver likely to mount a serious challenge to the two main men.

The Morgan Car Company

If you are a classic car fan, then visiting the Morgan Car Company in Malvern, England for a factory tour represents probably the best 20 quid you can spend on a day out. It's not a high-tech sterile automated factory with robots and computer driven production lines, populated by figures dressed in corporate high-viz jackets and safety specs. Instead it's a step back in time to a small group of men and women working with traditional hand tools in a series of workshops that have barely changed for over 100 years. A factory tour typically starts in the cafe alongside the works with an informal chat from your guide. Visitors can photograph anything they see other than the specification sheet and owners name attached to the cars. There is a clearly defined walkway through the workshops and few “No Go” areas, so use common sense and good manners and you'll be fine.

The factory consists of 7 sheds set on a gentle slope. This is an advantage as the cars are pushed manually from shed to shed with the benefit of gravity as they roll from one stage to another. Assembly begins with a bare chassis made of metal (and not wood - as there are some who still perpetuate this myth!) and the first component attached is the petrol tank. The petrol cap is important as it carries the key/lock set for the car and the build sheet is also attached to the chassis. Each car is bespoke, the build sheet never leaves the car just like the hospital patients' clip board on their bed, it's regularly inspected and updated. As the chassis wends it's way from shed to shed it slowly begins to grow into a car. It seems odd to see a modern 4.8 litre V8 BMW engine with a 6 speed transmission being installed, then almost immediately the process steps back 100 years to see the bodywork being built. In scenes reminiscent of the old wood and metalwork shops from our schooldays, wooden frames made from ash are formed by hand before being clad in aluminium by craftsmen working by eye and judgement. After final and apparently unhurried fettling the bodywork is painted, with British Racing Green or Cream being the 2 most popular colours. Morgan will paint and trim the car in any colour you wish, but prefer customers to stick to the traditional palette. The interior trim takes about 30 hours as hides are cut and sewn on clattering sewing machines. One of the few modern methods used is for creating the wood veneer dash. A fine veneer is laid over a plywood form with cut outs for the instruments, glue is applied to both surfaces and they are pressed together and placed in a polythene bag. The air is drawn out of the bag by vacuum leaving the bag as a tight shrink fit and under this pressure a perfect fusion of a veneer on its backing is made. At every stage there are no more than 2 men working on the car, unlike the frenzy of activity in other factories, or around a Formula 1 car in the pit lane. The gentle peace is occasionally shattered by an un-silenced engine being started. This is because the exhaust and silencer system is the last part of the car to be fitted, otherwise it would impede access to other components during assembly and especially as a thorough undersealing of the car by hand is one of the final jobs. After a check over, the cars are driven on Trade Plates for about 20 miles by an ex police traffic driver for evaluation. He also provides demonstration drives and accompanies potential customers. Oh yes - if you want to try out the latest Morgan 3 wheeler the regulations require you to wear either a seat belt or a crash helmet! Nissan cars leave Sunderland in their thousands and are transported by massive ships around the world, meanwhile in the spa town of Malvern its a single car transporter that collects a car for delivery to a dealership. Before it leaves the premises each car has to be paid for in full, by the dealer. A business arrangement not unlike the days of Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan, know as “HFS” who founded the company back in 1910, and the business has remained in the Morgan family hands ever since. HFS died in 1959 aged 78. If he walked into the works today I'm sure he would find little had changed. Even the latest Morgan 3 wheeler would be familiar to him with its skinny tyres and air-cooled V twin motor up front, but he might be surprised by the option of a zero emissions electric motor that gives 0-60mph in 9 seconds and is good for a top speed of 90mph.

Stricter ITV Controls From 2018 The Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV, the Spanish equivalent to the MOT, will become much stricter from 2018, especially in elements relating to pollutant emissions, the devices intended to reduce them and also a large part of the security systems that are shipped and are controlled electronically. The process started almost three years ago with the publication of the European directive 2014/45/UE, which the Spanish Government hopes to have transposed into legislation, via Royal Decree, before this summer, but it has been accelerated and reinforced as a result of the so-called “dieselgate”, the scandal surrounding Volkswagen. It is because of the weaknesses in the approval procedures that have been demonstrated that periodic inspections such as those of the ITV are clearly insufficient. Regulated by European and national regulations in the case of diesel cars, for example, today only the opacity of smoke is measured. Although the changes still have to overcome pitfalls, for example, when it was published three years ago, the 2014/45/EU directive said nothing about the control of NOx emitted by cars, now in the eye of the hurricane. Because it was the cause of the engine cracking and because, unlike CO2, it directly damages the health of people. Field tests are expected to be completed by July and at the end of the year, ready for delivery, along with a manual with the maximum NOx limits, the protocol for its measurement and the procedures to verify that the anti-pollution devices have not been manipulated.
Given that the time that the European Commission would take to incorporate these changes is difficult to estimate, in Spain the goal of Industry is to “incorporate it as soon as possible”, according to Gutiérrez, “because although high NOx limits are now set to drive out the big polluters.” This would allow its application throughout 2018, when numerous security systems under electronic control will be reviewed, such as the stability program, the airbags or the seatbelt pre-tensioners. Would the above raise an increase in fees for passing ITV? “If they have to pay for the data, will we have to pay for the data?, it depends on the model that the ITV station operates.
