I personally think Porsches are cool. Those who have driven them and those who own them can attest to their remarkable roadholding, perfect balance, powerful engines and they look beautiful. The 904 Carrera GTS, shown on the front page was developed after Porsche withdrawn from Formula One at the end of 1962. Porsche decided to focus on sports car racing and develop a successor to the 718. This beauty and more classics like the 550 Spyder, the Jagermeister 962, a Gulf-liveried 917k. Also “seldom-seen” cars: the 1938 Berlin-Rome Type 64 race car, the Petersen’s own 901, an X83 Turbo S Flachbau 964. In total 50 of the coolest of the cool are being held in one big gallery. The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles will host “The Porsche Effect” a new exhibit opening to the public 3rd Feb, that’s if there’s any tickets left.

MOTOR RELEASES The name T-Roc is Volkswagen's way of signposting this small SUV as a car for the youth who don't want a fuddy duddy hatchback - even if the price means that it'll be mostly middle-aged drivers who can afford it. Smaller than the Tuguan and using the same mechanical parts as the Golf, the T-Roc should offer reasonable fuel economy, with the practicality of a higher roof that's curved to make the car look sporty. The dashboard is straight out of the Golf but can be colour-matched to the exterior for a less grey look (VW promises some bold shades).

CAR RERSTORATION SPAIN!
I am an electronics engineer but my hobby is classic car restoration. I am fortunate to have the space and ability to do this in my retirement. This month I will detail one of the marques that I really know and enjoy – MG and the Midget in particular. Next month the Lotus Europa.
At home the engine started easily but the backfire was like an AK47 on full auto. It took me several days to determine the problem and to give my neighbours some peace and quiet. Also, it needed a new floor on the driver's side, which I welded in, otherwise it was very solid.
In the meantime I had bought back the Welsh MG and it was parked next to the Yank. Somehow, in the night, they got together and their identities somehow got mixed up – as they do – MG's are very incestuous. I am at a loss as to how this happened but, as a result of this union, I ended up with a LHD US car with Spanish Historic registration. The Welsh MG, as an undocumented alien, was So I bought it and had it shipped. When I collected repatriated to the scrapyard of my friend Fernando it in Valencia it looked as good as the advert. I who sold it for parts. He has 90, yes ninety, classic cars in his collection but that's another story. opened the bonnet: why were the carbs on the wrong side of the engine? The first RHD MG Midget I bought in from Wales, ran very well, no problems in my care and I had it registered as Historic at a cost of one thousand Euros (!!!). After it was sold I bought one via Ebay from the USA. It looked good except that there were no engine photos. The buyer explained that he did not have time to post them because the auction was nearly over...
I only drove (hammered) the US car a few miles before I realised that the clutch was completely useless. I borrowed an engine hoist and pulled the engine and gearbox, necessary on the Midget, to replace the clutch assembly. I have an inspection pit that I built at my house which makes this operation much easier. Afterwards it drove very, very well and I had a lot of fun with it. Unfortunately, my wife is not a great lover of cramped, noisy, breezy, hot, oily, smelly, unreliable cars and so it had to go... I sold it to a company in Girona and they sold it into France where they also love them, possibly because they like small, smelly, unreliable things....
That's when the (second) love of my life, the Lotus Europa, one of which I had when I was just a lad, came into my life – again.
Answer - because the B**tard had changed the engine to the smaller, 1300cc, unit. In addition, there was a copper clutch hydraulic pipe dangling in the air, over the battery, from the master cylinder to the gearbox slave, because it is on the opposite side to the original engine...

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2017
WRC Business as usual, I suppose you could say, as Sebastien Ogier drove his M-Sport Ford Fiesta to his fifth victory in a row in Monte Carlo. Even though the Frenchman had a comfortable margin over the Toyota of Ott Tanak in the end it was far from an easy victory as the ever changing conditions caused havoc throughout the field and, as is the way of things in this, the most historic of rallies, some suffered more than others and lady luck played a huge part as well. On the very first stage, Sisteron run backwards, Thierry Neuvuille lost four minutes when he slid off the road into a snow covered ditch, effectively ending his chances of victory. Neuville was the biggest loser but Latvala, Meeke, Evans, Sordo, Breen and Lappi also got caught out on the icy roads and lost varying amounts of time. Ogier was not immune from the treacherous conditions but he seems to have a happy knack of getting away with it and twice spun the car only to be helped on his way by spectators. There is no doubting Ogier’s skill and judgement, especially when the road surface is slippery and he seems to know just how far to push to achieve the required result. Ott Tanak was having a marvellous debut for Toyota and when Mikkelsen’s Hyundai retired with alternator problems he moved into second place with team mate Latvala in third. Lappi made it two, three, four for Toyota but on the very last stage he slid off the road and lost thirty seconds dropping to seventh place in the process allowing Meeke, Neuville and Evans to slip by. Meeke set fastest time on the Power Stage to add five valuable points to his fourth place haul but it is Ogier who leads the way as we look forward to the snow of Sweden next month.
Other news from Monte Carlo was that Skoda have held on to their up and coming drivers and some say that this in with a view to the Czech factory entering the WRC proper next year. Jan Kopecky, Pontus Tiedeman and Kalle Rovanpera are all very quick and deserve a go in the premier category and hopefully the rumours are true and we can look forward to a fifth manufacturer taking part in WRC next year. F1 News from the pre season in F1 is that Russian money has beaten Polish sentiment at Williams. The team has chosen Sergey Sirotkin to partner Lance Stroll in this season’s Williams F1 car thus denying Robert Kubica a fairytale return to the premier category of car racing. In testing there was nothing between them but the rumoured 25 million dollars/euro/pounds which Sirotkin can bring to the cash strapped team eventually swayed it in the Russians favour. Questions will be asked about his suitability and whether two relative rookies can get the job done at a struggling Williams but time will tell and when pre season testing begins in a few weeks, all will be revealed.
The other Williams rumour is that Claire Williams is looking to sell some shares in the company bringing to an end the tightly held ownership of Williams F1, previously the preserve of the Williams family (Frank and daughter Claire) and long time friend and partner, Patrick Head. A fresh injection of capitol and somenew faces might breathe some life back into this once proud team and it would be great to see the Williams name at the top of the F1 grid once again. Otherwise in F1 we are awaiting the launch of this year’s cars but with not too much baited breath. The regulations have stayed static so do not expect much in the way of revolutionary changes to the cars but the clever designers will always surprise us and Red Bull and McLaren in particular may come up with one or two surprises. Ferrari, it is rumoured, are concentrating on increasing power to match or better Mercedes and Renault too have to concentrate on engine matters to satisfy not only themselves but also their very demanding customer teams.

Denis Jenkinson - "Jenks"

An advertisement that hooks your attention fulfils everyone's need, advertiser, publisher and potential customer. It was the photograph in this advertisement that really had me hooked. Of course a young Stirling Moss is easily recognised with his familiar polo helmet but what about the bearded and bedraggled man alongside him in the pudding basin helmet? This is Denis Jenkinson, or “Jenks,” the motor sport journalist and prolific author who died in 1996 at the age of 76 years. What set him aside from the usual enthusiastic motor sport scribe was that he didn't just talk the talk but he also walked the walk, despite being a diminutive 5 feet tall. In 1949 he was the first World Champion in sidecar racing when he was sidecar passenger to Eric Oliver. Anyone who can hang onto a bit of frame whilst sliding across to balance a 3 wheeled outfit with your nose an inch above the tarmac at over a 100mph, protected by a cork helmet and some skinny leathers has to rate highly in the bravery stakes. He saw racing as a dangerous sport and his public stance on this frequently saw him clash with Jackie Stewart over the introduction of higher safety standards. Perhaps Jenks knew no fear and could not understand this emotion in others? In 1955 he was navigator in the passenger seat to Stirling Moss in their epic winning of the Mille Miglia in Italy. This was a race of 1000 miles over public roads around Italy in a Mercedes SLR that they completed in a shattering time of 10 hrs 7 mins 48secs - averaging 97.9mph. In our modern age this type of race would be dismissed as lunacy but back then, 60 years ago, a high speed race on public roads with inevitable fatalities to drivers and spectators was perfectly acceptable. With Moss at the wheel throughout, Jenks was alongside him in the open cockpit of the car, all the while reading home made pace notes from a paper roll. His system that Moss described as “the bog roll” has been credited with pioneering the modern Pace Notes now essential in Rallying. Verbal communication between them was impossible so he was translating them into hand signals, whilst suffering bouts of vomiting, loosing his spectacles and attending to the calls of nature. At speeds around 150 mph each of them had total trust in the other's ability, a single mistake would have spelt doom. I've read most of Denis Jenkinson's books and now I understand so much more of what he wrote about Stirling Moss in The Racing Driver. And how did Jenks ever find the words to describe that epic drive on the Mille Miglia? The outstanding fact that sticks in my mind is that in 1955, racing on a public road between Cremona and Brescia, a distance of 83 miles they averaged 165.5 mph including stopping at a time control en route. Jenks was the quintessential British eccentric with boundless energy and enthusiasm for motor sport. During the racing season he followed the tour as the correspondent for Motor Sport magazine and took lodgings in England during the winters when he wrote his books. He never married and finally settled down in a run-down house in Hampshire. I say run-down as he had no mains electric or water supply and the house was stuffed with his motoring archives and a collection of dismantled cars that he was always in the process of rebuilding. He had few friends but whenever they did drop in to visit, he never made any apologies for this lifestyle, he died peacefully and content with the life he had lived. Sir Stirling Moss is now 88 years old and has not enjoyed the best of health since being hospitalised last year with a severe chest infection. Last month he announced his retirement from public life. His name is synonymous with motor racing and he is acclaimed as “the greatest driver never to win the World Championship" Next month I'll tell the story of how I raced against him.

So what to do, what to do? well one old biker trick if you after a "new" road, is to reverse your route and ride a familiar road the other way round. Great! Different bends, views, etc...a totally new experience. Ahhh, but it doesn't make for a "new" magazine article does it?! (No it doesn't! Ed)...hmmm thought not! Lol! Permission to Drive Assuming your insurance covers multiple drivers, you may allow any qualified driver to use your vehicle. However, in order to avoid problems if the driver is stopped, it is recommended that the vehicle driver is given a document proving that they have the owner´s permission to drive the vehicle. This may seem like an inconvenience, but it is for your protection. If the vehicle is stopped, the officers who come across a vehicle driven by somebody other than the registered keeper will question the legalities of the driver, which is in your best interest, as if it is stolen they will find out very soon. Otherwise, if a vehicle is stolen but not yet reported as such, there could be no reason for the Guardia Civil or police to doubt that the person driving the vehicle has the owner’s permission, and so it could otherwise go unchecked. Of course there could be a genuine reason for somebody other than the registered keeper to drive the car, which is what this document would help to prove. Simply download the document and complete it, or complete the online version and print it, and attach a copy of both the owner’s driving licence, and a copy of the licence of the person given permission to drive.
