I am pleased and proud to present to you the ASO’s 2010 Concert Season. The year is marked by a sense of celebration of the growing stature and musical vitality of an orchestra that is receiving worldwide acclaim. A special feature is the range of guest conductors we have secured to work with the ASO. Names like Oleg Caetani, Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Chief Conductor of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra will be well known to Adelaide music-lovers. Alexander Vedernikov, Music Director of the Bolshoi, is among the great European conductors of his generation and Christopher Seaman is one of the most insightful and experienced English conductors of his generation. Younger talents bring freshness and vitality in the form of Kristjan Järvi and a new rising star from Munich, Radoslaw Szulc, makes his Australian debut. Our Master Series in 2010 extends to 14 programs, encompassing a rich variety of the classic orchestral repertoire. It brings together an exciting selection of great soloists from Australia and the world. The year features leading piano soloists Bernd Glemser, Peter Jablonski, Kalle Randalu, Sydney International Piano Competition winner, Konstantin Shamray and Young Performers Award winner Max Foster. Three of the world’s leading violinists showcase their extraordinary musicianship as conductors as well—Richard Tognetti, Dmitry Sitkovetsky and James Ehnes. Australian artists include Michael Kieran Harvey (winner of the inaugural Ivo Pogorelich Prize), master organist Calvin Bowman and two stars from our own orchestra: the brilliant violinist Natsuko Yoshimoto and clarinettist Dean Newcomb. Musically, I hope you will feel spoilt for choice among the riches of the great classical music repertoire. The classical and romantic periods are a special focus in the 2010 Season, with masterworks of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Haydn providing the Season’s backbone. Modern music is not neglected and the music of Shostakovich, Bernstein and Gershwin add visceral excitement and exuberant colours.

I have always had a profound passion for the music of Robert Schumann and the occasion of his anniversary in 2010 gives us good reason to celebrate his magnificent symphonies with three of the world’s best soloist interpreters of his music. Those who experienced the special energy and depth that emerged from our Sibelius Symphony Cycle in 2007 will be excited by the potential of the unique and powerful experience that is offered by the 2010 Schumann Festival. I hope you enjoy reading this brochure and making your selections from among the many treasurable musical experiences on offer in 2010. Arvo Volmer Chief Conductor and Music Director A message from Santos Santos is thrilled to continue our long association with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Our partnership with the ASO is an important part of our participation with the South Australian community. Santos is proud of our connections with the State’s symphony orchestra. Although we are one of Australia’s largest oil and gas producers, and have been supplying gas to Adelaide from Moomba for 40 years, we’re not simply an energy company. We’re a company with energy. The energy to explore the remotest and harshest terrain. The energy to unlock Australia’s vast resources in places where many said nothing would be found. The energy to supply ‘carbon-lite’ gas to fuel homes and industry as well as power nations throughout Asia now and into the future … and the energy to take bold initiatives to grow our own business and enrich our community. In short, we have the energy to make things happen. A quality we share with the highly acclaimed Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. David Knox CEO & Managing Director Santos

‘Mahler’s works are the grandest of all symphonies … as the Olympic Games are to sport, so is Mahler to symphonic music.’ The aspiration to play all Mahler’s Symphonies is driven by the orchestra’s achievements in the 1998 and 2004 Wagner Ring Cycles. The success of the Melba recordings of the 2004 Cycle with astonishingly positive international critical reviews, spurred Chief Conductor, Arvo Volmer, to push for development of the musical ‘lineage’ from Wagner to Mahler and beyond.

‘ The Master Series is the lifeblood of the ASO. There is no greater motivation for a musician than sharing and recreating the music that has inspired and touched our lives. The adrenalin, the tension, the anticipation and the excitement is felt intensely at the concert whether you are in the audience or on stage. Festivals allow an orchestra, conductor and audience to go on a musical, cultural and emotional journey through the life and legacy of some of history’s greatest composers.’ Natsuko Yoshimoto, Concertmaster

‘For me, playing Mahler is an overwhelming experience. I get lost in the moment.’ Emma Perkins, Violin

7HLE LEBC;H0 9ED:K9JEH So ambitious to conceive and so audacious to perform, the Adelaide Festival and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra are proud to present Mahler 8: Symphony of a Thousand at the 2010 Adelaide Festival. Under the baton of Maestro Arvo Volmer, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will join forces with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra to perform Mahler’s monumental 8th Symphony, backed by a phalanx of massed choirs from across Australia plus eight international soloists. Only ever undertaken on the rarest of occasions with its full complement of voices and musicians, Mahler’s 8th, like Wagner’s Ring Cycle, is a performance that attracts global interest.

Richard Tognetti brings his unique musicianship to the Symphony, showcasing his remarkable abilities as a musical leader. The London Daily Telegraph hailed his playing as ‘incisive, impassioned and characterful’. The critic could have added ‘charismatic’, as few other artists in the world today radiate the unique platform presence of Tognetti. His performance of the greatest concerto in the violin repertoire on his 1743 Guaneri del Gesù instrument will be something to cherish. Tognetti then turns his hand to conducting Antonin Dvorák’s sublimely lyrical Eighth Symphony, a work brimming with warmth, exuberant dance rhythms and al fresco scenes from the sunlit meadows of his native Bohemia.

Fauré’s musical depiction of the tender, dreamlike world of Maurice Maeterlinck’s Pelléas and Mélisande, is followed by dazzling virtuosity from the 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition winner, Konstantin Shamray in the transfixing blend of jazzy energy and sublime reverie that is Ravel’s G major Concerto. Bolshoi Theatre Music Director, Alexander Vedernikov, boasts the perfect credentials to explore the anguished beauty and drama to touch the soul of Tchaikovsky’s intensely personal Fourth Symphony. In the final movement, a wild Russian dance, the ASO will be incandescent.

Adelaide music lovers can savour Foster’s dynamism in Mozart’s E flat Piano Concerto, K.271, described as ‘one of Mozart’s monumental works, bursting with originality and boldness, which he never surpassed.’ From the gilded salons of Salzburg we move to the swirling mists and rugged scenery of Scotland, which evoked one of Felix Mendelssohn’s most inspired and exhilarating scores, his Scottish Symphony. &* Dmitry Sitkovetsky and the ASO reprise their sell-out 2008 success, this time with the hauntingly austere beauty of Arvo Pärt’s Fratres and continuing with two of Mozart’s greatest serenades, works which often competed for attention with the tinkle of champagne flutes and the titter of Salzburg’s A-List. The Gran Partita for 13 Wind Instruments with its technical brilliance, emotional complexity and spiritual profundity is the undisputed monarch of wind serenades. The Haffner Serenade, on a similar scale, radiates poetic sensibility and magnificent melodic invention.

Internationally acclaimed Oleg Caetani, Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, makes his Adelaide debut in a program of classical delights. Caetani’s deep sense of the classical style comes to the fore in Schubert’s sunny and effervescent Sixth Symphony. He is joined by our exciting new Principal Clarinet Dean Newcomb in Weber’s Clarinet Concert No. 1 showcasing the instrument in music ranging from rhapsodic expressiveness to virtuoso brilliance. Beethoven’s sparkling Eighth Symphony displays all the qualities of the composer’s humanity and creative dynamism to cap off an evening of thorough musical delight.

The extreme and ultimately fatal passion of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has cast a spell over composers as diverse as Piotr Tchaikovsky and Leonard Bernstein. Tchaikovsky’s 20 minute distillation of the play is among the most beloved works in the repertoire where the composer reveals his deeply romantic spirit. In West Side Story, Bernstein transferred the setting from 16th century Verona to the mean streets of New York, where rival street gangs express themselves in dance. Former Vladimir Ashkenazy protégé, Peter Jablonski, described by The Australian as ‘a young eagle in full flight’, brings the true spirit of Poland to Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto in the composers’ 200th anniversary year.

Brace yourself for an unforgettable feast of colour and movement, from the exotic, voluptuous sonorities and orchestral plumage of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite to the bravura orchestra display of Strauss. No other podium wizard has used the orchestral palette as vividly as Leopold Stokowski, whose legendary arrangement of JS Bach’s Toccata and Fugue, originally created for Walt Disney’s Fantasia, allows every orchestral section to shine. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has long been many music lovers’ first truly spell-binding musical experience. After two majestic showpieces from Stravinsky and Richard Strauss, what other climax could possibly top Respighi’s depiction of Ancient Rome; more epic than any film score?

Szymanowski’s Second Violin Concerto has an assured place in the pantheon of great virtuoso display pieces of the violin repertoire. Natsuko Yoshimoto, ASO Concertmaster explores, with her trademark rapturous tone, the shimmering textures and mercurial moods of this quicksilver masterpiece. Haydn’s Passione Symphony stunned its 18th century audiences with its boldness and intensity. Arguably his greatest, bask in the radiance of Brahms’ expansive Third Symphony.

A rare opportunity to hear the magnificent Adelaide Town Hall organ played by one of Australia’s most distinguished organists, Calvin Bowman. Poulenc’s famous Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani is a wild ride encompassing the serious and meditative, peppered with Gallic wit. Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony promises you a very different musical journey. Few Romantic works tug at the heartstrings more than this intense work, with gorgeous melodies, luxuriant sonorities and kaleidoscopic moods, ranging from the exquisite melancholy of the adagio to the joyous exuberance of the finale. A musical experience not to be missed!

The ASO will glow throughout this program. Edward Elgar was magnificently inspired by the charms of Italy, Tennyson’s ‘land of palm and orange blossom’. His concert overture, In the South, is one of his most brilliantly scored pieces, with surging melodies suffused with Mediterranean colour and warmth. Paganini Prize Winner and Yehudi Menuhin protégé, Feng Ning, returns from his triumphant ASO debut in 2009, to perform the radiant Violin Concerto No 2 by Prokofiev, with its ravishing andante and dancing finale. The evening culminates with Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony, a noble affirmation of faith which uses Martin Luther’s famous stirring hymn tune A Mighty Fortress is our God to stirring effect.

No introductory flourish sends a frisson down an audience’s collective spine like the clarinet glissando of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, symbolising the spirit of jazz age America so potently. It’s the musical equivalent of the Empire State Building. With Michael Kieran Harvey at the keyboard, the thrills just keep coming. In a roller coaster ride, the ASO and über cool podium dynamo, Kristjan Järvi, swing through a program symbolising some of the most spectacularly successful fusions of jazz and more ‘traditional’ idioms. With inspiration as diverse as the foxtrot, in John Adams The Chairman Dances, to the Frenchman Darius Milhaud’s sophisticated primitivism in the surrealist ballet The Creation of the World, this concert delivers thrills aplenty.

This concert includes a special work commissioned by the ASO with the support of the Schueler Composition Award (2010), established through the generosity of Mr Norman Schueler and Mrs Carol Schueler, in honour of Mrs Gogo Schueler. Bernd Glemser, with rock solid technique and take-no-prisoners virtuosity, is equally at home with Liszt’s wonderfully macabre bravura and the quicksilver brilliance and wit of Rachmaninov. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony originally titled ‘A Soviet Artist’s Reply to Just Criticism’ with the uniquely visceral excitement of its climaxes, is one of the few twentieth century symphonies to acquire the coveted status of a ‘classic’. Is there an undercurrent of cynicism and irony beneath the epic dimensions? You be the judge. *world premiere

Estonian keyboard master Kalle Randalu makes his Australian debut in Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto, one of the most expansive piano concertos, composed at the high water mark of Brahms’ mature inspiration. Despite its grand symphonic dimensions, the mood of its adagio is intimate and reflective and the finale charming. Then, in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, one of the most dazzling orchestral showpieces ever composed, Arvo Volmer and the orchestra will beguile you with beautiful sounds, just as Scheherazade mesmerized the cruel sultan with her exotic tales.

International star violinist, James Ehnes, reprises his sensational 2008 performances with the ASO this time as both soloist and conductor. Ehnes, who invariably has audiences swooning and critics delving into the thesaurus for new superlatives, performs Beethoven’s two Romances for Violin and Orchestra, exquisite jewel-like miniatures full of courtly elegance, proving that even Beethoven could be a ‘god of small things’. After Elgar’s richly melodic serenade, Ehnes and the ASO strings combine incandescence and ice in a knife edge performance of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, destined to obliterate forever every memory of this masterwork heard in an elevator or shopping mall.

In 1850, the future was bright for Schumann who was captivated by the vibrancy of his new home in Dusseldorf. No other work rivals the exuberance and joyous energy of his musical evocation of the Rhineland, the Rhenish symphony. The spiritual core lies in the solemn polyphony of the fourth movement, inspired by the ceremonial spectacle of Cologne Cathedral and a homage to Schumann’s beloved Bach. Virtuoso cellist Timo-Veikko Valve will reveal the secrets of the concerto with its songful and reflective solo line. The concert opens with a Schumann rarity, his elegant and vivacious Overture, Scherzo and Finale.

Schumann’s Violin Concerto was long overshadowed by other Romantic concertos and was not performed until the 1930’s. With advocacy from violinists of Vadim Gluzman’s calibre, its reputation is steadily growing as audiences discover that its lyrical beauty alone makes it worthy of a place in the ranks of the great Romantic violin repertoire. The Fourth symphony is his most taut. Intense and ‘modern’, the brooding, mysterious transition from scherzo to the eruption of the finale is one of the most wonderfully suspenseful passages in all music. Schumann’s First symphony is full of the joy of new love, radiant with happiness and the feeling of spring.

The Festival concludes with two of the composer’s landmark works. Schumann’s Piano Concerto has been described as the ‘late and somewhat strange fruit’ of an exceptionally inventive music mind. The overarching heroic sense of struggle in the first movement, the scintillating perpetuum mobile scherzo, the deep emotions of the adagio and its triumphant finale make the Second Symphony arguably one of Schumann’s greatest symphonic achievements.

Climate change is the major global issue facing us today and evokes a myriad of responses in the community, not least in the world of music. For this unique concert, the ASO will commission from a major Australian composer a new work that takes issues of climate change and the environment as a point of musical contemplation and inspiration. In a concert of music celebrating the many colours and characters of the natural world, traversing composer’s responses to its beauty and fragility, the ASO promises an emotional, provocative and ultimately inspiring musical experience that will leave us all changed.

Splashes of colour and furious brush strokes combine with the ASO’s orchestral palette to bring a dazzling live-concert experience. Painter Phil Doncon creates before your eyes bright and dynamic images inspired by the music he hears. Discover the art of listening as this energetic dialogue between sight and sound brings new meaning to the term ‘action painting’. What can you picture when you hear Fucik, Entry of the Gladiators? What colour does Sculthorpe’s Kakadu sound like?

The ASO would like to acknowledge and thank the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra who originally created these programs for young audiences.
