Welcome
Welcome to a new and exciting season with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. As we move in to our seventh decade we are delighted to share with you some of the finest classical music ever written, performed by some of the most talented musicians in Australia. We bring you more than great music—we bring you thrilling concert experiences that reach to the very core of human existence. These are exciting times. In this age of electronic, impersonal communication; of high definition, high resolution surrogates, it is exhilarating to be part of the palpable connection that is woven between musicians and audience members during a live performance. The intermingling of energies as we join in this universal expression of humanity reaches and satisfies our deepest longings for unity with others. It is exciting to experience and exciting to know that more and more Canberrans are sharing this connection with the CSO. This artistic excellence is the result of shared passion; the passion of Nicholas
Milton, CSO Chief Conductor & Artistic Director, for inspiring our musicians; the passion of those musicians for the joyous expression of music; the passion of CSO patrons for superb concert experiences and the passion of Canberra’s corporate community for this orchestra and the people we serve through music. Last season was a watershed year for the CSO. We emerged on the national stage as an orchestra of firsts. Among professional symphony orchestras in Australia, the CSO is first with the highest percentage of subscriber renewals and increased ticket sales. Proportionately, this orchestra leads the country in income generated through corporate support and donations. Comparatively, we are first in showcasing Australian soloists, conductors and composers on the professional symphonic stage. The CSO is the only major orchestra in this country led by an Australian Chief Conductor & Artistic Director. Nicholas Milton joined the orchestra in 2007 and in a few short years has taken the CSO
to stunning new levels of artistic achievement. I am delighted to announce that in recognition of Nicholas’ outstanding contributions to the CSO, ActewAGL has commissioned Artistic Patronage of Nicholas. On behalf of the Board, staff and musicians of the CSO, I would like to thank Michael Costello and ActewAGL for acknowledging and sharing Nicholas’ passion and commitment to excellence. The CSO’s many corporate partners are leaders not only in their fields, but also in their active appreciation, engagement and support for the arts. They are part of this exceptional community in which participation or attendance at the arts exceeds that of sport. They understand that connecting with our inherent creative nature is essential to healthy living. I speak for all of us who love classical music when I extend sincere thanks to our corporate partners for the very real contributions they make to our shared CSO experiences. We are also given strong support by the ACT Government through artsACT and
the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council for the Arts. The CSO has a very positive association with both agencies and I look forward to developing these relationships as we continue to share the excitement of this orchestra with the people of Canberra. We live in an age of high-speed pressure, of shifting perceptions and uncertain outcomes. We long for experience without conflict where no one has to win or lose and the uplifting power of beauty unites us all. Music speaks to our hearts and the CSO brings you more than great music.

Our artistic vision
I am delighted to present to you the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s 2011 Concert Season and it gives me even greater pleasure, on behalf of the musicians of your orchestra, to warmly invite you to join us for another year of sensational and thrilling musical experiences. The CSO’s rapidly growing stature as an artistic organisation of enviable vitality is a worthy reflection of the extraordinary musical successes of the last several years. Over this period it has been wonderfully rewarding for me to have been a small part of that miraculous organism that is an orchestra. It is profoundly satisfying that as the CSO develops artistically, the inspirational music we perform takes on ever more intricate meanings. Our interpretations amass layers of complexity just as our
accomplishments become an intrinsic artistic archive that informs everything we perform in the future.
The musicians and I have put together a menu of fantastic symphonic music to enrapture, enchant and enthrall you.
It is not only an enormous pleasure but also a deeply touching privilege to have the opportunity to engage with the magical power of music. This is what we mean when we say that the CSO is more than great music: with you we have travelled through worlds of drama and majesty, realms of triumph and tragedy and on colourful and exotic adventures. Together we have explored the depths of the human experience and the enduring power of love. Orchestral performances are extraordinary expressions of humanity at its highest and are, indeed, more than great music.
We have invited brilliant artists to interpret the treasures of our canon: emerging Australian soloists such as the exciting pianists David Fung and Edward Neeman as well as the internationallyacclaimed Goldner String Quartet and Amy Dickson—the breath-taking saxophone sensation taking the world by storm. We bring you Grieg’s immortal Piano Concerto in a special tribute to the great Australian Percy Grainger in his commemorative year, and symphonic masterworks such as Mendelssohn’s "Scottish Symphony", Beethoven’s glorious Seventh, and Shostakovich’s awe-inspiring Tenth. And with The Pines of Rome, prepare to experience the ground-trembling sensation of a Roman
The CSO in 2011 brings you a veritable banquet of musical expression.
legion advancing along the Via Appia in the brilliance of the newly risen sun. Your Grand Gala event this season is a very special concert performance of Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute and our 2011 afternoon of dance, Matinee Magic, showcases stunning couples from Dancing with the Stars in full ballroom splendor. Each one of us in the orchestra— musicians and management alike— eagerly anticipates exploring with you the thrilling artistry and sublime heart of the CSO as we share more than great music in 2011.

CSO Prom Concert 2011 Hungarian Rhapsody The CSO's 2011 season fires up with a spectacular Prom Concert which is guaranteed to get your pulse racing. Led by Richard Mills AM, one of Australia’s most distinguished conductors, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra is joined by the Embassy of Hungary to present a dazzling showcase featuring the most passionate and evocative music of central Europe's most romantic land. 2011 also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Hungary's favourite son—composer and pianist extraordinaire, Franz Liszt, and the CSO celebrates with Liszt's stunning and tuneful Hungarian Rhapsody. Our 2011 Prom also features violin sensation Xenia Deviatkina-Loh performing Sarasate's beloved Gypsy Airs and, stepping directly off a flight from Budapest, Hungarian star soprano Judit Molnár joins the CSO to evoke the soaring beauty of her homeland with music of waltz king, Johann Strauss. Bring your picnic and stretch out under the trees in the gardens of Government House as the CSO presents an afternoon concert for the whole family, packed with surprises of musical delight.

Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 in E flat major, Op 73 “Emperor”
Beethoven’s last piano concerto and Mendelssohn’s most powerful symphony are the two extraordinary masterpieces for the opening concert of our exciting 2011 Llewellyn Series. Guest Conductor Marc Taddei brings tremendous energy and authority to the stage for this majestic program. “The Emperor”, recently voted by Australian listeners as their favourite piano concerto, transports listeners into a mystical and magical world. In the hands of sensational Australian pianist, David Fung, you experience an interpretation of this work full of integrity and imagination. Completing our opening program, the “Scottish Symphony” by Felix Mendelssohn is resplendent with melodies of beauty and elegance—this is stunning music which immerses your senses and whets your appetite for the fantastic CSO season ahead.
“David reminds one of concert artists like Andras Schiff and Martha Argerich who also combine extraordinary pianistic display and great musical subtlety...He combines keyboard fireworks with a mature and refined technique.” Bob Attiyeh, Yarlung Records

The CSO’s Artistic Director Nicholas Milton conducts 11:2—a suberb concert of surging temperament featuring a spectacular world premiere performance. A musical immersion in the beauty and power of nature, this is an evening of soaring melodies and dramatic triumph. Inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of Italy, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien is a mosaic of colour and texture while Rossini’s Thieving Magpie overture is one of his best-loved concert works. The CSO is also proud to present Australian phenomenon Amy Dickson in the world premiere of Ross Edwards’ Bird Spirit Dreaming for saxophone and orchestra. This extraordinary concert concludes with trumpets triumphant in Respighi’s awesome Pines of Rome.
“She has an individual and unusual tone, luscious, silky-smooth, sultry and voluptuous by turns; her phrasing is beautifully finished, her control of dynamic infinitely subtle.” Ivan March, Gramophone 2008
ACTEW Grand Gala The Magic Flute Nicholas Milton conductor Artistic Patron, ActewAGL with cast from Pacific Opera Saturday 9 July 7.30pm Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music Duration 2 hours with interval
No opera is more popular than Mozart’s Magic Flute, and the CSO, in conjunction with Pacific Opera, is proud to present a unique concert presentation of this magical fairytale. One of Mozart’s most mysterious works, its immortal characters weave a narrative of beauty, passion, betrayal, revenge, justice and, ultimately, love in a myriad of wondrous disguises. The Magic Flute is presented with a full cast and narrator chosen from Australia’s most superb emerging stars of opera. For those who have enjoyed our last three sold-out Gala spectaculars, this event is a glorious evening of magic and wonder. Mark your calendars and do not miss the enjoyment of Canberra’s Magic Flute!

splendid work which Pacific Opera is doing with so many of our young Australian singers.”

St.George Corporate & Business Bank Llewellyn Series 11:3 Stanley Dodds makes a welcome return to the CSO stage for this fascinating concert. The great masters are represented in 11:3 by some of their most popular symphonies: Schubert’s delightful “Little Symphony” is one of his most optimistic and perfect creations and Beethoven’s majestic “Apotheosis of Dance” is stirring in its perfect architecture and soulful beauty. At this program’s centrepiece, the CSO is joined by one of Australia’s finest ensembles, the Goldner String Quartet, for a rare performance of Matthew Hindson’s Schubertinspired The Rave and the Nightingale—a work of enormous energy and popular appeal. We are delighted to present the Canberra debut of such an impressive piece in this exceptional program.
“Flowing, unforced musicianship from the Goldner players allows them to unlock fully the spirit of the music. Their playing is eloquent, human-faced and expressive.” Graham Strahle, The Australian

Nicholas Milton, our inimitable Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, has chosen a spectacular season finale of amazing potency and gorgeous lyricism. This is a concert not to be missed under any circumstances. The evening opens with the beloved Finlandia by Sibelius before the CSO welcomes New York-based Canberra pianist, Edward Neeman to perform Grieg’s brilliant, virtuosic Piano Concerto. This work is a fitting tribute to Percy Grainger in his commemorative year— the Australian composer and pianist was Grieg’s favourite interpreter of this magnificent composition. After the interval, Shostakovich’s glorious Tenth Symphony is a powerful conclusion to a thrilling concert and phenomenal 2011 Llewellyn Series.

noteworthy No matter what age you are now, your appreciation of music started when you were a child. To nurture this appreciation in today's children, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra is proud to partner with the Macquarie Group Foundation to bring free, interactive music-education programs to ACT schoolchildren. Noteworthy was introduced in 2007 and has already engaged and entertained over 16,000 students from age 3 to Year 12. Serving as a great introduction to symphonic instruments and music, Noteworthy concerts are designed to meet the educational needs of specific age groups with everything from “clap along
rhythm concepts in Noteworthy Kinder to on-stage workshops for senior music students playing with CSO musicians. In 2010 the CSO was also able to initiate Noteworthy Outreach which took the program to students with disabilities at Black Mountain School. Noteworthy concerts are held at the beginning of term three each year and are open to students in all ACT Government, Catholic and Independent Schools. The CSO thanks the Macquarie Group Foundation for their vision and commitment to young people and music in our community.

Giving annual giving program
CSO PLANNED GIVING
Play your part in the Canberra Symphony Orchestra! Annual Giving and Planned Giving are directly responsible for strengthening the orchestra’s artistic achievements now and in the future. More musicians, more rehearsals, more music—the full and glorious symphonic experience you love. The CSO needs your support to make this possible.
Planned giving means contributing to a not-for-profit organisation such as the CSO, while gaining access to financial benefits for yourself or for your estate. This provides creative and tax-friendly ways to support the CSO in today’s economic environment.
Donations are always welcome and all contributions over $2 are tax deductible. Each donor becomes a member of our Giving Program, with those pledging over $100 receiving mention in our concert programmes. Donations over $4,000 go directly into the CSO’s Legacy Fund (the Maestro Legacy Circle). The investment income generated from these enduring donations supports current and future developments and projects. To play your part in the CSO through our Giving Program, please contact our office on 02 6247 9191 or you can give online at www.cso.org.au Together we are creating the orchestra our city deserves.
Depending on your situation, there are different ways to make a planned gift such as a bequest in your Will or through a Private Prescribed Fund (PPF). PPFs are a form of ancillary trust fund designed to encourage private philanthropy by providing private groups, such as businesses, families and individuals, with greater flexibility to start their own trust funds for philanthropic purposes. Donors receive a tax deduction for donations to their PPF, and most PPFs are also income tax exempt. Donations to the CSO through Planned Giving are secured in our Legacy Fund which preserves your donation while using the interest earned to help the CSO. In this way, your gift is able to keep giving and guarantee that future generations will benefit from your generosity. Your financial advisor or solicitor can help you choose the option that works best for you to ensure you share your love of music to inspire others— now and in the future.
