A SPECTACULAR RETURN A THREE-CONCERT PROGRAM CELEBRATING THE MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S RETURN TO ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE, HAMER HALL, AUSTRALIA’S PREMIER CONCERT VENUE The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra makes its debut in Melbourne’s beautifully refurbished concert hall in this special three-program festival, conducted by Markus Stenz. Act 1 Thursday 9 and Friday 10 August Act 2 Thursday 16 and Saturday 18 August Act 3 Wednesday 22 August A much-loved figure in Melbourne’s musical life, Markus Stenz was the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor from 1998 to 2004. The first concert is an epic exploration of orchestral sonority, culminating in Mahler’s spectacular hymn to nature, love and faith. In keeping with the surprise piece Stenz used to perform at the end of many of his programs – which he called Act 3 – details about the third concert will be kept secret until the night of the performance. But we promise it will put the Hamer Hall acoustic renovations through their paces!

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is redefining what it means to engage with our community and facilitate a life-long interest in music and learning, presenting informative and musically-broadening concert presentations for audiences of all ages.
Our inaugural Education Week in June 2011 saw more than 10,000 school children, teachers, parents and families engage with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – many for the very first time. Planning for our 2012 Education Week from 5 to 9 June is well advanced; and among many other events, MSO Associate Conductor Benjamin Northey will again conduct Classic Kids and be joined by UK music educator Paul Rissmann to present more informative and interactive performances for Primary and Secondary school students in our Meet the Orchestra and Meet the Music concerts.
We are also continually exploring new ways to integrate live performance, education and communication technology, with our highly popular iPhone and iPad App, MSO Learn. This cleverly takes the inner workings of the Orchestra into the pockets of tens of thousands of individuals throughout the world, while our digital learning resource Double Planet for VCE Music students and their teachers will provide the foundations for our Up Close and Musical series.
We recognise that music education plays a vital role in encouraging self-confidence and participation, in relationship building and social inclusion, as well as the training of great musicians and new audiences. The Pizzicato Effect at Meadows Primary School is just one example of a high impact program designed to create new learning pathways for children; and together with a number of presenting partners like the City of Melbourne’s ArtPlay and Federation Square we will continue to offer hugely rewarding and enjoyable musical experiences. Join us in 2012 as MSO musicians work alongside new and diverse audiences of all ages.

Come aboard a wild ride through contemporary American orchestral music. Michael Gordon’s collaboration with visionary film-maker Bill Morrison, Dystopia, is a frenzied, chaotic drive along Los Angeles’ Highway 90. Benjamin Northey conductor John Bell director Members of The Bell Shakespeare Company John Bell is joined by members of Bell Shakespeare and the MSO for this unique experience in words and music. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has inspired generations of composers to write music of youthful zest, tragic violence and sublime lyricism. Together, the MSO and Bell Shakespeare bring you the play’s dramatic highlights, along with beautiful music inspired by this, the world’s greatest love story, featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Delius and Prokofiev. Here is an event to demonstrate the power great art has to move us deeply. PRESENTED IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Family Classic Kids is the MSO’s popular program of concerts for children aged three to eight years of age – and a great way to introduce young people to the magic of orchestral music. With the children sitting right next to the Orchestra, there are opportunities to sing along, respond to the music with movement and actions, follow a story and maybe even conduct!
Wilma Smith violin Fiona Sargeant viola Rohan de Korte cello Philip Arkinstall clarinet Donald Nicolson piano Stravinsky The Soldier’s Tale: Suite (arranged for clarinet, violin and piano) Hindemith Quartet for clarinet, violin, cello and piano Brahms Piano Quartet No.3 As World War I ended, Stravinsky was living in Europe cut off from his royalties because of the Russian revolution. Needing to generate some income, he created the little theatre piece The Soldier’s Tale, from which he arranged this suite for clarinet, violin and piano as a token of gratitude to the financier of the original production, who was an excellent amateur clarinettist. After Hindemith’s lyrical work you’ll hear Brahms’ quartet, the slow movement of which has one of the most beautiful cello solos in all chamber music.

BRAHMS QUINTET Tuesday 27 November at 7.30pm Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre Garrick Ohlsson piano Members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Brahms Two Rhapsodies Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Handel Brahms Piano Quintet Brahms’ piano music spans his entire creative life. In the mighty Variations and Fugue of 1861, he takes a theme from a Handel keyboard suite and fashions from it a powerful piano panorama. The Two Rhapsodies, which he created nearly 20 years later, are among his most lyrical works for the instrument, while the masterful Quintet, a work which took Brahms many years to complete, is a landmark in the history of chamber music – bold, passionate and written on a grand scale.
