Season
2011
In 2011 the NZSO will be presenting an outstanding range of artists and repertoire in over 100 concerts presented in 24 cities and towns from Kerikeri to Invercargill.
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra has been delighting audiences in concert halls, schools, marae, hospitals, parks, rest homes and on railway platforms for 64 memorable years.
It is a great pleasure to endorse the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s 2011 season. The NZSO is internationally acclaimed and I am pleased that so many music lovers throughout the country have the opportunity to hear it live.
New Zealand’s only full-time, full-scale professional orchestra is perennially on the road, touring as many as 100 symphonic concerts and performing dozens of dedicated concerts for children and small communities each year.
I am also aware of all the work this orchestra does behind the scenes such as recording CDs and film scores for international release. The NZSO’s extensive education and community programmes are making a valuable contribution to New Zealand life – nurturing the artists of the future and taking music to schools, marae, rest homes and hospitals throughout the country. The NZSO National Youth Orchestra is a wonderful preparation ground for tomorrow’s professional musicians.
Every concert is cherished. It’s the NZSO’s relationship with its audiences – charged with the electricity of live performance – which infuses every encounter with pleasure.
I am sure that you share the pride that my colleagues in Government and I take in our national orchestra. Like you, I look forward to superb concerts in the NZSO’s 2011 season.
Hon Christopher Finlayson Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage
As the NZSO embarks on a glittering new season of sweeping classical music, the orchestra brings its hallmarks of quality, history and pedigree to more communities than ever before. The NZSO visits 24 centres during 2011, from Auckland to Balclutha, Wanganui to Wanaka, Tauranga to Gore. Yet, for a national orchestra, each town represents a homecoming and every audience a home crowd. Some of this year’s programme is epic – fully realising the massive symphonic forces that only the NZSO has at its disposal. It is also incredibly diverse, ranging from leviathan symphonies to chamber music. Audiences are invited to enjoy a classic film to live orchestral music, or to singalong to Christmas pops. Master composers are fully represented, and the NZSO will feature a sparkling roll-call of international guest artists eager to experience the friendly musicianship and professionalism for which the NZSO is renowned. The NZSO blooms under the baton of Music Director Pietari Inkinen, commencing his fourth year in the role. The young Finn and his orchestra have attracted international acclaim for their vibrant recordings and this season, their artistry takes flight – soaring higher, and circling wider, than ever before.

Join with us in celebrating the 2011 return of our Music Director Pietari Inkinen in this programme of rich musical delights. In his Fourth Symphony, Mahler turned away from the massive architecture of his other symphonies to create a magical evocation of the spirit of childhood, ending with a heartfelt hymn to sacred innocence. With the richly-glowing voice of New Zealand soprano Anna Leese, returning from an astonishing succession of international triumphs, Mahler’s vision of heaven will beam its radiance in unforgettable splendour. Saleem Abboud Ashkar has become in a short time one of the most soughtafter pianists among the world’s leading conductors – the likes of Barenboim, Muti and Chailly – for his combination of technical mastery and poetic insight. His appearance in New Zealand is a coup in which we take great pride, featuring this exciting artist in one of the great concerti of all time, Beethoven’s mighty Emperor. The concert opens with a stirring fanfare by the great New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn, master of modern musical romanticism.
WHATS THE STORY? “Glory” tells the tale of works by two composers and the contrast between the glory of war and the glory of Heaven. Beethoven’s music vividly originated in the times of the Napoleonic Wars; meanwhile a fallen soldier stands in for Mahler reaching out to an angel after the tragic death of his daughter Maria Anna, to reflect Symphony No. 4’s “Das Himmlische Leben” (Heaven’s Life). The Eroica marks a turning point in the history of music; the work in which the young Beethoven transformed the symphony into a vehicle for the expression of the most profound emotions. Inspired by grand hope and brutal disappointment, Beethoven’s Third Symphony grips the listener with its sense of urgency and deeply felt emotion, presaging the ascendancy of the Romantic vision. Beethoven’s teacher, Haydn, wrote his concerti for leading members of the Esterhazy court orchestra, celebrating the productive
relationship he enjoyed with them over 30 years. The second concerto for cello shows Haydn in galant style, a perfect vehicle for the stylish elegance of Sébastien Hurtaud, winner of the 2009 Adam International Cello Competition. Penderecki’s highlycharged memorial in sound, the iconic Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, opens the concert: massed strings soaring, gliding, colliding with stunning emotive force to evoke the impact of that cataclysmic event and the heroic resilience of the citizens of Hiroshima.

An eagerly anticipated feature of the NZSO’s annual concert seasons, Made in New Zealand celebrates the vitality of our contemporary musical culture, uncovering new delights and showcasing the best of New Zealand’s creative talent. In our 2011 event, we feature a new concerto for piano by the doyen of New Zealand composition, Lyell Cresswell. As he approaches his sixtieth birthday, each new work displays all the craftsmanship, lively inventiveness and technical mastery, which he has attained in a distinguished international career. The concert also focuses on the inspiration of Shakespeare, surveying the stylistic diversity – encompassing the energy of popular music and refinement of classical sensibility – which the Bard’s plays and poetry have stimulated in New Zealand’s finest composers.
“One of the most enjoyable concerts of the year so far” Rod Biss, NZ Listener* “...this was an enterprising concert of worthwhile music that demonstrated the reality of a century or more of serious composition by New Zealand composers; it deserved and got a large audience” Peter Mechen, Middle C* *2010 ‘Made in New Zealand’ reviews
WHATS THE STORY? “Passion” captures the intense yearning and tension told in Shakespeare’s tragic love story Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare deeply inspired three different, enigmatic composers, in both their music and personal love affairs. This visionary tableau is set in St Petersburg, Russia – the iconic home of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev – and evokes French composer Berlioz, who once declared Romeo and Juliet “the supreme drama of my life”. Shakespeare’s powerful tale of a truly great love strikes a chord with everyone who knows the intensity of young passion. It has inspired artists of all kinds – serious and popular – from the 17th century up to Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight novels. This programme explores the responses of three great composers to the story’s intense emotions and tragic passion. For the Romantic composers Tchaikovsky and Berlioz, Romeo and Juliet exerted an irresistible attraction as a source for their exploration of emotional intensity,

driving their quest for new ways of achieving ever more powerful musical expressiveness through glorious melody. In the twentieth century, Prokofiev’s score to the Kirov ballet version of the story brings his insight into the sonic capabilities of a modern orchestra to bear upon some of his richest melodies and dramatic musical ideas. A tour de force for the orchestra, this concert is a display of some of the richest creativity in all classical music and a grand statement of music’s power to move us deeply.
“And so, at the end of the third act, scarcely able to breathe, stifled with a feeling as though an iron hand held my heart in its grip, I cried out, ‘Ah, I am lost!’” Berlioz on seeing Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet

The music of Johannes Brahms bestows its radiant glow upon all who hear it, transcending the categories of classical and romantic to achieve a synthesis of the two streams that have inspired the western musical heritage. His four symphonies and four concerti contain all the ingredients that make orchestral music great: sublime nostalgia, inspired invention, vigorous romanticism and melodic majesty. To experience these orchestral masterpieces in their complete context allows us to reach into the very heart of the music, revealing its profound meaning and perfect construction. All these qualities place Brahms’ music at the core of the life of an orchestra, for in these works, musicians find the basis for displaying the full spectrum of their musical talent and ability. Celebrating the deep musical bonds which unite them, NZSO Music Director Pietari Inkinen will work intensively with the members of the orchestra, and in association with a hand-picked group of outstanding soloists, to attain the interpretive insight and powerful expression which makes it clear why Brahms is among the most revered composers of all time.

Brahms famously cogitated long on his first symphony – for fifteen years in fact – determined to meet the great expectations placed on him as successor to Beethoven. In this he succeeded, and from its first airing the symphony has been hailed for its dignity and expansive musical vision. The Second Piano Concerto attains a grandeur that is symphonic in its proportions, radiating from the moment the French horn introduces the first movement’s noble theme.
16a
Imbued with the spirit of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Brahms’ Second beams with sunny disposition and spirited inventiveness. In his Violin Concerto – ranked among the top four of all time – Brahms transcended the conventions of the concerto as a vehicle for virtuoso display to create one of the pinnacles of orchestral music.
16B
Wellington / Sat 15 October / 2 pm The great German music critic Hanslick praised this symphony as “the most nearly perfect” of Brahms’ four symphonic masterpieces. It reveals a composer relishing his mastery of symphonic form, combining an adventurous new approach with profound lyrical sensibility. In his First Piano Concerto, Brahms unleashed the force of his youthful imagination in a true musical tour de force.
17a
In his final symphony, Brahms summons all his powers of musical creativity and expressiveness in a work which encompasses drama, tragedy, joy, and an impassioned homage to the great music of the German past. The Double Concerto is inspired by the composer’s deep though stormy friendship with the violinist Joachim, and its challenges for two remarkable soloists make it a rare treat in performance.

No less than in his other great symphonies, Mahler explores a rich and exultant range of emotional states in his Sixth Symphony. Written at one of the happiest times of his life, basking in the happiness he’d found with his new wife Alma and celebrating the birth of his first child, the symphony’s “story” is one of many shadings. By turns, the symphony exults in the rapture of love, depicts the innocent games of children at play, and seduces the listener with a restful andante. But coursing through the work is an intriguing darker shading which reaches its apotheosis in the heart-grabbing final movement. The subtitle Tragic which later became associated with the Sixth derives from its conclusion, a stunning depiction of the hammer-blows of fate, contrasting so startlingly with the euphoric climaxes of earlier works like the Resurrection Symphony, but no less powerful to the listener for that. Reclining into our seat in the concert hall, we should become excited at the prospect of embarking upon a rich emotional journey in the company of one of classical music’s great imaginations, writing at the peak of his powers, and a world class conductor renown for his magisterial Mahler performances with the NZSO.
“…a symphony must be like the world, it must embrace everything” Gustav Mahler “No work ever flowed so directly from his heart as this did. We both wept then; so deeply did we feel this music and what it told us of the future” Alma Mahler on the completion of the 6th symphony

One of the modern masters of the conductor’s podium, Pinchas Steinberg takes the NZSO on a journey into the soul of Russian music. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth is the work in which the composer unleashes for the first time the full power of his personal, romantic feelings in symphonic form. It is fired by his deepest emotions, traversing the joys and sadness of life and “fate” before reaching its exuberant conclusion. Triumphant exuberance is also at

the heart of Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, orchestra and soloist uniting to give expression to Prokofiev’s brilliant powers of musical invention. In the hands of the young firebrand Simon Trpcˇeski, the thrilling power of this music is sure to achieve its complete realisation. The concert opens with Mussorgsky’s engrossing sound-picture of a Witches’ Sabbath, a favourite work in the popular imagination ever since its depiction in Walt Disney’s Fantasia.

Indulge yourself in the rich sonorities of combined orchestral wind instruments in this programme of classic works highlighting the exceptional skills of the NZSO wind players and guest Gordon Hunt. Richard Strauss chose the combination of wind instruments for some of his most cheerful and delightful music, and the two early works showcased here display to the full the young composer’s vivid musical imagination in a feast of sunny tunefulness and romantic sensibility.
The ascent of the wind instruments in the 18th century inspired composers to explore the newfound power and richness of colour that they can achieve. Beethoven’s Octet shows off his youthful artistry in pure 18th century classicism, and forms a delightful pairing with the elegance of Franz Krommer’s Partita. From the 19th century, Bohemian master Josef Forster’s superb musical craftsmanship and feeling for melody is on display in his Wind Quintet, a classic of the genre.

The brass section of the NZSO takes its turn to shine in this richly coloured programme of great brass music classics. Encompassing a broad spectrum of time and place, the programme culminates in Handel’s champagne-cork-popping music for a great open-air celebration, paired with the Renaissance Venetian splendour of Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon 10. The first half of the programme takes us to the quintessential Englishness of Elgar’s competition piece, a suite of
movements describing scenes which brass instruments so splendidly evoke: tournament, cathedral, castle and a gathering of knights. Grieg’s music for the funeral of a young friend is stately and solemn, while Richard Strauss’ legendary Festmusik, written in gratitude to the City of Vienna, is one of the most impressive ceremonial works of all time. Don’t miss this rare chance to hear this stirring and splendiferous music.
“The brass section is not just the muscle of the orchestra! It’s capable of intense lyrical beauty, as this concert will show. By bringing it from the back-row to centre-stage, this is brass as you’ve never heard it before!” Vesa-Matti Leppänen, director

The great flowering of music during the Baroque era inspired composers to seek sumptuous sounds and create melodies of pure delight: this concert offers a complete celebration of the brilliance of their achievement. Baroque composers particularly loved the oboe for its melodic richness. Bach’s D minor concerto for the instrument was written during his happy time with the court orchestra at Cöthen. In the work now known as Air on the G String from the Suite No. 3, Bach created one of the most famous melodies of all time. For the Paris Opera, Rameau created music of luxurious opulence and dramatic excitement, and in his Volker Ouverture, Telemann draws inspiration from his insatiable curiosity for the melodies and dance music of different countries and folk traditions, here traversing Turkish, Swiss, Russian, Portuguese and French sources in a rich display of his vivacious, worldly musical style.

The Chinese New Year is the occasion for our reflection on the fertile theme of Chinese musical culture and its growing stature in the world of classical music. Hong Kong’s Perry So, though still in his twenties, is one of the sensations of the classical music world. A protégé of the L.A. Philharmonic’s brilliant Chief Conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, Perry So is destined to take his place at the head of the new generation of classical music’s megastars. Joining him for these concerts will be violinist Tianwa Yang, another representative of China’s brilliant next generation of classical stars, whose concert debuts in the US have been received with rapturous excitement by critics and audiences. Pulitzer Prize-winner Chinese-American
composer Bright Sheng provides the concert’s colourful overture, a nostalgic reminiscence of the mystical and beautiful Chinese landscape. Jack Body based his opera Alley on the amazing life of the New Zealand-born poet of the Chinese Revolution, Rewi Alley, and a selection of arias from the moving and highly-praised opera will open the second half of this concert. Finally, the spirit of the New World is evoked in Dvorak’s resplendent symphonic classic, inspired by his encounter with the peoples of America – the country which represented at the dawn of the 20th century what China might in the 21st – to bring this rich, exotic journey from the Old World to the New to its satisfying conclusion.

Relax and enjoy! The delight of master composers in the brilliant palette of colours, which only an orchestra can conjure, comes to the fore in this diverse programme of music celebrating Spanish vitality and sunshine. At its heart is Rodrigo’s rhapsodic Concierto de Aranjuez, justly honoured as one of classical music’s “greatest hits” for its melodic beauty and gentle sensibility. Xuefei Yang, the first guitarist of international stature to emerge from China’s classical music “boom”, now based in London where her reputation is soaring, performs it. Although Debussy visited Spain only once in his life (to witness a bullfight), the country and its culture held a rich fascination, and in Iberia, his expertise in orchestral colour is fully exploited in the evocation of
three imaginary scenes of the Spanish countryside, a warm Mediterranean night and the atmosphere of a popular festival. Manuel de Falla’s ballet The Three-Cornered Hat was a major success in its performances by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, with choreography by Massine and sets by Picasso. With its rich colours, infectious rhythmic impetus and lighthearted nature, it was hailed as a vital incarnation of the Spanish spirit, uniting folk inspiration with a truly modern sensibility. French composer Gabriel Pierné, a contemporary of Debussy, possessed the same ability to combine lightness with an up-to-date spirit, and his incidental music for the play Ramuntcho, a romantic comedy set in the Basque region, shows his flair for exotic flavours.

In one of the most inspiring and audacious concert experiences you’ll ever witness, NZSO’s Music Director Emeritus James Judd unleashes his creative energy on a selection of works that restores the true meaning of the word awesome. Taking its cue from Stanley Kubrick’s magisterial 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, the programme opens with the startling impression of dawn that has made Also sprach Zarathustra one of the alltime orchestral greats. The movie also made Ligeti’s modern masterpiece of orchestral sonority into a cult classic, and the beauty of Johann Strauss’ evergreen Blue Danube takes on a
new evocative majesty in the context of Kubrick’s imaginative conception. Joining the orchestra to bring the concert to a stunning finale is the virtuosic vocal ensemble, V8, whose superbly-crafted vocal pyrotechnics embellish Berio’s masterpiece Sinfonia, a poetic vision of brilliant originality that brings together Mahler, Samuel Beckett, Martin Luther King and the joyful pop of the original Swingle Singers into a singular musical journey that will leave you breathless and exhilarated. This event is presented by the NZSO, in association with Auckland Arts Festival 2011.

Wellington / Fri 5 August / 6.30 pm Auckland / Sat 6 August / 8 pm Christchurch / Thu 11 August / 6.30 pm Presented in association with the Christchurch Arts Festival
Born and trained in St Petersburg, stellar Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko brings a deep understanding and passion to Shostakovich’s legendary Leningrad Symphony. Written while the composer was trapped with his family in the city besieged and bombarded by the German army, Shostakovich here gives expression to the powerful feelings of rage and determination that his experience provoked, creating a symphony of unyielding defiance against tyranny. Out of the burning intensity of its birth, the legend of
Leningrad took immediate hold and has not diminished today. Preceding the symphony, we hear Rachmaninov’s late concerto, dating from 1926, a work in which the composer modified his innate Romanticism under the influence of the spirit of modernity that surrounded him. Striving for a streamlined simplicity and leanness, the composer’s Romantic spirit is not completely subdued, resulting in a work of great fascination, which reveals Rachmaninov’s questing musical spirit, his musical intelligence and sophistication.

FARR (new commission) BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 9 Choral Symphony
Fritz Lang Metropolis (restored film with new footage and live orchestra) original music by Gottfried Huppertz
New Zealand’s proud tradition of producing great voices continues into the next generation, and four of our modern greats are assembled here to perform the magnificent Ode to Joy. Beethoven’s intensely emotional expression of hope for mankind is the apotheosis of Romantic optimism, a work which your soul needs to hear to gain replenishment and exhilaration. It is paired with a specially-commissioned new work by Gareth Farr, revered among today’s composers for his ability to conjure spectacular and magical sound-worlds. An evening of uplifting music you won’t want to miss.
Fritz Lang’s iconic 1927 film Metropolis laid the foundations that all science fiction films have sought to emulate ever since. Lang’s spectacular futuristic vision achieves its full realisation in this recently restored and completed version. The restoration includes new footage and additional scenes taken from a print held by the New Zealand Film Archive. Conductor Frank Strobel will recreate the original orchestral score that inspired Lang himself. The rich Wagnerian language of Gottfried Huppertz’s music forms a powerful unity with the film’s still-amazing imagery to convey the full might of Lang’s audacious prophecy. This is the way that Lang intended his film to be experienced - with the visceral impact of a live symphony orchestra. Whether you have or have not seen it in any of its previously watered-down versions, you’re in for an astonishing experience!

Auckland / Sat 12 March / 8 pm Pre-concert talks
In one of the most inspiring and audacious concert experiences you’ll ever witness, NZSO’s Music Director Emeritus James Judd unleashes his creative energy on a selection of works that restores the true meaning of the word awesome. Taking its cue from Stanley Kubrick’s magisterial 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, the programme opens with the startling impression of dawn that has made Also Sprach Zarathustra one of the alltime orchestral greats. The movie also made Ligeti’s modern masterpiece of orchestral sonority into a cult classic, and the beauty of Johann Strauss’

evergreen Blue Danube takes on a new evocative majesty in the context of Kubrick’s imaginative conception. This event is presented by the NZSO, as part of the Auckland Arts Festival 2011.

WHATS THE STORY? “Revolution” evokes the science fiction setting of Fritz Lang’s groundbreaking movie Metropolis and captures the rage and turmoil of a city besieged, that inspired Shostakovich’s Leningrad. Like revolutionaries, the NZSO is taking the audience on a dedicated and determined journey toward hope and change. Music will unravel the emotion within the stories - from the divisions of World War II to the future of humankind.
