Masters Series Stirring, captivating, evocative. The old and the new combine in this thrilling season with some of the world’s finest musicians. Master Craftsman Growing up on a farm in New South Wales and whittling boats out of willow meant working with wood came naturally to me. When I first started, I was driven by a desire to own the most beautiful instrument I could get my hands on, one that I wouldn’t be able to afford if I had to buy it myself. I love restoration and I’ve been very privileged to work on some great instruments, one over 400 years old is worth many millions of dollars. I am presently working on a beautiful 250 year old London Bass, owned by the Associate Principal Bass of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. It gives me great satisfaction to give a tired old instrument a second life, to bring it back into the fold! But to me there’s nothing quite like the thrill of performing on an instrument that I have made from scratch. To be surrounded by my “children” gives me a real buzz and it’s a whole new level of music making. At the moment, there are four musicians in the Orchestra who play my double basses - Mark, Christine, myself and Libby (our section’s most frequent casual!). It’s an amazing feeling to be able to contribute to the sound of the Orchestra in this way and hear my basses blend with instruments from all over the world. A few years ago I was offered the opportunity to take over the double bass building business of my mentor and teacher Roger Dawson, a business that was started in London in 1715. As luring an opportunity as it was, I would have had to give up performing to take the business on full time. I’m glad I made the right decision to stay in Perth, as it has meant that I’m able to pursue my love of this craft and continue to play in an Orchestra that I love. Andrew Tait, Double Bass Andrew’s 2011 Pick: Mighty Shostakovich

Shostakovich’s Symphony No.5 was first introduced to me by my high school history teacher Joe Thomas who was a remarkable man. He was an abstract artist, a ceramic student of the famous Shigeo Shiga and he translated Chinese poetry in his spare time. He also had a vast knowledge of classical music. As a teenager I played in a successful rock band. Studying this symphony with Joe turned me onto classical music. Left & Right: Andrew in his double bass workshop.

WASO opens its season with two of the greatest works of the orchestral repertoire and two works from our time and place. Our very own Margaret Blades performing a World Premiere, alongside Australia’s great Paul Dean and a work from his brother. All in one concert, under the baton of WASO’s Principal Conductor Paul Daniel.

Join WASO for one of Shostakovich’s finest symphonies – a favourite among audiences worldwide. A real tour de force, this work is orchestral writing at its most thrilling. Mozart’s sparkling violin concerto is performed by Akiko Suwanai on a 1714 Stradivarius. WASO brings these great works to life under the direction of Principal Conductor Paul Daniel.

Olli Mustonen is not only one of the great pianists of our time, but also a dynamic conductor and an acclaimed composer. In this program we see him in all three roles, exploring music that is at the core of his creative soul.

WASO’s esteemed Conductor Laureate Vladimir Verbitsky returns in a program rich in melody and glorious orchestral sound. Along with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.23, featuring outstanding Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter, WASO will perform works from two Romantic greats. Glinka had great influence over future Russian composers, including Tchaikovsky, whose Symphony No.4 is a fine example of his nation’s music.

Simone Young joins WASO for her ninth season in a relationship treasured by Orchestra and audiences alike. Commemorating the centenary of Mahler’s death, WASO joins orchestras around the world in performing his final symphony, rich in stunning and original imagination, completed by Deryck Cooke – a testament to the astonishing life and work of this unique composer.

Bach and Bruckner – a classic combination. Two spiritual composers at the height of their powers in two majestic works. WASO’s Principal Flute Andrew Nicholson shines in Bach’s second suite. Paul Daniel leads the Orchestra in Bruckner’s mighty Symphony No.7, one of his great symphonic essays and featuring the haunting sound of the rarely heard Wagner tubas.

Roy Goodman thrilled audiences in WASO’s 2010 season with Beethoven’s Eighth, and he returns to lead the Orchestra in three of Beethoven’s orchestral masterpieces. This all-Beethoven program reminds us why this heroic and creative genius’ music remains as vivid now as it was when it was first heard – 200 years ago. Dutch pianist Ronald Brautigam makes his Australian debut in these performances.

Mozart’s Mass is a work of sublime beauty, requiring the highest level of vocal agility. Under the baton of Paul Daniel, WASO and its Chorus will be joined by some of Australia’s finest voices in a captivating realisation of this revered work. We also present a new work from James Ledger – the culmination of his time as Composer-inResidence with WASO.

Classics Series Eight concerts celebrating the joy of classical music. Pieces you’ve known and loved - laugh, cry and swoon with the classics. 300 Year Old Phoenix Rises from the Ashes Playing the Giofreddo Cappa violin is a joy and a privilege and since I’ve been playing it, I feel I never want to play anything else! I had heard about it through a friend and knew it to be an amazing instrument but it was simply out of my price range. An extremely serendipitous conversation with Janet Holmes à Court quickly led to the purchase of the violin and she now very generously loans it to WASO for me to play. I am very fortunate to be still playing this wonderful instrument as it turns out, as last year there was an incident in which the violin could have been lost forever. We were having a BBQ for family and friends at our new home. Somehow the gas bottle ignited and the next thing we knew the house was on fire! After we made sure everyone was safe, including my dogs, Remy and Nellie, it suddenly occurred to me that the violin was still in there! My husband ran back into the flames twice to try and retrieve it but was unable to due to the heat and fumes. Panic stricken, I ran down the street. I couldn’t bear to watch the instrument burn. When the firemen arrived they were informed of the situation and to my profound relief and gratitude they came out holding the violin, safe and sound. The relief I felt was extraordinary. To have lost such a beautiful instrument would have been heartbreaking. I love the mystery behind this violin. It has so much history yet we know so little about it, which is often the case with rare instruments like this. I often find myself wondering about its past. Was it played in the courts of Venetian royalty or in a market square? Where has it been? Who played it? Imagine all the stories it could tell . . . Margaret Blades, Associate Concertmaster Margie’s 2011 Picks: A Night in Vienna & Tina Arena with WASO

Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss is one of my desert island discs, so I’m really looking forward to A Night in Vienna. I grew up being a fan of Tina Arena on Young Talent Time so I’m also thrilled about playing with her! It’s too hard to pick just one!

Be captivated by this enchanting program featuring the brilliant Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud performing Sibelius’ exquisite concerto – a favorite of audiences and performers alike. Rachmaninov’s second symphony is packed with rich colours and stirring melodies, and is simply one of the most passionate of all Russian symphonies.

Under the baton of Giancarlo Guerrero, WASO takes you on a European journey. We begin in Rome with Respighi’s orchestral depiction of four beautiful fountains, followed by Rimsky-Korsakov’s collection of Spanish folk tunes. Orff’s Carmina Burana is extravagant in every sense of the word. With 120 singers in the chorus, this concert is bound to be a highlight of the season.

It’s no surprise that Rodrigo’s glorious concerto was voted into the ABC Classic FM Top 100 Concertos. The composer described his work as capturing “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains”. WASO’s performance of de Falla’s evocative and sparkling score, and Bartók’s unique instrumental showcase will leave you astounded.

Alban Gerhardt makes his debut with WASO in two illustrious works for cello and orchestra. Acclaimed as one of the most brilliant cellists of his generation, Gerhardt will mesmerise audiences as we journey through the music of these European greats. No stranger to the great opera houses and concert halls of the world, Israeli conductor Asher Fisch returns to conduct these performances.

Wagner’s overture from The Flying Dutchman is rich with musical motives depicting the characters found in this romantic opera, and is an energetic preface to Schumann’s only piano concerto. After interval, the Perth Concert Hall will be transformed into a gallery of ten fascinating musical pictures in Mussorgsky’s much loved work.

In the centenary of Richard Strauss’s opera Der Rosenkavalier, we present highlights of this moving masterpiece, packed full of gorgeous tunes, and sung by a stellar cast. Strauss, Mozart and Vienna are inextricably linked, and Mozart’s Symphony No.40 is one of his greatest compositions. Join WASO as we perform some of the most exquisite music ever written.

Alisa Weilerstein’s technical brilliance, incredible sound and passionate playing style will stand out in Shostakovich’s concerto – one of the most difficult in the repertoire. A Polished Sound It’s great fun bringing brass instruments back to life yet it’s something I just fell into doing. I taught myself by reading up on repairs and then just started having a go. I do a lot of services, dent work and resoldering of broken joints. Brass instruments tend to deteriorate with age unlike wood instruments which gain value. I hang on to old instruments and use them for spare parts so my workshop is a bit of a graveyard! I’ve had the odd brass emergency come my way, like when Dave from the Orchestra threw a trumpet at me (that he’d dropped and dented) and needed it fixed in time for the concert that very night. I believe he still owes me a drink! Robert Gladstones, Principal 3rd Horn Rob’s 2011 Pick: Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony

The Eroica is always a great pleasure to play. There are only three horns which is a bit unusual. Sometimes I am part of the section, other times I am off on my own. The highlight for us is the trio in the Scherzo where we launch into an exuberant hunting horn tune, but the final Presto is also great fun with plenty of horn gymnastics!

Destination Perth Life as a musician can often mean living out of a suitcase, with a hotel for a home, and I’ve spent the last year doing so! It’s great to be on the road, seeing new places, learning new languages and meeting new people, but after a while you miss having your things around you. I missed my library, my kitchenware, having things on walls! I’m so happy to be in Perth now and I’m excited about making a home and a life for myself in this beautiful city. I first visited WA in 2009 and fell in love with this place. It is such an incredible part of the world, filled with special places like Margaret River and Monkey Mia. I’m still getting to know the city so I’m spending a lot of time reading the Perth street directory! I might be a long way from Sardinia but I feel lucky to have joined such a wonderful and dynamic orchestra full of musicians who are dedicated to making beautiful music. Giovanni Pasini, Principal Viola Giovanni’s 2011 Pick: Simone Young Conducts Mahler

Mahler 10 is obviously a masterpiece of its own; plus, it has one of the most sophisticated, exposed and yet beautifully shaped viola parts in the history of orchestra music. It gives all the viola players a chance to find a sound where we all merge into a one powerful, yet bleak and sorrowful voice. Simone Young, one of my favourite conductors, will be the perfect match for WASO to deliver a great performance.

The acclaimed artistic director and founder of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra will lead the WASO Chamber Players in some of the most charming music of the Baroque period, all directed from the harpsichord. Revel in the sounds of the Baroque in the glorious surrounds of St Mary’s.

We present a perfect afternoon program of works for string orchestra. Featuring some of the most beautiful music for strings, from Grieg’s joyous Holberg Suite to Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, this is a chance to get up close to our wonderful string players.

Mozart wrote his Clarinet Quintet in 1789, and it has since been a favourite of audiences around the world. It’s a model of restraint and perfection, containing sublime melodies and lush harmonies, and an invigorating set of variations to conclude the work. It is in partnership with the elegant Horn Quintet, rarely heard yet as charming as anything Mozart wrote. A Musical Arrangement I grew up in the Salvation Army and hence had brass music around me from a young age. My dad was a wonderful trombonist and so I developed a love for brass music. I began arranging music for various ensembles during high school, again partly because dad was (and is) such a wonderful arranger. I began carefully transcribing music from CD recordings, writing down exactly what was on the recordings so I could play with it - it was a great way to learn from the masters. I’ve arranged everything from nursery rhymes to television themes to orchestral works. It’s been a thrill to start arranging for WASO! You might hear some of my work in anything from a Kids’ Cushion Concert to a brass ensemble. I love arranging for Cushion Concerts as they get young people listening to and interested in classical music. Joshua Davis, Principal Trombone Josh’s 2011 Pick: Bach & Bruckner

I can’t wait for Bach & Bruckner. These are two pieces (and composers) that don’t often get featured in the concert halls. Bruckner 7 is one of my favourite pieces and this will be my first time playing Bruckner in an orchestra. The Bach will also be a great highlight and with Andrew Nicholson featuring it is sure to be a magical night!

Tina made a legendary career debut as a child star in the late 70’s and has since gone on to become one of Australia’s greatest living icons. Now based in France where she is hailed as a national hero for her unique blend of French, Italian and Anglo music, Tina Arena is a performer with a supreme voice, boundless range and energy, and charm to spare. These performances with WASO are a very special collaboration, celebrating her rich talent and mixing the great sound of the Orchestra with her unique voice and an eclectic mix of songs and styles.

Louis Armstrong. Satchmo. Ambassador Satch. The man who defined American jazz for more than 60 years with his trademark humour, virtuosity and sheer brilliance. The man who appeared in Hello Dolly and High Society, who played the theme music for the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Other jazz musicians wanted to be him; audiences idolised him. He is a true legend in the history of music. And now James Morrison, our very own jazz virtuoso par excellence, pays tribute to this mightiest of jazzmen with some of Satchmo’s greatest hits.

George Gershwin arguably wrote more hit songs in his short life than any other composer. Remember I Got Rhythm? Strike up the Band? Rhapsody in Blue? Fascinatin’ Rhythm? Porgy and Bess? An American in Paris? All from the pen of this great musical genius, who in many ways defined the sound of American music. Join Grammy Award-winning conductor Bramwell Tovey, music director of the LA Philharmonic’s Hollywood Bowl summer series, as we go on a journey through the very best of Gershwin’s music.

Bach to Bikes I enjoy cycling very much. For me it is a form of escapism and adventure. The connection that one has with a bicycle can be continuously refined, and this is no different in violin playing. Sometimes I do find myself inadvertently hearing music in my head while I cycle (which can be a little dangerous because I should be concentrating on what’s in front of me!). I feel that it’s a real privilege to play the violin, because I revere and follow in the tradition of the amazing musicians and characters that have influenced and shaped how we hear the instrument today. There is a certain responsibility in honouring and upholding these traditions while at the same time striving for innovation and spontaneity to maintain the evolution of our art. Mum’s the Word My earliest musical memories are from the cot, hearing music drift from our radio or my mother, Shirley playing piano. She remains an important influence, inspiring, supporting and encouraging me. Growing up with parents as teachers gave me a passion for lifelong learning, and the obligation to give something back and share knowledge. Hearing an orchestra was a rare and impressionable event in my childhood – a 6th birthday Nutcracker, later a free Melbourne Symphony concert. Consequently at age twelve I started viola in addition to piano. Music education and orchestral community events are absolutely vital – that’s where the love comes from and what gives people a taste for music that they may never have heard before. It is my hope that sharing music, through playing and teaching, will inspire people of all ages to remain totally enchanted and addicted to music, as I am. Helen Tuckey, Viola Helen’s 2011 Pick: Cello Fantasy

I’m in a delightful quandary, with so many temptations on offer. Asher Fisch conducting the epic Franck Symphony in D minor will be spellbinding, as will the rollercoaster of enormous emotions in the British Proms program. And all of August will be sensational – Bach, Andrew Nicholson, Simone Young, Wagner tubas, Bruckner and Mahler!

A Collective Voice I have the privilege of working with a wonderfully enthusiastic and dedicated group of singers drawn from all sections of the community. Collectively they love singing as much as I do, which clearly shows in their performances. At all times my aim is to encourage every singer to attain their full potential. The WASO Chorus has been truly rewarding in this aspect – seeing their growing confidence and listening to their increasingly impressive tone and musicianship makes the effort absolutely worthwhile for all of us. Marilyn Phillips, WASO Chorus Director Marilyn’s 2011 Pick: The Music of George Gershwin

I love the energy and verve of Gershwin’s music, the rhythm of numbers such as Fascinatin’ Rhythm, I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise, as well as the gorgeous melancholy of songs like Lady be Good. His songs (invariably with words by his brother Ira) are almost operas in only 32 bars, and his piano music is just terrific!

Private Giving Supporting Your Orchestra Becoming a Patron Please consider joining our community of Patrons. Your contribution makes a difference and you will be warmly welcomed into the Orchestra’s community of Patrons. Donations are fully tax deductible and are proudly acknowledged in concert programs and on the WASO website.

Each year our Private Giving Program becomes more important to WASO’s ability to sustain its vision ‘to touch souls and enrich lives through music’. With a high fixed cost base of over 80 full-time musicians and a busy schedule of concerts and events that touch many thousands of Western Australians annually, WASO relies not only on ticket sales but on significant levels of government funding and corporate support. We are very grateful for this support; however, it is not enough.

To learn more, visit waso.com.au or contact:

Our Patrons Our Patrons support WASO’s vision through their donations, and become part of a special community of individuals who strengthen WASO’s ability to remain the cultural heart of Western Australia. There are many ways to be involved from annual giving, or for supporting a special project, to leaving a lasting gift by making a bequest to WASO. Whichever form the support takes, the link to our Patrons is very important to us and we are committed to strengthening our connection to those individuals who support WASO’s vision through their gifts. We keep in regular contact with Patrons and, throughout the year, we invite them to many different events, including our Friends of WASO events.
