or Hôpital universitaire la Pitié-Salpêtrière, is a teaching hospital in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, part of the Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris and a teaching hospital of Sorbonne University. The Salpêtrière was originally a gunpowder factory (saltpetre being a constituent of gunpowder), but in 1656 at the direction of Louis XIV, it was converted into a hospice for the poor women of Paris as part of the General Hospital of Paris. The Hôpital de la Pitié, founded about 1612, was moved next to the Salpêtrière in 1911 and fused with it in 1964 to form the Groupe Hospitalier Pitié-Salpêtrière. The Pitié-Salpêtrière is now a general teaching hospital with departments focusing on most major medical specialities. ■

SHANGHAI NINTH PEOPLE'S HOSPITAL, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was founded in 1920. In 2015, the Third People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was reorganized and merged into Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. In 2020, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital ranked 23rd nationally, 1st in Plastic Surgery, 3rd in Stomatology, 7th in Otolaryngology, 9th in Ophthalmology, and Orthopaedics nominated. In the 2020 China Hospital Science and Technology Value Research Rankings, the Hospital ranked 14th nation-wide, 1st in Plastic Surgery, 3rd in Stomatology, 7th in Otolaryngology and 9th in Ophthalmology. At the end of 2021, the hospital covers an area of 127.9 mu (approximately 85,267 square meters) and a total floor area of 250,000 square meters, with 2,150 approved hospital beds, 1,000 dental chairs, and 64 clinical departments, including 11 medical technology departments. In 2021, the number of outpatients and emergency patients was more than 4.6 million, inpatient visits exceeding 130,000, inpatient surgeries over 110,000, outpatient surgeries exceeding 180,000, with an average hospitalization period of 5.4 days. Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital has been rated as a role model in ethical and cultural progress for 14 consecutive years municipally and in 2020, nationally. It has also been awarded the National Advanced Unit for Urban Hospital Cultural Development and Shanghai May 1st Labour Certificate for multiple times. ■
