Hozho is a Navajo word described as peace, balance, and beauty. It can also be interpreted as In Beauty I walk and also It has become beauty again. Peace describes our clients, a soft-spoken Navajo couple, and the complimenting relationship between the house + the land. Balance speaks of the relationship between the public + [cedar clad] private spaces within the home. Beauty is the simplicity of the final product.

The simple parti separated public and private through two volumes in the 800 sq. ft space. Clad in cedar, the to volumes demarcated private space allowing public space to flow through the open plan and transition out into the patio. Opening towards Blue Mountain and sheltered from the elements, the patio provided a place for gathering that resonated with the landscape.

the private space is defined by two boxes offset from one another forming living space and circulation
the roof wraps down the south side to protect from the intense summer sun and opens to the north providing shade and views to Blue Mountain
the naked sides are enclosed by a vertical cedar screen which controls the amount of direct sunlight from the east and the west
a relationship is established between the entry to the east and the patio to the north by sheltering void spaces
The material palette of cedar, concrete and aluminum, was used to define the separation of program through texture, shadow and light. The exterior cedar rain screen was used as a double skin to shelter the house from the elements. The aluminum window brows define views, and shade glazing. The hierarchy of transparency places emphasis on the patio, the communal space, while protecting private spaces. The entry brow is used to define the threshold through a reveal of the aluminum cladding. Using a cantilevered slab, the transition between environments is subtly defined by shadow. south elevation

The interior of the house compliments the exterior through simple design decisions. The two private boxes are clearly defined as they are clad in cedar contrasting from the warm white walls. The salvaged cedar brings the exterior material palette of h o z h o house in and warms the interior. Concrete was used inside for horizontal applications including the polished floor and kitchen counter tops. In addition to the three main materials 13-ply Batic Birch plywood was used for secondary design elements.

Lamb Spring Archeological Preserve Center used the first principle and design driving ideas to enhance the user experience throughout his/ her visit. The building is a result of the program and the site itself. It shall serve not only as an exhibit center, but also as a paleontological laboratory. The two different programs drove the design, which then as a result the building was split in two separate wings. The way the wings are oriented is defined by the topography in front of the building. It faces the DIG which is the primary orientation point. The user is able to use ADROIT to navigate from arrival through termination while being exposed to a different experience throughout the visit. A gradual transformation from the current lifestyle to prehistory and back is emphasized. The visitor would pass through the entry, into the gift and coffee shop, then back through history into the exhibit hall. After he/ she is exposed to the essence - the DIG, is brought back to experience the scientific part of the paleontologists. Lastly the visitor leaves through the coffee and gift shop to end the experience.

In the back of the site Wynkoop Street dead ends, so that allows for an exterior garden opportunity. The front of the site faces Wazee Street which is very urban. For those reasons the building design is derived. The concrete shell on the front of the building represents the very urban site, which also follows the city grid pattern across the Cherry Creek. On the other hand the glass box represents the farm lifestyle, which then takes on the grid system of the downtown Denver. That is its primary function. The programs are also laid out in the same way. In front are the reception, and gift shop, while in the back is the actual garden. Where the two meet, is where the restaurant is located in the middle of the building, which is in fact the act of the farm to table movement. Also a patio for the restaurant is located on the roof for visitors to enjoy beautiful panoramic views. The administration space is separated in a side building, which mimics the existing one adjacent to it. The reason for that is that the programs are so different and to also enrich the experience of the user to its greatest.

This is a project I was assigned to work on through an internship at Studio ATM in Sofia, Bulgaria. The firms is involved in a variety of projects, both local and internalional. We were to submit two schematic design proposals for a reconstruction of the already existing soccer stadium CSKA Sofia. This is one of the two ideas which I worked on from the beginning. The main objective of the project is to raise the seating capacity from 20 000 up to 30 000 and include a covered stadium design. Other requirements included providing a reformation of the complex with sports and recreational facilities as well as parking capacity for guests. All of the new ideas are counted toward FIFA’s stadium requirements and regulations.

extending the seating down to the playing field
extending the two side sectors forward for extra seating capacity
Throughout the design process, I evaluated things such as parking capacity, handicapped parking ands preferred parking. Additionally exit evacuation times were calculated to satisfy all FIFA standards. Along with seating visibility angles for viewers, lighting, audio and video came as no exception. All of the design ideas proposed were in correlation with the FIFA 2012 official standards. Additionally, the proposal was to satisfy constraints in relation to local park regulations where the stadium is currently located.

“Home escape from home, Minimalist House, is a project to be built in the region of Ribaritza, Bulgaria. The flat terrain offers exclusive mountain views to the East and South with a main house already on site. The purpose of Minimalist House is to offer the rejuvenation and purification of the mind and soul. A space where one could come to a moment of seclusion and engage in self-consciousness.

The proportions derive from the already given gridlines of the existing house. Boundary between the interior and exterior is created as well as one for the public and the private. Three equal spaces flow from semipublic and semiprivate to privates, giving the house a boundary of establishment in plan and elevation. A sun study was used to enhance sustainability of the house when deriving the design and choosing the building materials. The shell functions as a roof with overhangs allowing sunlight in the winter, and blocking it in the summer. It is to be made of concrete, to serve as a protection again heat in the summer and to sustain it in the winter. The well insulated walls serve as the boundary between the interior and exterior, sustaining confortable living conditions. They are finished with locally sourced wood bringing warmth to the house and in contrast with the shell. The use of space and environmentally friendly building materials makes this house the perfect “home escape from home.
