SHRP 2 projects awarded to ISU CCEE faculty

owa State University transportation engineering researchers are building upon a national program that aims to improve highway safety and sustainability. Four research faculty members and their student teams were recently awarded four substantial projects from the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2).

InTrans Associate Scientist Nicole Oneyear and graduate students will also contribute to the study. Researchers will consider drivers at intersections controlled by stop signs, yield signs, overhead flashing lights, and rumble strips on the approach to intersections. Savolainen also led a successful SHRP 2 proposal to study interrelationships among highway speed limits, road geometry, and driver behavior. This project’s team includes Smadi, transportation engineering master’s student Raha Hamzeie, and InTrans engineer Skylar Knickerbocker. Savolainen studying effectiveness, efficiency of Iowa’s interstate median cable barrier
tudies show interstate highway median cable barriers save lives. Now the state’s transportation officials want to know how well Iowa’s barrier system is working.
Peter Savolainen, a safety engineer at Iowa State University’s Institute for Transportation (InTrans), is determining the effectiveness and cost efficiency of the barrier system. He is conducting a two-year, in-depth analysis for the Iowa Department of Transportation that will help the state determine where to install additional cables.

Cable barriers significantly reduce fatalities and serious injuries,” Savolainen says. “But they also tend to increase the number of crashes that result in minor injuries or property damage.” Although a cable system is less expensive to install than concrete or steel barriers, cables and posts usually require repair when hit by a vehicle. Repair costs, however, are more desirable than head-on collisions, he says. Savolainen, who led a similar research project in Michigan, will examine crash data: including injuries, fatalities, and crash locations before and after the barriers were installed. He also will analyze the cost-effectiveness of the cable barrier system. Savolainen’s research will assist state officials in determining how many more miles of cable will be installed and where it will do the most good. The research project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2017. ore than 200 Iowa State faculty, staff and students, as well as university corporate and government partners, celebrated the dedication of the $5.3 million Bio-Polymer Processing Facility on Aug. 26, 2015. The new facility at Iowa State’s BioCentury Research Farm demonstrates private and public investment in commercializing bio-polymers used in sustainable, more environmentally-friendly production of plastics and asphalt. In 2011, an integral research partnership began between Chris Williams, the Gerald and Audrey Olson Professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering, and Eric Cochran, associate professor of chemical and biological engineering. W
hen the great Hanshin earthquake hit Japan in 1995, Kaoru Ikuma (below, in lab) remembers being without water service in her home near Osaka for more than two months. The new assistant professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering uses this perspective when it comes to environmental contamination. “The reality is the majority of microbes are extremely useful and absolutely necessary for cleaning up the environment,” Ikuma said. Ikuma is constructing microbial communities to facilitate biodegradation flow. “Engineers are in the heart of all the sustainability movements, and we have the tools to bring these groups together to move toward a properly sustainable, environmentallyconscious society,” Ikuma said.

Across Continents CCEE senior places first at international conference
K
yle Younkin (right), a senior in construction engineering, walked away from the GeoSmart India conference with a first place title for his conference presentation. His presentation at the conference, which took place from March 1-3 in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, was titled “Application of LiDAR and Structure from Motion Data for Road Roughness Evaluation.” The research grew out of work Younkin had been doing with CCEE professor David White and CCEE postdoctoral scholar Ahmad Alhasan on a project with the Iowa Department of Transportation to analyze changes in gravel road roughness using laser scanning. Younkin started to consider the price of the machinery they were using ($100,000 for the scanner) and wanted to test out a cheaper option. Using a commercial-grade camera and open source software, he was able to create the same 3D point cloud as the original scanner but for less
than one percent of the cost. Younkin says that allowing him to compare two different technologies so extensively is what made this research unique. “Spatial comparison has never been used this way to measure change in geometry by capture method for roadways. This method opens the door for many future studies in 3D technology in the construction industry.” His work in laser scanning has continued while on a student exchange program in New Delhi for eight months, where he is using this technique as a research scholar to analyze emerging affordable housing systems. He has been affiliated with CII since 2007, having served as a principal investigator for research and as a member of the academic committee. He is particularly interested in teaching students about unique characteristics, project management approaches and construction engineering issues in the engineering, Jeong is honored with the Construction procurement and construction sector, also Industry Institute (CII) Distinguished known as EPC, within the construction Professor Award for consistent efforts and industry. “This sector handles complex, active application of CII-sponsored research multibillion-dollar capital projects in which findings to the courses he teaches. many of our students’ prospective employers thrive,” Jeong says. Jeong joined the ISU CCEE Department as an associate professor in 2012.

National Scholarship FHWA awards top graduate fellowship to Iowa State students
I
owa State University’s civil engineering program attracted two exceptional graduate students as Dwight David Eisenhower Graduate Fellows, a national graduate student award that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sponsors. Ellen Nightingale and Patricia Thompson, both master’s students in civil engineering, bring a wealth of experience to Iowa State’s transportation engineering research program. Each student will pursue research under the direction of Peter Savolainen, associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at Iowa State. The fellowship will grant Nightingale $31,500, which goes toward tuition, a stipend and travel to the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. At the national conference she will present research about high-tension cable barriers on Iowa’s highways – a project that partners CCEE with the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT). Thompson will receive $11,500 and also will travel to the TRB Annual Meeting. She will present research on the development of crash prediction models for urban road segments in a project sponsored by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). his June, students and faculty presented their research to the top minds of their field.
ISU’s Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering hosted the Partnership to Enhance General Aviation Safety, Accessibility and Sustainability’s (PEGASAS) Fourth Annual Meeting. More than 100 participants attended the event, with students and faculty presenting research on topics ranging from airport security to new aviation technology and safety techniques. Ali Arabzadeh (below, right) was one of those presenting at the meeting. His work details superhydrophobic coating of concrete for airport runways. Arabzadeh says that the nano-structural coating his team is proposing for airport runways could help cut down on ice build-up. The coating provides concrete with a different surface texture than concrete without coating. On regular concrete, water may soak through and has the potential to form ice. The coating allows the majority of the water to run off.
FAA CENTERS of EXCELLENCE This spring, the Federal Aviation Administration and Partnership to Enhance General Aviation Safety, Accessibility and Sustainability (PEGASAS) chose Ikkyun Song as a Centers of Excellence Fellow. Song is an ISU CCEE Department structural engineering doctorate student. Dr. In-Ho Cho is Song’s major professor and a faculty member in the CCEE Department.

“If we can take care of removing that ice and stuff from the surface of runways, taxiways and airports, we can facilitate the transportation so passengers won’t need to wait,” Arabzadeh explained. Dr. Kasthurirangan Gopalakrishnan is a faculty adviser for the team. Though the coating needs to be tested further, Gopalakrishnan says preliminary results show the option would be reasonably costeffective. As for his students, Gopalakrishnan says the PEGASAS meeting gives them an outstanding research opportunity. “The PEGASAS meeting is attended by people from academia, people from airports, program managers, researchers,” Gopalakrishnan said. “[Students] are getting good exposure to people from a wide range of disciplines. And they’re going to get feedback on their research.” The group’s principal investigator is Dr. Halil Ceylan, a professor with the CCEE Department. Ceylan is the site director for PEGASAS at ISU.

“Highlights of 2015” recognition
F
or about six years, Iowa State University Associate Professor Simon Laflamme has been researching soft elastomeric capacitors, or SECs.
This May, that research was recognized. Laflamme co-authored the paper “Network of flexible capacitive strain gauges for the reconstruction of surface strain.” Measurement Science and Technology chose the paper as one of its annual “Highlights of 2015” articles. Stella Lander of Measurement Science and Technology says that there were nearly 1,500 articles submitted to the journal last year. Of those, a little less than 360 were published. But only 23 were chosen as “Highlights of 2015” articles. So what is a SEC? Picture a small square patch. It is made out of a styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene. This is the “skin-type” sensor that Laflamme and his students are researching. Laflamme is developing SECs to use on infrastructure. He says that, right now, engineers rely largely on the “eye-test” to spot maintenance issues. SEC’s could be used to catch those very maintenance issues in turbines and bridges.

owa State Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering graduate assistants Zhao Cheng and Robert Peggar recently earned the 2016 James D. Cooper Student Award from the International Bridge Conference (IBC). Their paper, “Integral Connections for Precast-Prestressed Concrete Girders in Seismic Regions,” deals with accelerated bridge construction (ABC) for seismic regions. Peggar says the practical application of the research is twofold. “It can prevent significant damage to bridge girders during small to moderate earthquakes and prevent bridge collapse when major earthquakes occur,” Peggar said. “To compete and show we do quality work, it speaks volumes I think for the students, for the program that we have and the university,” principal investigator for the project and CCEE Professor Sri Sritharan said. “I’m learning not only engineering knowledge but also the ability to solve complex problems through the research experience,” Cheng said of his research at ISU CCEE. Cheng’s and Peggar’s project is sponsored by the California Department of Transportation.

“You could just see, some of the houses were a complete mess,” Viverito said. “You couldn’t believe [people] were still living in them, when you look next door and [the house] is perfectly fine.”

The construction engineering graduate says tornadoes from 2013 and floods from 2015 left homeowners without insurance to pay for damages. That’s where Associated General Contractors (AGC) comes in. This past semester, members of the ISU chapter of AGC decided they would trade in their spring break for a service trip. Viverito recently served as vice president of the group. He helped organize his seventh and final AGC Spring Break Service Trip. “We worked for four days, sun up to sun down,” Viverito said. That work breaks down to a total of more than 1,200 hours of labor. Viverito added that nearly 30 AGC members volunteered
“I think the opportunity for all our students is to learn how it feels to help another human being in a time of desperate need,” Cormicle said. “We’re always going to find something to do for every fall break and every spring break we can,” Viverito said. “We love it. We’re just not going to stop.”

ourtney Towles served as the Missouri Zone vice chair this past year. This position is on the regional board and oversees all National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapters in the states of Missouri, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota. After she graduates, Towles plans to continue to be involved with NSBE in a professional chapter.

Iowa State won the commercial, design-build and heavy highway divisions, and placed second in the specialty contracting division. They competed among 168 students from 28 university teams based in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. BRING ON THE Cyclone Energy comes full circle in Green Energy Challenge
I
n 2009, a five-person team of students from Iowa State’s civil, construction and environmental engineering department decided to participate in the Green Energy Challenge. The students, who were members of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), chose Edwards Elementary as the subject of their proposal. Eight years and eight competitions later, the 2016 ELECTRI International Green Energy Challenge Team, which is sponsored by the Iowa Chapter NECA, is back at Edwards Elementary. The team is now 12 members strong. It’s officially named Cyclone Energy. And it’s on a winning streak.
Humble beginnings
When that first group began working on its Green Energy Challenge proposal in 2009, the students were focused on assessing sustainability at the old Edwards Elementary in Ames, Iowa. The facility, which was replaced with a newly-constructed building in 2014, contained a number of old systems the students had to evaluate.
Gaining momentum
Margaret Holt, a graduate in construction engineering, joined the 2013 team. “I knew absolutely nothing when I first got involved,” Holt recalls. In 2014, the team placed second in the written proposal. Then finally, during the trip to the Chicago National Convention, Cyclone Energy got its long-awaited first-place win.
2015 competition
The 2015 Cyclone Energy team buckled down for the written proposal that year. Each team member is estimated to have put more than 100 hours of work into the project. Iowa State’s proposal placed first that year. The 2015 National Convention was in San Francisco. The team put hours into perfecting the presentation – including the question and answer sessions. “We got first place!” Hartmann said. Britta Sortland, a December

Beyond the proposal, the team is required to work in outreach activities with the school, the community in general and local NECA contractors. “We know we can do it, and we’re doing everything we can to make it happen,” Holt said. “It’d be great to keep our [winning] streak going while also helping out Ames schools.”
This year, the subject of the competition is “Eco-School Business Development.” The team will be evaluating the newlyconstructed Edwards Elementary, and its proposal will include an energy audit of the existing systems, recommendations for improvements, an analysis of the lighting system and suggested updates, and a design for a small solar array with educational 2015-Iowa State University’s NECA Team earns capabilities. Roads To Rome
Transportation engineering takes students, faculty to Rome “Going to a different country and gaining that knowledge is incredibly insightful.” Civil Engineering Student Grant Albansoder
W
hen it comes to engineering, Chris Williams knows history tends to lead to Rome.
“Engineering in its infancy started back in B.C.,” the Gerald and Audrey Olson Professor in Civil Engineering explained. “If you look at Greek and Roman societies, that’s how they flourished and grew. It was because of those basic engineering principles.” Photo courtesy Peter Savolainen
So to study transportation engineering, Williams and fellow faculty decided to show students Rome first-hand in a study abroad opportunity. Peter Savolainen is an associate professor with the CCEE Department, a researcher at ISU’s Institute for Transportation and an organizer of the study abroad trip. Through the experience, he says students gain a global perspective. “It’s really been a big emphasis across all areas of engineering,” Savolainen said. “Everything’s becoming more global. I think it’s really important that students get an international perspective.” Grant Albansoder is a civil engineering student with the CCEE Department. Gaining experience while also studying abroad? Albansoder calls that a win-win. “It’s so important for us to go into the field and learn things from first-hand experience,” Albansoder said. “So going to a different country and gaining that knowledge is incredibly insightful.” He sees this trip as a choice career-building opportunity. “I think just going into unfamiliar territory and learning different methods to achieving the same goal is invaluable knowledge in any industry,” Albansoder said. “Seeing how they design their roads and their buildings and their bridges and comparing that to ours helps us appreciate their culture as well as our own.” Students and faculty from ISU’s CCEE Department traveled to Rome in May. They toured engineering marvels like the Colosseum and Pantheon (pictured above). They attended engineering workshops and took in site visits of Rome’s newest engineering projects. CCEE students sweep awards at regional, national Intelligent Transportation Systems contests

ranamesh Chakraborty works with massive quantities of data from freeway sensors. He knows that real-world analysis of data presents challenges.
“It’s a huge amount of data that we have to tackle,” Chakraborty said, describing his work. “We are talking about terabytes of data. We need new technologies, new processes to handle this data.” This May, Chakraborty won the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) America 2016 San Jose Student Essay Competition. His essay, “Big Data Analytics and Its Role in Freeway Incident Detection,” detailed his work using data from freeway sensors to detect traffic incidents.

Tingting Huang won the ITS Heartland Student Competition for her poster, “Statewide Evaluation of Radar Sensor Using Self-Health Monitoring Techniques.” In her research, Huang evaluates freeway sensors and the quality of the data those sensors are providing agencies and engineers. Tim Barrette, a CCEE doctoral candidate, won third place in the ITS Heartland Student Competition for his poster, “Data Driven Performance Analysis of Dynamic Message Signs.” Barrette is working to find ways of assessing the performance of the electric road signs drivers see. Huang, Chakraborty and Barrette are working with fellow students at Iowa State University’s (ISU) Institute for Transportation (InTrans). ISU Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) Associate Professor Anuj Sharma co-leads the Center for Transportation Research and Education’s Realtime Analytics of Transportation Data Laboratory (REACTOR) at InTrans and works with all three students. In the lab, Sharma and his team constantly work with the data analysis for which the three students are being recognized. “Our whole group, they are not only deciding what platform to use in the big data domain,” Sharma said, explaining the team’s work. “They are also maintaining the [high performance] cluster themselves, and they are then using analytics, using that cluster so that these questions can be answered relatively easily and relatively quickly.” The ITS America 2016 San Jose Student Essay Competition is sponsored by the Southwest Research Institute. he Iowa State University student chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) traveled to San Francisco April 5-8 to compete in the 2016 Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition.

To be invited to the international competition, the Iowa State team first wrote a design proposal consisting of architectural details, a structural analysis, a geotechnical analysis, an economic analysis and a predicted structural behavior. Iowa State professor wins American Society of Civil Engineers Construction Management Award
D
ouglas Gransberg (right), a professor of Iowa State’s Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE), recently accepted the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Construction Management Award. The award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of construction management as a practitioner, educator or researcher. Gransberg’s research focuses on streamlining the procurement and project delivery for mega-projects involving infrastructure such as highways, ports, railroads, and water supply facilities. His work is notable and has been cited on several occasions, including when his research on complex project delivery was cited in a transportation bill President Obama signed in 2012. Recent ConE graduates provided the IAC guided tours of the U.S. Bank Stadium (future home of the Minnesota Vikings). Following the tours, we interviewed Mortenson’s senior management and our recent graduates, focusing on; ‘Are ConE students being prepared to participate in large, high profile, technicallyadvanced projects?’ The feedback received from these interviews provide professional and technical input to strengthen the ConE program and insure we are meeting the needs of the construction industry.

he Civil Engineering External Advisory Council met in November 2015 and April 2016 to continue our dialogue with staff and students. This dialogue is how the council expands our understanding of procedures, practices and improvements being made in the civil engineering department at ISU. Highlights of the meeting are as follows: For our November meeting, the Civil Advisory Council met with the Construction Engineering Advisory Council for a tour of US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. This is the future home of the Minnesota Vikings Football Team. Mortensen Construction was very generous in giving our groups walk-through tours of the facility B.S. CE ‘82 and hosting our groups for our full day of meetings the day after the tour. At that meeting, the civil advisory group listened to a few updates from staff and ISU Foundation personnel. We then began a strategic planning process. We listed what our board felt are strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Our intent as a council is to have this be a working document that we monitor and adjust as time goes on. As a council, we want to be very responsive and supportive of the staff and administration of the ISU Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department. The April meeting consisted of more work on the strategic planning process, including a review of ABET accreditation processes and what ISU needs to do to prepare for this process. We then had presentations by several senior design groups on their capstone projects. It is always fun to interact with these students, to see how advanced they are, and to give them candid feedback on their final product. After the presentation, we had a very open discussion period with the students and got feedback about what they felt ISU is doing right and what could be done to improve things.
