KEYNOTE: Biometrics ready to impact mobile authentication Biometric is a mature technology and the number of published patents decreased since 2008. Nevertheless, it seems that this technology is not massively deployed due to lack of education or unrealistic perceived threats. Recently, major handsets manufacturers’ developments prove it is time for biometrics to become a mainstream technology enabler to facilitate authentication. Most new high-end mobile devices will be equipped with biometric features, as original equipment manufacturers want to be seen as innovative companies by promoting disruptive technologies. Rising to the challenge – how retail banks are deploying biometric technologies in a changing world In this presentation, Anthony Duffy of Fujitsu will look at the use of biometrics in British retail banking and other markets; will highlight key financial and other organisations which are deploying biometric technologies; will highlight Fujitsu’s palm vein and iris recognition technologies, explaining how they work; and will look to the future, particularly regarding how we expect biometric technologies are set to develop and change financial services and payments markets over the coming years.

Usability, Accessibility and Acceptance: Understanding Biometrics from the user’s perspective Users want alternatives to the overwhelming workload of managing multiple, secure passwords. Many believe that biometrics will relieve them of this burden, while others point to the alternative costs associated with biometrics such as privacy erosion and fear of their biometric being irreplaceable if stolen. Users will expect a 100% acceptance rate of themselves and 0% false acceptance rate. They will not necessarily understand the nuances between failure to acquire and failure to authenticate. This talk will explore the multitude of factors which influence user acceptance of biometrics.

Handling the risk for loss of privacy: how can we do that – and why should we?

The source from which we extract biometric data cannot be altered or deleted. The direct link from biometric data to an individual thus implies a serious risk for gradual loss of consumers’ and citizens’ privacy. Today, easy and affordable access to personal and sensitive data, to storage and computer power, advanced surveillance devices and to billions of data on social networks provide us with an unprecedented possibility for exploring and exploiting information about individuals. Turning this into a benefit for both states and citizens, businesses and consumers, is dependent on our ability to introduce measures aiming at mitigating privacy risks and preventing negative impacts on the fundamental right to privacy and data protection.
