Digital Eye Strain

Spending too many hours staring at a screen can be bad for your eyes

The increasing use of digital screens such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and televisions can have an impact on our eyes. Staring at a screen for a prolonged period can cause eyestrain, dryness, and irritation, which are commonly known as computer vision syndrome or digital eye strain.

There are several factors that contribute to digital eye strain, such as the blue light emitted by digital screens, glare, and flickering screens. Blue light is a high-energy light that can penetrate deep into the eye and cause damage to the retina, which may lead to digital eye strain and other eye problems. Glare and flickering screens can also cause eye fatigue and discomfort.

To reduce the impact of digital screens on our eyes, we can take several measures such as taking regular breaks, adjusting the screen’s brightness, and reducing glare by using an antiglare screen or adjusting the lighting in the room. Additionally, we can use specialised glasses that filter out blue light or use software that adjusts the color temperature of the screen to reduce the amount of blue light emitted. It’s also important to maintain good eye hygiene by blinking frequently, using lubricating eye drops, and adjusting the screen’s position to reduce strain on the eyes and neck. Regular eye exams with an optometrist or ophthalmologist can also help detect and treat any vision problems caused by excessive screen time.
