Festive Hamilton
by Ian Coles
Although one of the world’s smallest capital cities, Hamilton must rank among the most enjoyable
Centrally located with a Hamilton has been in existence since the 18th century. However, it wasn’t until 1815 that it became the governmental as well as the business capital of the Island.
Hamilton takes up fewer than 200 Texas or a small farm in Europe. It is scrupulously clean and, thanks to its string of fragrant pocket parks, unusually green and leafy.
By the standards of business cities worldwide, it is idyllic.
It is surely no exaggeration that any service you might need is less than 10 minutes’ walk from anywhere else.
The Hamilton Corporation, under the leadership of an elected Mayor, The Corporation is responsible for the streets, the docks, sewerage, garbage, parking, open spaces and more, including many exciting events throughout the year. Here are just a few of the highlights. For full details visit: www.cityofhamilton.bm

CUP MATCH July 28 and 29, 2022 The island stops for a two-day cricket match. Thousands gather to watch the game, eat, drink, socialise and try their luck at Crown and Anchor gaming tables.
There’s a morning march from Union Square in Hamilton. After speeches by union and political representatives, there is musical entertainment and refreshments. A special service takes place at the Cenotaph on Front Street in the morning.
CHRISTMAS DAY Bermudians celebrate Christmas in a big way with a family feast of turkey.
Many families throw their homes open to family and friends for a ‘stop by’ and of course food and refreshments. The gombeys will also be out, so listen for the beat of that drum.
In Bermuda this may mean anything from a quiet day with family to further revelry.
