WinterTIME Each year, you hear the grumbles – the off-season is not an off-season anymore. It’s so short, if you get distracted for a moment you’ll look up and there will be 200 riders careening down an ancient sector of cobbles – the spring campaign well under way. The season is long: it extends from the middle of January to the middle of October. There are only three quiet months left for race-weary riders to enjoy the quiet company of their own breathing or the joking banter of a stress-free training ride, where talk turns from vacation stories to how soon they’ll be battling a couple hundred co-workers for a chance to do it all over again the next year.

Winter is a time when those margins can be built, broadened, or, conversely, lost. Winter is a time for focus – a search for hitherto untapped capabilities hidden somewhere in the deep recesses of a body that yearns to be carved and whittled still further. Winter is a time to cultivate the rider’s engine by fertilizing, watering, and nurturing the lungs, heart, legs – the whole body – in a quest for improvement that is found only through the never-ending repetition of rides on dreary winter days. With tans from far-off sunny beaches freshly painted on powerful frames, the GarminSharp riders returned from their late-October vacations rejuvenated and ready for the long winter ahead – plying their trade on muddy lanes, cobbled climbs, and lonely roads.

“We shot the riders on the roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen, Paris-Roubaix, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.” This year, Castelli opted for a different plan than the normal catalog shoot scenario. This year, we stepped back. We observed the riders at work. We shot four sets of Garmin-Sharp riders on the roads of three of the sport’s most hallowed and coveted Monuments – the Ronde van Vlaanderen, Paris-Roubaix, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège – and in northern Spain, in Girona.

We didn’t interfere – theirs was a normal day on the bike. We merely shot the riders building for the looming challenges, preparing for the year ahead, exploring the roads they’d fly down in anger only a few months in the future, chasing ghosts and dreams.

“The riders explored the roads they’d fly down in anger only a few months in the future, chasing ghosts and dreams.” In Flanders, Martijn Maaskant and Sebastian Rosseler rode the punishing finale of the new-look Ronde finishing circuit and then headed over the border into Wallonia for still quieter, steeper, and harder roads. Along the desolate cobbled farm paths of France’s Département du Nord, Johan Vansummeren retraced his victorious pedal strokes from almost two years ago when we rode to the Roubaix Velodrome from the Arenberg Forest. In the quiet woods of the Ardennes, Michel and Raymond Kreder were joined by Thomas Dekker for a day in the hills.

Before packing our gear and ending a weeklong photo shoot, we flew down to the Mediterranean sea to visit David Millar and Dan Martin in Girona, northern Spain, which is home to some of the world’s best pro cyclists.

At a typical shoot, there’s always that initial uncomfortable meeting when a bike rider or two or three are tossed together with two foreign photographers whom they’ve never met before. We chat from the back of the car, we laugh while crouched in muddy fields, they chide us about our awkward positions, we joke about the day, and as the work nears completion and both sides do what they need to do, a certain comfort sets in, and it doesn’t feel so much like work anymore. It feels like you’re hanging out with people who could be your friends – if only you had more time.

7 TIMES MORE AIR PERMEABILITY

Our existing winter jackets use the best membrane fabrics on the market but still we find ourselves wanting more breathability. That’s why we invented the 7x(AIR) fabric. A brand new fabric with engineered air exchange to keep you warm and dry even at maximum effort levels. It allows 7 times more air permeability than the fabrics used on our Windstopper® jackets. AIR PERMEABLE We start with a fully wind- and waterproof external layer and then quilt it to a microfiber fleece inner layer using the trapunto technique. The

resulting wind resistant fabric essentially eliminates wind chill, but the stitch holes give just the right amount of air permeability. You get a continuous exchange of air on the inside of the garment that carries away moisture much better than fully sealed fabrics. Standard windproof fabrics rely solely on diffusion for breathability, meaning that you have to have a build-up of moisture on the inside before they start to breathe. 7x(AIR) adds convection -- a small amount of air exchange that carries away moisture and keeps you dry.

WARMTH AND STRETCH Our trapunto process creates a high level of stretch so we can give the garments a close-to-body fit, resulting in a warmer jacket by limiting the air flowing on the inside of the garment. Insulation is built in through the microfiber fleece that’s quilted to the outer fabric. INNOVATION 7x(AIR) is the result of Castelli’s continual focus on rider’s needs. A BIT OF FRESH AIR MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE The Elemento 7x(AIR) Jacket was made for cold weather riding, keeping you warm and dry. The revolutionary 7x(AIR) fabric is 7 times more air permeable than our Windstopper® fabrics so we build this jacket with 100% protection front and back. The 7x(AIR) fabric is so breathable that we’ve only covered about 50% of the jacket with this fabric, creating venting zones throughout the jacket.

The extreme stretch of the fabric means that we could cut it slim. This actually makes it warmer since there’s less unwanted air flowing on the inside of the garment. Pockets are external, so they’re easy to access in every condition.

We built this into a jacket that’s designed for those fivehour winter training rides where you’re planning your July conquests. But it works equally well for the one-hour lunchtime ride that you manage to sneak into your busy day, since it only needs a base layer underneath and it’s ready to go. There must be a downside, right? We definitely wouldn’t take this out on a rain day since rain will come through the quilting stitching, though the fabric is DWR treated and will shed light spray.

WHEN BREATHABILITY IS PARAMOUNT If you’re lucky enough to live in a place where winter isn’t all that cold, this is your jacket. The Mortirolo is basically a jacket made in two parts. The front uses our Windstopper® X-Fast 2 fabric to provide total wind protection and water resistance. However, cyclists living in temperate climates don’t require full windproof coverage so the back of the Mortirolo is made from our Warmer fabric to keep you warm while wicking moisture away to keep you dry. DIAL UP THE INTENSITY This jacket is based on our Garmin-Sharp Team issue Windstopper® winter jacket, but for some climates and some people that jacket is just too warm. So we’ve swapped out the fabric on the back, substituting Warmer for Windstopper® so you get a lot of breathability and effectively raise the temperature range of the jacket by 5° or so. We’ve also used this in colder temps with an extra base layer, and we think you’ll like how it lets a lot more moisture escape when you start high-intensity training for those early season races. Functionally, the result is like our perennial favorite Mortirolo jacket, but with a sublimated graphic and pro team cut.

Elemento technical information, page 16-19. A BIT OF FRESH AIR MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE We use the best winter membrane fabrics on the market but still find ourselves wanting more breathability. That’s why we invented 7x(AIR). We start with a fully wind- and waterproof external layer and then quilt it to a fleece inner layer using the trapunto technique. This results in an extremely stretchy wind-resistant fabric, but the stitch holes give just the right amount of air permeability. The result is a continuous exchange of air on the inside of the garment that carries away moisture much better than fully sealed fabrics.

We built this into a jacket that’s great for long rides when moisture management is a must, but it works equally well for the one-hour lunchtime ride that you manage to sneak into your busy day since it’s extremely warm and only needs a base layer underneath and it’s ready to go. There must be a downside, right? We definitely wouldn’t take this out on a rain day, since rain will come through the quilting stitching, though the fabric is DWR treated and will shed light spray.
