PERFECTION IS A STATE OF MIND When Eddy Merckx stopped racing in 1978, he was just 33 years old. He’d done and won everything there was to win, but still he wasn’t satisfied. Eddy has always been a perfectionist when it comes to bikes. Even during the years when he cycled in a team, he was often to be found in the workshop testing, checking and making sure his racing bikes were ready to roll.

Frame

The difference in anatomy (between men and women) means that it’s easier – and more comfortable – for men to lie flatter on the bike when racing; their weight is fully supported by their pelvic bones. For ladies, it’s a different story. The same position leads to chaffing and pressure on the soft genitalia tissue. Compensating for this often leads to sore shoulders and a stiff neck and this can only be alleviated by creating a more upright position, so that the pelvic bones take more of the weight.
