Dear Readers, 2015 is a very special year for us: tout terrain will be 10 years old! A 10-year company anniversary is a good time to look back so that we can share all the very special events, successes, and innovations with you. It is also a good time to pause and ask the question: Which innovations over the last few years were really lasting, and which were just a fashionable trend? What is it that makes a bicycle not just good, but beautiful? We can proudly say that over the last 10 years, we have implemented a number of innovative ideas and introduced new technology that make a lasting contribution toward making biking better. Innovative components like our USB power supply The Plug, disk brakes on touring bikes, and belt drive were all unimaginable 10 years ago – today they are virtually standard. We also focus on innovation when redesigning our models, developing detailed solutions, and when thinking about our bike accessories. One of the technical innovations that has brought the most benefit to bikers is the toothed belt. Initially a trend among single-speed cyclists, belts have become a part of the cityscape. In 2015, we will go yet a step further and make almost all our models belt-compatible. The fully redesigned Silkroad is another result of our innovative efforts. Our classic touring bike continues to impress with its sleek elegance, dynamic feel, and technically advanced features. However, besides looking back, there‘s still a more important question: What does the future look like, and where do we see ourselves and our products? There are lots of exciting issues ahead, and one of the things we will be focusing on in coming years is urban mobility. Our universal solution for everyday transport is our Metropolitan Shopper, which is equipped with two Racktime system racks and lots of features, making it possible to convert it as you like from a shopping bike to a kindergarten bike or even to a trekking bike in a few simple steps. In this spirit, we hope that the next 10 years will be just as exciting and successful for us, and we will continue to abide by the philosophy that Coco Chanel once so aptly articulated: «Fashion changes – style remains.» We will continue to invest our energy and effort into creating innovative, beautiful, timeless products that will guarantee you lots of cycling pleasure. PRACTICAL TESTS
MORE THAN JUST COLOR
Every tout terrain bicycle is custom-built. We don‘t have a production line or robots. All of our assemblers make bicycles entirely from start to finish and thus see what they have «created». Our environmentally friendly, in-house powder coating facility allows us to design a special product and to fulfill many requests. Each day, a committed team of cyclists creates products bearing the label «Made in Freiburg».
Product tests are an important component of product development. That‘s why we not only devote lots of time to testing the initial prototypes, but also to testing production products under real-world conditions. These practical tests are highly valuable, as they are carried out over many months by various people under a wide variety of conditions. Our requirements are maximum reliability and ruggedness with minimum maintenance effort. In addition, we perform laboratory stress tests according to established testing standards in order to back up our practical examinations through theoretical tests. We keep in personal contact with many of our customers and thus find out first-hand where our products can still be improved.
Like fashion, paint gives a product an individual, personal touch. However, the finish provides more than just the color. It‘s vital to a bicycle‘s longevity and is subjected to challenging demands, such as mechanical stress caused by daily use and the corrosive effects of road salt during year-round operation. Our in-house facility for finishing technology allows us to set up strict process controls for meeting these requirements and ensuring a consistently high level of quality. All of our bicycle frames and forks are painted in an elaborate five-stage process. The foundation is formed by pretreating the unfinished frame in order to seal and clean the surface, thus ensuring excellent paint adhesion. In the next step, primer is applied, which inhibits the penetration of moisture and provides corrosion protection. The next two process steps, painting and application of the protective transparent layer, ensure an attractive appearance. Finally, the frames undergo a complex finishing process, during which cavity sealing is performed on the frames.
DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN All tout terrain products are developed and designed in Freiburg, Germany, at the edge of the Black Forest. New ideas are generated during daily use, from input provided by our customers, or from suggestions for improvement made by our test riders. The latest software, production expertise, and passion all come together to give rise to unique products. Conducting in-house development means that development times can be shortened and allows original, innovative ideas to be implemented rapidly. Thanks to our inhouse prototyping, we know not only how to produce a product in theory, but also in practice.

Our City Safety concept provides you with solutions for Safety and visibility in road traffic Theft protection According to the bicycle model, you can configure various safety solutions from these categories according to your needs. We can thus provide you with ideal protection for you and your bike. The issue of visibility is an especially high priority for cyclists, particularly year-round cyclists. When cycling in road traffic in autumn and winter and under poor light conditions, you are exposed to risks that need to be minimized. In addition to our high-quality lighting systems, we offer other solutions that increase your visibility in road traffic.

During the day, it is inconspicuous and is not immediately recognizable as such. xoude illuminated Grips: An integrated end cap illuminates the outermost point of your bike, the ends of the handlebars, making you visible in the dark. This allows you to reduce the risk of being overtaken too closely by automobiles. disk brakes decrease braking distances, especially in wet conditions. Theft protection is vital. The only way to reduce the risk of having your bicycle stolen is to take the appropriate measures. In addition to criminal gangs for whom even burglaries are routine, bicycles are often the targets of petty theft. Our goal is not only to prevent theft, but also to recover the bicycle as quickly as possible in the event of theft. We provide the following security options for this purpose: locking is better than not locking: even logical actions are not always carried out. When you’re out shopping, you don’t have time to waste. The perfect solution is an integrated frame lock from ABUS, which can be used on all tout terrain city bikes. you can supplement it with a chain made of hardened steel, which fits neatly and compactly into a special pocket on the bottle holder. Inbuss screws reduce the theft of bike parts. Standard on the seat post, which is particularly vulnerable, and optionally available for your wheels. Outfitting with pitlock tension axles is also recommended for high-value wheels. The specially coded fasteners can be opened only with a special tool.

Besides the steering stop, chromoly fork for disc brakes, and the eccentric bottom bracket with «VBA» for adjusting the belt line precisely, the Amber Road uses the 3-in-1 dropout design. This innovative dropout has a sandwich design that allows the conversion from derailleur shifting to belt drive for the first time, providing maximum drive flexibility. The geometry of the Amber Road was specially matched to the large-volume 28-inch tires, thereby retaining a sporty look while offering the comfort and rolling characteristics of a 28-inch wheel.
Starting in 2015, an XXL Version of the Amber Road will be available for people between 195 cm (6‘ 5“) and 205 cm (6‘ 9“) tall. Both the tubing dimensions and the components have been matched to meet these special requirements. We use the new SuperC for all XXL sizes, which is stronger and more rugged and has disk brakes up to 203 mm.

A HIGHLY MODERN CLASSIC The Silkroad has been our DNA since 2005. It is the touring bike of choice for cycling globetrotters for expeditions. The latest generation has been completely redesigned in order to handle the greatest challenges. Almost all components have been modified as part of the redesign. THE ASPHALT SPEEDSTER Like the Silkroad, the 5th Avenue has also been completely redesigned. It retains its lightness and quickness thanks to the slim 28-inch wheels. With a frame developed specially for derailleur shifting and the resulting weight of only 12.5 kg (27.5 lbs), which is low by touring bike standards, even long mountain stages are no longer to be feared. The foundation is formed by the new frame of the Silkroad touring bike which is fabricated from multi-butted chromoly steel tubing by Dedacciai. The selection of shifter and drive types is extensive, and the Gates® Carbon Drive™ provides the latest technology. The integrated Ergo-Stop steering stop is also included in this model. The wires can be cut relatively short and no longer dangle wildly, but are protected from severing (lighting cables) and are extremely low-friction (shifter cables). The Tanami Road is a largely unpaved highway in the Australian Northern Territory and northern Western Australia. With a length of 1,055 km (656 miles), it is one of the 11 longest roads in Australia and is the shortest route between Alice Springs in the center of Australia and the Kimberley Region. In former times, cattle were driven on this road from the region around the MacDonnell Ranges in central Australia to Halls Creek in the Kimberley region.

The Route des Grandes Alpes is one of the most famous French routes through the Alps to the Mediterranean. It runs from Lake Geneva to the Côte d‘Azur and traverses 16 Alpine passes, including the Col de l‘Iseran, the second-highest Alpine pass at 2,770 m (9,000 feet). FOR HILL AND DALE The new 5th Avenue Xplore has all the ingredients needed for the grand Alpentour or for gentle gliding. Its fascinating features include light, slim 28-inch wheels and a Pinion drive with an optimized center of gravity. The foundation is formed by a frame fabricated from multi-butted chromoly steel tubing by Dedacciai. The Pinion gearbox, a visionary product of German engineering, is centrally integrated into the frame. For this purpose, we developed the special, weight-optimized TBA retainer that makes possible tensioning of the belt or the chain without a chain tensioner or moving the dropout. Combined with a steel frame and on a touring bike, this gearbox is ideal for carefree cycling. With 18 gears, the gearbox provides a wide gear range with extremely fine ratios, giving it the required variety for steep hills and valleys. The central position of the gearbox provides a balanced weight and therefore safe handling. The lower rotating mass of the rear wheel provides lots of riding agility.

TANAMI XPLORE
The Tanami Road is a largely unpaved highway in the Australian Northern Territory and northern Western Australia. With a length of 1,055 km (656 miles), it is one of the 11 longest roads in Australia and is the shortest route between Alice Springs in the center of Australia and the Kimberley Region. In former times, cattle were driven on this road from the region around the MacDonnell Ranges in central Australia to Halls Creek in the Kimberley region.

It‘s the universal bicycle for all long-distance and frequent riders who prefer large-volume 28-inch tires and who appreciate the broad gear range of the Pinion gearbox. We like to call the Tanami Xplore the «big brother» of the Silkroad, as it has the same DNA. It`s the perfect choice for tall people who need different riding ergonomics and who prefer large wheels. The central position of the gearbox makes the riding performance of the Panamericana even more agile. In addition to the Panamericana‘s core features, the Xplore version offers 18 genuine gears with equal gear ratios of approximately 11.5 percent. The combination of a full-suspension touring bike with the Pinion gearbox is ideal, since the chain stay and wheel exhibit greater deflection sensitivity thanks to the reduced unsprung mass and are relieved of drive influences due to varying chain tension starting points.
