Orca is constructed from Toray T700, T800 and M40J fibers. Prepreg carbon sheets are laser cut to minimize excess materials and overlap, and hours of pre-molding ensure optimal compaction with the smallest amount of carbon. A full EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) mold is used to eliminate wrinkles and imperfections.

DYNAMIC STRUCTURE – STIFFNESS The large majority of torsional and lateral loads are handled by the lower spine of the frame. The headtube, downtube and chainstays are shaped to resist twisting and transmit power to the rear wheel. There is no doubt about it, large cross-sections and resistance to flex in the bottom of the frame translate directly to more watts on the road and a sensation that power transfer is instantaneous.

DYNAMIC STRUCTURE – SMOOTHNESS External forces on the frame – cornering stresses or vibration from rough roads – have an effect on control and traction. Studying the way the frame behaves under a rider’s weight is critical to tuning the way forces are transmitted through the upper structure of the frame. The seat stays of the new Orca are thinner, the cross-sections and diameters reduced to give maximum traction and control over rough surfaces without compromising global rigidity. The top tube is robust at the head tube where it contributes to torsional stiffness, but quickly tapers to eliminate unnecessary material. The natural flex patterns created by the carbon layup and minimal bulk of the top tube and seat stays deliver a dynamic, smooth ride that feels like floating over rough roads.

AERODYNAMICS // FREEFLOW

FREEFLOW Aerodynamic forks are typically designed to perform like aero frame tubes - optimized for directional movement through the wind. But the forward rotation of the spokes and today’s wider rims and tires approaching from behind the fork (against the flow of wind as the wheel spins) creates a high pressure/high drag zone. Freeflow spreads the fork legs away from this area to reduce pressure and turbulence. Normal directional aerodynamics remain unchanged but the bike gets faster because the airspace inside the Freeflow fork blades is less chaotic.

MY 2017 ROAD GEOMETRY UPDATES 1. After gathering feedback from our pro teams and racers over the last years, we determined that minor geometry updates were necessary to accommodate new trends and technical requirements. 2. We have changed the trail measurement and reach in some frame sizes in order to achieve the same handling across the size range. 3. To address larger tire trends, we have increased clearance for 28C tires, particularly in smaller frame sizes that had less clearance in the past. 4. Amateur racers or sport riders are looking for responsive racing bikes with a moderate ergonomy. Orca M30, M20 and M20i geometry retains precise race handling with a more linear stack and reach.

TWO ORCAS This new Orca takes the stage during an exciting period. Disc brakes are in the spotlight and we are excited to offer two distinct Orcas - one with traditional rim brakes and one optimized exclusively for disc systems. Orbea has been deeply involved with disc road development and our 2013 Avant was one of the earliest disc brake bikes available. With the UCI’s changing regulations and official evaluation program, we were supplying unique disc-equipped racing bikes to Team Cofidis as early as 2015. So while disc brakes may be new to professional cycling, they are certainly familiar to Orbea. Orca is a culmination of what can be done when nothing is impossible - a .95kg frame and the most technologically advanced Orca ever made. But what about those riders who choose a more traditional path? The rim brake Orca is not an afterthought, it’s been re-shaped into the lightest frame we’ve every offered. Weighing in under .8kg, there’s not a purer expression of racing elegance and simplicity.

Disc brakes can allow you to stop faster. Of course a skidding tire is the ultimate limit of braking power, but with better mechanical leverage and unaffected by cable stretch or rim inconsistencies, discs feel more powerful. They are better equipped to harness the increased traction offered by the wider 25 or 27mm tires run at lower pressures that are becoming commonplace in the modern peloton. Of course these benefits are available to non-racers, reduced stopping distance is a safety boon to any rider.

Disc brake allow more control by gently increasing braking forces in a smoother and more incremental way than rim brakes. Anyone who has struggled with matching the correct brake pad compound to various rim braking surfaces knows the feeling of grabby or inconsistent braking. Disc brakes better handle the broad spectrum between gently feathering the brakes before a corner to dramatically scrubbing speed in a threatening situation.

Disc rotors and pads are not affected by moisture to the same extent as rim brakes. They offer much the same power and modulation on rainy days that they do in the dry, without the delay between applying braking force and actually feeling a change in velocity that is common with many rim brakes. Additionally, there is no worry of overheating the rim and tire during sustained braking, eliminating the possibility of heat-related failures.
