ABOUT AGU Since the inception of the Alkmaarse Groothandels Unie in 1966, AGU has been on the forefront of innovation in bike wear. Our iconic original rainsuit – launched in 1976 as a response to a competition by the Dutch Ministry of Transport – became a mainstay on many a rainy, windswept Dutch street. And when we teamed up with the illustrious Peter Post-led Panasonic Team in 1984, the AGU name became embedded in the hearts and minds of bike racing lovers ever since. This collaboration resulted in a wealth of experience, direct from the best of sources – the professional peloton. This experience was put to good use throughout the years. In 1990, with the company’s support behind her, Leontien van Moorsel went on to win 2 gold medals during the World Championships in Tokyo. Since that pivotal moment, Van Moorsel has ever been of great importance to women’s cycling in the Netherlands.

In 1976 AGU’s Original rain suit wins a prestigious award for the best Dutch rain suit, in a competition organized by the Dutch government to encourage cycling in the Netherlands. The suit goes on to sell more than a million throughout Europe, which is a major boost for the company.

After having supplied the Panasonic, Koga and AGU-Continental teams for many years, in 1996 AGU partners up with Team Rabobank. A memorable episode in Dutch cycling history that would last for no less than 16 years.

In 2018 AGU’s launches an updated version of its original award-winning 1976 rain suit, which then promptly wins another award by the ANWB, thus assuring that AGU’s rainsuits will be a familiar sight on many Dutch streets for years to come.

Through the afore mentioned process of innovation, AGU introduces the first carbon fibre based chamois pads in 2011. Excelling in distribution of pressure and perspiration due to the use of carbon fibres, these antibacterial chamois pads were notable for their comfort and technical look.

AGU starts to supply the kit for Team Panasonic-Raleigh in 1984, its introduction in the professional peloton. Famous names as Steven Rooks and a young Erik Breukink bring the brand to a worldwide audience of cycling fans.

BEAT

AGU starts its support of BEAT Cycling Club, the world’s first professional cycling club. Contributing towards BEAT’s grand ambitions and working together on the development of its performances, AGU is the official supplier of the track- and road team members.

Bike Bags

1974 sees the launch of the ‘cycling pleasure’ theme. From this moment on, AGU focuses on developing practical products that are convenient for everyday riding, such as the first bike bags. Back then, these were made in Japan, whose image was not up to par to how it is today. ‘Made in Japan’ labels even had to be removed from the bags once they arrived in the Netherlands!

Chamois

In 1989 AGU becomes the first company in the world to produce chamois padding from artificial leather, the fabric of which was by then only seen in expensive cars. Marketed as Nalini, these paddings were the result of extensive testing and innovation, a process that would continue to this very day.

Heat

As part of the Fall/Winter 2019 collection AGU releases a thermal jacket with an integrated heating system. This revolutionary jacket for cold weather riding is controlled by a USB-charged battery that provides 3 levels of heating. It’s the first step in a whole new chapter of facilitating riders to be comfortable in any condition, on any road, without losing performance.

The fastest kit possible AGU’s partnership with Team Jumbo-Visma in 2019 raises the bar for performance orientated cycling kit. After a rigorous process of research, development and testing in cooperation with different institutes, a brand new Time Trial suit is launched, which became the fastest kit the team has ever ridden in. The collaboration promptly results in multiple spectacular victories throughout the year, topping all of it with Primož Roglič’s hard-fought Vuelta a España victory. The techniques and materials used in the successful team kit would also trickle down into the consumer collection. 11

PRO LEVEL SPORTS At AGU we have a long history in pro level sports, and the company is still very proud to contribute to the achievements of the teams we support, such as BEAT Cycling Club and Team Jumbo-Visma. Collaboration with these professionals provides valuable insights with which we can continue to enhance our apparel to the highest possible level. The cutting edge technology, fabrics and weaving used for the professionals now also trickles down into the rest of the collections, so riders at all levels are ensured of having the best possible gear at their disposal.

Working with Team Jumbo-Visma’s riders and staff is fundamental to our Research & Development strategy. The collaboration has yielded innovative gear for all sorts of conditions the team is likely to face throughout their winter riding. From a custom-made fleece-lined thermal bib-short to a a full range of accessories to protect their extremities, we offer the riders the means to effectively focus on their performance in all instances without having to worry about external conditions. For the Time Trial skinsuit, we developed and tested a variety of materials and fabrics in the wind tunnel of Eindhoven University of Technology. Incorporating feedback and experiences from those to whom it matters most — Primoz Rogliç, Tony Martin, Steven Kruiswijk, track racer Theo Bos, and their coaches — has resulted in the fastest kit the team has ever had. The cooperation over the year has already proven to be a fruitful endeavor, with fantastic results to show for it. The team kept piling up the victories in unprecedented style, of which we are naturally extremely proud. The riders have also been able to provide us with valuable feedback to integrate in future apparel, which will become available in stores for everyday enthusiast riders all over the world, no matter their level or ambition.

DWR When a fabric is treated with a Durable Water Repellent coating, any (rain)water coming into contact with the material will roll straight off the coating, instead of being soaked up. This prevents your outfit from getting heavy and soggy with moisture. DWR is not 100% water resistant but ensures staying dry during short summer downpours.

Poray Poray membranes were specifically produced by AGU to implement 100% wind- and waterproof protection in our apparel whilst maintaining an optimal level of breathabilty. Poray is measured in 10.000 or 5.000, which refers to the amount of millimeters of water per cm2 the fabric can withstand, also called a water column.

HD II Lenses

With its 99% windproof membrane, the Stormbreaker fabric protects your core from wind chill, but is yet breathable enough to allow for active cooling thanks to the tiny pores. Thus, your body temperature remains within the optimal range for performance. A Durable Water Repellent coating has been added to the fabric so it can easily withstand a short spell of rain.

High Definition II lenses have been developed to enhance colour and contrast in your field of vision. This means the lens yields more vibrant colours, but — perhaps more importantly — it also increases depth perception and highlights features in the surrounding environment that might otherwise go unnoticed. The lens surface has been treated with a Laser blue coating, acting as a Hydrophobic layer: raindrops will bead straight off. It also contains Anti-Fog properties for a clear view of the road ahead.

Polygiene Bacteria that accumulate in wet or damp clothing can create unpleasant odors. Polygiene fabrics are coated with a layer of silver chloride which prevents these bacteria from piling up due to perspiration, so your treasured cycling gear remains odor-free for longer.

To stay dry and comfortable on the bike it is essential to wick perspiration away from the skin. The millions of tiny pores in eVent membranes work continuously to achieve this effect, unlike traditional membranes which only work when have already gotten wet. As a result, eVent keeps your body dry longer and more effective, to support prolonged time in the saddle.

Developed particularly for the US Army, Polartec Alpha is an exceptionally breathable, insulating material often used as a liner. It gets your core temperature to the right values sooner, and keeps it there longer, both during exercise and rest. Perspiration and condensation quickly evaporate thanks to the continually active breathing characteristics of this lightweight and water repellent technology.

The Multi-directional Impact System is a low friction liner which, added to the shell of a helmet, allows the helmet to slide relative to the head. This movement protects the skull against the rotational movement which occurs upon an angled impact. The effect of MiPS has been scientifically proven to decrease the risk of brain injuries.

This ultrafine wind- and water resistant microfibre material creates an air layer with high insulating value, yet remains pleasantly soft to touch. Also effective in compact amounts, thus retaining excellent quickdrying lightweight and packable properties. In addition, it is sustainably produced and easy in maintenance.

Our Heated Technology makes use of a number of warmth-exuding paddings, that can easily be regulated in three settings by a practical knob on the outside. Thus your temperature can be optimized in line with your level of activity. Charged by a small battery which can be removed before washing.

Thinsulate The microfibres of Thinsulate trap air inside the material, thus effectively creating a layer of insulation, that will continue to work even when wet. Only a small amount of Thinsulate used creates advantageous warmth, so clothing can remain compact. And because the material is water-resistant, it will dry up quickly. 17
