to the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2018 WORLD OF BLUEGRASS! Thank you for joining us here in Raleigh, NC, for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2018 World of Bluegrass! For our regular attendees, welcome back. If it is your first time, get ready for a lot of music, an impactful business conference, an amazing Awards Show, and a bluegrass festival like none other. I also want to thank the City of Raleigh, its Local Organizing Committee, and Wake County for their strong partnership in delivering this unmatched weeklong bluegrass celebration. All of our sponsors, including Chiesi USA, PNC, Virginia Tourism, and Larceny Bourbon, deserve a huge round of applause.

Without them, much of what we offer during WOB would not be possible. Lastly, thanks to the many people who take their association membership seriously by spending untold hours helping make the IBMA and World of Bluegrass a success. This includes our industry partners, committee volunteers, the IBMA Board of Directors, and the talented and dedicated staff who willingly carry a heavy load because they care deeply about this association.

The IBMA has undergone some very exciting changes in the past twelve months. Since we last gathered in Raleigh: •

The association became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that can now offer tax-deductible membership dues and accept tax-deductible charitable contributions in support of the many efforts underway and planned for the future. This enhances the association’s ability to add resources to fulfill our mission to connect, educate, and empower bluegrass professionals in addition to raising the appreciation of bluegrass music worldwide.

We converted and enhanced the IBMA website so it is more intuitive and informative for members and our other visitors.

We launched a new online membership system that gives members the ability to update their profiles, check on membership status, and renew as needed.

We have enhanced our coordination of fundraising for the IBMA Bluegrass Trust Fund, the IBMA Foundation, and the IBMA itself.

We announced that the IBMA’s World of Bluegrass will remain in Raleigh through 2021! Through our close partnership with the City of Raleigh and Wake County, we were able to make sure the association remains strong and can continue to offer the bluegrass community this amazing bluegrass week. Thank you to everyone with the City of Raleigh, Wake County, and especially Loren Gold and William Lewis for their tireless efforts as LOC co-chairs in securing this contract extension.

This year’s World of Bluegrass has so much to offer each of you.

Please immerse yourself in all of it.

Please wake up early during the conference and attend the carefully prepared educational sessions.

Jamming is a blast, but professional development is what will improve your career. Don’t miss the Awards Show; it is a wonderfully emotional and entertaining night for everyone. And, please check out the music everywhere, from the Ramble venues during the week to the festival on the weekend. The Main Stage lineup in the Red Hat Amphitheater is amazing, with collaborations you won’t see anywhere else.

CONFERENCE THEME This year’s conference theme, Branding Bluegrass, cuts to the heart of how we all present ourselves and our work to the world. From front porches and kitchen tables, to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, and from there around the world, bluegrass has become a globally recognized phenomenon, a style of music whose identity rings loud and clear - and high and lonesome.

The strength of this image inspires and challenges bluegrass professionals to make our voices heard; to tell our own stories to fans old and new; to communicate our brands. We must consider how every decision we make in art and business shapes our brands and the stories we tell about ourselves, both individually and as a genre, and how strategic decision-making can ensure that our stories resonate with the people we want to reach while remaining true to our roots.

Leadership Bluegrass holds a Master Class, open to all Leadership Bluegrass graduates on Tuesday, September 25, from 8-11 am. BLUEGRASS RAMBLE The Bluegrass Ramble is IBMA’s innovative showcase series in club venues in downtown Raleigh.

With over 200 showcase performances, the Ramble is the premier platform for introducing talent and new material to the bluegrass community. IBMA Official Showcase Artists – 30 bands selected from well over 100 applicants – will all perform at the Bluegrass Ramble. Venues include: Lincoln Theater, The Pour House, Kings, Architect Bar, Vintage Church, and the Raleigh Convention Center. Stream or download a free mixtape of our Official Showcase Artists. BLUEGRASS RAMBLE EXPRESS

The Bluegrass Ramble Express is a free shuttle service that will get you where you want to go!

The Bluegrass Express bus will take you to all the Bluegrass Ramble showcases for free from 5:15pm to 2am, Tuesday through Thursday, with the route typically taking 10-15 minutes to complete. Pick up a Bluegrass Ramble Express map at registration to find all the venues and stops. Main pickup location: Raleigh Convention Center.

TOWN HALL MEETING and CONSTITUENCY MEETINGS IBMA is not an office in Nashville. IBMA is all of us, more than 2000 people in countries around the world who are passionately involved in the business of bluegrass music. Don’t miss your opportunity to sit down with your board rep and others in your constituency at the Constituency Meetings. The Town Hall Meeting on Thursday morning is where the entire IBMA Board of Directors and IBMA’s engaged membership gather once a year. It is your opportunity as an IBMA member to meet and hear from the Board, and to bring your concerns, suggestions, kudos, etc. This year’s Town Hall Meeting is the only event scheduled at this time on Thursday morning, in order to allow everyone an opportunity to attend.

MOMENTUM and SPECIAL AWARDS LUNCHEONS The Momentum Awards and Showcase Luncheon begins promptly at 11am on Wednesday. These awards honor those making an impact on bluegrass early in their careers. Please arrive before the program gets underway. Front rows are reserved for those who need access to the stage. The Special Awards Luncheon, beginning promptly at 11 on Thursday, September 27, features two showcase bands; arrive early to hear them! The Special Awards recognize outstanding achievements made in the non-performing areas of bluegrass. Recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Awards will also be recognized during Thursday’s luncheon. The first row of tables (and possibly the second) may need to be reserved for nominees, presenters and recipients.

K E Y N O T E KEYNOTE

JAMIE DAILEY —Grand Ole Opry Star, Jamie Dailey of Dailey & Vincent, will deliver the Keynote Address at this year’s IBMA Business Conference, Tuesday, September 25, at 4pm in the 4th floor Ballroom at the Raleigh Convention Center. Jamie Dailey is an inspired choice for delivering insight on this year’s conference theme, “Branding Bluegrass”.

“I’m honored to be asked to be the keynote speaker at IBMA this year,” says Dailey. “We have an incredible and legit industry, but we face a lot of challenges and uncertainty. However, there are unique and interesting opportunities available to us if we only take the time to search them out and study what could be important growth aspects for most bands. I’m excited to bring my perspective on branding. We need forward and unbounded leadership for our genre to grow, thrive, and most importantly, survive. It’s time to grow and move the music we love to the masses and keep it alive forever.”

Jamie Dailey first came on the international bluegrass music scene in late 1998 when he joined the venerable bluegrass and gospel group, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. In 2007, Jamie joined forces with bluegrass veteran Darrin Vincent to start a band named Dailey and Vincent, which quickly garnered seven IBMA Awards, including the unprecedented feat in their first year of receiving Entertainer, Vocal Group, and Emerging Artist of the Year Awards. Dailey and Vincent kicked off their very first paid tour date on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Ten years later, on March 11, 2017, they were inducted into the Grand Ole Opry as members of the First Family of Country Music.

Having made their marks in bluegrass, country and gospel, Dailey & Vincent have worked tirelessly to expand their reach to new audiences.

“We often underestimate the power of our branding decisions, or lack thereof, on professional success or failure,” notes Paul Schiminger, Executive Director of the IBMA. “Jamie Dailey, along with his musical partner Darrin Vincent, has left nothing to chance. Through a conscious and methodical process, they created a brand that has catapulted their careers. We are excited to have Jamie provide important insights that can help us all rethink how we create our own success.”

When do musical similarities - some inevitable, others deliberate copying - amount to copyright infringement?

The latest answer to this question arrived in March 2018, when the Ninth Circuit affirmed the jury verdict against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke for infringing the copyright in Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” with their song “Blurred Lines.” Professor Jennifer Jenkins reviews this and other cases, examining the line between creativity and theft, and the intriguing legal doctrines evolving from it. Ronald Raxter, moderator ISSUES WITH 3D PRINTING 1PM-2PM, ROOM 307

This presentation, with David Bohm and Lucas Osborn, will analyze the ways three-dimensional (3D) printing technology (AKA additive manufacturing) challenges presumptions in intellectual property law. 3D printing technology democratizes design, distribution, and manufacturing; now even moderately skilled individuals can design, disseminate, and manufacture items. Knowingly or not, such 3D manufacturers interact with intellectual property law as they go about creating, tweaking, and sharing digital designs, risking infringement regardless of whether there is intent, or even knowledge of the intellectual property right involved.

Success in today’s music industry, subject to wave on wave of disruptive innovation, requires us all to stay up-to-date in a changing landscape of music delivery, revenue streams and legal considerations. This is IBMA’s fourth year of offering sessions open to all World of Bluegrass attendees which also qualify as legal education for attorneys. Developed by a panel of volunteer attorneys, these sessions highlight the issues and the pitfalls – some of them surprising - around streaming and copyright.

The music distribution economy is transitioning from ownership to access, from purchasing products and downloads to streaming interactive content. Streaming platforms have dramatically increased, but streaming revenues have not replaced lost income from physical products. The music licensing system has become even more complex. Songwriters and publishers have sued or settled with some interactive streaming services. Questions have arisen about the role of PRO’s and “fractional” vs. “full-work” licensing. This session will address this new world of music licensing. Tuneen Chisolm, Coe Ramsey and Amanda Whorton will discuss this changing landscape and answer questions. Moderator: Ronald Raxter.

With two full-length albums, an EP of traditional music, a live album, and a Christmas record in 2017, several cross-country tours, and appearances at some of the top bluegrass festivals in the United States already under their belt, the possibilities for this act are endless. The group has enjoyed almost non-stop touring including a trip to Burkina Faso, Africa where they were guests of the American Embassy, and in September of 2014, they received a Momentum Award, naming them "Band of the Year" by the International Bluegrass Music Association.

This record debuts original material, and there are two new musical voices in the mix: Aaron Olwell on clarinet and Evan Kinney on accordion. Celebrated folksinger, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Ashleigh Caudill, exemplifies one of the most exciting musical trends to be heard today. Her songs are constructed with an architect's touch and her performances hum with an excitement in the crisp arrangements that lift each song. Caudill placed in the finals of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest two years in a row and some top bands have already found her material. One of those tunes, Row By Row, was recorded on Balsam Range's IBMA Album of the Year, Papertown, and topped the 2013 Bluegrass Gospel Charts, in addition to being nominated for IBMA's Gospel Recorded Event Of The Year. Cedar Hill was founded

by Frank Ray. From their Ozark roots comes an original, bluesy, emotional brand of bluegrass music that has won Cedar Hill numerous awards over the years. Their mark has been made, firmly establishing themselves on the national and international stage. The current lineup with Frank, Jim Bunch, Pete Brown, Patti LaFleur, and Dan Stokely is perhaps the most cohesive group Cedar Hill has ever brought together, allowing their music to flow with an ease and a joy that is clearly evident.

Baltimore-based roots group Charm City Junction puts a new spin on old-timey music, carrying the torch of fast-picking bluegrass and toe-tapping Celtic music. Featuring fiddle, clawhammer banjo, the button accordion and upright bass, this quartet isn’t afraid to take roots music to new places — but always with an eye on tradition. From dance-inducing old-time rhythms and footstomping Irish melodies to hard-driving bluegrass, Baltimore-based Charm City Junction creates a fresh soundscape that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats wondering where they'll go next. The band is comprised of four of the most talented and promising young acoustic roots musicians in the country: Patrick McAvinue - fiddle, Brad Kolodner - clawhammer banjo, Sean McComiskey - button accordion, and Alex Lacquement - upright bass. Drawing from separate musical backgrounds, the four members have found a common ground on which to develop their unique approach.

Based out of East Tennessee, Circus No.9 is a new progressive acoustic group that embraces the influence of bluegrass, jazz, rock, and more. Colebrook Road originated in 2009 out of the common love two high school friends, Jesse Eisenbise and Wade Yankey, share for bluegrass and performing. The band settled on its current lineup in late 2014. The members of Colebrook Road come from diverse musical backgrounds and bond around the power of bluegrass music. Members include: Jesse Eisenbise -guitar, vocals, songwriting, Wade Yankey - mandolin, arrangements, Joe McAnulty - fiddle, vocals, Jeff Campbell - bass, vocals, and Mark Rast - banjo, vocals. Based out of the great state of Florida, Amanda formed this bluegrass band in late 2013 after many years of playing in a band with her father. Amanda was determined to create her own sound. She stepped out on her own and released her first solo album One Stop Along the Road in 2014. In early 2017, Amanda signed with Mountain Fever Records and recorded her debut album, Deep Water, on the label. Since its release on November 3, 2017, Deep Water has charted at the top 10 of prominent bluegrass charts. Amanda’s delivery of a soul-wrenching song, her light-hearted, down-to-earth style and the tremendous musicianship backing her creates an undeniably strong connection with the audience.

Haas Kowert Tice (Brittany Haas, Paul Kowert, and Jordan Tice) brought on mandolinist Dominick Leslie to form Hawktail. Music fans will recognize them from their various other outfits (Punch Brothers, David Rawlings, Crooked Still, Deadly Gentlemen, Live from Here) and enjoy this unique instrumental offering. The band is based in Nashville. Their first album as a quartet, Unless, was released on May 11th, featuring all original music.

Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish, The Honey Dewdrops, are celebrating their 9th year of touring full time, having played stages and festivals far and wide in North America and Europe. With tight harmonies and a musical ensemble that includes clawhammer banjo, mandolin and guitars, the effect is to leave listeners with only what matters: the heart of the song and clarity over ornamentation.

After leaving their home base of Virginia and living on the road for 2 years, Laura and Kagey now call Baltimore, Maryland home and it's where they wrote and recorded their fourth full-length album, Tangled Country, released May 2015. Acoustic Guitar Magazine describes the set of songs as “a handcrafted sound centered on swarming harmonies and acoustic guitars that churn like a paddlewheel and shimmer like heat waves on the highway.” Stay tuned to The Honey Dewdrops.

Rebekah Long is no stranger to the stage, having played upright bass with the Little Roy & Lizzy show and Valerie Smith.

Based in Nashville, TN, she now brings all of that experience joined with her own gift of musical talent to the stage in an energydriven show of bluegrass with a heartfelt mountain sound. She reveals her many dimensions as an artist by including standards like "I Washed My Face In The Morning Dew" to her charming version of the Elton John hit "Honky Cat” and her exciting cover of Loudon Wainwright's "The Swimming Song". Rebekah released her second solo album, Run Away, produced by Donna Ulisse in Sept. of 2017 on LUK Records. Band members are: Rebekah Long - guitar & lead vocals, Derek Vaden banjo and vacals, Kimberly Bibb - fiddle and vocals, JaeLee Roberts - mandolin and vocals, and Lee Chapman - bass and vocals.

Formed in 2014, Man About a Horse brandishes strong ties to the bluegrass music tradition, with a progressive streak that informs their original songwriting. The band is known for vocal harmonies; up-tempo, high-energy sets; and rock-solid, authentic songwriting. Man About a Horse has performed at festivals and in venues around the U.S., and shared bills with Ricky Skaggs, The Travelin’ McCourys, Danny Barnes, Cabinet, Jeff Austin Band, and others. The band has released two studio recordings: The EP (2015) and a self-titled fulllength LP Man About a Horse (2017), which debuted at #11 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart and earned praise from Bluegrass Unlimited, British Bluegrass News, and others.

In 2018, the band notched their first Bluegrass Today radio chart. Their album has shown crossover appeal as a WXPN pick for Best of 2017.

The band is Matt Thomas - bass, Matt “Roy” Royles guitar, Dan Whitener - banjo, and Matthew Hiller - mandolin, and is represented by the Agency for the Performing Arts (APA) for live appearances.

JigJam is a multi-award winning quartet from the heart of the midlands in Ireland. Blending the best of traditional Irish music with bluegrass and Americana in a new genre which has been branded by Bluegrass Today as 'I-Grass' (IrishGrass), their onstage energy along with their virtuosic musical ability has captivated audiences throughout the world.

Jamie McKeogh, Cathal Guinan and Daithi Melia all hail from Tullamore, County Offaly with County Tipperary-born Gavin Strappe completing the quartet. All four members grew up immersed in Irish traditional music and culture which is reflected by the band collectively achieving over twenty All-Ireland titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann competitions. They have now developed their own unique style of music influenced by American folk music whilst staying true to their Irish roots. Described as "The best Irish group so far in bluegrass" by Irish American News, this sharply dressed outfit deliver an energyfuelled, foot-stomping live performance. JigJam have received notable acclaim for their own original songs.

Based in Toronto, Canada, the Lonesome Ace Stringband has been cultivating and performing a large repertoire of tunes and songs that draw from the huge well of traditional American and Canadian music, as well as creating original material that reflects their powerful dynamics and common vision as a group since 2008. With two albums of their favorite traditional material under their belts, the trio has just launched a third record in January 2018. This is their first record of original material and marks a strong new direction for the band’s creative process. This is an old-time stringband with bluegrass chops that plays really good music. This seasoned trio connects to the heart and ear through their haunting melodies, buzzing vocal harmonies and driving rhythm with John Showman on fiddle, Chris Coole on banjo and Max Heineman on bass. The Plate Scrapers originated in 2014 in western Maryland the way any good bluegrass band does: from a bunch of fellers pickin’ around in a circle, surrounded by delicious plates of food, strong libations, and good friends. The traditional spirit of The Plate Scrapers is still innately intact nearly half a decade later, though they have evolved into far more than your average bluegrass band. Through diverse backgrounds and influences ranging from jazz, to hard rock, to funk, the band has taken their music to an eclectic new level. The Plate Scrapers’ songwriting is the identifying characteristic of the band. Complementing writing styles from multiple members offer a tasteful balance and refreshing diversity to their sound, a diversity which they thoroughly exercise.

Folksy lyrics of songs like “Shoes” or “Moonlight” call to a time of friendship, nostalgia, and adventure, while songs like “Trucker’s Aspirin” or “Easy Way Out” are darker tales, gritty in nature.

Missy Raines is a true icon in bluegrass music, and this 7-time IBMA Bass Player of the Year returns to her roots with this acoustic trio featuring George Jackson on fiddle and banjo, and Ben Garnett on guitar. Their close harmonies and interweaving musical interaction make for a dynamic performance. On her new album, Royal Traveller, produced by Alison Brown, Raines comes into her own as a vocalist and songwriter on a collection of songs that reflect the breadth of her musical vision. The album’s first single, “Swept Away", written by Laurie Lewis, features the First Ladies of Bluegrass: Missy, Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Becky Buller and Alison Brown, all of whom, like Missy, were the first women in the history of the IBMA to win Instrumentalist of the Year awards on their respective instruments. "Swept Away" received 2 IBMA nominations this year including "Song of the Year" and "Recorded Event of the Year".

In 2017 this twice Juno-nominated band from the West Coast released their seventh recording, On That Other Green Shore, which Bluegrass Unlimited calls “another classic album from John Reischman and the Jaybirds”, showcasing what Folk Radio UK calls “musicianship of the very highest order”. A GRAMMY winner known for his original instrumentals, BU called John "one of the world's undisputed masters" of the mandolin. Patrick Sauber, a soaring harmony singer and firecracker guitarist, is a highly sought-after West Coast player. Sing Out! calls Trisha Gagnon "one of the most versatile" and "irresistible" lead vocalists in bluegrass. Nick Hornbuckle has developed his own voice on the five-string banjo - his playing “can be downright spine-tingling," says the L.A. Daily News. Greg Spatz is hailed as a "world-class bluegrass fiddler" by Fiddler Magazine.

Born into a musical family and singing from the age of five in church and in her father’s band, Robins was influenced largely by the music of Connie Smith, Loretta Lynn, Buck Owens, Ray Price, Bill Monroe, and Barbara Mandrell. Her mother’s encouragement that she practice daily and sing loud paid off as she traveled all over the country, opening for legends such as Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Barbara Mandrell and The Oak Ridge Boys. Robins has gained attention with her high-energy, contemporary sound, performing with her band, 40 Years Late, at many venues and festivals including the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA), The Folk Alliance in Memphis, Merlefest, and opening for notable bluegrass artists such as Ralph Stanley, Bobby Osborne and Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice. In 2015 and in 2017, Robins was nominated for an IBMA Momentum Vocalist award.

In 2016, Kim signed with Pinecastle Records for the release of her sophomore CD, Raining in Baltimore.

Bluegrass in the West is known for incorporating progressive influences, but few bands have perfected a blend of deep tradition and trailblazing like Jeff Scroggins & Colorado. The band brings together brilliant musicianship with powerhouse Appalachian vocals, solid and energetic rhythm, and an easy stage banter that has delighted listeners all over the world. Frontman and internationally acclaimed two-time National Banjo Champion Jeff Scroggins is joined by his son, the preternaturally gifted young mandolinist and 2017 IBMA Award winner Tristan Scroggins. The band’s vocalist Greg Blake grew up in West Virginia, and when he sings, you can hear a voice that connects to the great old generations of mountain singers, invested with a rich twang and the kind of eerily powerful cry that first inspired the “high, lonesome sound”. Fiddler Ellie Hakanson was a 2017 IBMA Momentum Award nominee, and legendary bassist and two-time IBMA Bass Player of the Year Mark Schatz rounds out this powerful and exciting cast.

The band has released 18 recordings and has appeared on numerous radio and cable television shows, including The Nashville Network and the Grand Ole Opry. The band's lead singer, Kristi Ison Stanley, is originally from Pikeville, KY. At 15, Kristi performed on the live radio show, Home Spun Country. The DJ, Tim Michaels, a musician as well, was quite impressed with her talent. Tim and Kristi formed the band Sandy River, opening for national acts like Kenny Chesney, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Ricochet. Kristi met her husband, Ralph Stanley II, while on vacation with her family in Nashville, sitting in at a taping of Prime Time Country.

Two years later, the couple were married and raised two beautiful children. Staying home full time with her family has been a blessing.

Now, Kristi has taken the all acoustic Grassicana route with her new band, Running Blind, including Randy Blevins, Tommy Austin, Vickie Austin, Ashley Davis, Travis Houck & Chad Love.

The Texas songwriter tradition casts a long shadow today. But Wood & Wire doesn’t romanticize Texas’ culture or its past; they’re too busy making new music and writing new songs. Respect for honest labor is a central theme in their new album, North of Despair (out April 13, 2018 on Blue Corn Music), with songs populated by people like songwriter Tony Kamel’s own grandfather. Vivid, haunting songwriting focused on lives spent deep in the countryside is a hallmark of Texas songwriting; but it’s the melding of this hard country songwriting with high-octane bluegrass instrumentation that makes for Wood & Wire’s signature sound. On North of Despair, Tony Kamel, Trevor Smith, Dominic Fisher, & Billy Bright cut these tunes live to tape with minimal editing (a result of touring hard since 2014) bringing the ferocity of their live shows, and an impromptu joy to each track. This is really their first studio record since they began touring nationally, making it their most definitive to date.

With threads of singersongwriter, rock, and jamband music woven throughout, The Wooks were born over 20 years’ time somewhere between an Irish pub, a barbecue joint, and a festival jam circle. Their inspiration: Crowe, Whitley, Simpson, Bush, Stapleton, and Rice, who all cut their teeth on stages throughout the Bluegrass region. The Wooks translate the sights and sounds of the people, hills, bars, roads, and creeks around them into songs and shows that captivate. Since their 2014 start, they’ve been making noise in central Kentucky and beyond. Winning the 2016 RockyGrass Band Competition, they were finalists for the 2017 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, and were 2017 IBMA Momentum Award nominees. Their first record, Little Circles, produced by Alison Brown at Compass Studios, debuted at #6 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart. Aaron Bibelhauser is a singer, songwriter, and picker from Louisville, KY. He has penned songs recorded by award-winning bluegrass artists Balsam Range, and Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper. In 2016, he took first place in the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest, and in 2017 earned a nomination for the prestigious IBMA Song Of The Year Award. Known for his work with Louisville-based bluegrass outfit, Relic, and for his solo efforts, Bibelhauser’s latest solo release, Southwind, features legendary fiddler Michael Cleveland and Balsam Range’s Buddy Melton.

Julie Brakenbury is Director of Services for Greater Raleigh CVB. She has been involved in IBMA’s World of Bluegrass since it first came to Raleigh. Having chaired the Community Activation Subcommittee for the Local Organizing Committee, Julie now co-chairs it with Gray Henderson. Her professional passion is hosting great events. While she’s not supposed to have a favorite event, let’s keep it our secret that IBMA has become her favorite one to host.

Professor Tuneen Chisolm teaches Trademark & Unfair Competition, Entertainment Law, and Intellectual Property at Campbell Law School.

Her research interests include the intersection of morality, equity and intellectual property rights, particularly as it relates to entertainment and sports. Prior to Campbell Law, she served as the Westerfield Fellow on the faculty at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. She practiced for more than 10 years as an entertainment and intellectual property litigator in Los Angeles.

SHERRILL BLACKMAN

DAVID BOHM David Bohm is Campbell Law School’s director of development. Prior to Campbell Law, Bohm served as the assistant executive director of the North Carolina Bar Association since 2008. Licensed to practice law in both North Carolina and Kansas, Mr. Bohm has been active in the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE) and various nonprofit boards. From NABE, he has received the President’s Award in 2011 and the Peer Excellence Award in 2014.

Marcia Campbell has been square dancing on the Grand Ole Opry since she was 13. Her dancing talents have taken her around the world, but you can see her perform every Saturday night on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. The best way to hear her bright, positive, magnetic personality is when the microphone opens each and every Monday through Friday between midnight and 5:30 a.m when she hosts WSM-650 AM’s ‘The WSM All Nighter’ show.

KYLE CANTRELL Kyle Cantrell grew up listening to the sounds of the Grand Ole Opry. In 1982 he joined the staff of WSM, where he pioneered its first classic country format and won the 2003 Golden Voice Award for Outstanding Radio Personality. He was named IBMA Bluegrass Broadcaster of the Year in 2008.

STACY CHANDLER Stacy Chandler is the assistant editor at roots music journal and website, No Depression, where she coordinates album reviews, writes and edits articles, and more. She began her career as a copy editor for daily newspapers and now writes and edits for several local and national publications. Stacy lives in Raleigh, NC, with her husband and daughter, a big yellow dog, and an underused fiddle.

KRISTY COX

Hailing from Australia, Kristy Cox is a multi-award winning and chart topping bluegrass artist signed to Mountain Fever Records. Completing her law degree in 2015, she works in immigration law in Nasvhille, TN, when she is not on the road touring with her band.

SEMINAR BIOS

Dudley, North Carolina native, Sherrill Blackman, arrived in Nashville in 1980. His early work at The Nashville Songwriters Association International and Buckhorn Music led Blackman to found sdb music group, a publishing and song-plugging company in 1994. He has secured recordings in country, pop, rock, gospel, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and polka, resulting in radio hits, gold, platinum, and multiplatinum certifications, GRAMMY and IBMA nominations, and one Dove award.

MARCIA CAMPBELL

JEREMY DARROW Combining elements of folk, bluegrass, jazz and classical music to create detailed, dynamic basslines and infectious grooves, Nashville-based musician Jeremy Darrow is one of the most versatile double-bassists in acoustic music. In addition to his genre-defying work in the band Front Country, Jeremy has performed and recorded with a diverse list of top artists including Roland White, Josh Joplin, Jim Lauderdale, and many more. He maintains a busy international touring schedule.

SEMINAR PRESENTER/MODERATOR BIOS MOLLIE FARR Mollie Farr, from Nashville, TN, is owner and operator of Lost Buffalo Artists, an independent booking agency and management company.

Representing all bluegrass and roots musicians, Mollie also supports the community as host of the Petway Sounds House Concert Series in Nashville, and was selected as a member of the 2018 IBMA Leadership Bluegrass class.

AMANDA FIELDS

ANNA FRICK Anna Frick is a mastering engineer at Airshow Mastering in Boulder. Her work encompasses studio albums, live recordings, and reissues across old and new formats and a variety of genres, from bluegrass to folk and rock. With a degree in Music Industry Studies from CU-Denver, she is a IBMA Leadership Bluegrass graduate, a member of AES and NARAS, and SoundGirls.org-Colorado chapter head.

TIM FRYE In addition to being music director for WPAQ, Tim Frye also hosts Mountain Morning and The Midday Show. Based in Mt. Airy, NC, he has been nominated for Bluegrass DJ of the Year several times by SPBGMA and was also named Broadcaster of

MICHELE GOURLEY In addition to playing percussion and mountain dulcimer, Michele Gourley, MD, MPH, MTS, is an alumna of Duke University and holds degrees in medicine, public health and theology.

She is a certified practitioner of the Empowerment Dynamic through the Bainbridge Leadership Institute and a certified wellness coach. Michele has been sought after as a presenter at state and national conferences such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, Southern Society of Medical Research, and the Southern Obesity Summit.

AARON GREENWOOD Aaron Greenwood is a Chapel Hill, North Carolina based arts administrator and musician. In his role at Music Maker Relief Foundation, Aaron has helped launch the careers of music legends Ironing Board Sam, Robert Finley, The Como Mamas as well as others.

TATIANA HARGREAVES Since releasing her first solo album Started Out To Ramble in 2009, Tatiana Hargreaves has toured with musicians such as Dave Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Laurie Lewis, Darol Anger, and Bruce Molsky. KELSI HARRIGILL Kelsi Harrigill is a vocalist and mandolinist with award-winning Flatt Lonesome. Now living on Colorado’s Front Range, Chandler can be found performing one of his many original songs as a solo artist. His debut solo record will be released in early 2019.

Professor Jennifer Jenkins is Director of Duke’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain and a Senior Lecturing Fellow at Duke Law School, where she teaches courses in Intellectual Property and Music Copyright. She leads the Center’s “Arts Project,” which analyzes the effects of intellectual property on cultural production. Jenkins is author of numerous works, including the casebook "Intellectual Property: Law and the Information Society" (2014) (with James Boyle).

Steve Martin, a banjo-playing attorney, hosts Steve Martin’s Unreal Bluegrass (unrealbluegrass.com), now heard on five radio stations. Mike Mitchell is a singer/songwriter/fiddler from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Founder and director of the Floyd Music School, Mitchell is releasing his third album of original songs and fiddle tunes, Small Town, this year at WOB. Brett Martin serves as director of JAM, the parent organization for more than 40 after-school traditional music education programs. A traditional old time and bluegrass musician herself, Martin has worked with JAM since 2012 developing and offering resources and training for JAM teachers, organizing performances and learning opportunities for young musicians, and helping communities utilize the tools and support needed to develop and maintain JAM programs.

Veteran singer/songwriter and champion guitarist Andy May has been performing professionally since he was a teen himself. Building on his degree in Fine Arts and Art Education, as well as his desire to mentor young musicians, and lifetime of experience as a musician, Andy created Acoustic Kids Showcases in 1990. These festival-based, non-competitive performance opportunities for young musicians have become a much-loved tradition at festivals such as the Walnut Valley Festival (since 1991) and MerleFest (since 2001).

MILAN MILLER As a songwriter, Milan Miller’s songs have been recorded by some of the most popular names in bluegrass, including Balsam Range, IIIrd Tyme Out, Terry Baucom, Sam Bush, and the Steep Canyon Rangers. Along the way, he has had thirteen number one songs in the genre, a steady stream of others that have graced the top twenty, and two nominations each for Song of the Year and Songwriter of the Year by the IBMA.

ROB MONATH Rob Monath’s practice focuses on the protection and development of intellectual property. He handles legal and business matters involving copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets and related areas for a wide range of clients in music, publishing, arts, entertainment, business, education, and non-profit organizations. He has served on the Board of Managers for the Carolina Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law Association and on the Council for the Intellectual Property Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.

Stephen Mougin is the owner/operator of Dark Shadow Recording, where he produces and engineers demos, EPs, and albums for independents and for the DSR Label. Mougin is a certified educator teaching music K-College, and he focuses on his “Stephen Mougin Band Coaching” business as well as camps and workshops throughout the country. He has had songwriting cuts with The Infamous Stringdusters, Melonie Cannon, Chris Jones and the Night Drivers, and more.

Scott Napier has been involved in bluegrass music for 22 years, during which time he has participated in both national and international tours. Scott has released original music on both CD and instructional DVD. While he continues to perform as mandolinist for The Lost and Found Band, he is also an assistant professor at HCTC’s Kentucky School of Bluegrass and Traditional Music, and is creator of the Bobby Osborne Mandolin Roundup camp in Hyden, KY.

John and Julie Pennell decided to combine their musical talents in the early days of 2010, and began performing together as a musical duo. Both have considerable songwriting accomplishments, as well as a significant of time as performing musicians (Alison Krauss, Vassar Clements, Harley Allen, Charlie Sizemore). With an emphasis on new original material, their combined talents reflect the work of two people devoted to the writing and performance of roots-based music bluegrass, country, blues and folk.

Ashley Moyer graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2011.

She has been with Rounder Records since the fall of 2015 and has worked on album release campaigns for Sam Bush, The Earls of Leicester, Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, The Gibson Brothers, Sierra Hull, and Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, and many others. Her additional responsibilities have grown to include bluegrass radio, digital marketing, and event planning.

Award-winning songwriter Joe Newberry grew up in a musical family in Missouri. A longtime guest on A Prairie Home Companion, he sang with the 2016 Transatlantic Sessions, and at the Transatlantic Session’s debut at Merlefest in 2017. The Gibson Brothers’ version of his song “Singing As We Rise” won the 2012 IBMA Gospel Recorded Performance Award, and with Eric Gibson, he shared the 2013 IBMA Song of the Year Award for “They Called It Music.”

Daniel Mullins is a third-generation broadcaster. As host of Bending the Strings, a weekly program on Ohio’s Classic Country Radio Network, he both follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and expands the horizon of their more traditional focuses.

EVAN MURPHY

Evan Murphy was raised in Boston, MA. He studied music at Boston College. After graduating in 2012 he lived in New York City for a short period where he dove deep into bluegrass guitar and vocals under the guidance of Michael Daves. He moved back to Boston in late 2014 and cofounded the band Mile Twelve. Evan is featured in the 2018 IBMA Songwriter Showcase, and is nominated for a Momentum Award as a vocalist.

Professor Lucas Osborn is an expert in the area of Intellectual Property Law, with a focus on Patent Law. He has authored over a dozen articles on intellectual property law, presented his research on three continents, and been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News and locally.

He serves as the founder and director of Campbell Law School’s Intellectual Property Law Program. His private practice focused on patent litigation, patent prosecution and intellectual property licensing.

COE RAMSEY Coe Ramsey is a partner at Brooks Pierce. He has a diverse entertainment practice that includes matters related to music, radio, film, television, and publishing. Ron Raxter retired after practicing law for almost 40 years. He was a founder of two non-profit arts organizations, the Apple Chill Cloggers and PineCone - the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music. He currently serves on the Board of PineCone, the Education Committee of IBMA, and Raleigh’s Local Organizing Committee for the WOB, and he chairs the Planning Committee for IBMA’s Leadership Bluegrass. He is a 2015 graduate of Leadership Bluegrass. He plays bass in several bands.

Daniel Routh is a musician/road manager and co-owner of Nu-Blu, owner and head engineer at Red Squared Audio, co-host of television’s Bluegrass Ridge, and producer/radio personality of Bluegrass Ridge Radio. He also executes branding and marketing for the partnerships that Nu-Blu and Red Squared Audio have created, and teams with giants in the industry like Peterson Tuners, QSC, Nuemann/Sennheiser, Kirlin Cables, Izotope, and Westone.

Jack Shannon is a songwriter from Indiana and is best known as the writer of “Same Old Moon” by Jim Hurst. Jack is currently promoting his current project, The Bloomingdale Boys. KIM ROBINS Born into a musical family, Kim Robins was influenced largely by the music of country and bluegrass greats. Kim spent her childhood years traveling the country and opening for legends such as Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Barbara Mandrell, and many more. In 2017 and 2015, Robins was nominated for an IBMA Momentum Vocalist award, and in 2016 signed with Pinecastle Records for the release of her sophomore CD, Raining in Baltimore.

Referred to by Billboard Magazine as “One of Music Row’s greatest veteran tunesmiths,” Jerry Salley has had over 450 songs recorded in his multi-award winning career. Jerry is a three-time IBMA Award winner.

JIM WOOLSEY Jim Woolsey has been writing nearly his entire life. He has had several bluegrass cuts with notable artists such as The Chapmans and Northern Lights. TOMASZ ŻERNICKI Tomasz Żernicki, co-founder, and CTO of Zylia (www.zylia.co), an innovative company which provides tools for 3D audio recording and music production. Tomasz holds Ph.D. degrees in electrical and electronic engineering. His professional interests concentrate on: 360/VR music production, spatial sound processing, and recording. Come hear the perspectives of educators, performers, and community leaders on the front lines, introducing youth musicians to bluegrass. “First exposures” for youths and families unfamiliar with bluegrass, considerations for community youth jams, approaches to organizing a youth bluegrass band, bluegrass programs for schools/museums/ libraries, ideas for introducing students to the broader bluegrass community, and considerations for developing young players at the high school and college levels are among topics covered.
