CONTENTS

Message from the Editor: In a world riven by conflict and characterised by ever more unsettling change, religion can be both a curse and a blessing. It can be a curse in the sense that belief and its consequences can serve as the catalyst or motor for violence. Or, more benignly, it can be a blessing when it helps to bring people of differing faiths closer together in its quest for amity and harmony. Either way, and whatever form it takes, we need to understand religion better in order better to understand ourselves, our motivations and our politics – both individually and as members of nationstates. Whatever their background, and whether or not they hold any personal faith, the authors in our catalogue are united in the belief that an informed study of the divine can make a real difference to human affairs.

This new list, even as it ranges between traditions and across several sub-fields, offers many highlights which exemplify that desire to make a difference. Philip Almond’s new biography of God (p.4) sets the Almighty firmly within the context of the history of ideas. In Believing in Film (p.5), Mark Le Fanu offers a thoroughly engaging study of film and religion. Religious history is well served by several Short Histories, including new volumes on the Reformation and Christian Spirituality (both p.7); by a major new study of Blake’s artistic vision by talented newcomer Naomi Billingsley (p.30); by the latest volume in the I.B.Tauris History of Monasticism from scholar-priest John Binns (p.5); and by a weighty new treatment of medieval theology and history by a doyenne of the field, Willemien Otten (p.8). Scott Midson, meanwhile, has his sights firmly set in his Cyborg Theology (p.4) on making sense of God in the context of modernity. Attempting when we can to make our scholarship affordable and available, we have new paperbacks in the offing of, respectively, Dreams and Visions in the World of Islam (p.15), Jesus and the Rise of Nationalism (p.4) and Sufis, Salafis and Islamists (p.16).

ISLAM

BUDDHISM

An Introduction Catharina Raudvere

An Introduction Alexander Wynne Dhammachai Tipitaka Project, Thailand

University of Copenhagen

In this comprehensive textbook, Wynne shows that the story of Buddhism as a global system of belief begins with the life of the Buddha in northern India in the fifth century. He discusses the many new advances that have been made with regard to its origins, and traces the ways that formative Indian doctrines helped shape the features of later Asian Buddhism.

Assessing Islam as a truly global phenomenon, Raudvere engages thoroughly with history (explaining the significance of the revelation of the Prophet Muhammad and the origins of the different Sunni and Shi’a communities within Islam), while also giving full and comprehensive coverage to Muslim ritual life and Islamic ethics.

GOD NEW

Humans, Technology and God

NEW

A New Biography Philip C. Almond University of Queensland

Scott A. Midson University of Manchester

The concept of the cyborg, or cybernetic organism, has led to notably creative explorations of the ambiguous relationship between human beings and technology. In particular, Donna Haraway argued in her famous 1991 ‘Cyborg Manifesto’ that people, since they are so often now detached and separated from nature, have themselves evolved into cyborgs. This striking idea has had considerable influence within critical theory, cultural studies and even science fiction (where it has surfaced, for example, in the Terminator films and in the Borg of the Star Trek franchise). But it is a notion that has had much less currency in theology. In his innovative new book, Scott Midson boldly argues that the deeper nuances of Haraway’s and the cyborg idea can similarly rejuvenate theology, mythology and anthropology. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2017 9781784537876 HARDBACK £59.00 / $95.00 e ebook available

RADICAL PROPHET

NEW

The Mystics, Subversives and Visionaries who Strove for Heaven on Earth Christopher Rowland University of Oxford

Christianity began with the conviction that the old order was finished. The mysterious, elusive and charismatic figure of Jesus proclaimed that a new era, the Kingdom of God, was dawning. Yet despite its success, and the conversion of the empire which had executed its founder, the religion he inspired was soon domesticated, its counter-cultural radicalism tamed, as the Church attempted to control both its doctrines and its followers. Christopher Rowland here shows that this was never the whole story. At the margins, around the edges, sometimes off the religious map, the apocalyptic flame of the New Testament continued to burn. This book argues that such revolutionaries had divined the true intent of the enigma who threw over the tables of the money-changers: to summon a new epoch. It gives full weight to a remarkable strain of radical religion that simply refuses to die. 256 PAGES 216X135MM AUGUST 2017 9781784532659 HARDBACK £25/$39 e ebook available

After the king was slain by marauding Vikings in the ninth century, the legend which grew up around his murder led to the foundation in Bury of one of the pre-eminent shrines of Christendom. 256 PAGES 216 X 135 MM MARCH 2018 9781788311793 HARDBACK £20.00 / $35.00 e ebook available

CHRISTIAN STUDIES & THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY

I.B.TAURIS HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH General Editor: G.R. Evans, University of Cambridge

‘The new I.B.Tauris History of the Christian Church has quickly established an enviable reputation for impressive scholarship’ – Journal of Ecclesiastical History THE CHURCH IN THE EARLY MODERN AGE C. Scott Dixon, Queen’s University, Belfast

The years 1450-1650 were a momentous period for the development of Christianity. C. Scott Dixon explores how the ideas that went into the making of early modern Christianity re-oriented the Church to such an extent that they gave rise to new versions of the religion. He shows how the varieties and ambivalences of late medieval theology were now replaced by dogmatic certainties, where the institutions of Christian churches became more effective and ‘modern’, staffed by well-trained clergy. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM MARCH 2016 9781845114398 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 4

How did the early Christians manage to establish a religion and institution which, despite persecution, flourished and grew? How did their initial experience of being a despised minority in the Roman Empire shape their sense of privileged identity and uniqueness? And how was it that – at least at the outset – the first believers were able to exist alongside the same shared traditions, rituals and beliefs of the Jews, despite the Jewish rejection of Jesus as Messiah? Morwenna Ludlow discusses the fragile context as well as the emerging core beliefs of the early Church between 50 and 600 CE.

THE CHURCH IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES G.R. Evans University of Cambridge

256 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2007 9781845111502 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 2

The creation of a new history of the Church at the beginning of the third millennium is an ambitious but necessary project. Perhaps nowhere is it needed more than in re-describing the Church’s development – its life and its thinking – in the period that followed the end of the ‘early Church’ in antiquity. The cultural, social and political dominance of Christendom in what we now call ‘the West’, from about 600-1300, made the Christian Church a shaper of the modern world in respects which go far beyond its religious influence. Writing with her customary authority, and with a magisterial grasp of the original sources, G R Evans brings this formative era vividly to life.

Norman Tanner Gregorian University, Rome

Writing with characteristic mastery of the sources, Norman Tanner challenges this negative view, examining a vibrant period of ecclesiastical history in its own right rather than just through the lenses of the centuries that preceded and succeeded it. He discusses the trials of the age in the form of the papal schism between 1378-1417, the heresies of Cathars, Lollards and Hussites, the Hundred Years’ War, and the terror of the Black Death. Yet he focuses, too, on the great ecumenical councils, the flowering of intellectual life in the Renaissance and the extraordinarily rich spirituality of mystics like Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Siena and Meister Eckhart.

David Hempton Harvard University 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2011 9781845114404 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 5

David Hempton’s history of the vibrant period between 1650 and 1832 engages with a truly global story: that of Christianity not only in Europe and North America, but also in the wider world. Examining eighteenthcentury religious thought in its sophisticated national and social contexts, the author relates the narrative of the Church to the rise of religious enthusiasm pioneered by Pietists, Methodists, Evangelicals and Revivalists, and by important leaders like August Hermann Francke, Jonathan Edwards and John Wesley. Winner of the Albert C. Outler Prize of the American Society of Church History, 2012

Frances Knight University of Nottingham

Frances Knight addresses the crucial question of how Christianity contributed to individual identity in a context of of widespread urbanization and modernization. She explores important topics such as the Evangelical revival led by the likes of the founder of the Christian Mission – later the Salvation Army – William Booth; the Oxford Movement under Newman, Keble and Pusey; Mormonism and Protestant revivalism in the USA; socialism and the impacts of Karl Marx and anarchism; continuing theological divisions between Protestants and Catholics; and the development of pilgrimage and devotion at places like Lourdes and Knock.

256 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2007 9781845113179 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 7

Given the diversity and complexity of developments in the twentieth century, a history of the Christian Church in the modern period is in some ways the most challenging volume of all to write. But Jeremy Morris succeeds in presenting a coherent account of the Church. He emphasizes the changing relationship of Western churches to the many forms of Christianity in other parts of the world, while also departing from the Eurocentric worldview of previous histories.

CHRISTIAN STUDIES & THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY

I.B.TAURIS SHORT HISTORIES A SHORT HISTORY OF

CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY

NEW

Edward Howells

Heathrop College, University of London For some people today it means a search for relationship with ’the divine’ . For others, it signifies an existential journey into the deepest reaches of the self. As Edward Howells reveals, in his engaging new survey of mystical belief, Christian spirituality was once understood to be quite distinct from individual experience, whether inward or outward looking. But more often it now points to something experiential, albeit with Christian trappings, and focused on personal ‘development’. Howells shows that, in Christian history, spirituality was never some rarefied, esoteric activity but something workaday: about putting an idea of God at the centre of all reality. 256 PAGES 216 X 135MM 9/30/2018 9781788312141 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.99 9781788312134 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 e ebook available

MEDIEVAL THEOLOGY

NEW

Medieval theology has frequently been equated with a narrow scholasticism. Willemien Otten suggests, however, that the theological thinking of the Middle Ages was far richer, more diverse and more complex than is often assumed. This bold new treatment, by a paramount authority in the history of ideas, characterizes thinking and writing about God as a thoroughly composite activity in which faith and reason, symbol and sacrament and liturgy and exposition were flexibly combined.

THE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF ETHIOPIA A History John Binns University of Cambridge

The Church of Ethiopia is the only pre-colonial church in sub-Saharan Africa; today it has a membership of around forty million and is rapidly growing. This book is the first major study of a community which has developed a distinctive approach different from all other churches. John Binns explains how its special features have shaped the life of the Ethiopian people, and how political changes since the overthrow of Haile Selassie have forced the Church to rethink its identity and mission. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536954 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

THE LABOUR CHURCH University of Reading

This book provides an analysis of the Labour Church, its religious doctrine, its socio-political function and its role in the cultural development of the early socialist arm of the labour movement. It includes a detailed examination of the Victorian morality and spirituality upon which the life of the Labour Church was built. Jacqui Turner challenges previously held assumptions that the Labour Church was irreligious and merely a political tool.

The Diyanet, the official face of Islam in Turkey, is the ‘Presidency of Religious Affairs’, a governmental department established in 1924 after the break-up of the Ottoman Empire and the abolition of Caliphate. In this book, Emir Kaya offers an in-depth multidisciplinary analysis of this vital institution. Focusing on the role of the Diyanet in society, Kaya explores the balance the institution has to strike between the Muslim traditions of the Turkish population and the secular creed of the Turkish state. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781780766225 HARDBACK £62.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN TURKEY e ebook available

RELIGIOUS MINORITIES OF THE MIDDLE EAST NEW

A Complete Survey of NonMuslim Communities Erica C.D. Hunter SOAS, London

Veena R. Howard

Dharma is central to all the indigenous religious traditions of India, which cannot adequately be understood apart from it. Often translated as ‘ethics’, ‘religion’ or ‘religious law’, dharma possesses elements of each of these but is not confined to any single category. Neither is it the equivalent of what many in the West might usually consider to be ‘a philosophy’. This much-needed analysis of the history and heritage of dharma shows that it is instead a multi-faceted religious force, or paradigm, that has defined and that continues to shape South Asian civilization in a whole multitude of forms. Experts in the fields of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh studies here bring fresh insights to dharma in terms both of its distinctiveness and its commonality as these are expressed across, and between, the local religions of India. 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2018 9781784532642 PAPERBACK £17.99 / $30.00 9781784532635 HARDBACK £59.00 / $95.00 e ebook available

Interaction and Exchange Among Muslim and Christian Communities A. Asa Eger University of North Carolina For centuries, Byzantine and Islamic scholars have evocatively sketched a contested border: the annual raids between the two, the line of fortified fortresses defending Islamic lands, the no-man’s land in between and the birth of jihad. In their early representations of a Muslim-Christian encounter, accounts of the Islamic-Byzantine frontier are charged with significance for a future ‘clash of civilizations’ that often envisions a polarised world. 432 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784539191 PAPERBACK £19.99 / $29.50 e ebook available

Diversity of Traditions

The Fatimids ruled much of the Mediterranean world for over two centuries. From the conquest of Qayrawan in 909 to defeat at the hands of Saladin in 1171, the Fatimid caliphate governed a vast area stretching, at its peak, from the Red Sea in the East to the Atlantic Ocean in the West. Their leaders - the Ismaili Shi‘i Imam-caliphs - were distinctive in largely pursuing a policy of tolerance towards the religious and ethnic communities of their realm, and they embraced diverse approaches to the practicalities of administering a vast empire. The present volume, edited by Farhad Daftary and Shainool Jiwa, brings together a series of original contributions from a number of leading authorities in the field. Based on analyses of primary sources, the chapters shed fresh light on the impact of Fatimid rule. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788311335 HARDBACK £27.50 / $39.95 I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES e ebook available

Revisionist Religion, Agnosticism and Disbelief in the Modern Arab World Ralph M. Coury (Ed)

Arab debates about the critical relationship between religion and modernity began in the early nineteenth century. Such debates are now integral to the struggle for power between a variety of political groups, and are vital to understanding the modern Middle East. This unique volume introduces the writings of the Muslim and Arab Christian revisionist ‘free-thinkers’ who have tried to redefine the relationship. 320 PAGES 234 X 156MM JANUARY 2018 9781784533373 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES e ebook available

MUSLIM IDENTITY POLITICS NEW

Islam, Activism and Equality in Britain Khadijah Elshayyal University of Edinburgh

In this path-breaking study, Sadek Hamid explores the impact of three globally influential religious paradigms on the faith identity formation of British Muslims. The author traces the unwritten story of the evolution of Sufi, Salafi and Islamist activism in Britain, focusing on the legacies of the Young Muslims UK, Hizb ut-Tahrir, Salafi-oriented trends and the neo-Sufi \lquote Traditional Islam\rquote network. Hamid explains how they participate in collective faith-based activism, develop solidarities with transnational political struggles and differentiate claims over religious authenticity, scholarly authority and group priorities. He also illustrates how these movements gained and lost support, related to foreign ideologies and developed models of British Muslim identity. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788310611 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

RECOGNIZING SUFISM

Contemplation in the Islamic Tradition Arthur F. Buehler Victoria University of Wellington

Sufism is all too often associated just with ‘mysticism’ in the West. The author of this new textbook, a former pupil of Annemarie Schimmel, suggests that conflating Sufism and mysticism is only partially valid. He shows that the vast majority of Sufi practice, both historically and in the contemporary world, has little or nothing to do with an esoteric transcendence but is rather focused on contemplative activity. Such practice might involve art, music, devotional shrine visitation – even politics and psychology. Placing Sufism in a wider Islamic contemplative context enables Arthur F Buehler to examine Sufi history against a backdrop that is richer and more inclusive than that portrayed in many competing introductory surveys. Discussing the origins of Sufism; the development of Sufi lineages (via three founder figures); Sufi lodges and the role of Sufism in colonial resistance; Sufi poetry; Sufi shrines, and Sufism in the West, the author rescues his topic from the idea that it means only union with the divine. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2016 9781848857902 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $28.00 9781848857896 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

Kitab al-’alim wa’l-ghulam James Morris (ed) University of Exeter

This volume includes a fully annotated translation and Arabic critical edition of one of the earliest surviving Ismaili Shi’i writings, by the famous Yemeni author Ja’far Ibn Mansur al-Yaman (ca. 270-345 All). The Master and the Disciple is important for its unique role as the most elaborate example of the narrated dramatic dialogue form in Arabic literature. Ja’far’s reputation as a master of ta’wil (esoteric understanding of the Qur’an) is reflected in the complex integration and existential elaboration of Qur’anic themes illustrated throughout this dialogue – a distinctive feature which makes this book of wider interest to students of Islamic Studies and comparative religion. 464 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2018 9781780764269 PAPERBACK £25.00 / $45.00 I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES e ebook available

EXPLORING THE QU’RAN

THE VISION OF RUMI

SOAS, London

University of Manchester The Masnavi is perhaps the single most influential piece of mystical writing ever conceived. Alan Williams here offers a novel approach to reading and understanding this great jewel of world literature, arguing that the work can only be fully comprehended if the ‘meaning’ of the text is understood to lie in the poetry itself, in the language. This revelatory unlocking enables Rumi’s voice and purpose to become fully transparent.

An Early Muslim Perspective on Divine Unity and Cosmology Hermann Landolt, The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London (Ed & Trans.) An ‘intellectual missionary’ of Fatimid Ismailism, Abu Yaqub al-Sijistaní was one of the most creative and original thinkers of tenth-century Islam. A prolific author, he was one of the major players in the debate between philosophers and theologians, providing an alternative vision of Islam that continues to have modern appeal. His Kashf al-Majub (‘the unveiling of the veiled’) is translated and published here. 304 PAGES 216 X 134 MM DECEMBER 2018 9781850438830 HARDBACK £39.50 / $45.00 ISMAILI TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES e ebook available

The Persian philosopher Ibn Sina, or Avicenna, was arguably the greatest master of Aristotelian thought in the Muslim world. The symbolical ‘Poem on the Soul’ (Qasidat al-nafs) is traditionally attributed to him. A highly significant commentary on the Qasida was written by Ali b. Muhammad b. al-Walid. In his view, the poem encapsulates Tayyibi beliefs, whose doctrines bear striking parallels with late antique Gnosticism. This book presents the Arabic text of Ibn al-Walid’s commentary, ‘The Useful Epistle’ (al-Risala al-mufida), alongside an English translation and extended introduction. It offers invaluable insight into the intricacies of Muslim thought and a deeper understanding of Avicenna’s legacy.

JEWISH STUDIES

ROOTLESS

NEW

A Jewish Journey David Goldberg What defines our identity? What gives us a sense of ‘rootedness’ in one place or another? What determines the places and communities in which we feel at home? In this book, Rabbi David Goldberg grapples with the idea of rootlessness – the feeling of never quite ‘belonging’. As a young Jewish boy, growing up in Manchester, Goldberg felt slightly removed from the northern city, a feeling which continued through education at Oxford University and rabbinic training at the Leo Baeck College. Goldberg has always argued the advantages of being both English and Jewish, the recipient of a double heritage that embraced William the Conqueror and Magna Carta on the one hand, and Abraham and Moses on the other. For him, broadly based, eclectic liberal humanism has been more enriching than religious parochialism, and being familiar with two cultures, therefore able to adapt almost anywhere in a western civic milieu, makes for a more rounded personality. Yet in this book he faces the realities of being ‘rootless’, unravelling the different pieces of identity and community which shaped him – and in doing so, identifies the factors which shape us all as individuals. 320 PAGES 216 X 135 MM JULY 2018 9781788312196 HARDBACK £20.00 / $30.00 e ebook available

HINDUISM AND THE DIVINE NEW

A New Introduction to Hindu Theology Rita D. Sherma

Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley

Sweetman’s nuanced text helps unravel the complex strands of one of the world’s remarkable systems of belief, identifying the chief ingredients of Hinduism’s rich and distinctive flavour. Offering a broadly thematic and historical overview of the thought and practice, the author explores the theological and philosophical abundance of this multi-faceted religion. 264 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 2017 9781848853287 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $24.50 9781848853270 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 I.B.TAURIS INTRODUCTIONS TO RELIGION e ebook available

With no fixed boundaries between theology and philosophy, or the sacred and the secular, Hinduism arguably has more theological oppositions and self-contradictions than any other religious tradition. Navigating such complexity is challenging. A book that explores the multi-faceted character of Hindu theology is much needed, and in her authoritative introduction Rita Sherma explores these nuances and elusive dichotomies in depth, thereby doing full justice to the great richness of Hinduism’s cultural legacy. She outlines the general features of Hindu theology and discusses the various characteristics of the divine, whether in the persons of Shiva,Vishnu or Mahadevi (the feminine manifestation of God). 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2018 9781784535322 PAPERBACK £16.99 / $29.00 9781784535315 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

CHINESE PHILOSOPHY A New Introduction

INDIAN PHILOSOPHY An Introduction Jeffery D. Long

NEW

Elizabethtown College

Ronnie L. Littlejohn Belmont University

The philosophical traditions of China have arguably influenced more human beings than any other. As Ronnie L Littlejohn shows, these traditions have for thousands of years formed the bedrock of the longest continuing civilization on the planet; and Chinese philosophy has profoundly shaped the institutions, social practices and psychological character of East and Southeast Asia. The author here surveys the key texts and philosophical systems of Chinese thinkers in a completely original and illuminating way. Ranging from the Han dynasty to the present, he discusses the six classical schools of Chinese philosophy; the arrival of Buddhism in China and its distinctive development; the central figures and movements from the end of the Tang dynasty to the introduction into China of Western thought; and the impact of Chinese philosophers on their equivalents in the West. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2015 9781784532628 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $27.00 9781784532611 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

THE HUMANIST PRINCIPLE On Compassion and Tolerance Felix Unger and Daisaku Ikeda

What is the nature of tolerance? Can it be engendered by religion? And how might different cultural traditions, whether religious or secular, assist in promulgating the vital principle of humanistic dialogue and benevolence? Bringing together a wealth of wisdom and experience in medical science and in Buddhist thought and ethics, the discussants together address issues of vital current concern. They examine the need for science to develop a proper ethical dimension, particularly in relation to weapons of war, if it is to realize its true potential.

The rich and varied philosophical traditions of India are among the oldest in the world and have given rise to schools of thought as diverse as Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Materialism and Vedanta. In his comprehensive new introduction, Jeffery D Long discusses these and other major schools of Indian philosophy. 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2018 9781784536466 PAPERBACK £19.95 / $29.00 9781784536459 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 e ebook available

Francis Young argues that while charges of treasonable magic certainly were used to destroy reputations or to ensure the convictions of undesirables, magic was also perceived as a genuine threat by English governments into the Civil War era and beyond. 256 PAGES 216 X 134 MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781788310215 HARDBACK £59.00 / $95.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF HISTORICAL STUDIES e ebook available

A Cultural History of Hell Margaret Kean University of Oxford

In her rich and wide-ranging book, Margaret Kean tells the history of hell through literature, philosophy, art, music and film. She shows that affirmations of human freedom and the value of the individual have remained closely tied to the notion of hell even as contemporary narratives have replaced a medieval mindset. From Dante and Bosch to Blake and Milton, and from Joseph Conrad and Primo Levi to Angel Heart, Alien 3 and Event Horizon, Kean vividly explores hell as both secular confessional and divinely ordained penal colony - as metaphor for alienation and infernal locale for one’s never-ending worst nightmare. 288 PAGES 228X155MM JUNE 2018 9781845119980 HARDBACK £20.00 e ebook available

The Great Enchanter Juliette Wood Cardiff University

Who can resist the allure of Merlin? In British and Celtic mythology, Merlinus Ambrosius is perhaps the most compelling of the many charismatic figures associated with King Arthur and the Grail. For 1500 years the great enchanter has ensnared legions of willing interpreters. In her ebullient new history, one of Britain’s foremost authorities on Welsh and Celtic folklore traces the ‘birth’ of Merlin in the writings of Geoffrey of Monmouth to the rise of the wise royal counsellor in Sir Thomas Malory; and disentangles the benign, donnish Merlin who lives time backwards in T H White’s The Once and Future King from the dangerous, atavistic Merlin of C S Lewis’ novel That Hideous Strength. Using both historical sources and intertwined strands of legend and myth,Wood shows that, whether in literature, art,TV or cinema, this primeval mage and sorcerer has been a constant, mesmerising presence. 288 PAGES 216 X 135MM MAY 2018 9781784539313 HARDBACK £18.99 / $30.00 e ebook available

Belief in the supernatural, and in black magic, has been central to European cultural life for 3,000 years. The History and Legends of Viking England Eleanor Parker Brasenose College, Oxford University

Why did the Vikings sail to England? Were they indiscriminate raiders, motivated solely by bloodlust and plunder? One narrative, the stereotypical one, might have it so. But locked away in the buried history of the British Isles are other, far richer and more nuanced, stories; and these hidden tales paint a picture very different from the ferocious pillagers of popular repute. 288 PAGES 216 X 135MM APRIL 2018 9781784537869 HARDBACK £20.00 / $35.00 e ebook available

ATHOS

NEW

The Holy Mountain Sydney Loch

Athos, the Holy Mountain of Greece, is one of the most mysterious places in the world. A rugged pyramid that rises up from the Aegean Sea, the mountain is wreathed in myth, legend and ancient traditions that, to this day, remain largely hidden from view. The heart of Athos started to beat at the dawn of Christianity and its community lays claim to being the oldest democracy in the world. An entirely autonomous region of the Hellenic Republic, it is home to twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries that cling to its rocky flanks. No women are allowed to set foot upon the peninsula and the monks who inhabit this isolated place still use the Julian calendar, living on ‘Byzantine Time’, where each day starts at sunset. While living in the mountain’s shadow, in Ouranopolis, Sydney Loch spent many years exploring Athos, and here he paints an enthralling portrait of the Holy Mountain. 288 PAGES 198 X 126MM MARCH 2017 9781784537999 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $19.00 TAURIS PARKE PAPERBACKS e ebook available

ABJECT EROTICISM IN NORTHERN RENAISSANCE ART The Witches and Femme Fatales of Hans Baldung Grien NEW Yvonne Owens Victoria College of Art in British Columbia

In his paintings and woodcut prints, Hans Baldung Grien gave powerful visual expression to late medieval tropes and stereotypes, such as the poison maiden, venomous virgin, the Fall of Man and ‘death and the maiden’. Offering new and provocative interpretations of Hans Baldung’s iconic witchcraft imagery, this book will be essential for historians of art, culture and gender relations in the late medieval and early modern periods. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2018 9781784537296 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 e ebook available
