Message from the Editors:
Our medieval list continues to grow rapidly and we are pleased to announce the appointment of a new editor, Anna Henderson, who will commission titles on medieval Europe. In addition to several new monographs in our collaborative series with the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean, for the general medievalist we will be publishing a reappraisal of the enduring and mesmerising legend of Merlin (p. 4), a thrilling romp through the secrets of Viking England (Dragon Lords by Eleanor Parker, p. 4) and a new history of the ‘maker of England’, Edmund I, from Francis Young (also p. 4). On the early modern world, 2018 marks the release of the first of Lauren Mackay’s much-anticipated Tudor duology, which will reveal the untold story of Anne Boleyn’s father and brother, and short histories of the Mongols and the Spanish Empire (p. 5 and p. 3, respectively). Moving to more recent history, we will be releasing a rare treatment of Zhou Enlai by renowned China expert Michael Dillon and a modern history of Syria by James Reilly. In European history we will be publishing a revealing biography of Franco by Enrique Moradiellos (p. 7), a moving account of World War II on the Greek island of Leros by Julie Peakman (p. 8) and a ground-breaking study of Churchill’s forgotten vision of Britain as a leading member of the European family (Churchill’s Last Stand by Felix Klos, p. 14). Finally, we are excited to announce The Library of Modern Russia, a new academic monograph series which will showcase the next generation of scholars working on (what is now) post-Soviet space, from the tsars to Putin. On the region for the general reader, we will also be publishing the first biography in any language of recently rediscovered satirist Teffi by Edythe Haber (p. 11) and Mischka’s War, a powerful account of post-war displacement by acclaimed historian Sheila Fitzpatrick (p. 12). EDMUND NEW
The Great Enchanter
NEW
In Search of England’s Lost King Francis Young
Juliette Wood Cardiff University Who can resist the allure of Merlin? In British and Celtic mythology, Merlinus Ambrosius is perhaps the most compelling of the many charismatic figures associated with King Arthur and the Grail. For 1500 years the great enchanter has ensnared legions of willing interpreters. In her ebullient new history, one of Britain’s foremost authorities on Welsh and Celtic folklore traces the ‘birth’ of Merlin in the writings of Geoffrey of Monmouth to the rise of the wise royal counsellor in Sir Thomas Malory; and disentangles the benign, donnish Merlin who lives time backwards in T H White’s The Once and Future King from the dangerous, atavistic Merlin of C S Lewis’ novel That Hideous Strength. Using both historical sources and intertwined strands of legend and myth,Wood shows that, whether in literature, art,TV or cinema, this primeval mage and sorcerer has been a constant, mesmerising presence. 288 PAGES 216 X 135MM MAY 2018 9781784539313 HARDBACK £18.99/$30

HISTORY 2018
Bury St. Edmunds’ present obscurity may conceal a find as significant as the emergence of the remains of Richard III. For Bury, as Francis Young now reveals, is the probable site of the body of Edmund: martyred monarch of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia and, well before St George, England’s first patron saint. 256 PAGES 216 X 135MM MARCH 2018 9781788311793 HARDBACK £20/$35

JESUS AND THE RISE OF NATIONALISM NEW IN PAPERBACK
A New Quest for the Nineteenth Century Historical Jesus Halvor Moxnes
In this vividly narrated history of the deadly conflict that engulfed the nation during the 1640s, Peter Gaunt shows that, with the exception of World War I, the death-rate was higher than any other contest in which Britain has participated. Numerous towns and villages were garrisoned, attacked, damaged or wrecked. The landscape was profoundly altered. Yet amidst all the blood and killing, the fighting was also a catalyst for profound social change and innovation. Charting major battles, raids and engagements, the author uses rich contemporary accounts to explore the life-changing experience of war for those involved, whether musketeers at Cheriton, dragoons at Edgehill or Cromwell’s disciplined Ironsides at Naseby (1645). 320 PAGES 216 X 135MM AUGUST 2017 9781788310598 PAPERBACK £12.99/$25

FRANCO
The Spanish Civil War in the Air Michael Alpert
Anatomy of a Dictator
Enrique Moradiellos University of Extremadura, Spain As a dictator who established his power prior to World War II and maintained it well into the 1970s, Franco was one of the most central figures of twentieth-century European history. In Spain today, he is a spectre from a regrettable recent past, uncomfortable yet still very real and significant. A study of his regime and its historical evolution sheds new light on fundamental questions of European history, including the social and cultural bases for totalitarian or authoritarian challenges to democracy and sources of political legitimacy grounded in the charisma of a leader. In this book, Enrique Moradiellos Garcia examines the dictatorship as well as the dictator and, in doing so, reveals new aspects to our understanding of General Franco, the Caudillo.

STATE AND SOCIETY IN COMMUNIST CZECHOSLOVAKIA Transforming the Everyday from WWII to the Fall of the Berlin Wall NEW Roman Krakovsky

University of Geneva
Julie Peakman
Royal Historical Society and Birkbeck College, University of London In September 1943, at the height of World War II, the Aegean island of Leros became the site of the most pivotal battle of the Dodecanese campaign as the British tried, in vain, to retain control of the island. Over the course of two short months, almost 1500 men lost their lives and hundreds more ended up in Prisoner-of-War camps. Julie Peakman, a modern-day resident of Leros, brings to life the story of the men caught up in the battle based on first-hand interviews and written accounts including diaries, letters and journals. She also shows the extent of the men’s despair at the allied surrender, the many subsequent daring escapes as well as the terrible years of incarceration for those who were captured and imprisoned. Many of the accounts of the battle are told here for the first time, providing a unique eyewitness take on this forgotten corner of World War II. 304 PAGES 216 X 135MM OCTOBER 2017 9781784532680 HARDBACK £20/$28

The Dark Road to Stalin’s Wartime Camps Marcel Krueger
This is the story of a grandmother, and what happened to her and to Eastern Europe in World War II. Following the tracks of his grandmother Cilly, or ‘Babushka’, into her vanished homeland of East Prussia and to the labour camps of the Soviet Union, Marcel Krueger interweaves contemporary landscape and family history into an poignant and evocative travel memoir. Babushka’s Journey is the record of his grandmother’s journey from the snow-covered battlefields of East Prussia in January 1945 to the Soviet labour camps in the Urals, where she spent five years before returning to Germany. As he stumbles through the bars of present-day Poland and dreams on the bunk beds of the Trans-Siberian railway, Krueger forges an authentic retelling of Cilly’s tragic yet hopeful story.

The Moscow Canal and the Creation of Soviet Space Cynthia Ruder
NEW
University of Kentucky Today the 80-mile-long Moscow Canal is a source of leisure, tourism and drinkable water for Muscovites. Yet the past looms heavy over the canal: it was built by Gulag inmates at the height of Stalinism and thousands died in the process. This books analyses current efforts to reclaim the legacy of the canal as a memorial space, ensuring those who suffered and died building it are remembered. Essential reading for all scholars working on the all-pervasive nature of Stalinism.

BRITAIN & THE EMPIRE
OFFICIAL SECRETS
LLOYD GEORGE
NEW
Investigating Intelligence and the British State Richard Norton-Taylor
David Lloyd George left a profound political legacy, despite being described by the wife of his successor, Herbert Asquith, as a ‘gambler without foresight’. He is, of course, best known as the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in World War I, but his contribution to domestic politics was similarly impressive. Providing a unique new perspective on one of the most phenomenally-talented – but also one of the most phenomenally-flawed – of British Prime Ministers, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in modern British politics and history.

THE RIGHT TO BELONG NEW
Citizenship and National Identity in Britain 1930-1960 Richard Weight and Abigail Beach
Felix Klos
After the Second World War, with much of Europe in ruins, the victorious Winston Churchill swore to build a peace across Europe that would last a generation. Fighting against the new ‘Iron Curtain’ which had fallen across the world, and battling the personal disappointment of losing the 1945 election in Britain, Churchill dedicated the rest of his life to forging a united Europe. This book, based in part on new evidence, reveals his vision: Britain as a leading member of the European family. Through Churchill’s own private papers, Felix Klos unveils Churchill’s personal battle to regain his place in world affairs, his confidential conversations with European leaders and the thinking and preparation behind some of his most powerful speeches. A beautifully written history of Europe after the war, and a new glimpse at one of its greatest statesmen. 368 PAGES 226 X 155MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781784538132 HARDBACK £25/$35

Farewell to Office Bernard Donoughue
Kenneth D. Brown Queen’s University Belfast
Herbert Gladstone (1854-1930) was the only one of the sons of the renowned nineteenth-century Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone to enjoy a significant political career in his own right.Yet he has been generally relegated to the wings of history’s stage, destined, it seems, to remain permanently in the shadow of his illustrious parent. Exploring the intimate connection between Herbert Gladstone’s public and private lives this new biography, the first for eighty years, reveals an unambitious, self-effacing man of faith and throws new light not only on his own career but also on significant episodes in British Victorian and early-twentieth century history. 320 PAGES 234 X 156MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788310246 HARDBACK £64/$99 LIBRARY OF VICTORIAN STUDIES

MAVERICK SPY NEW
Stalin’s Super-Agent in World War II Hamish MacGibbon
A few years before he died, James MacGibbon told his family that he had spied for the Soviet Union during World War II. Only after his death, when the author, his son Hamish, obtained access to restricted Soviet intelligence records, did the true significance of what James had revealed become clear. For over three years, from his position at the heart of the Intelligence Corps in the War Office and then in Washington, he provided the Russians with top secret information of immense military and diplomatic value. The material probably included plans for D-Day, received by Stalin seven month before the Normandy invasion. The author explains why his parents, from prosperous, conventional social backgrounds, joined the Communist Party; and why James felt obliged to become a Soviet agent. 256 PAGES 226 X 155MM AUGUST 2017 9781784537739 HARDBACK £20/$29

Working-Class Dress and Rural Life Rachel Worth Arts University Bournemouth
In the context of this rapidly changing world, Rachel Worth explores the ways in which the clothing of the rural working classes was represented visually in paintings and photographs and by the literary sources of documentary, autobiography and fiction, as well as by the particular pattern of survival and collection by museums of garments of rural provenance. Rachel Worth explores ways in which clothing and how it is represented throws light on wider social and cultural aspects of society, as well as how ‘traditional’ styles of dress, like men’s smock-frocks or women’s sunbonnets, came to be replaced by ‘fashion’. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2017 9781784533960 HARDBACK £64/$99

MORMONISM

An Introduction Malise Ruthven
Now that Donald Trump is Commander-in-Chief of the most powerful country on earth, Americans and non-Americans alike have been left wondering what this will mean for the world. It has been claimed that Trump’s foreign policy views are impulsive, inconsistent and improvised on the campaign trail. However, drawing on interviews from as far back as 1980, Charlie Laderman and Brendan Simms show that this assumption is dangerously false. They reveal that Trump has had a consistent position on international trade and America’s alliances since he first considered running for president. Furthermore, his foreign policy views have deep roots in American history.Yet, after decades of dismissing America’s leaders as fools and denouncing their diplomacy, Trump must now prove that he can do better. 144 PAGES 198 X 128MM JUNE 2017 9781788310482 PAPERBACK £6.99 / $8.95

At the heart of the Mormon story is a paradox: despite their present-day image as ‘archetypal Yankees’, Mormons were long seen as ‘un-American’ in their utopian socialism and in the hard battle they fought - and eventually lost - to preserve the sacred principle of polygamy. In his timely reappraisal of its apparent contradictions, Malise Ruthven discusses the emergence of Mormonism as a world religion. 264 PAGES 216 X 138MM SEPTEMBER 2018 9781780760117 PAPERBACK £14.99/$24.50 9781780760100 HARDBACK £64/$99 I.B.TAURIS INTRODUCTIONS TO RELIGION

RIVIERA DREAMING
NEW
An American Architect on the Côte d’Azur Maureen Emerson In 1926 a young American architect and his lover, an ex-officer in the British Army, moved to the south of France and built a white, flat-roofed Modernist masterpiece that rested on the rocks below the Esterel, with views across the Mediterranean. They called it Le Trident. From the moment it was built, it captivated Riviera society. As commissions for more villas flooded in, Barry Dierks and Eric Sawyer became the ‘darlings of the Riviera’. Riviera Dreaming provides an unparalleled portrait of life on the Cote d’Azur at the height of the Jazz Age. 264 PAGES 216 X 135MM MARCH 2018 9781788311625 HARDBACK £20/$29.50

In addition to articles in which Foner calls out politicians and the powerful for their abuse and misuse of American history, Foner ends with an open letterto Bernie Sanders analysing the great tradition of radicalism that he has spent his career studying and which, he argues, Americans of progressive disposition should seek to celebrate and retrieve. 240 PAGES 198 X 129MM JANUARY 2017 9781784537692 PAPERBACK £10.99/ $12.99

EVITA
A Modern History Jill Hedges
The Life of Eva Perón
University College London
Jill Hedges
Eva Perón remains Argentina’s most iconic personality, surpassing even sporting superstars such as Diego Maradona or Lionel Messi, and far outlasting her own husband, President Juan Domingo Perón. In this book, Jill Hedges tells the story of a woman whose glamour, charisma, political influence and controversial nature continue to generate huge amounts of interest 60 years after her death. From her poverty-stricken upbringing, Perón made her way to the highest echelons of society. Her charitable work earned her wide public acclaim and there was national mourning following her death from cancer at the age of just 33. Based on new sources and first-hand interviews, the book explores the personality and experiences of ‘Evita’ and the contemporary events that influenced her and were in turn influenced by her. As the first substantive biography of Eva Perón in English, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in modern Argentinean history and the cult of ‘Evita’.

THE SOUTH AMERICAN DIARIES John Hopkins
While writing a novel set in South America, John Hopkins travelled there to ‘reacquaint himself with the scene’. In 1972-3, he went by train, bus and boat from Mexico City to the centre of the continent. Hopkins travelled slowly, savouring every experience. But the journey was fraught with his angst-ridden strivings to write his novel and with the troubled love he had for Madeleine, his travelling companion. In these heat-scorched, tequila-infused pages, Hopkins paints a sultry, exquisite portrait of South America, and in so doing masters an art that he believed would forever elude him.
In the early twentieth century, Argentina possessed one of the world’s most prosperous economies, yet since then it has suffered a series of boom-and-bust cycles and has failed to create a post-independence national identity. Its political and social history have been marked by frictions, violence and a series of military coups d’état. Hedges analyses the modern history of Argentina, examining how factors have contributed to its political instability and economic fluctuation. 336 PAGES 228 X 155MM JUNE 2015 9781784531065 PAPERBACK £17.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

For centuries the waters of the Red Sea have been amongst the most hazardous and feared in the world. Strong or erratic winds have taken lives and broken boats, smashed against rocks or hidden sandbars. Pirates too have menaced: some out for booty alone; others for slaves. Central to this archetypal and perilous maritime scene has been the dhow, the versatile sailing craft that survives to this day and that for many hundreds of years has linked the commercial and pilgrim centres of sea and desert. In his new book, Dionisius A Agius, one of the foremost scholars of Islamic material culture, offers a lucid and wide-ranging history of the iconic dhow from medieval to modern times.

A History of Muslim Dreaming and Foreknowing Elizabeth Sirriyeh University of Leeds
People in Western societies have long been interested in their dreams and what they mean. However, few non-Muslims in the West are likely to seek interpretation of those dreams to help them make life-changing decisions. In the Islamic world the situation is quite different. Dreaming and the import of visions are here of enormous significance, to the degree that many Muslims believe that in their dreams they are receiving divine guidance: for example, on whether or not to accept a marriage proposal, or a new job opportunity. Elizabeth Sirriyeh offers the first concerted history of the rise of dream interpretation in Islamic culture, from medieval times to the present. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM NOVEMBER 2017 9781788310932 PAPERBACK £17.99/$25

REVOLTS AND THE MILITARY IN THE ARAB SPRING NEW
Popular Uprisings and the Politics of Repressions Sean Burns Northwestern University
Lady Anne Blunt was a woman ahead of her time. After marrying the poet Wilfrid Scawen Blunt in 1869, the pair travelled extensively in the Middle East, developing an especial fondness for the region and its people. In this book, Lisa Lacy explores the life, travels and political ideas of Lady Anne. With a broad knowledge of the Arab world, she challenged prevailing assumptions and, as a result of her aristocratic heritage, exerted strong influence in British political circles. Lacy shows that Lady Anne was her husband’s partner in marriage, politics and travel and exerted strong influence not only on his ideas, but on the ideas of the British political elite of the era. 272 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784531379 HARDBACK £69/$110 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF HISTORICAL STUDIES

POWER AND KNOWLEDGE IN MEDIEVAL ISLAM NEW
Shi’i and Sunni Encounters in Baghdad Tariq al-Jamil Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania
During the period of Mongol occupation from 1258-1386, Baghdad was a site of intense intellectual debate and dialogue between Shi’i and Sunni communities. Tarqi al-Jamil here contextualises the social and political climate of Iraq during this time, examining the dynamic and complex nature of Shi’i-Sunni relations and their competition for authority and legitimacy.
Through detailed exploration of events in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, Syria and Yemen, Sean Burns here breaks down the concept of professionalism within the armed forces into its component parts and demonstrates how variation in military structures determines their behaviour.

DEMOCRACY IN AFGHANISTAN
The Golden Era of Reform and the Roots of Modern Conflict NEW Bahar Jalali
Sir Mark Sykes, Imperialism and the Sykes-Picot Agreement Michael D Berdine
University of Arkansas and the American University of Afghanistan The decade of democratic reforms in Afghanistan, 1963– 1973, is often viewed as a ‘golden era’. Bahar Jalali demonstrates, however, that the roots of Afghanistan’s turbulent recent history can be traced back to precisely this period, when the swift implementation – and ultimately failure – of progressive reforms gave rise to extremist ideologies that would go on to become politically dominant over the next three decades. 336 PAGES 216 X 138MM MAY 2018 9781784538286 HARDBACK £62/$99 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF CENTRAL ASIAN STUDIES

SINO-IRANICA: CHINA AND ANCIENT IRAN NEW
Commodities and Culture from 500 BC to Medieval Times Berthold Laufer
Introduction by Brian Spooner, University of Pennsylvania
Elaheh Kheirandish Harvard University
Renowned as great centres of learning, the cities of Baghdad and Isfahan were at the heart of the Islamic ‘age of science’. Their distinct cultural voices inspired a unique historical dialogue, which finds new expression here. Charting the history of Baghdad and Isfahan from 750 to 1750, Elaheh Kheirandish draws on the voices of court astronomers, mathematicians, scientists, mystics, jurists, statesmen and Arabic and Persian translators and scholars. In a feat of travelogue and time travel, Kheirandish creates parallel stories with modern and historical characters, crossing cities worldwide, and capturing changes through time. 320 PAGES 234 X 156MM JUNE 2018 9781780768335 HARDBACK £69/$110 LIBRARY OF MIDDLE EAST HISTORY

The Syrian state is less than 100 years old, born from the wreckage of World War I. Today it stands in ruins, shattered by brutal civil war. But how did the lands that are today Syria survive incorporation with the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century and the trials and vicissitudes of the Sultan’s rule for four centuries, only to collapse into civil war in recent years? In charting Syria’s history over the last five centuries in their entirety for the first time, James Reilly demonstrates the myriad historical, cultural, social, economic and political factors that bind Syrians together, as well as those that have torn them apart. Based on primary sources, recent historiography in English, French and Arabic and more than 30 years’ experience living and working in the region, this is the essential book for understanding modern Syria and the Middle East.

The Civil War in Syria Nikolaos Van Dam
Following the Arab Spring, Syria descended into civil and sectarian conflict. It has since become a fractured warzone which operates as a breeding ground for new terrorist movements including ISIS as well as the root cause of the greatest refugee crisis in modern history. In this important book, former Special Envoy of the Netherlands to Syria, Nikolaos van Dam, explains the recent history of Syria, covering the growing disenchantment with the Asad regime, the chaos of civil war and the fractures which led to an immense amount of destruction in the refined social fabric of what used to be the Syrian nation. Through an in-depth examination, van Dam traces political developments within the Asad regime and the various opposition groups from the Arab Spring to the present day, and provides a deeper insight into the conflict and the possibilities and obstacles for reaching a political solution. 256 PAGES 198 X 129MM JULY 2017 9781784537975 PAPERBACK £8.99/ $15.95

NEW
The Life of the Great Amir Ahmad ibn Arabshah
NEW
Diversity of Traditions Farhad Daftary and Shainool Jiwa (Eds)
Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, New York University
The Fatimids ruled much of the Mediterranean world for over two centuries. From the conquest of Qayrawan in 909 to defeat at the hands of Saladin in 1171, the Fatimid caliphate governed a vast area stretching, at its peak, from the Red Sea in the East to the Atlantic Ocean in the West. Their leaders were distinctive in largely pursuing a policy of tolerance towards the religious and ethnic communities of their realm, and they embraced diverse approaches to the practicalities of administering a vast empire. This book presents little explored aspects of state-society relations such as the Fatimid model of the vizierate, Sunni legal responses to Fatimid observance, and the role of women in prayer. Highlighting the distinctive nature of the Fatimid empire and its legacy, this book will be of special interest to researchers in mediaeval Islamic history and thought.

Western Artists in the Middle East, 1830 - 1920

James Parry
In one of the most remarkable artistic pilgrimages in history, the nineteenth century saw scores of Western artists heading to the Middle East. Inspired by the allure of the exotic Orient, they went in search of subjects for their paintings. Orientalist Lives looks at what led this surprisingly diverse and idiosyncratic group of men - and some women - to often remote and potentially dangerous locations, from Morocco to Egypt, the Levant, and Turkey. There they lived, worked, and traveled for weeks or months on end, gathering material with which to create art for their clients back in the drawing-rooms of Boston, London, and Paris. Based on his research in museums, libraries, archives, galleries, and private collections across the world, James Parry traces these journeys of cultural and artistic discovery. 240 PAGES 210 X 240MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9789774168352 HARDBACK £45 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

The Hidden Armenians of Turkey Avedis Hadjian
In a world of rising tensions between Russia and the United States, the Middle East and Europe, Sunnis and Shiites, Islamism and liberalism, Turkey is at the epicentre. Leading Turkish expert Soner Cagaptay examine Erdogan’s roots in Turkish history, what he believes in and how he has cemented his rule, as well as what this means for the world. The book will also unpick the ‘threats’ Erdogan has worked to combat - from the liberal Turks to the Gulen movement, from coup plotters to Kurdish nationalists - all of which have culminated in the crisis of modern Turkey. 224 PAGES 216 X 135MM MAY 2017 9781784538262 HARDBACK £17.99 / $29.00

Murat Gül
Technical University of Istanbul Architecture and urban planning have always been used by political regimes to stamp their ideologies upon cities; this is especially the case in the modern Turkish Republic. By exploring Istanbul’s modern architectural and urban history, Murat Gül highlights the dynamics of political and social change in Turkey from the late Ottoman period to today. He offers critical insight into how Turkish attempts to modernise have affected both the city and its population. Charting the diverse forces evident in Istanbul’s urban fabric, the book examines late Ottoman reforms, the Turkish Republic’s turn westward, Cold War alliances and the AK Party’s reaffirmation of cultural ties with the Middle East and the Balkans. 336 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 2017 9781784531058 HARDBACK £75/$120 LIBRARY OF MODERN TURKEY

Turkey’s process of ‘modernisation’ developed rapidly during the second half of the twentieth century. New social and legal reforms were institutionalised and political and economic changes located the country as a more liberated, ‘Western-style’ society. This book provides a historical understanding of women’s experiences of this modernisation between 1950 and 1980. 336 PAGES 216 X 138MM JANUARY 2018 9781784537524 HARDBACK £62/$99

NESLISHAH
The Middle East Sir George Prothero
Twice a princess, twice exiled, Neslishah Sultan had an eventful life. When she was born in Istanbul in 1921, commemorative coins were issued in her name. But in 1922 the imperial family, including three-year-old Neslishah, were exiled. Sixteen years later, she married Prince Abdel Moneim, the son of the last khedive of Egypt, and became a princess of the ultimately doomed Egyptian royal family. Based on original documents and extensive personal interviews, this account of one woman’s extraordinary life is also the story of the end of two powerful dynasties thirty years apart. 384 PAGES 230 X 150MM NOVEMBER 2017 9789774168376 HARDBACK £24.99 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

Edward L Shaughnessy University of Chicago While digging a well in 1974, farmers in Shanxi made one of the world’s most astonishing discoveries. From their dusty grave emerged eight thousand life-size soldiers. The terracotta warriors, and the horses and chariots buried alongside them, are merely the most visible remnants of a civilization whose Neolithic beginnings in the Yellow River valley led to remarkable cultural advances. Espionage, Revolution and the Rise of Mao Panagiotis Dimitrakis
In 1927, Chiang Kai-shek – the leader of the Kuomintang (KMT) – began the ‘northern expeditions’ to bring China’s northern territories back under the control of the state. It was during this period that the KMT sparked the Chinese Civil War – which would rage for over twenty years. The communists, led by General Mao Tse-Tsung, were for much of the period forced underground and concentrated in the Chinese countryside. As the author argues, this resulted in China’s war featuring unusually high levels of espionage and sabotage, and increased the military importance of information gathering. Based on newly declassified material, Panagiotis Dimitrakis charts the double-crossings, secret meetings and bloody assassinations which would come to define China’s future. 416 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784539030 HARDBACK £75/$120 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY

SINGAPORE A Modern History Michael D. Barr Flinders University
NEW
Singapore gained independence in 1965, a city-state in a world of nation-states. Yet its long and complex history reaches much farther back. Blending modernity and tradition, ideologies and ethnicities, a peculiar set of factors make Singapore what it is today. In this thematic study of the island nation, Michael D. Barr proposes a new approach to understand this development. From the precolonial period through to the modern day, he traces the idea, the politics and the geography of Singapore over five centuries of rich history. In doing so he rejects the official narrative of the so-called ‘Singapore Story’. Drawing on in-depth archival work and oral histories, Singapore: A Modern History is a work both for students of the country’s history and politics, but also for any reader seeking to engage with this enigmatic and vastly successful nation. 312 PAGES 226 X 155MM JUNE 2018 9781780763057 HARDBACK £25/$40

Nicholson of Delhi Stuart Flinders
Given its peripheral location, the history of the ‘eastern frontier’ in this period has often been shown through the lens of expanding empires. In this book, Robert Haug argues for a pre-modern Central Asia with a discrete identity, a region that is not just a transitory space or the far-flung corner of empires, but its own historical entity. 352 PAGES 216 X 138MM MAY 2018 9781788310031 HARDBACK £75/$120 EARLY AND MEDIEVAL ISLAMIC WORLD

The Age of Decline and Revival (Volume 4) Christoph Baumer
NEW
In the concluding volume of his acclaimed Central Asia quartet, Christoph Baumer shows how China in the east, and Russia in the northwest, succeeded in throwing off the Mongol yoke to become the masters of their own previous rulers. He suggests that, as traditional transcontinental trade routes declined in importance, it was the cold war between Imperial Russia and Great Britain which finally brought Central Asia back into play as a region of strategic importance. This epic history concludes with an assessment of the transition to modern independence of the Central Asian states and their struggle to contain radical Islamism. 352 PAGES 289 X 237MM MAY 2018 9781788310499 HARDBACK £30/$39.50

Sparked by the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi in Sidi Bouzid in Tunisia, a wave of protests and uprisings spread across North Africa and the Middle East in late 2010 and 2011. The case of Tunisia has since been held up as an example of a ‘successful’ revolution, leading to relatively free elections in October 2011. Here, Daniel Zisenwine looks at Tunisia under the rule of Ben Ali, from 1987 when he rose to power until the 2011 protests that led to his downfall. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM JUNE 2018 9781784531850 HARDBACK £64/$99 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

How did women create a sense of belonging in a city that actively denied and resisted their presence? Through detailed analyses of women’s management of domestic economies, their participation in township social organisations, their home renovation priorities and patterns of energy use, this study evokes a larger history of gendered and generational struggles over identity, place and belonging. It provides a deeper understanding of African women in apartheid and post-apartheid society, and of urbanisation in South Africa. 296 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784537852 PAPERBACK £25/$45

ARISTOCRATS AND ARCHAEOLOGISTS
An Edwardian Journey on the Nile NEW Toby Wilkinson & Julian Platt
The discovery of ancient Egypt and the development of Egyptology are momentous events in intellectual and cultural history. The history of Egyptology is the story of the people, famous and obscure, who constructed the picture of ancient Egypt that we have today, recovered the Egyptian past while inventing it anew, and made a lost civilization comprehensible to generations of enchanted readers and viewers thousands of years later. This, the third of a three-volume history of Egyptology, follows the progress of the discipline from the trauma of the First World War, through the vicissitudes of the twentieth century, and into Egyptology’s new horizons at the beginning of the twenty-first century. 448 PAGES 230X 150 MM AUGUST 2017 9789774167607 HARDBACK £24.99 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

A collection of letters in a small box passed down through three generations of a London family is the starting point for a vivid account of a three-month journey up and down the Nile in a bygone age. THE BRITISH IN EGYPT
Community, Crime and Crises, 1882-1922 Lanver Mak NEW IN PAPERBACK Egypt during the British occupation (1882-1922) was a strategically important site for securing British interests in the region. Most studies of Britons in Egypt during the occupation focus on the lives and activities of law-abiding British military and political elites. Using a variety of primary sources, this book deepens our understanding of the hidden British community beyond these elites - the lower and working classes, and those engaged in crime and misconduct. It will be essential reading for historians of British imperialism, Egypt and the Middle East. 336 PAGES 216 X 138MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788310888 PAPERBACK £25/$35

The Diary of Julie Manet NEW Julie Manet
Translated and Edited by Jane Roberts
Julie Manet, the niece of Eugène Manet and the most famous female Impressionist artist, Berthe Morisot, was born in Paris on 14th November 1878 into a wealthy and cultured milieu at the height of the Impressionist era. At the age of ten, Julie began writing her “memoirs” but it wasn’t until August 1893, at fourteen, that Julie began her diary in earnest: no neat leather-bound volume with lock and key but just untidy notes scribbled in old exercise books, often in pencil, the presentation as spontaneous as its contents. Her extraordinary diary – newly translated here by an expert of Impressionism, reveals a vivid depiction of a vital period in France’s cultural history seen through the youthful and precocious eyes of the youngest member of what was surely the most prominent artistic families of the time. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784539245 PAPERBACK £15.99/$24.50

A Cultural History of Hell Margaret Kean University of Oxford
Eternal fire, diabolical torment, graphic mortification of the flesh and a smoke-filled underworld pierced by the despairing shrieks of the damned: the idea of Hell has for thousands of years exerted both fascination and terror. And despite its horrors, it is hard to resist its almost seductive allure. Whether expressed in medieval Doom paintings and grim warnings of everlasting suffering, or in modern psychological interpretations, the belief in a ghastly terminus for the souls of the cursed has proved remarkably resilient and persistent. It has far outlived specific portrayals by artists, writers and theologians, and has seemed far more resonant an idea than either a heavenly Paradise or New Jerusalem. Why has hell retained this extraordinary potency, even as western society has become more sceptical and secular? In her rich and wide-ranging book, Margaret Kean tells the history of hell through literature, philosophy, art, music and film.

A Literary Guide for Travellers Jules Stewart
There is so much in the modern world which has its origins in Greece, most notably language and literature. As Shelley once said, ‘We are all Greeks’. Travelling from Athens to the scattered islands of the Ionian and Aegean seas, the words of literary titans in the West echo through the centuries: from Homer and Plato to Byron, Flaubert and Twain; Henry Miller to John Fowles; the Durrells to Patrick Leigh Fermor and Cavafy, Kazantzakis and Seferis.Their luminous portraits of Greece enrich our own experiences of the country and shed light on a dramatic and often tragic past. 304 PAGES 198 X 129MM AUGUST 2017 9781784533809 HARDBACK £16.99 / $25 LITERARY GUIDES FOR TRAVELLERS

The Tragedy of Success, 1929-44 David Frey United States Military Academy, Westpoint
Between 1929 and 1942, Hungary’s motion picture industry experienced meteoric growth. Yet by 1944, Hungary’s cinema was in shambles, internal and external forces having destroyed its unification experiments and productive capacity. This original cultural and political history examines the birth, unexpected ascendance, and wartime collapse of Hungary’s early sound cinema by placing it within a complex international nexus. David Frey demonstrates how the transnational process of forging an industry designed to define a national culture proved particularly contentious and surprisingly contradictory in the heyday of racial nationalism and antisemitism. 464 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781780764511 HARDBACK £75/$120 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY
