Message from the Editor: At I.B.Tauris we have always recognized the great diversity of modern belief. Our list is thus deliberately pluralistic and multi-faith in its outlook – while all the publishing that we do in this subject explores aspects of religiosity as a vital manifestation of human identity. Just as we are interested in the contemporary articulation of the religions, we are likewise engaged in complex discussions of their heritage, history and development. Ranging across the world and between the centuries, our authors – from whichever tradition or background they come – are interested fundamentally in how people, in their many different ways, have approached the idea of divinity. My hope is that the learning and scholarship now presented in our 2017 list will engage a multiplicity of readers, reflecting the wide variety of perspectives which these volumes themselves represent.

I.B.TAURIS HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Designed for students, scholars and general readers alike, the I.B.Tauris Religion is intended to offer something for everyone. Both individually and collectively, our writers suggest that we can only properly understand ourselves unless we also understand how human beings have expressed themselves religiously. The implications of this – for politics, society, culture and international relations – remain striking and highly relevant. In a world wracked by violence, and facing such enormous challenges, there has perhaps never been a better time to study religion, which remains a prime motivating factor in global affairs and whose underlying message of amity arguably needs to be heard louder than ever before.

ISLAM

BUDDHISM

An Introduction Catharina Raudvere

An Introduction Alexander Wynne Dhammachai Tipitaka Project, Thailand

University of Copenhagen

In this comprehensive textbook, Wynne shows that the story of Buddhism as a global system of belief begins with the life of the Buddha in northern India in the fifth century. He discusses the many new advances that have been made with regard to its origins, and traces the ways that formative Indian doctrines helped shape the features of later Asian Buddhism.

Assessing Islam as a truly global phenomenon, Raudvere engages thoroughly with history (explaining the significance of the revelation of the Prophet Muhammad and the origins of the different Sunni and Shi’a communities within Islam), while also giving full and comprehensive coverage to Muslim ritual life and Islamic ethics.

Was he a dangerous subversive, executed because he declared himself to be the Son of God: a clear challenge to the political order? A History John Binns

University of Cambridge

Ethiopia has the longest archaeological record of any country in the world: indeed, this precipitous mountain land was where the human race began. It is also home to an ancient church with a remarkable legacy. The Church of Ethiopia is the only pre-colonial church in sub-Saharan Africa; today it has a membership of around forty million and is rapidly growing. John Binns explains how its special features have shaped the life of the Ethiopian people, and how political changes since the overthrow of Haile Selassie have forced the Church to rethink its identity and mission. He discusses the famous rock-hewn churches; the Ark of the Covenant (claimed by the Church and housed in Aksum); medieval monasticism; relations with the Coptic Church; centuries of co-existence with Islam; missionary activity; and the Church’s venerable oral traditions of poetic allegorical reflection. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536954 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

Donna Haraway argued in her famous 1991 ‘Cyborg Manifesto’ that people have themselves evolved into cyborgs. This striking idea has had considerable influence within critical theory, cultural studies and even science fiction. In his innovative new book, Scott Midson boldly argues that the deeper nuances of Haraway’s and the cyborg idea can similarly rejuvenate theology, mythology and anthropology. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 2017 9781784537876 HARDBACK £59.00 / $9500 e ebook available

Religious Reform and Social Revolution in Bohemia NEW IN PAPERBACK

Thomas A. Fudge University of New England, Australia

National Gallery, London

William Blake famously imagined ‘Jerusalem builded here’ in London. But Blake was not the first or the last to visualize a shimmering new metropolis on the banks of the River Thames. For example, the Romans erected a temple to Mithras in their ancient city of Londinium; medieval Londoners created Temple Church in memory of the Holy Sepulchre in which Jesus was buried; and Christopher Wren reshaped the skyline of the entire city with his visionary dome and spires after the Great Fire of London in 1666. In the modern period, the fabric of London has been rewoven in the image of its many immigrants from the Caribbean, South Asia, Eastern Europe and elsewhere. While previous books have examined literary depictions of the city, this is the first examination of the religious imaginary of the metropolis through the prism of the visual arts. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536619 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 e ebook available

CHRISTIAN STUDIES & THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY

I.B.TAURIS HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH General Editor: G.R. Evans, University of Cambridge

‘The new I.B.Tauris History of the Christian Church has quickly established an enviable reputation for impressive scholarship’ – Journal of Ecclesiastical History THE CHURCH IN THE EARLY MODERN AGE

NEW

C. Scott Dixon, Queen’s University, Belfast

The years 1450-1650 were a momentous period for the development of Christianity. C. Scott Dixon explores how the ideas that went into the making of early modern Christianity re-oriented the Church to such an extent that they gave rise to new versions of the religion. He shows how the varieties and ambivalences of late medieval theology were now replaced by dogmatic certainties, where the institutions of Christian churches became more effective and ‘modern’, staffed by well-trained clergy. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM MARCH 2016 9781845114398 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 4

256 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2008 9781845113667 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 1

6

How did the early Christians manage to establish a religion and institution which, despite persecution, flourished and grew? How did their initial experience of being a despised minority in the Roman Empire shape their sense of privileged identity and uniqueness? And how was it that – at least at the outset – the first believers were able to exist alongside the same shared traditions, rituals and beliefs of the Jews, despite the Jewish rejection of Jesus as Messiah? Morwenna Ludlow discusses the fragile context as well as the emerging core beliefs of the early Church (including divine creation, salvation, eschatology, the humanity and divinity of Christ and the inter-relationships of the Trinity) between 50 and 600 CE.

THE CHURCH IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES G.R. Evans University of Cambridge

256 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2007 9781845111502 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 2

The creation of a new history of the Church at the beginning of the third millennium is an ambitious but necessary project. Perhaps nowhere is it needed more than in re-describing the Church’s development – its life and its thinking – in the period that followed the end of the ‘early Church’ in antiquity. The cultural, social and political dominance of Christendom in what we now call ‘the West’, from about 600-1300, made the Christian Church a shaper of the modern world in respects which go far beyond its religious influence. Writing with her customary authority, and with a magisterial grasp of the original sources, G R Evans brings this formative era vividly to life.

Norman Tanner Gregorian University, Rome

Writing with characteristic mastery of the sources, Norman Tanner challenges this negative view, examining a vibrant period of ecclesiastical history in its own right rather than just through the lenses of the centuries that preceded and succeeded it. He discusses the trials of the age in the form of the papal schism between 1378-1417, the heresies of Cathars, Lollards and Hussites, the Hundred Years’ War, and the terror of the Black Death. Yet he focuses, too, on the great ecumenical councils, the flowering of intellectual life in the Renaissance and the extraordinarily rich spirituality of mystics like Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Siena and Meister Eckhart.

THE CHURCH IN THE LONG EIGHTEENTH CENTURY

David Hempton Harvard University 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2011 9781845114404 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 5

David Hempton’s history of the vibrant period between 1650 and 1832 engages with a truly global story: that of Christianity not only in Europe and North America, but also in the wider world. Examining eighteenthcentury religious thought in its sophisticated national and social contexts, the author relates the narrative of the Church to the rise of religious enthusiasm pioneered by Pietists, Methodists, Evangelicals and Revivalists, and by important leaders like August Hermann Francke, Jonathan Edwards and John Wesley. Winner of the Albert C. Outler Prize of the American Society of Church History, 2012

Frances Knight University of Nottingham

Frances Knight addresses the crucial question of how Christianity contributed to individual identity in a context of of widespread urbanization and modernization. She explores important topics such as the Evangelical revival led by the likes of the founder of the Christian Mission – later the Salvation Army – William Booth; the Oxford Movement under Newman, Keble and Pusey; Mormonism and Protestant revivalism in the USA; socialism and the impacts of Karl Marx and anarchism; continuing theological divisions between Protestants and Catholics; and the development of pilgrimage and devotion at places like Lourdes and Knock.

256 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2007 9781845113179 HARDBACK £29.50 / $49.00 VOL. 7

Given the diversity and complexity of developments in the twentieth century, a history of the Christian Church in the modern period is in some ways the most challenging volume of all to write. But Jeremy Morris succeeds in presenting a coherent account of the Church. He emphasizes the changing relationship of Western churches to the many forms of Christianity in other parts of the world, while also departing from the Eurocentric worldview of previous histories.

THE ENGLISH REVOLUTION AND THE CIVIL WARS NEW

MEDIEVAL CHRISTIANITY G.R. Evans

David J. Appleby University of Nottingham

Ranging widely from the fall of Rome to the ideas of the Reformation, the author addresses vital topics like the appeal of monasticism, the lure of the Crusades, the rise of the friars and the acute crisis of heresy. As Evans reveals, medieval Christianity was shaped above all by its promise of salvation or eternal perdition.

The author creatively explores the tensions that led to the outbreak of hostilities, and guides the reader through the twists and turns of events, from Edgehill to Naseby (1645) and from the First Bishops’ War in Scotland in 1639 to Parliament’s daring amphibious assault on royalist Barbados in 1651.

Helen L. Parish

Halvor Moxnes

University of Oslo The author shows how the writings of the New Testament came into being from oral transmission and then became the pillar of a great world religion. He explores their many varied usages in music, liturgy, art, language and literature. In discussing its textual origins, as well as its later reception, Moxnes shows above all how the New Testament has been employed both as a tool for liberation and as a means of power and control.

University of Reading Drawing on the most recent historiography, Helen L. Parish locates the Protestant Reformation in its many cultural, social and political contexts. She assesses the Reformers’ impact on art and architecture; on notions of authority, scripture and tradition; and – reflecting on the extent to which the printing press helped spread Reformation ideas – on oral, print and written culture. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MARCH 2016 9781780766102 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 9781780766096 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 e ebook available

RELIGION IN THE ROMAN WORLD

The Role of Religious and Moral Values in the Modern World Robin W. Lovin

NEW

Gods, Myth and Magic in Ancient Rome Juliette Harrisson Newman University, Birmingham The Romans had a persisting and voracious appetite for myth, magic and ritual. They burned fragrant resin for the protecting deities of hearth and home. They sacrificed at temples to bring glory to the divine person of the emperor. And they conducted secret rites of initiation into cults like those devoted to Isis, Cybele, Dionysus and Mithras. In Juliette Harrison’s new and comprehensive survey, she takes her readers from the turmoil of the Late Republic to the high point of imperial rule.

Law, Policy-Making and the Diyanet Emir Kaya Yildirim Beyazit University in Ankara

Aptin Khanbaghi University of Cambridge

Far from fading away after the Arab conquest, the inhabitants of the Iranian plateau and of Mesopotamia were central players region’s history. Yet the magnitude of their contribution to the emergence of the early Islamic world has hitherto been neglected. In this groundbreaking study, Khanbaghi offers a comprehensive discussion of those groups that resisted assimilation to the new Islamic order yet participated actively in the socio-political life of their homeland. Aptin Khanbaghi has written an important and fascinating book which aims to present a thorough evaluation of the historical contributions made by religious minorities to the societal and cultural physiognomy of the lands of Iran in pre-modern and early modern times. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784537463 PAPERBACK £15.99/$25.00 e ebook available

DHARMA

NEW

The Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh Traditions of India Veena R. Howard

California State University, Fresno

Dharma is central to all the indigenous religious traditions of India, which cannot adequately be understood apart from it. Often translated as ‘ethics’, ‘religion’ or ‘religious law’, dharma possesses elements of each of these but is not confined to any single category. Neither is it the equivalent of what many in the West might usually consider to be ‘a philosophy’. This much-needed analysis of the history and heritage of dharma shows that it is instead a multi-faceted religious force, or paradigm, that has defined and that continues to shape South Asian civilization in a whole multitude of forms. Experts in the fields of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh studies here bring fresh insights to dharma in terms both of its distinctiveness and its commonality as these are expressed across, and between, the local religions of India. 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2017 9781784532642 PAPERBACK £17.99 / $30.00 9781784532635 HARDBACK £59.00 / $95.00 e ebook available

THE ISLAMIC-BYZANTINE FRONTIER NEW IN PAPERBACK

Interaction and Exchange Among Muslim and Christian Communities A. Asa Eger University of North Carolina For centuries, Byzantine and Islamic scholars have evocatively sketched a contested border: the annual raids between the two, the line of fortified fortresses defending Islamic lands, the no-man’s land in between and the birth of jihad. In their early representations of a Muslim-Christian encounter, accounts of the Islamic-Byzantine frontier are charged with significance for a future ‘clash of civilizations’ that often envisions a polarised world. 432 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784539191 PAPERBACK £19.99 / $29.50 e ebook available

Wahhabi Power Behind the Saudi Throne David Commins Dickinson College Wahhabism has been generating controversy since it first emerged in Arabia in the eighteenth century. In the wake of September 11th instant theories have emerged that try to root Osama Bin Laden’s attacks on Wahhabism. Muslim critics have dismissed this conservative interpretation of Islam that is the official creed of Saudi Arabia as an unorthodox innovation that manipulated a suggestible people to gain political influence. David Commins’ book questions this assumption. 304 PAGES 216X135MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784536824 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 e ebook available

Context and Impact

NEW IN PAPERBACK

Legend, History and the Ancient City Michael Seymour Metropolitan Museum of Art

Muhammad Abdel Haleem SOAS, London

The teachings, style and impact of the Qur’an have always been matters of controversy, among both Muslims and non-Muslims. This major new book by one of the world’s finest Islamic scholars responds to that urgency. Building on his earlier groundbreaking work, the author challenges misinterpretations of particular Qur’anic verses from whatever quarter. He addresses the infamous ‘sword’ verse, frequently cited as a justification for jihad. He also questions the ‘tribute’ verse, associated with the Muslim state subjugating Jews and Christians; and the idea of Paradise in the Qur’an, often viewed by the West as emphasizing merely physical pleasures, or used by Islamic fighters as their just reward for holy war. The author argues that wrenching the verses out of the context of the whole has led to dangerous ideologies being built on isolated phrases which have then assumed afterlives of their own. 360 PAGES 226X155MM APRIL 2017 9781780763651 HARDBACK £29.99 / $45.00 e ebook available

THE ORIGINS OF ISIS NEW

The Collapse of Nations and Revolution in the Middle East

Simon Mabon and Stephen Royle Both at Lancaster University The rapid expansion of ISIS and its swathe of territorial gains across the Middle East have been headline news since 2013. Yet much media attention and analysis has been focused upon the military exploits, brutal tactics and radicalization methods employed by the group. While ISIS remains a relatively new phenomenon, it is important to consider the historical and local dynamics that have shaped the emergence of the group in the past decade. In this book Simon Mabon and Stephen Royle provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the roots, tactics and ideology of the group, exploring the interactions of the various participants involved in the formative stages of ISIS. Based on original scholarly sources and first-hand research in the region, this book provides an authoritative look at the emergence of one of the defining forces of the early twenty-first century. 256 PAGES 198 X 126MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536961 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 e ebook available

THE MOSQUES OF EGYPT

NEW

Bernard O’Kane

American University in Cairo Less than ten years after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, the new religion of Islam arrived in Egypt with the army of Amr ibn al-As in AD 641. Amr immediately established his capital at al-Fustat, just south of modern Cairo, and there he built Africa’s first mosque. Since then, governors, caliphs, sultans, amirs, beys, pashas, among others, have built mosques, madrasas, and mausoleums throughout Egypt in a changing sequence of architectural styles. In this fully colour-illustrated, large-format volume, a leading historian of Islamic art and culture celebrates the great variety of Egypt’s mosques and related religious buildings. 404 PAGES 305 X 250MM DECEMBER 2016 9789774167324 HARDBACK £50.00 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS e ebook available

What is the Gülen Movement and why is Erdogan so convinced that the organization was behind the failed military coup of 15th July 2016? RECOGNIZING SUFISM NEW

Contemplation in the Islamic Tradition Arthur F. Buehler Victoria University of Wellington

Sufism is all too often associated just with ‘mysticism’ in the West. The author of this new textbook, a former pupil of Annemarie Schimmel, suggests that conflating Sufism and mysticism is only partially valid. He shows that the vast majority of Sufi practice, both historically and in the contemporary world, has little or nothing to do with an esoteric transcendence but is rather focused on contemplative activity. Such practice might involve art, music, devotional shrine visitation – even politics and psychology. Placing Sufism in a wider Islamic contemplative context enables Arthur F Buehler to examine Sufi history against a backdrop that is richer and more inclusive than that portrayed in many competing introductory surveys. Discussing the origins of Sufism; the development of Sufi lineages (via three founder figures); Sufi lodges and the role of Sufism in colonial resistance; Sufi poetry; Sufi shrines, and Sufism in the West, the author rescues his topic from the idea that it means only union with the divine. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2016 9781848857902 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $28.00 9781848857896 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

Colonialism and the Supreme Muslim Council NEW Nicholas E. Roberts Sewanee: The University of the South

Kitab al-’alim wa’l-ghulam James Morris (ed) University of Exeter

This volume includes a fully annotated translation and Arabic critical edition of one of the earliest surviving Ismaili Shi’i writings, by the famous Yemeni author Ja’far Ibn Mansur al-Yaman (ca. 270-345 All). The Master and the Disciple is important for its unique role as the most elaborate example of the narrated dramatic dialogue form in Arabic literature. Ja’far’s reputation as a master of ta’wil (esoteric understanding of the Qur’an) is reflected in the complex integration and existential elaboration of Qur’anic themes illustrated throughout this dialogue – a distinctive feature which makes this book of wider interest to students of Islamic Studies and comparative religion. 464 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2017 9781780764269 PAPERBACK £25.00 / $45.00 I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES e ebook available

THE VISION OF RUMI Concerns about the place of Islam in Palestinian politics are familiar to those studying the history of the modern Middle East. A vital part of this history is the rise of Islamic opposition to the British in Mandate Palestine during the 1920s and 1930s. This new volume tells the story of the search for a viable Islamic institution in Palestine and the subsequent invention of the Supreme Muslim Council. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784531355 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF MIDDLE EAST HISTORY e ebook available

Revealing the Masnavi, Persia’s Great Masterpiece Alan Williams University of Manchester The Masnavi is perhaps the single most influential piece of mystical writing ever conceived. Alan Williams here offers a novel approach to reading and understanding this great jewel of world literature, arguing that the work can only be fully comprehended if the ‘meaning’ of the text is understood to lie in the poetry itself, in the language. This revelatory unlocking enables Rumi’s voice and purpose to become fully transparent. 224 PAGES 228X155MM JULY 2017 9781780766256 HARDBACK £25.00 / $39.00 e ebook available

An Early Muslim Perspective on Divine Unity and Cosmology Hermann Landolt, The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London (Ed & Trans.) An ‘intellectual missionary’ of Fatimid Ismailism, Abu Yaqub al-Sijistaní was one of the most creative and original thinkers of tenth-century Islam. A prolific author, he was one of the major players in the debate between philosophers and theologians, providing an alternative vision of Islam that continues to have modern appeal. His Kashf al-Majub (‘the unveiling of the veiled’) is translated and published here. 304 PAGES 216 X 134 MM AUGUST 2016 9781850438830 HARDBACK £39.50 / $45.00 ISMAILI TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES e ebook available

The Persian philosopher Ibn Sina, or Avicenna, was arguably the greatest master of Aristotelian thought in the Muslim world. The symbolical ‘Poem on the Soul’ (Qasidat al-nafs) is traditionally attributed to him. A highly significant commentary on the Qasida was written by Ali b. Muhammad b. al-Walid. In his view, the poem encapsulates Tayyibi beliefs, whose doctrines bear striking parallels with late antique Gnosticism. This book presents the Arabic text of Ibn al-Walid’s commentary, ‘The Useful Epistle’ (al-Risala al-mufida), alongside an English translation and extended introduction. It offers invaluable insight into the intricacies of Muslim thought and a deeper understanding of Avicenna’s legacy. 192 PAGES 216 X 134 MM OCTOBER 2015 9781784530884 HARDBACK £29.50 / $58.00 ISMAILI TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS | I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES e ebook available

HINDUISM AND THE DIVINE NEW

A New Introduction to Hindu Theology Rita D. Sherma

Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley

Sweetman’s nuanced text helps unravel the complex strands of one of the world’s remarkable systems of belief, identifying the chief ingredients of Hinduism’s rich and distinctive flavour. Offering a broadly thematic and historical overview of the thought and practice, the author explores the theological and philosophical abundance of this multi-faceted religion. 264 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 2017 9781848853287 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $24.50 9781848853270 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 I.B.TAURIS INTRODUCTIONS TO RELIGION e ebook available

With no fixed boundaries between theology and philosophy, or the sacred and the secular, Hinduism arguably has more theological oppositions and self-contradictions than any other religious tradition. Navigating such complexity is challenging. A book that explores the multi-faceted character of Hindu theology is much needed, and in her authoritative introduction Rita Sherma explores these nuances and elusive dichotomies in depth, thereby doing full justice to the great richness of Hinduism’s cultural legacy. She outlines the general features of Hindu theology and discusses the various characteristics of the divine, whether in the persons of Shiva,Vishnu or Mahadevi (the feminine manifestation of God). 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2017 9781784535322 PAPERBACK £16.99 / $29.00 9781784535315 HARDBACK £64.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

BUDDHIST STUDIES

CHINESE PHILOSOPHY

INDIAN PHILOSOPHY The Essential Writings Jeffery D. Long

NEW

Elizabethtown College

An New Introduction Ronnie L. Littlejohn Belmont University

The philosophical traditions of China have arguably influenced more human beings than any other. As Ronnie L Littlejohn shows, these traditions have for thousands of years formed the bedrock of the longest continuing civilization on the planet; and Chinese philosophy has profoundly shaped the institutions, social practices and psychological character of East and Southeast Asia. The author here surveys the key texts and philosophical systems of Chinese thinkers in a completely original and illuminating way. Ranging from the Han dynasty to the present, he discusses the six classical schools of Chinese philosophy; the arrival of Buddhism in China and its distinctive development; the central figures and movements from the end of the Tang dynasty to the introduction into China of Western thought; and the impact of Chinese philosophers on their equivalents in the West.

Jeffery Long offers a judicious and wideranging selection of the key texts that form the basis for the major schools of Indian philosophy. Chronologically structured with up-to-date translations and a focus on modern as well as classical and pre-classical texts, the author presents the continuing contributions of Indian philosophy to international thought.

THE HUMANIST PRINCIPLE On Compassion and Tolerance Felix Unger and Daisaku Ikeda

NEW

What is the nature of tolerance? Can it be engendered by religion? And how might different cultural traditions, whether religious or secular, assist in promulgating the vital principle of humanistic dialogue and benevolence? Bringing together a wealth of wisdom and experience in medical science and in Buddhist thought and ethics, the discussants together address issues of vital current concern. They examine the need for science to develop a proper ethical dimension, particularly in relation to weapons of war, if it is to realize its true potential.

Spirit Possession, Music, and Healing Rituals in Egypt Hager El Hadidi

The Enduring Legend of the Holy Grail Juliette Wood

Zar is both a possessing spirit and a set of reconciliation rites between the spirits and their human hosts: living in a parallel yet invisible world, the capricious spirits manifest their anger by causing ailments for their hosts, which require ritual reconciliation, a private sacrificial rite practiced routinely by the afflicted devotees. This new ethnographic study of zar in Egypt is based on the author’s two years of multi-sited fieldwork and firsthand knowledge as a participant, and her collection and analysis of more than three hundred zar songs.

THE LANCASHIRE WITCHES NEW

A Chronicle of Sorcery and Death on Pendle Hill Philip C. Almond University of Queensland

In the febrile religious and political climate of late sixteenth-century England, when the grip of the Reformation was as yet fragile and insecure, and underground papism still perceived to be rife, Lancashire was felt by the Protestant authorities to be a sinister corner of superstition, lawlessness and popery. And it was around Pendle Hill, a sombre ridge that looms over the intersecting pastures, meadows and moorland of the Ribble Valley, that their suspicions took infamous shape. The arraignment of the Lancashire witches in the assizes of Lancaster during 1612 is England’s most notorious witch-trial. In this remarkable and authoritative treatment, published to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the case of the Lancashire witches, Philip C Almond evokes all the fear, drama and paranoia of those volatile times: the bleak story of the storm over Pendle. 256 PAGES 216X135MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784537715 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $19.50 e ebook available

Belief in the supernatural, and in black magic, has been central to European cultural life for 3,000 years. ATHOS

The Holy Mountain Sydney Loch

Athos, the Holy Mountain of Greece, is one of the most mysterious places in the world. A rugged pyramid that rises up from the Aegean Sea, the mountain is wreathed in myth, legend and ancient traditions that, to this day, remain largely hidden from view. The heart of Athos started to beat at the dawn of Christianity and its community lays claim to being the oldest democracy in the world. An entirely autonomous region of the Hellenic Republic, it is home to twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries that cling to its rocky flanks. No women are allowed to set foot upon the peninsula and the monks who inhabit this isolated place still use the Julian calendar, living on ‘Byzantine Time’, where each day starts at sunset. While living in the mountain’s shadow, in Ouranopolis, Sydney Loch spent many years exploring Athos, and here he paints an enthralling portrait of the Holy Mountain. 288 PAGES 198 X 126MM MARCH 2017 9781784537999 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $19.00 TAURIS PARKE PAPERBACKS e ebook available

Witches, Poison Maids and Crones in the Art of Hans Baldung Grien Yvonne Owens Victoria College of Art in British Columbia

Offering new and provocative interpretations of Hans Baldung’s iconic witchcraft imagery, this book will be essential for historians of art, culture and gender relations in the late medieval and early modern periods. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2017 9781784537296 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 e ebook available

I.B.TAURIS SHORT HISTORIES I.B.Tauris Short Histories is an authoritatively written and elegantly presented new series that puts a fresh perspective on the way history is taught and understood in the twenty-first century. Designed to have strong appeal to university students and their teachers, as well as to general readers and history enthusiasts, I.B.Tauris Short Histories aims to bring informed interpretation, as well as factual reportage, to historical debate. Addressing key subjects and topics in the fields of history, the history of ideas, religion, classical studies, politics, philosophy and Middle East studies, the series seeks intentionally to move beyond the bland, neutral “introduction” that so often serves as the primary undergraduate teaching tool. Addressing a variety of subjects in a greater degree of depth than is often found in comparable series, yet at the same time in concise and compact handbook form, I.B.Tauris Short Histories aims to be “introductions with an edge.”

“Really stimulating: many of the published or planned works treat just the topics that I myself would be glad to read.”—Dexter Hoyos, University of Sydney “An attractive idea – the series looks great.”—Tim Blanning, University of Cambridge “An exciting and stimulating idea.”—Charlotte Roueché, King’s College London
