CONTENTS
Dear Reader, Welcome to our new catalogue featuring the books in Visual Culture launching through 2017. I.B. Tauris’ publishing in Visual Culture demonstrates our commitment to quality writing and cutting-edge scholarship on international cinema and media, contemporary art, photography and architecture, fashion, design, popular culture and cultural and media theory. Our books are designed to appeal to academics and students, researchers and professionals, as well as to general readers. Books for 2017 include a challenge to the status quo, with ‘Death of the Artist: Art World Dissidents and Their Alternative Identities’. ‘Tattoo’ is an art history of body art from sailors to kings; ‘Destruction Rites’ engages with visual culture postwar, and ‘New York, New Wave’ reveals the legacy of feminist artists in art practices today. In ‘There’s No Place Like Home’, Stephanie Hemelryk Donald studies the migrant child in cinema. Cecilia Mello explores ‘The Cinema of Jia Zhangke’ and ‘On Cinema’ presents the writings of the great Brazilian filmmaker and critic, Glauba Rocha. Experimental film is the subject of Sue Clayton and Laura Mulvey’s ‘Other Cinemas’. ‘Beyond the Bridge’ offers new thinking on Danish TV drama and ‘Dancing with the Doctor’ deconstructs gender across the Doctor Who universe. New in The Library of Gender & Popular Culture is ‘Positive Images’ – of gay men & HIV in contemporary culture. Books in Dress Cultures journey from ‘Fashion in Multiple Chinas’, through ‘Styling South Asian Youth Cultures’, to the nineteenth-century lived experience of ‘Fashion in European Art’. It is a pleasure to be working with all the writers featured in this catalogue, who are dedicated to developing fresh approaches and perspectives in the visual arts. We welcome new ideas and proposals across our publishing in Visual Culture.

FEMINISM AND ART HISTORY NOW NEW
Radical Critiques of Theory and Practice Victoria Horne and Lara Perry (Eds) Paul Mellon Centre for British Art and University of Brighton
Four decades of feminist art history have prompted a radical rethinking of the discipline. This volume asks how feminism’s interventions and propositions are relevant to contemporary scholarship today. To what extent have developments in global politics, artworld institutions, and local cultures reshaped the critical directions of feminist art historians? Taking on subjects that reflect the museological, global and materialist trajectories of twenty-first-century art historical scholarship, the chapters address the themes of Invisibility, Temporality, Spatiality and Storytelling. They present new research on a diversity of topics that span political movements in Italy, urban gentrification in New York, community art projects in Scotland and Canada’s contemporary indigenous culture. 288 PAGES 216 X 138 MM JUNE 2017 9781784533250 HARDBACK £64 / $99 e ebook available
THE PARTICIPATOR IN CONTEMPORARY ART NEW For centuries, the artist’s biography has been central to our understanding of art. The single signature work is the most valuable in the art market and it can be simpler and more convenient to research and insert a singular author into linear histories of art. In Death of the Artist, Nicola McCartney diverts our attention to those cutting-edge contemporary artists who have chosen to challenge the status quo by experimenting with collective practice, pseudonyms and anonymity. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 2017 9781784534158 PAPERBACK £17.99 / $35 9781784534141 HARDBACK £64 / $99 e ebook available

ENCOUNTERS BEYOND THE GALLERY
Relational Aesthetics and Cultural Difference Renate Dohmen
Encounters Beyond the Gallery challenges the terms of their exclusion, looking to relational art, Deleuze-Guattarean aesthetics and notions of perception, as well as anthropological theory for ways to create connections between seemingly disparate worlds. Embracing a unique and experimental format, the book imagines encounters between the art works and art worlds of Rirkrit Tiravanija, Tamil women, the ShipiboConibo of Eastern Peru and a fictional female contemporary artist named Rikki T, in order to rethink normative aesthetic and cultural categories. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2016 9781780763712 HARDBACK £64 / $99 INT. DIGITAL ART

A History Nicholas Lambert
Rain machines; alarmed kosher pickle jars filled with gemstones; replica cornflakes boxes; ‘disco décor’; time capsules; art bombs; birthday presents; museum interventions; collected and curated projects; holograms. This is a book about the vast array of sculptural work made by Andy Warhol between 1954 and 1987, a period that begins long before the first Pop paintings and ends in the year of his death. In 3D Warhol, Thomas Morgan Evans demonstrates that Warhol’s engagement with sculpture and its traditional notions produced ‘trespasses’, bisecting across the expectations, allegiances and values within art historical, and ultimately, social, sites of investiture - or territories. This groundbreaking, original book brings to the forefront a major, but overlooked aspect of Warhol’s oeuvre and provides an essential new perspective on the artist’s legacy. 224 PAGES 216 X 138MM FEBRUARY 2017 9781784534271 HARDBACK £64 / $99 9781784534288 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $24.95 INT. FASCIST MODERNISM What is the story of digital art? Tracing the medium from its roots in constructivist and futurist fantasies to today’s complex virtual realities, Nicholas Lambert has written the first rigorous art historical account of digital art’s evolution since 1945. Unlike so many artistic dwevelopments, digital art has never belonged to a single and canonical movement; its genesis reflects a multiplicity of philosophical viewpoints and technological discoveries. The book chronicles the major artists, exhibitions and institutions key to the medium’s story. 336 PAGES 234 X 156MM MAY 2018 9781848858589 HARDBACK £69 / $110 9781848858596 PAPERBACK £18.99 / $32 e ebook available

FEMINISM AND ART IN POSTWAR ITALY NEW
The Legacy of Carla Lonzi Francesco Ventrella and Giovanna Zapperi A renowned art critic of the 1960s, Carla Lonzi abandoned the art world in 1970 to found Rivolta Femminile, a pioneering feminist collective in Italy. Rather than separating the art world luminary from the activist, however, this book looks at the two together. It demonstrates that even as Lonzi refused art, she articulated how feminist spaces and communities drew strength from creativity. The authors document the artistic and feminist circles of postwar Italy, a time characterised both by radical protest and avant-garde aesthetics, using primary and archival sources never before translated into English. 304 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2017 9781784537326 HARDBACK £62 / $99 e ebook available

MOLLA NASREDDIN
Polemics, Caricatures & Satires Slavs and Tatars NEW
Sigmund Freud spent the final year of his life at 20 Maresfield Gardens, London, surrounded by all his possessions, in exile from the Nazis. The long-term home and workspace he left behind in Vienna is a seemingly empty space, devoid of the great psychoanalyst’s objects and artefacts. Now museums, both of these spaces resonate powerfully. Since 1989, the Freud Museum London has held over 70 exhibitions by a distinctive range of artists. The Sigmund Freud Museum Vienna houses a small but impressive contemporary art collection. In this remarkable book, Joanne Morra offers a nuanced analysis of these historical museums and their unique relationships to contemporary art. Taking us on a journey through enlivening contemporary artworks, exhibitions and curatorial practices that intervene in the objects, spaces, and memories of these Museums, Morra guides us through a fresh experience of the history and practice of psychoanalysis, of museums, and contemporary art. On the way we confront the archaeological impulse within psychoanalysis, the dreams, delusions and voyages of the unconscious, the trauma of exile, migration and post-memory, and the irresistible need we have to perform acts of love or hate within the Freud Museums. 288 PAGES 216 X 138MM FEBRUARY 2017 9781780762067 HARBACK £69 / $110 9781780762074 PAPERBACK £17.99 / $30 INT. ANTIPOLITICS IN CENTRAL EUROPEAN ART Published between 1906 and 1930, Molla Nasreddin was a satirical Azeri periodical edited by Jalil Mammadguluzadeh and named after the legendary Sufi wise man-cum-fool of the Middle Ages (who reputedly lived in the thirteenth century in the Ottoman Empire). Slavs and Tatars, a leading art collective focusing on Eurasia, has brought together this collection of sketches, caricatures and satirical writings from Molla Nasreddin, in the process revealing an unusual manifestation of nationalism in the Caucasus and its surrounding regions. 208 PAGES 280X240MM FEBRUARY 2017 9781784535483 HARDBACK £35 / $49 e ebook available

CENTRAL ASIA IN ART
From Soviet Orientalism to the New Republics Aliya Abykayeva-Tiesenhausen In the midst of the space race and nuclear age, Soviet Realist artists were producing figurative oil paintings. Why? How was art produced to control and co-opt the peripheries of the Soviet Union, particularly Central Asia? Presenting the ‘untold story’ of Soviet Orientalism, Aliya Abykayeva-Tiesenhausen re-evaluates the imperial project of the Soviet state, placing the Orientalist undercurrent found within art and propaganda production in the USSR alongside the creation of new art forms in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. 304 PAGES 246 X 189MM JUNE 2016 9781784533526 HARDBACK £35 / $50 e ebook available

Cultural Politics in the Making of Black Britain Eddie Chambers
Destruction Rites explores the ephemeral visual culture of destruction in the postwar era and its links to contemporary art. It examines the demolition derby; games and toys based on warfare; playgrounds situated in bomb sites; and the rise of garage sales, where goods designed for obsolescence and destined for the garbage heap are reclaimed and repurposed by local communities. Mona Hadler exposes how the 1960s saw destruction, construction and the everyday collide as never before.
University of Texas How did a distinct and powerful Black British identity emerge? This new book chronicles the extraordinary blend of social, political and cultural influences from the mid1950s to late 1970s that gave rise to new heights of Black-British artistic expression in the 1980s. Eddie Chambers relates how and why during these decades “West Indians” became ‘Afro-Caribbeans,’ and how in turn ‘Afro-Caribbeans’ became ‘Black British’ – and the centrality of the arts to this important narrative. The British Empire, migration, Rastafari, the Anti-Apartheid struggle, reggae music, dub poetry, the ascendance of the West Indies cricket team and the coming of Margaret Thatcher – all of these factors, and others, have had a part to play in the compelling story of how the African Diaspora transformed itself to give rise to Black Britain.

ART AND THE POLITICS OF VISIBILITY
Contesting the Global, Local and the InBetween Zeena Feldman (Ed), City University London In an era of unprecedented global mobility, artists face unique challenges. How does cultural context affect the interpretation of art? What makes artists’ work transnational or national in character, and how will their visibility be impacted by either label? This book questions these dynamics, asking how the dissemination of visual culture on a global scale affects art and its institutions. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781780769066 HARDBACK £59 / $95 INT. The extant works of the tragedians Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripedes have served as a benchmark for stagings and interpretations of tragedy as an evolving genre; while the impact of the Hellenistic comedic writer Menander on future Roman works by Plautus and Terence signalled only the beginning of a legacy of dramatic art that has shaped theatrical and operatic productions to this day. 160 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2017 9781848851009 HARDBACK £59 / $95 ANCIENTS AND MODERNS e ebook available

Art and Critical Theory
DRAWING IN In recent years, ‘thinking though drawing’ has become a ubiquitous trope – not only in the arts, but in the sciences and humanities too. This affords an exciting
opportunity for sustained intellectual dialogues to emerge within, between and without traditional disciplinary boundaries. Drawing In provides a space where new perspectives and critical approaches in drawing can be brought together and explored. This innovative series includes books for general readers, scholarly monographs and edited anthologies – which emerge from the diverse fields of art and design history and theory, fine art, design, drawing pedagogy, technology, geography, science, engineering and even medicine. Some are practice-led and driven by creative textual strategies that move beyond the page; all contribute original perspectives on how drawing facilitates and manifests the production, acquisition and understanding of knowledge. CONTEMPORARY THINKERS REFRAMED Are you baffled by Baudrillard? Dazed by Deleuze? Confused by Kristeva? Other guides can feel as impenetrable as the original texts to those who ‘think in images’. Contemporary Thinkers Reframed instead uses the language of the arts to explore the usefulness in practice of complex ideas. Short, contemporary and accessible, these lively books utilize actual examples of artworks, films, television shows, works of architecture, fashion and even computer games to explain and explore the work of the most commonly taught thinkers. Conceived specifically for the visually minded, the series will prove invaluable to students right across the visual arts.

Art and Critical Theory Art and… is a series of intelligently written and highly readable illustrated books for the gallery-goer and student. The series takes as its starting points both that art matters – that it has a real and important connection to the world in which we live – and that contemporary art, sometimes difficult or unapproachable, need not equate to difficult writing. In selecting themes, we have aligned art with those perennial issues such as sex and war which trouble generation after generation, as well as those specifically contemporary issues – recent scientific advances and advertising for example – to show how art both reflects and influences the wider world.

Art and Critical Theory NEW ENCOUNTERS: ARTS, CULTURES, CONCEPTS Series Editor: Griselda Pollock Professor of Social and Critical Histories of Art and Director of the Centre for Cultural Analysis, Theory and History, University of Leeds. After theory: do we abandon ‘the theoretical turn’, or do we work with it differently? The New Encounters series brings together major international commentators and also introduces a new generation of thinkers. Resisting both the rejection of theory and the current displacement of art history in favour of visual culture, New Encounters instead rejuvenates both approaches. Marked out by their critical engagement with and close informed readings of images, texts and cultural events, these books employ fresh feminist, postcolonial and queer perspectives. New Encounters also showcases exciting new volumes which revisit key figures in twentieth century art through highly original feminist approaches.
CONCENTRATIONARY IMAGINARIES Tracing Totalitarian Violence in Popular Culture Griselda Pollock and Max Silverman (Eds)
Both at University of Leeds In 1945, French political prisoners returning from the concentration camps of Germany coined the phrase ‘the concentrationary universe’ to describe the camps as a terrible political experiment in the destruction of the human. This book shows how the unacknowledged legacy of a totalitarian mentality has seeped into the deepest recesses of everyday popular culture. It asks if the concentrationary now infests our cultural imaginary, normalizing what was once considered horrific and exceptional by transforming into entertainment violations of human life. Drawing on the political philosophy of Hannah Arendt and the analyses of violence by Agamben,Virilio, Lacoue-Labarthe and Nancy, it also offers close readings of films by Cavani and Haneke that identify and critically expose such an imaginary and, hence, contest its lingering force. 320 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2015 9781784534097 HARDBACK £69 / $110 NEW ENCOUNTERS: ARTS, CULTURES, CONCEPTS

Ben Campkin, UCL Urban Laboratory & Bartlett School of Architecture; Ger Duijzings, University of London
How can we understand the variety and dynamism of contemporary cities and urban experience across the globe? Engaged Urbanism showcases the exciting ways in which urbanists are responding to this question and working towards fairer cities. Its authors offer succinct, candid and carefully illustrated commentaries on the trials and successes of risk-taking research, revealing how they collaborate across fields of expertise, inventing or adapting methods to suit bespoke situations. Featuring novel uses and combinations of practice – from activism, architectural design and undercover journalism, to film, sculpture, performance and photography – in a diversity of cities such as Beirut, Johannesburg and Rio de Janeiro. 304 PAGES 230X172MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784534592 PAPERBACK £25 / $39.50 e ebook available
THE DEAD CITY
This is the first examination of the religious imaginary of the metropolis through the prism of the visual arts. Adopting a broad multicultural and multi-faith perspective, and making space for practitioners as well as scholars, its topics range from ancient archaeological remains and Victorian murals and cemeteries to contemporary documentaries and political cartoons. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784536619 HARDBACK £69 / $110 e ebook available

FASHION AND POPULAR PRINT IN EARLY MODERN ENGLAND Depicting Dress in Black-Letter Ballads Clare Backhouse
Courtauld Institue of Art Fashion featured in black-letter broadside ballads over a hundred years before fashion magazines appeared in England. Dress was a popular subject for ballads, as well as being a commodity with close material and cultural connections to them. This book analyses how the distinctive words and images of these ballads made meaning, both in relation to each other on the ballad sheet and in response to contemporary national events, sumptuary legislation, religious practice, economic theory, the visual arts and literature. 240 PAGES 234 X 156MM JUNE 2017 9781784538378 HARDBACK £58 / $94 e ebook available

Imagined Identities in Iranian Film Hossein Khosrowjah,
University of Manchester Cinema is fertile ground for the production of cosmopolitan ideals. Films are produced, reviewed and consumed worldwide, often circulating between cultural contexts. The book explores cosmopolitanism and its debates through the lens of East Asian cinemas from Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Singapore, throwing doubt on the validity of national cinemas and definitive cultural boundaries. Chapters explore the multilingualism of Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express (1994) in relation to varying shades of audience comprehension, Ming Wong’s screen performance art that highlight attitudes to ‘otherness’ and the arcane process of selection for the Best Foreign Film Oscar.

TAINTED LOVE Screening Sexual Perversion NEW
Darren Kerr and Donna Peberdy (Eds) Both at Southampton Solent University
This timely collection brings together leading scholars who draw on a variety of critical approaches including adaptation, performance, cultural studies, queer theory, feminism and philosophy to examine screen representations of controversial sexualities from the weird and wonderful to the debased and debauched. Chapters explore the shame of masturbation in mainstream cinema, teenage sexuality in the films of Larry Clark, intergenerational sex and incestuous relations in French cinema, sexual obsession in gay cinema, ‘everyday’ perversion in neoliberal culture, the straightness of necrophilia, imaging and re-imagining the Marquis de Sade from film to slash fiction and the performance and presentation of the paedophile. In order to move past binary distinctions of good and bad, normal and abnormal, moral and immoral, Tainted Love seeks to critically interrogate perverse sexualities and sexual perversities on screen. 304 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 2017 9781780761954 HARDBACK £69 / $110

ANIMATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST NEW
Practice and Aesthetics from Baghdad to Casablanca Stefanie Van de Peer (Ed), University of Stirling, Scotland
Donald Richie was the first and most influential champion of Japanese cinema for American audiences. In his thoughtful and unpretentious writing style, he introduced a generation to the Golden Age films of masters like Akira Kurosawa and Yasujiro Ozu. An expatriate in Japan from the age of 23, he published over forty books and dozens of essays spanning art criticism, historical fiction and travelogues like the canonical The Inland Sea. Viewing Film is a landmark publication: the first collection of Richie’s writings on cinema from beyond Japan. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 2017 9781848851771 PAPERBACK £16.99 / $29.50 TAURIS WORLD CINEMA SERIES e ebook available
The internationally acclaimed films Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir only hinted at the vibrant animation culture that exists within the Middle East and North Africa. In spite of censorship, oppression and war, animation studios have thrived in recent years, giving rise to a whole new generation of entrepreneurs and artists. The success of animation in the Middle East is in part a product of a changing cultural climate, which is increasingly calling for art that reflects politics. Equally, the professionalization and popularization of film festivals and the emergence of animation studios and private initiatives are the results of a growing consumer culture, in which family-friendly entertainment is big business. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM JANUARY 2017 9781784533267 HARDBACK £64 / $99 TAURIS WORLD CINEMA SERIES e ebook available

A Cinema of Girlhood
Fiona Handyside
In this remarkable and original book, Sean Redmond examines ‘post-human’ narratives - featuring genetic engineering and cloning, surveillance and data mining, space and time travel, artificial intelligence, online dating cultures and visions of catastrophe, they portray a world in which the material, and the stable, are being lost to the ever-more volatile and ephemeral idea of ‘liquid space’. 224 PAGES 234 X 156MM JANUARY 2017 9781780761879 PAPERBACK £16.99 / $28 e ebook available
DRONE AGE CINEMA
Action Film and Sensory Assault Steen Ledet Christiansen
Sofia Coppola is widely regarded as one of the most astute, provocative and visionary directors in the contemporary film industry. She has received numerous accolades and in 2004 became the first ever American woman to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar. Fiona Handyside here considers the careful counter-balance of vulnerability with the possibilities and pleasures of being female in Coppola’s films – albeit for the white and the privileged – through their recurrent themes of girlhood, fame, power, sex and celebrity. In this original study, Handyside brings critical attention to a rare female auteur and in so doing contributes to important analyses of post-feminism, authorship in film, and the growing field of girlhood studies. 224 PAGES 234 X 156MM JANUARY 2017 9781784537142 HARDBACK £59.50 / $95 9781784537159 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $25 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE e ebook available

Woman as Performer in Early Russian Cinema NEW

Rachel Morley
University College London Oriental dancers, ballerinas, actresses and opera singers - the figure of the female performer is ubiquitous in the cinema of pre-Revolutionary Russia. From the first feature film, Romashkov’s Stenka Razin (1908), through the sophisticated melodramas of the 1910s, to Viskovsky’s The Last Tango (1918), made shortly before the pre-Revolutionary film industry was dismantled by the new Soviet government, the female performer remains central. In this groundbreaking new study, Rachel Morley argues that early Russian film-makers used the character of the female performer to explore key contemporary concerns from changing conceptions of femininity and the emergence of the so-called New Woman, to broader questions concerning gender identity.
This book examines the non-fictional representations of Soviet borderlands from the Far North to the Northern Caucasus and Central Asia between 1925-1940. Beginning with Dziga Vertov and his vision of the Soviet space as a unified, multinational mosaic, Oksana Sarkisova rediscovers films by filmmakers who helped construct an image of Soviet ethnic diversity and left behind a lasting visual legacy. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784535735 HARDBACK £64 / $99 KINO - THE RUSSIAN AND SOVIET CINEMA SERIES e ebook available

British television changed radically in the new millennium. The influence of American ‘quality’ drama series such as The Sopranos, 24, Six Feet Under, Lost, Desperate Housewives and Mad Men – characterised by high production values, a glossy visual style and fast-paced elliptical editing – prompted a fresh generation in programming across the pond. This book analyses these changes in British television drama production and style since 2000. 232 PAGES 234 X 156 MM OCTOBER 2017 9781780765228 HARDBACK £59 / $95 9781780765235 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $29 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE e ebook available

The era of globalisation has blurred national and international television cultures and promoted regular cross-fertilisation between film and television industries. Important questions have emerged from this context surrounding, for example, the ‘Americanisation‘ of foreign television formats, the meaning and practice behind the term ‘quality television‘, and the purpose and efficacy of public service broadcasting. Drawing on popular motifs from these celebrated dramas such as foreign politics, organised crime, global warming, and the impact of multinational corporations, this timely book provides crucial insight into the Danish dramas at the forefront of sophisticated, forward-thinking, fictional television. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM JANUARY 2017 9781784533564 HARDBACK £69 / $110 e ebook available
SHERLOCK
NEW
Detecting Quality Television Matt Hills The phrase ‘cultural phenomenon’ is sometimes over-used, but its relevance to the TV series Sherlock is undeniable. Few shows have been the subject of discussion between the UK’s Prime Minister and Chinese fans; few have found such a devoted fanbase almost overnight; and few have attracted hordes of viewers to watch their location filming. This is the first book to explore the hit series in relation to adaptation studies, TV aesthetics and stardom. It also delves into industry, audience and academic discussions of ‘quality’ TV, approaching ‘quality’ as a combination of emotional investments and genre-like classifications. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2017 9781784533540 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $25 e ebook available

SPECTACULAR TELEVISION The cyborg – an organic body augmented with technology – is an enduring figure that can be found across science fiction stories, novels, films, and, more recently, television. What can its marked presence in cult TV shows tell us about the rapidly changing world we live in, and indeed about the human condition? This book explores how the image of the cyborg attracts our fears and fascinations. These bionic creations encourage us, as viewers, to think about our interactions with technology in an age of immediacy and surveillance, reassess our own corporeal experiences, and re-imagine gender binaries and racial differences. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536480 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $22.50 e ebook available

In this book, Patricia Pender argues that Buffy includes diverse elements of feminism and reconfigures – and sometimes revises – the ideals of American second wave feminism for a wide third wave audience. She also explores the ways in which the final season’s vision of collective feminist activism negotiates racial and class boundaries. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2016 9781780767451 HARDBACK £59 / $95 9781780767468 PAPERBACK £16.99 / $28 INVESTIGATING CULT TV SERIES e ebook available
Time and television have a unique and multi-faceted relationship. Focusing on the cult genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror, the book draws examples from among the most beloved television programmes of recent decades including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek:The Next Generation and Dr.Who to explore the diverse uses and representations of time. Using academic approaches from cultural studies, literary analysis, psychoanalytic theory and philosophy, this book lends a deeper understanding of television as a contemporary narrative medium. 192 PAGES 216 X 134MM MARCH 2016 9781784530136 HARDBACK £59 / $95 INVESTIGATING CULT TV SERIES e ebook available
SOUNDS OF FEAR AND WONDER Music In Cult TV Janet K. Halfyard, Birmingham Conservatoire
How does music enrich and define cult television series? The book analyses theme tunes and scoring on television to reveal how composers construct a series’ identity using musical idioms and instruments. Characters and plot developments, similarly, are enhanced by their musical accompaniment. The different scoring strategies employed in science fiction and horror-based genres, comprising for example Star Trek or Dr. Who, are considered alongside cult shows set in our reality, such as Dexter, The Sopranos and Queer as Folk.

David Bowie Across the Universe Will Brooker
If the Middle Ages form the present-day backdrop to the continents of Westeros and Essos, then antiquity is their resonant past. The Known World is haunted by the remnants of distant and powerful civilizations, without whose presence the novels of George R R Martin and the ever popular HBO show would lose much of their meaning and appeal. In this essential sequel to Carolyne Larrington’s Winter is Coming: The Medieval World of Game of Thrones, Ayelet Haimson Lushkov explores the echoes, from the Summer Islands to Storm’s End, of a rich antique history. 272 PAGES 198X129MM APRIL 2017 9781784536992 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $15.95 e ebook available
CYBORG THEOLOGY
Kingston University, London Most of the many books about David Bowie track his artistic ‘changes’ chronologically throughout his career. This book, uniquely, examines Bowie’s ‘sameness’: his recurring themes, images, motifs and concepts as an artist, across all his creative work, from lyrics and music through to costumes, storyboards, films, plays and painting. To be published on Bowie’s 70th birthday, Forever Stardust looks at Bowie’s work not as a linear evolution through calendar time, to his tragic death in January 2016, but as a matrix, a dialogue, a network of ideas that echo back and forth across the five decades of his career, interacting with each other and with the surrounding culture. It explores Bowie’s creative output as a whole, tracing the repetitions and obsessions that structure his work, discovering what they tell us about Bowie in all his forms, from Ziggy Stardust to David Jones. 256 PAGES 216X138MM JANUARY 2017 9781784531423 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $17.99 e ebook available

The Visual Politics of Race, Gender and Space Soraya Murray
Humans, Technology and God Scott A Midson
University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) Video games are a defining part of mass visual culture. Today over half of all American households own a dedicated game console and gaming industry profits trump those of the film industry worldwide. In this book, Soraya Murray moves past the technical discussions of games and offers a fresh and incisive look at their cultural dimensions. She critically explores blockbusters likeThe Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid, Spec Ops: The Line, Tomb Raider and Assassin’s Creed to show how they are deeply entangled with American ideological positions and contemporary political, cultural and economic conflicts.

Popular Culture From Mad Men to gaming culture, performance art to steam-punk fashion, the presentation and representation of gender continues to saturate popular media. This new series seeks to explore the intersection of gender and popular culture engaging with a variety of texts – drawn primarily from art, fashion TV, cinema, cultural studies and media studies – as a way of considering various models for understanding the complementary relationship between ‘gender identities’ and ‘popular culture’. By considering race, ethnicity, class, and sexual identities across a range of cultural forms, each book in the series will adopt a critical stance towards issues surrounding the development of gender identities and popular and mass cultural ‘products’. For further information or enquiries please contact the library series editors: Claire Nally: claire.nally@northumbria.ac.uk and Professor Angela Smith: angela.smith@sunderland.

QUEER HORROR FILM AND TELEVISION
Sexuality and Masculinity at the Margins Darren Elliott-Smith, University of Hertfordshire In recent years, the representation of alternative sexuality in the horror film and television has ‘outed’ itself from the shadows from which it once lurked via the embrace of an outrageously queer horror aesthetic where homosexuality is often unequivocally referenced. In titling this sub-genre ‘queer horror’, Elliott-Smith designates horror that is crafted by male directors/producers who self-identify as gay, bi, queer or transgendered and whose work features homoerotic, or explicitly homosexual, narratives with ‘out’ gay characters. 272 PAGES 216 X 138MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784536862 HARDBACK £58 / $94 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE e ebook available

Gay Men and HIV/ AIDS in the Popular Culture of ‘Post Crisis’

A tidal wave of panic surrounded homosexuality and AIDS in the 1980s and early ‘90s, the period commonly called ‘The AIDS Crisis’. With the advent of antiretroviral drugs in the mid ‘90s, however, the meaning of an HIV diagnosis radically changed. These game-changing drugs now enable many people living with HIV to lead a healthy, regular life, but how has this dramatic shift impacted the representation of gay men and HIV in popular culture? Positive Images is the first detailed examination of how the relationship between gay men and HIV has transformed in the past two decades. From Queer as Folk to Chemsex,The Line of Beauty to The Normal Heart, Dion Kagan examines literature, film, TV, documentaries and news coverage from across the English-speaking world. 272 PAGES 216 X 138MM APRIL 2017 9781784534196 HARDBACK £64 / $99 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE

A powerful female, preadolescent, consumer demographic has emerged in tandem with girls becoming more visible in popular culture since the 1990s. Yet the cultural anxiety that this has caused has received scant academic attention. In Tweenhood, Melanie Kennedy rectifies this and examines mainstream, pre-adolescent girls’ films, television programmes and celebrities, highlighting the deification of celebrity and femininity within its culture. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM JULY 2017 9781780768427 HARDBACK £64 / $99 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE e ebook available

International Media THE NEWS MEDIA AT WAR
The Clash of Western and Arab Networks in the Middle East Tarek Cherkaoui During the 2003 War in Iraq, American news media found it difficult to convey their pro-war perspective outside the United States. Since the war was unpopular in many parts of the world, failure to win hearts and minds - particularly in the Middle East - represented a significant setback for the American soft power. This book explores what happened. It examines the cross-cultural factors that made American television networks cover the war very differently from their Arab counterparts.

This book looks at the implications of this decision for free expression, journalism and information in the digital public sphere. University of Westminster Children, defined internationally as under-18s, account for some 40 per cent of Arab populations and the proportion of under-fives is correspondingly large. Yet studies of children’s media and child audiences in the region are as scarce as truly popular locally produced media content aimed at children. At the very time when conflict and uncertainty in key Arab countries have made local development and diversification of children’s media more remote, it has become more urgent to gain a better understanding of how the next generation’s identities and worldviews are formed. 288 PAGES 216 X 134 MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784535056 PAPERBACK £17.99 / $29 9781784535049 HARDBACK £64 / $99 e ebook available

The Role of Al Jazeera English
‘Occidentalisms in the Arab World’ not only presents a comprehensive overview and pointed commentary on recent works in the emerging field of Occidentalist studies, but also provides new insight on the interplay between ideology and image in the formulation of ‘the West’. Robbert Woltering provides an in-depth look at the ways in which multiple representations of the West have developed in Egypt since the end of the Cold War.
