A New History of the Anglo-Saxon World NEW

Mark Atherton University of Oxford During the tenth century, England began to emerge as a distinct country with an identity that was both part of yet separate from ‘Christendom’. Mark Atherton here shows how the stories, legends, biographies and chronicles of AngloSaxon England reflected both this exciting time of innovation as well as the myriad lives, loves and hates of the people who wrote them. He demonstrates, too, that this was a nation coming of age, ahead of its time in its use not of the Book-Latin used elsewhere in Europe, but of a narrative Old English prose devised for law and practical governance of the nation-state, for prayer and preaching, and above all for exploring a rich and daring new literature. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784530051 HARDBACK £69.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF MEDIEVAL STUDIES e ebook available

THE RISE AND FALL OF OWAIN GLYNDWR

NEW

England, France and Welsh Rebellion in the Middle Ages Gideon Brough University of Cardiff

Owain Glyndwr is a towering figure in Welsh history. He led the Welsh Revolt and the last war of Welsh independence, defeated Henry IV’s army, opposed the legendary Henry ‘Hotspur’ Percy – and bore the title ‘Prince of Wales’. He held court at Harlech and envisioned an independent Welsh state and church. Yet Glyndwr’s success was short-lived – his ultimate defeat at the hands of the English saw the final abandonment of the Welsh cause by France and his own disappearance into an unmarked grave. Gideon Brough here provides a new biography of this iconic man – as military leader, diplomat, medieval statesman and staunch Welsh nationalist. 352 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784535933 HARDBACK £25.00 / $40.00 e ebook available

MAPPING FRONTIERS ACROSS MEDIEVAL ISLAM

Geography, Translation and the ‘Abbasid Empire NEW IN PAPERBACK Travis Zadeh, Yale University Travis Zadeh traces the conceptualisation of frontiers within early ‘Abbasid society and re-evaluates the modern treatment of marvels and monsters inhabiting medieval Islamic descriptions of the world. Examining the roles of translation, descriptive geography, and salvation history in the projection of early Abbasid imperial power, he presents a compelling study of medieval geography, from myth to map.

De la Brocquière’s travels as a spy across the fifteenth-century Middle East have left us with vivid records. CROMWELL AT WAR The Lord General and his Military Revolution NEW Martyn Bennett Nottingham Trent University

In the second half of the twentieth century, Germany became the dominant political and economic power in Europe – and in the EU. Yet Germany’s leadership of the EU is geared principally to the defence of German national interests. Germany exercises power in order to protect the German economy and to enable it to play an influential role in the wider world. Beyond that there is no underlying vision or purpose. In this book, former British ambassador to Germany Paul Lever shows how Germany’s history has influenced its current economic and social development and provides important perspectives on Germany’s future political and cultural growth, especially in the context of the 2015 refugee crisis which saw over one million refugees offered a home in Germany. 288 PAGES 216X135MM MARCH 2017 9781784539290 HARDBACK £17.99 / $30.00 e ebook available

THE NAPOLEONIC MEDITERRANEAN Oliver Cromwell was not only a key political figure of early modern England, but a seasoned military leader. Martyn Bennett provides the first biography of Cromwell in the context of the seventeenth century Military Revolution. Bennett analyses Cromwell’s military talents and generalship, in addition to his brutal discipline and religious fervour, examining the controversial Irish campaigns as well as modern accusations of genocide. 304 PAGES 228X155MM APRIL 2017 9781784535117 HARDBACK £25.00 / $39.00 e ebook available

SICILY AND THE ENLIGHTENMENT

NEW

The World of Domenico Caracciolo, Thinker and Reformer Angus Campbell Dominico Caracciolo was a diplomat, viceroy, and prime minister in the Two Sicilies. His letters paint a detailed picture of the eighteenth-century European elite and the Enlightenment struggle against the increasingly outdated clerical and feudal rule in Sicily. Angus Campbell provides a detailed portrait of Caracciolo and his context. In doing so, he offers a unique vantage point on the European diplomatic culture of the eighteenth century.

Yvonne Owens reads the paintings of Hans Baldung Grien against the humanist intellectual milieu of Renaissance Germany, showing how his work issued from – and contributed to – the contemporary understanding of witchcraft as a heresy.

Visions of a City Edward Chaney (Ed)

Heroism and National Identity Huw Lewis Jones

The image of exploration in the nineteenth century was laden with multiple meanings, and sustained by a rapidly expanding visual culture. Exploration was theatre, a spectacular peacetime engagement, and its representation a series of performances: the idea of whether an expedition was successful or not depended as much upon what was imagined to have happened as what actually occurred. Huw Lewis-Jones’s engaging work explores the making of such polar heroes, describing how and why a cult of polar exploration developed.

The early twentieth century witnessed the violent erasure of the Armenians from their historic homeland, and the Dildilian family was intimately involved in the triumphs and tragedies of these years. YOUNG LOTHAR

An Underground Fugitive in Nazi Berlin Larry Orbach

Lothar Orbach, the youngest son of a German Jewish family, was just 14 when the Nazis began rounding up Berlin’s Jews. His promising education was aborted; his closeknit family splintered. Escaping with false papers, his mother led her son into sanctuary with a family of communists, and Orbach – under the assumed identity of Gerhard Peters – entered Berlin’s underworld of ‘divers’. He scraped a living by hustling pool, cheating in poker and stealing. Outwardly he became a cagey, amoral street thug; inwardly he was a sensitive, romantic boy, devoted son and increasingly religious Jew, clinging to his humanity. In the end, he was betrayed and sent to Auschwitz, on the last transport, in 1944. This singular coming of age story of life in the Berlin underground during WWII is a story of hope, even happiness, in the very heart of darkness. 384 PAGES 216X135MM JANUARY 2017 9781784537630 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 e ebook available

Transforming the Everyday from WWII to the Fall of the Berlin Wall Roman Krakovsky, University of Geneva Many aspects of the post-war socialist utopian project – such as fast-paced industrialisation, collectivisation and urbanisation – are well known. Yet the regimes of central and Eastern Europe further sought to transform the ways in which their citizens interacted with each other and the world around them. Roman Krakovský here considers the Czechoslovakian attempt to ‘reinvent the world’. 352 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 2017 9781784539146 HARDBACK £68.00 / $110.00 e ebook available

JEWS, NAZIS AND THE CINEMA OF HUNGARY NEW

The Tragedy of Success, 1929-1944 David Frey

United States Military Academy, Westpoint

Art historians often frame latesocialist Central European art as either ‘totalitarian’ or ‘transitional’. This book challenges the established viewpoint, contending that the artists of this era cannot be caricatured as dissident heroes, or easily subsumed into the formalist Western canon. It offers an account of the ways in which artists in Central Europe embraced alternative forms of practice just as their dissident counterparts were also formulating alternative models of politics. In doing so, she makes a case for the moral and political coherence of Central European art, theory and oppositional activism in the late-socialist period, arguing for the region’s centrality to late-20th century intellectual and cultural history. 360 PAGES 234 X 156 AUGUST 2016 9781784533144 PAPERBACK £25.00 / $45.00

THE ECONOMIC STRUGGLE FOR POWER IN TITO’S YUGOSLAVIA

THE RIVIERA AT WAR

NEW

World War II on the Cote de Azur George Kundahl During World War II three distinct forces opposed the Allies, and southeastern France experienced domination by more than one of these enemies. Not only did inhabitants suffer through Italian Fascism and German Nazism but also under the rule of Vichy France. The reality of World War II burst onto the Riviera in June 1940 when the region had to defend itself against the Italian army and ended in April 1945 with a battle against German and Italian forces. George G. Kundahl tells the full story of World War II on the French Riviera, featuring previously unseen sources and photos.

THE IDEA OF RUSSIA

NEW

The Life and Work of Dmitry Likhachev Vladislav Zubok, London School of Economics Dmitry Likhachev (1906-1999) was one of the most prominent Russian intellectuals of the twentieth century. His life spanned virtually the entire century – a tumultuous period which saw Russia move from Tsarist rule under Nicholas II via the Russian Revolution and Civil War into seven decades of communism followed by Gorbachev’s Perestroika and the rise of Putin. In this, the first biography of Likhachev to appear in English, Vladislav Zubok provides a thoroughly researched account of one of Russia’s most extraordinary and influential public figures.

Peter De Simone shows the Old Believers as versatile and opportunistic, and demonstrates that they actively engaged with, and even challenged, the very notion of the spiritual and ideological place of Moscow in Imperial Russia. 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2017 9781784538927 HARDBACK £59.00 / $95.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN RUSSIAN HISTORY e ebook available

A few years before he died, James MacGibbon confessed to his close family that he had spied for the Soviet Union during World War II. At the end of the war MI5 had suspected him of espionage and interrogated him, keeping James, his wife Jean, and their young family under close surveillance for a number of years, and regularly intercepting their private communications. Only after James’s death did the true significance of what he might have revealed become clear – in his wartime office role, James had access to the plans for Operation Overlord, D-Day. In this book, James’s son Hamish tells the story of his parents, their interaction with the communist party and their flirtation with wartime espionage. It is a unique portrait of two very ordinary people caught up in the extraordinary events of World War II and the Cold War. 288 PAGES 226X155MM MAY 2017 9781784537739 HARDBACK £20.00 / $29.00 e ebook available

WHY COLD WAR AGAIN?

NEW

How America Lost Post-Soviet Russia Stephen F. Cohen, New York University As Russia and America face off in a renewed East-West conflict, played out in Ukraine and the Middle East, time may be running out for a negotiated resolution. Stephen F. Cohen traces the history of this East-West relationship in the ‘Inter Cold War’ period – the years from the purported end of the preceding Cold War, in 1990-1991, to what he argues could be a new and even more dangerous Cold War. Cohen’s historical and contemporary analysis is insightful, thoughtprovoking and essential reading for anyone seeking to understand relations between the West and post-Soviet Russia. 224 PAGES 216 X 135MM FEBRUARY 2017 9781784536305 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $12.99 e ebook available

The Life and Letters of Edward Fitzgerald NEW

Edward FitzGerald’s translation of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam is one of the best known poems in the English language. But just who was Edward FitzGerald? Was he the eccentric recluse that most scholars would have us believe? Is there more to the man than just his famous translation? Drawing on their unique analysis of the more than 2,000 surviving letters of FitzGerald, together with evidence from his scrapbooks, commonplace books and materials from his personal library, the authors reveal a more convivial yet complex personality than we have been led to suppose.

Warren Hastings was the first GovernorGeneral of India, and his impeachment trial had a formative impact on the British Empire. Chiara Rolli illuminates new aspects of early British discourse around the Empire, and shows how deeply classical precedents influenced the cultural and political imaginations of eighteenth-century Britain.

LLOYD GEORGE

NEW

A Life in Politics Richard Wilkinson

David Lloyd George was not only the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in World War I, but also a powerful advocate for progressive domestic policy. Yet his legacy was compromised by his flaws as a human being; vain, cruel, capricious and dishonest, at times his notoriously corrupt nature threatened to damage the British political system. Richard Wilkinson provides a unique new perspective on one of the most phenomenally talented – but also one of the most phenomenally flawed – of British Prime Ministers. 304 PAGES 216X135MM MAY 2017 9781780763897 HARDBACK £25.00 / $45.00 A LIFE IN POLITICS e ebook available

CAPTAIN GILL’S WALKING STICK NEW

The True Story of the Sinai Murders Saul Kelly, King’s College London

In 2010, the auction of an old walking stick belonging to a British officer, Captain Gill, shed new light on a mysterious crime of the Victorian era. The gruesome murder of Gill and his companions by Bedouin in the Sinai Desert in 1883 had shocked late-Victorian Britain, and led to pressure for the British government to launch a manhunt for the killers in a vast desert area. This book uncovers the reason for the three men’s journey to the desert, the story of the murder itself and the backlash back home in England.

THE MINT

Lawrence after Arabia NEW PAPERBACK EDITION

T. E. Lawrence New introduction by Anthony Sattin In 1922, his dreams of an independent Arabia shattered, T.E. Lawrence enlisted in the RAF under the assumed name John Hume Ross. Though methodical and restrictive, life there seemed to suit Lawrence: ‘The Air Force is not a man-crushing humiliating slavery, all its days. There is sun and decent treatment, and a very real measure of happiness, to those who do not look forward or back.’ With poetic clarity, Lawrence brings to life the harsh realities of barracks life and illuminates the strange twilight world he had slipped into after his war experiences. For anyone interested in the life of one of the 20th century’s most enduring heroes and his life beyond the welldocumented Arab revolt, The Mint is essential and compelling reading. 240 PAGES 198 X 126MM AUGUST 2016 9781784535414 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $18.00 e ebook available

Consuls, Agents and Influence in the Middle East H. Lyman Stebbins La Salle University, Philadelphia

THE NEW ELIZABETHAN AGE Culture, Society and National Identity after World War II NEW

Irene Morra and Rob Gossedge (Eds) Both at Cardiff University The New Elizabethanism of the 1950s heralded a nation that would now see its ‘modern’, televised monarch preside over an imminently glorious and artistic age. This book contemplates the influence of New Elizabethanism from the Coronation festivities to the reinterment of Richard III in 2015, from the institutionalisation of the National Theatre to the Olympics of 2012. In so doing, it exposes the significance of an overlooked cultural nationalism that continues to dominate contemporary constructions of modern national identity, history and performance. Britain and its empire – the most powerful internationalist institutional force at the time – played a key role in determining the global response to these events.

CHURCHILL’S LAST STAND The Struggle to Rebuild Europe

ORWELL AND MARXISM

The Political and Cultural Thinking of George Orwell NEW IN PAPERBACK

NEW

Philip Bounds

Felix Klos

After the Second World War, with much of Europe in ruins, the victorious Winston Churchill swore to build a peace across Europe that would last a generation. Fighting against the new ‘Iron Curtain’ which had fallen across the world, and battling the personal disappointment of losing the 1945 election in Britain, Churchill dedicated the rest of his life to forging a united Europe. This book, based in part on new evidence, reveals his vision: Britain as a leading member of the European family. Through Churchill’s own private papers, Felix Klos unveils Churchill’s personal battle to regain his place in world affairs, his confidential conversations with European leaders and the thinking and preparation behind some of his most powerful speeches. A beautifully written history of Europe after the war, and a new glimpse at one of its greatest statesmen.

In this study, Philip Bounds offers a thorough introduction to Orwell the intellectual, considering the writer’s complex relationship with Marxism and reviving his reputation as a serious cultural thinker.

The Political Life of Alice Bacon

A View from inside Whitehall Brian Unwin

Rachel Reeves

Sharing eye-witness accounts, Sir Brian Unwin encounters some of the most iconic moments and personalities of late twentieth century politics. Unwin has attained an understanding of the finer details of British government like few others; at once nostalgic, personal and deeply knowledgeable, his memoirs shed light on the inner workings of Whitehall. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784538736 HARDBACK £20.00 / $40.00 e ebook available

Alice Bacon was one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable politicians. Mentored by Herbert Morrison and Hugh Gaitskell, she rose through the party becoming a Home Office minister under Roy Jenkins and latterly an Education Minister with responsibility for the introduction of comprehensive schools. In the 1960s she oversaw the introduction of substantial societal changes, including the abolition of the death penalty, the decriminalisation of homosexuality and the legalisation of abortion. Her political career spanned some of the most momentous decades in Britain’s postwar history and she played an integral part in some of the most significant social, educational and political changes which the country has ever witnessed. Labour MP Rachel Reeves here tells Alice Bacon’s story, narrating one woman’s extraordinary progression from the coalfields to the Commons. 240 PAGES 226X155MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784537685 HARDBACK £20.00 / $35.00 e ebook available

THE RIGHT TO BELONG

Citizenship and National Identity in Britain 1930-1960 NEW IN PAPERBACK Richard Weight and Abigail Beach The period 1940-1960 was a time of considerable change in British society. This brought about uncertainty among Britain’s elites, which in turn encouraged them to reflect more acutely on the direction the nation was taking. Who were the British, and by what processes did they come to be so considered? The contributors explore the development of these ideas and examine the extent to which conclusions were translated into social policy in an attempt to shape the evolution of modern Britain. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784531805 PAPERBACK £20.00 / $35.00 e ebook available

The Use and Abuse of American History Eric Foner, Columbia University For almost four decades, Eric Foner, one of America’s most distinguished historians, has introduced readers of his journalism to forgotten characters in American history, unearthing the hidden history of American radicalism. In this collection of polemical pieces, Foner expounds on the relevance of Abraham Lincoln’s legacy in the age of Obama and on the need for another era of Reconstruction. Foner ends with an open letter to Bernie Sanders analysing the great tradition of radicalism which, he argues, progressive Americans should seek to celebrate and retrieve.

Iwan Morgan shrewdly assesses Reagan’s considerable achievements whilst also highlighting the shortcomings that were an indisputable part of his record. Reagan became an American icon by articulating his country’s best values – even if he himself did not always live up to these. Today, as the Republican Party grapples with their new direction and identity, understanding the legacy of Ronald Reagan is more necessary than ever. 408 PAGES 226X155MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781780767475 HARDBACK £20.00 / $29.95 e ebook available

HISTORY 2017

New York in the 1930s Jules Stewart

foreword by Amor Towles

New York is often described as the greatest city in the world. Yet much of the iconic architecture and culture which so defines the city as we know it today – from the Empire State Building to the pastrami sandwich – only came into being in the 1930s, in what was perhaps the most significant decade in the city’s 400-year history. The roaring twenties, the catastrophic Wall Street Crash and ensuing Depression seemed to spell disaster for the Big Apple. But, in this era, New York underwent an architectural, economic, social and creative renaissance. Weaving these stories together, Jules Stewart tells the story of an iconic city in a time of change. 288 PAGES 226X155MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784535292 HARDBACK £20.00 / $29.00 e ebook available

Laura Trevelyan BBC The Winchester Rifle, the iconic gun made in New Haven, Connecticut, and sold in its hundreds of thousands around the world, mirrors American expansion at a key period in the young country’s history. The lethal repeating rifle became the defining image of America’s frontier – and was known by Native Americans as ‘the spirit gun’. It represented both the pioneering vigour and the brutal force which conquered the West. Laura Trevelyan explores the history and the family behind this renowned symbol. The entrepreneurial drive of OliverWinchester led the rifle to rapidly assume status not long after its release in 1866, gaining endorsements from the likes of Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and President Teddy Roosevelt. This engaging history sheds light on the story and myth of an American legend. 264 PAGES 226X155MM AUGUST 2016 9781780764696 HARDBACK £20.00 e ebook available

The Life of Eva Perón

University College London

Jill Hedges

Eva Perón remains Argentina’s most iconic personality, surpassing even sporting superstars such as Diego Maradona or Lionel Messi, and far outlasting her own husband, President Juan Domingo Perón. In this book, Jill Hedges tells the story of a woman whose glamour, charisma, political influence and controversial nature continue to generate huge amounts of interest 60 years after her death. From her poverty-stricken upbringing, Perón made her way to the highest echelons of society. Her charitable work earned her wide public acclaim and there was national mourning following her death from cancer at the age of just 33. Based on new sources and first-hand interviews, the book explores the personality and experiences of ‘Evita’ and the contemporary events that influenced her and were in turn influenced by her. As the first substantive biography of Eva Perón in English, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in modern Argentinean history and the cult of ‘Evita’. 288 PAGES 226X155MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784533274 HARDBACK £20.00 / $30.00 e ebook available

THE SOUTH AMERICAN DIARIES NEW

John Hopkins

While writing a novel set in South America, John Hopkins travelled there to ‘reacquaint himself with the scene’. In 1972-3, he went by train, bus and boat from Mexico City to the centre of the continent. Hopkins travelled slowly, savouring every experience. But the journey was fraught with his angst-ridden strivings to write his novel and with the troubled love he had for Madeleine, his travelling companion. In these heat-scorched, tequila-infused pages, Hopkins paints a sultry, exquisite portrait of South America, and in so doing masters an art that he believed would forever elude him.

In the early twentieth century, Argentina possessed one of the world’s most prosperous economies, yet since then it has suffered a series of boom-and-bust cycles and has failed to create a post-independence national identity. Its political and social history have been marked by frictions, violence and a series of military coups d’état. Hedges analyses the modern history of Argentina, examining how factors have contributed to its political instability and economic fluctuation. 336 PAGES 228 X 155MM JUNE 2015 9781784531065 PAPERBACK £17.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

UNDERSTANDING IRAN From Ancient Times to the Islamic Republic NEW William Beeman University of Minnesota

Iran is rarely out of the media spotlight. Whether because of its nuclear ambitions, its confrontation with the US or the provocative rhetoric of its leadership, Iran demands attention. In this riveting book, William Beeman pries open the complex and multifaceted society that makes up Iran. Sweeping through its history, Beeman seeks to show how Iranian identity has been forged. Though Iran has been profoundly influenced by the experience of many invasions, its identity is firmly anchored in its deeply subtle literary and artistic heritage, producing the most ethnically diverse yet culturally united country in the Middle East. This poetic ambiguity is felt in every aspect of Iranian social and political life today. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2017 9781845119690 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $15.95

THE OTTOMANS IN SYRIA

A History of Justice and Oppression NEW IN PAPERBACK

Dick Douwes University of Leiden The Ottoman state administered vast and complex territories and its main task was the maintenance of justice, the key concept of government in the Ottoman view of society and state. Rulers who stepped beyond the bounds of the law were judged guilty of tyranny. By the late eighteenth century, this huge state was in decline, its capabilities were limited and its resources and manpower scarce. Consequently, the Ottoman Empire relied increasingly on a policy of coercion. The Ottomans in Syria examines the administration of the Syrian interior from 1785 to 1841, showing how the Empire established independent local power bases and how their rule over the peasantry was based on oppression and extortion. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784537340 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

DEMOCRACY IN AFGHANISTAN The Golden Era of Reform and the Roots of Modern Conflict NEW Bahar Jalali, University of Arkansas

The decade of democratic reforms in Afghanistan, 1963–1973, is often viewed as a ‘golden era’ of stability and progress. Bahar Jalali demonstrates, however, that the roots of Afghanistan’s turbulent recent history can be traced back to precisely this period, when the swift implementation (and ultimate failure) of progressive reforms gave rise to extremist ideologies that would go on to become politically dominant over the next three decades. 336 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 2017 9781784538286 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF CENTRAL ASIAN STUDIES e ebook available

However, the Iranian economy has since deteriorated markedly. Acute macroeconomic instability and a sharp decline in the standard of living have thus accompanied the state’s enlarged role in the economy. SEEKING ASYLUM IN ISRAEL NEW

Refugees and the History of Migration Law Gilad Ben-Nun University of Leipzig

Between 2005 and 2014, approximately 70,000 refugees from Sudan and Eritrea entered Israel. This, along with the highly publicised antiAfrican immigrant riots, has meant that the issue of African migration is now extremely controversial in Israel. Gilad Ben-Nun looks at this phenomenon, comparing it to the debates surrounding Palestinian refugees in the region and the concept of their right of return. He argues the newer African migration issue has forced Israel to move from conceiving of itself as an ‘exceptional’ state and to necessarily viewing itself as a more ‘normal’ and ‘universal’ entity. By highlighting this shift, he ties the problems of the Israeli political and judicial systems to broader themes of migration and identity in the region. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784537609 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES e ebook available

This book spans a period of immense change from the Late Ottoman period to the present day, asking: How did Palestinian informal networks adapt to new realities? Why and how did they endure? Offering an innovative look at informal and elite familial networks in Palestine, this study is of crucial importance to scholars of Middle East studies, Palestine studies, political science and anthropology.

THE OTTOMANS AND THE MAMLUKS Imperial Diplomacy and Warfare in the Islamic World NEW IN PAPERBACK

Cihan Yüksel Muslu University of Texas

Kaya Genç

Turkey stands at the crossroads of the Middle East – caught between the West, ISIS, Syria and Russia, and governed by an increasingly hard-line leader. While talking to Turkey’s angry young people, acclaimed author Kaya Genç weaves in historical stories, visions and mythologies, showing how Turkey’s progressives and conservatives take their ideological roots from two political movements born in the Ottoman Empire: the Young Turks and the Young Ottomans, two groups of intellectuals who were united in their determination to make their country more democratic. He shows a divided society coming to terms with the 21st century, and in doing so, gets to the heart of the compelling conflicts between history and modernity in the Middle East. 240 PAGES 216X135MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784534578 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $24.00 e ebook available

WOMEN AND PUBLIC SPACE IN TURKEY NEW

Gender, Modernity and the Urban Experience Selda Tuncer Yuzuncu Yil University, Van, Turkey

The aborted coup in Turkey has fired up interest in a country which will play a critical geopolitical role in the wars of the Middle East. The spotlight is on Erdogan, the powerful leader of the country, whose authoritarian regime has increased tensions enormously. His crackdown has been brutal – thousands of journalists arrested, academics banned from leaving the country, university deans fired and high ranking army officers arrested. In some senses, the coup has given Erdogan licence to make good on his repeated promise to bring order and stability under a ‘strongman’. Here, leading Turkish expert Soner Cagaptay looks at where Erdogan comes from, what he believes in and how he will assess the threats he faces – from the liberal youth to the Gulen movement, the army plotters and the Kurdish question. 224 PAGES 216 X135MM MAY 2017 9781784538262 HARDBACK £17.99 / $29.00 e ebook available

THE YOUNG TURKS AND THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE NEW

The Aftermath of the 1908 Revolution Noémi Lévy-Aksu and François Georgeon, Bogaziçi University This book provides a historical understanding of Turkish women’s experiences of modernisation between 1950 and 1980, a vital period in which their participation in urban public life expanded through higher education and employment.

The Young Turk Revolution of 1908 reverberated across the Middle East and Europe, ushering in a new era for Turkey. However their Constantinople revolution was resisted in the provinces, and the Young Turks were forced to face down a reactionary Islamist coup. This book focuses on the compromises, successes and failures in the aftermath of 1908, and provides key readings of the events in Anatolia.

A Modern History Erik J. Zürcher, University of Leiden This revised edition builds upon and updates its twin themes of Turkey’s continuing incorporation into the capitalist world and the modernisation of state and society. It begins with the forging of closer links with Europe after the French Revolution, and the changing face of the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century. Zürcher then moves to the unified period between 1908 and 1950, and explores tumultuous times since then. 480 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2017 9781784531874 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $35.00 9781784531867 HARDBACK £75.00 / $120.00 e ebook available

INSIDE THE SERAGLIO

Private Lives of the Sultans in Istanbul NEW PAPERBACK EDITION

John Freely

This is the story of the House of Osman, the imperial dynasty that ruled the Ottoman Empire for more than seven centuries, an empire that once stretched from central Europe to North Africa and from Persia to the Adriatic. The capital of this empire was Istanbul, ancient Byzantium, a city that stands astride Europe and Asia on the Bosphorus. It was in the great palace of Topkapi Sarayi that the sultans of this empire ruled. Inside the Seraglio – a classic of Ottoman history – takes us behind the gilded doors of the Topkapi and into the heart of the palace: the harem, where the sultan would surround himself with his wives, concubines and pages – and where all the tempestuous events of empire were so often played out. This is the history of a remarkable palace in all its colour and opulence and the story of its influence on a great empire. 304 PAGES 198 X 126MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784535353 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $18.00 e ebook available

MAO

The Man Who Made China NEW UPDATED EDITION

Philip Short One of the great figures of the twentieth century, Chairman Mao looms irrepressibly over the economic rise of China. Mao Zedong was the leader of a revolution, a communist who lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty, an aggressive and distrustful leader, and a man responsible for more civilian deaths than perhaps any other historical figure. Now, four decades after Mao’s death, acclaimed biographer Philip Short presents a fully updated and revised edition of his groundbreaking and masterly biography. Vivid, uncompromising and unflinching, Short presents in one volume the man behind the propaganda – his family, his beliefs and his horrors. In doing so he shows us both the human being Mao was, and the monster he became. 768 PAGES 216X135MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784534639 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

The Life and Time of Maharajah Ranjit Singh Mohamed Sheikh NEW

University of Toulouse

In 1801, at the age of 20 years old, Ranjit Singh became the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire and subsequently emerged as one of the greatest figures in the history of the Punjab. Despite the difficult conditions he faced, Singh managed to unite the various Sikh factions and built a nation that neighbours soon learned to treat with respect. Following his death in 1839, the empire fell into gradual decline and in 1845, the Sikhs were defeated in battle by the British and fell under the influence of the East India Company. This new biography sheds new light on this important figure in Sikh history.

Sten Rynning (Ed) University of Southern Denmark In the wake of the international combat mission in Afghanistan, South Asia’s security is becoming a factor of increasing importance both to local and more distant great powers: Pakistan, India, Iran, China and the US. SINGAPORE A Modern History NEW

Michael D Barr Flinders University

While most of the writing on peacemaking during the Vietnam War concerns highlevel international diplomacy, Sophie Quinn-Judge reminds us of the courageous efforts of southern Vietnamese, including Buddhists, Catholics, students and citizens, to escape the unprecedented destruction that the US war brought to their people.

Singapore gained independence in 1965, a city-state in a world of nation-states. Yet its long and complex history reaches much farther back. Blending modernity and tradition, ideologies and ethnicities, a peculiar set of factors make Singapore what it is today. In this thematic study of the island nation, Michael D Barr proposes a new approach to understand this development. From the precolonial period through to the modern day, he traces the idea, the politics and the geography of Singapore over five centuries of rich history. In doing so he rejects the official narrative of the so-called ‘Singapore Story’. Drawing on in-depth archival work and oral histories, Singapore: A Modern History is a work both for students of the country’s history and politics, but also for any reader seeking to engage with this enigmatic and vastly successful nation.

Hugh Roberts, Tufts University The Berber identity movement in North Africa was pioneered by the Kabyles of Algeria. Hugh Roberts explores the remarkable logics of Kabyle political organisation and the unusual degree of autonomy it possessed in relation to both kinship divisions and the religious field. This book further offers a pioneering account of the social and political history of Kabylia during the Ottoman period and establishes a radically new way to understand the complex place of the Kabyles in Algerian politics. 352 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784537661 PAPERBACK £25.00 / $45.00 e ebook available

THE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF ETHIOPIA

THE BASILICAS OF ETHIOPIA

NEW

A History John Binns, University of Cambridge

An Architectural History NEW Mario di Salvo

The basilica is symbolic of the history of Christianity in Ethiopia. Aizan, the first Christian king of the Aksumite empire, was responsible for the creation of the large, five-aisled church of Maryam Seyon, sadly destroyed in 1535, and since then many hundreds of basilicas have been built in Ethiopia, many, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lalibela, literally ‘hewn from the rock’. In this book, architectural historian and architect Mario di Salvo considers the unique architectural features of Ethiopia’s basilicas and explains how they developed over time. Featuring almost 200 colour illustrations, this book is an attractive and comprehensive guide to some of Ethiopia’s most inspiring religious buildings.

JAPAN

An Environmental History NEW IN PAPERBACK Conrad Totman Yale University

From the outset, society in Japan has been shaped by its environmental context. The lush green mountainous archipelago of today supports a population of over 127 million people and one of the most advanced economies in the world. How has this come about? At what environmental cost? Conrad Totman, one of the world’s foremost scholars on Japan, here provides a comprehensive and detailed account of the country’s environmental history, from its beginnings to the present day. What makes the Japanese story particularly instructive is that the country’s boundaries are uncommonly clear and the nature, timing, and extent of external influences on its history are unusually identifiable. The Japanese experience, therefore, not only yields important insights into the processes of environmental history, it offers important lessons for the wider environmental history of the planet. 384 PAGES 234 X 156MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784537432 PAPERBACK £18.99 / $29.50 e ebook available

GENDERING HISTORY ON SCREEN NEW

THE STYLEMAKERS

Classic Modernist Design 1915-1945 Mo Teitelbaum NEW PAPERBACK EDITION

Women Filmmakers and Historical Films Julia Erhart

In Paris in the 1920s a new style was born, allying the linear proportions of late 18th century furniture to a 20th century perception, paring down superfluous detail to the essence of classic modernism. The creation of iconic interior decorator Jean-Michel Frank, this style owed much to a circle of South American collectors and patrons, including Eugenia Errázuriz. Packed with fresh material and original insights on artists such as Man Ray, John Singer Sargent and Diaghilev, this book documents how their partnership and sharing of ideas led to innovation in every field of the arts.
