TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY JIHAD

Law, Society and Military Action NEW IN PAPERBACK Elisabeth Kendall, University of Oxford and Ewan Stein, University of Edinburgh

Simon Mabon and Stephen Royle Lancaster University

The rapid expansion of ISIS and its swathe of territorial gains across the Middle East have been headline news since 2013. Yet, as media attention and analysis focuses upon military exploits, brutal tactics and radicalisation methods, it is important to consider the historical and local dynamics that have shaped the emergence of the group in the past decade. In this book Simon Mabon and Stephen Royle provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the roots, tactics and ideology of the group, exploring the interactions of the various participants involved in the formative stages of ISIS. Based on original scholarly sources and first-hand research in the region, this book provides an authoritative and closely analysed look at the emergence of one of the defining forces of the early twenty-first century. 256 PAGES 198 X 126MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536961 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95

GENERATION M

NEW

Young Muslims Changing the World Shelina Janmohamed

RADICALIZED New Jihadists and the Threat to the West NEW Peter R. Neumann King’s College London

The attacks in Paris in January and November 2015 heralded the beginning of a new wave of terrorism – one rooted in the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq. As ISIS seeks to expand its reach in the Middle East, its territory serves as a base for training and operations for a new generation of jihadis. Thousands of young people from the West, primarily from Europe, have travelled to join ISIS, re-emerging as hardened fighters with military training and a network of international contacts. Many have now returned to their homelands, where it is feared they are planning a new series of brutal attacks. Peter R. Neumann here explains the phenomenon of the ‘new jihadis’, and shows why the threat of terrorism in the West is greater than ever before. Based on interviews and previously unseen material, Neumann provides an essential introduction to one of the greatest crises of our time. 256 PAGES 216 X 135MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784536732 PAPERBACK £11.99 / $17.95

THE FOG OF PEACE

How to Prevent War NEW PAPERBACK EDITION Gabrielle Rifkind, Oxford Research Group Giandomenico Picco, United Nations Why does the world today seem so chaotic, so violent, so frightening? How to Prevent War shows how successive military interventions over the last twenty years have failed to increase our security. Leading international negotiators demonstrate here that we must ‘reset’ our thinking about the Middle East, try to understand why ordinary human beings resort to war, and why military intervention so often exacerbates the worst aspects of human behaviour. This book asks us to understand the mind of the enemy. 304 PAGES 216 X 135MM AUGUST 2016 9781784536800 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $15.95

Evaluates the importance of online platforms for affecting change and establishes a specific framework for doing so. Nordenson demonstrates the power of online activism to create an essential ‘counterpublic’ that can challenge an authoritarian state and enable excluded groups to fight in ways far more difficult to suppress than a demonstration.

REVOLTS AND THE MILITARY IN THE ARAB SPRING NEW

Popular Uprisings and the Politics of Repressions Sean Burns, Northwestern University

The Islamist Politics of Hizbullah and the Muslim Brotherhood NEW

Eva Dingel Who are the Muslim Brotherhood and Hizbullah? Despite being classified as ‘terrorist’ organisations, both have been political players in Lebanon and Egypt. Both have advocated the unity of Muslims under an Islamic state, but, rather than focus on their roles as extremist religious movements, Eva Dingel studies them as players within the political process. This comparative history of two prominent political Islamist movements sheds light on the complex interaction between Islam and politics in the Middle East. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784534332 HARDBACK £25 / $35 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

CROSS VENERATION IN THE MEDIEVAL ISLAMIC WORLD

THE BERLIN-BAGHDAD RAILWAY AND THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE

Christian Identity and Practice under Muslim Rule

Industrialization, Imperial Germany and the Middle East NEW Murat Özyüksel, Istanbul University The greatest imperial dream was to connect the might of Europe to the riches of the Middle East. Using new Ottoman Turkish sources, Murat Özyüksel shows how the Berlin-Baghdad railway became a symbol of rising European power and declining Ottoman fortunes. It is an important contribution to our understanding of the geopolitics of the Middle East before World War I.

KENNEDY AND THE MIDDLE EAST NEW

The Cold War, Israel and Saudi Arabia Antonio Perra, King’s College London

A Cultural History of Seaborne Exploration in the Islamic World NEW

Dionisius A. Agius University of Exeter

Dionisius A. Agius, one of the foremost scholars of Islamic material culture, offers a lucid and wide-ranging history of an iconic sea-faring vessel – the dhow – from medieval to modern times. While the history of global and seafaring exploration is more popular than ever, seaborne discovery from Islamic lands remains an understudied subject. Whether discussing trade and salt routes; shoals and wind patterns; spice harvest seasons; litanies and votive offerings to the sea; or the deep and resonant connection between language, memory and oral tradition, this is the first book to place the dhow in its full and remarkable cultural contexts. 304 PAGES 226 X 155MM JUNE 2017 9781848858060 HARDBACK £25 / $35

MIDDLE EAST 2017

At the height of the Cold War, the Kennedy administration designed an ambitious plan for the Middle East: to keep the Arab world neutral and contain the perceived communist threat. A SHORT HISTORY OF THE PHOENICIANS NEW

Mark Woolmer Durham University

The Phoenicians present a tantalising face to the ancient historian. Latin sources suggest they once had an extensive literature of history, law, philosophy and religion; but all now is lost. Offering new insights based on recent archaeological discoveries in their heartland of modern-day Lebanon, Mark Woolmer presents a fresh appraisal of this fascinating, yet elusive, Semitic people, showing them, above all, to have been masters of the sea: this was a civilisation that circumnavigated Africa two thousand years before Vasco da Gama in 1498. Discussing material culture, language, alphabet, religion, funerary custom, trade and expansion, he explores Phoenicia in all its paradoxical complexity. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MARCH 2017 9781780766171 HARDBACK £64 / $99 9781780766188 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 I.B.TAURIS SHORT HISTORIES

Dalia M. Gouda

T. Tvedt, University of Bergen, T. Oestigaard, University of Bergen, O. McIntyre & T. Kasse Woldesadik (Eds)

From the 1980s, billions of dollars were poured into irrigation improvement programmes in Egypt. These aimed at improving local Nile water management through the introduction of more water-efficient technology and by placing management of the improved systems in the hands of local water user associations. Dalia Gouda shows how the far-reaching social changes wrought at the village level in Egypt through the twentieth century rendered such a premise implausible at best and invalid at worst.

Minority Religions in Medieval and Early Modern Iran Aptin Khanbaghi, University of Cambridge

Today the Middle East is mostly identified with Islam, but it has been home to many other great cultures. Aptin Khanbaghi presents a thorough evaluation of the historical contributions made by religious minorities – Zoroastrians, Jews and Christians – to the societal and cultural physiognomy of the lands of Iran in pre-modern and early modern times.

MEMORY AND IDENTITY IN SASANIAN PERSIA

Sacred History and the Historiography of Ancient Iran NEW Touraj Daryaee University of California, Irvine

NEW IN PAPERBACK

Annabelle Sreberny and Massoumeh Torfeh (Eds), both at SOAS, University of London The Islamic Republic of Iran has entered its fourth decade, and the values of the Revolution it was founded upon continue to have profound and contradictory consequences for Iranian life. Despite the repressive power of the current regime, the immense creativity of popular cultural practices is a potent force. This book draws on the expertise of academics and activists to address diverse areas of social and cultural innovation that are driving progress. While religious conservatism remains the creed of the establishment, this volume uncovers an underground world of new technology, media and entertainment. 296 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784535131 PAPERBACK £17.99 / $27.50

UNDERSTANDING IRAN

NEW

From Ancient Times to the Islamic Republic William Beeman University of Minnesota

Iran is rarely out of the media spotlight. Whether because of its nuclear ambitions, its confrontation with the US or the provocative rhetoric of its leadership, Iran demands attention. In this riveting book, William Beeman pries open the complex and multifaceted society that makes up Iran. Sweeping through its history, Beeman seeks to show how Iranian identity has been forged. Though Iran has been profoundly influenced by the experience of many invasions, its identity is firmly anchored in its deeply subtle literary and artistic heritage producing the most ethnically diverse yet culturally united country in the Middle East. This poetic ambiguity is felt in every aspect of Iranian social and political life today. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2017 9781845119690 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $15.95

From Islamic Democracy to Islamist Governance

Björn Brenner Swedish Defence University and French Institute for the Near East in Amman, Jordan

The landslide victory of Hamas to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 2006 saw the ascent of a new actor on the parliamentary scene. The elections also constituted the first time Islamists had ascended to power in the Arab world by democratic means. But did Hamas proceed to govern in the same democratic manner it had displayed during these elections? Björn Brenner scrutinises the workings and origins of the Hamas government. He investigates the new government’s reaction to three key challenges to its power: official political opposition; violent radicalisation and local splinter groups; and the need to reestablish societal order and reform the judicial system. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784537777 HARDBACK £25 / $35 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

Between 2005 and 2014, approximately 70,000 refugees from Sudan and Eritrea entered Israel. This, along with the highly publicised anti-African immigrant riots in Israel, means the issue of African migration is now extremely controversial in Israel. Gilad Ben-Nun looks at this phenomenon, comparing it to the debates surrounding the Palestinian refugees in the region.

THE MISSION AND THE KINGDOM Wahhabi Power Behind the Saudi Throne NEW IN PAPERBACK

QATAR

NEW PAPERBACK EDITION

The Rise to Power and Influence Allen J. Fromherz Georgia State University

David Commins Dickinson College, Pennsylvania

Wahhabism has been generating controversy since it first emerged in Arabia in the 18th century. In the wake of September 11th instant theories have emerged that try to root Osama Bin Laden’s attacks in Wahhabism. Muslim critics have dismissed this conservative interpretation of Islam that is the official creed of Saudi Arabia as an unorthodox innovation that manipulated a suggestible people to gain political influence. David Commins’ book questions this assumption. He examines the debate on the nature of Wahhabism and offers original findings on its ascendance in Saudi Arabia, and its spread throughout other parts of the Muslim world, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. 304 PAGES 216 X 135MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784536824 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95

Migration, Nationality and Society in Kuwait Claire Beaugrand

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have long been engaged in a border dispute. In 2004, the UAE launched a diplomatic campaign to persuade Saudi Arabia to revisit the issue. The governments had already signed the Treaty of Jeddah to end a forty years’ territory conflict. However, discrepancies over the text led to recurrent tensions. This book offers understanding about the Treaty of Jeddah and why the UAE were quick to sign an agreement they would later regret. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784533236 HARDBACK £69 / $110 LIBRARY OF MODERN MIDDLE EAST STUDIES

YOUTH ACTIVISM IN EGYPT

STUDIES IN COPTIC CULTURE NEW

Islamism, Political Protest and Revolution NEW

Ahmed Tohamy Alexandria University, Egypt The protests that spread across the Middle East and North Africa in late 2010 and early 2011 took media commentators, academics and the ruling classes of these countries by surprise. In this book, Ahmed Tohamy analyses the often-neglected trajectory that led up to the protests in Egypt that culminated in the fall of Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. Tohamy’s assertion is that by examining the decade preceding this momentous event, we see that the youth movement – far from being inert – was extremely active. Tohamy uses the Social Movements Theory to argue how Egyptian youth became a new agent of change in the Middle East.

Through examination of case studies from the earliest phases of Coptic culture to today, twelve scholars address issues of cultural transmission, representation, and inter-faith interaction. Their approaches are as varied as their disciplines, covering literary criticism, comparative literature, historical and archaeo-botanical methods.

ZAR

NEW

Spirit Possession, Music, and Healing Rituals in Egypt Hager El Hadidi

Zar is both a possessing spirit and a set of reconciliation rites between the spirits and their human hosts. The ceremonies initiate devotees – the majority of whom are Muslim women – into a community centred around a cult leader, a membership that provides them with moral orientation, social support, and a sense of belonging. This new ethnographic study of zar in Egypt is based on the author’s two years of multi-sited fieldwork and firsthand knowledge as a participant, and her collection and analysis of more than three hundred zar songs, allowing her to access levels of meaning that had previously been overlooked. The result is a comprehensive and accessible exposition of the history, culture, and waning practice of zar in a modernising world. 176 PAGES 230 X 150MM JANUARY 2017 9789774166976 HARDBACK £24.95 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

MAKING REVOLUTION IN EGYPT NEW In 2010, the auction of an old walking stick shed new light on a mysterious crime. The gruesome murder of Gill and his companions in the Sinai Desert in 1883 had shocked late-Victorian Britain, and led to pressure for the British government to launch a manhunt in the desert. This book uncovers the reason for three men’s journey to the desert, the story of their murders and the backlash in England. 272 PAGES 226 X 155MM APRIL 2017 9781784533410 HARDBACK £19.99 / $30.00

THE TRADITIONAL CRAFTS OF EGYPT NEW

Menha el-Batraoui (Ed)

Many traditional crafts practised in contemporary Egypt can be traced back centuries. Scenes inscribed on the walls of ancient temples and tombs depict the earliest Egyptians making pottery and papyrus and working with other materials. The eleven chapters of this volume explore these and other crafts that continue to flourish in Egypt. It is a narrative and visual tour that provides valuable insight into contemporary Egypt as seen through its material culture and the legions of unsung artists who nourish and enrich it. 316 PAGES 210 X 240MM AUGUST 2016 9789774167539 HARDBACK £30 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

MOROCCAN DREAMS NEW

Oriental Myth, Colonial Legacy

Claudio Minca and Lauren Wagner both at the University of Wageningen, the Netherlands Morocco has long been a mythic land firmly rooted in the European imagination. For more than a century it has been appropriated by writers, artists and explorers such as Pierre Loti, Edith Wharton, Eugene Delacroix, Paul Bowles and Elias Canetti. In Moroccan Dreams, the authors explore the ways in which this legacy is being recreated for nostalgic consumption by those seeking the authentic experience of the orient. Taking the reader on a tour, both real and imaginary, to sites that form the quintessential Moroccan experience they unravel the elements that are so appealing about this imagined experience. 320 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 2016 9781848850156 HARDBACK £69 / $110 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

Foreign Policy and Western Alignment in the Modern Republic Saban Calis, Selçuk University

The Aftermath of the 1908 Revolution Noémi Lévy-Aksu and François Georgeon, Bogaziçi University

The Young Turks Revolution of 1908 reverberated across the Middle East and Europe and ushered in a new era for Turkey. However the Constantinople revolution, constitutional and urban, was resisted in the provinces, and by 1909 the Young Turks were forced to face down an Islamist coup. This book focuses on the compromises, successes and failures in the aftermath of 1908, and provides key readings of events in provincial Anatolia. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784536008 HARDBACK £69 / $110 LIBRARY OF OTTOMAN STUDIES e ebook available

NEW PAPERBACK EDITION

John Freely

This is the story of the House of Osman, the imperial dynasty that ruled the Ottoman Empire for more than seven centuries, an empire that once stretched from central Europe to North Africa and from Persia to the Adriatic. The capital of this empire was Istanbul, ancient Byzantium, a city that stands astride Europe and Asia on the Bosphorus. It was in the great palace of Topkapi Sarayi that the sultans of this empire ruled. Inside the Seraglio – a classic of Ottoman history – takes us behind the gilded doors of the Topkapi and into the heart of the palace: the harem, where the sultan would surround himself with his wives, concubines and pages – and where all the tempestuous events of empire were so often played out. This is the history of a remarkable palace in all its colour and opulence and the story of its influence on a great empire. 304 PAGES 198 X 126MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784535353 PAPERBACK £9.99 / $18.00 e ebook available

Rage and Revolution in Modern Turkey Kaya Genç

Turkey stands at the crossroads of the Middle East – caught between the West, ISIS, Syria and Russia, and governed by an increasingly hard-line leader. While talking to Turkey’s angry young people, acclaimed author Kaya Genç weaves in historical stories, visions and mythologies, showing how Turkey’s progressives and conservatives take their ideological roots from two political movements born in the Ottoman Empire: the Young Turks and the Young Ottomans, two groups of intellectuals who were united in their determination to make their country more democratic. He shows a divided society coming to terms with the 21st century, and in doing so, gets to the heart of the compelling conflicts between history and modernity in the Middle East. 240 PAGES 216 X 135MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784534578 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $19.50

This revised edition builds upon and updates its twin themes of Turkey’s continuing incorporation into the capitalist world and the modernisation of state and society. It begins with the forging of closer links with Europe after the French Revolution, and the changing face of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. Zürcher moves then to the unified period between 1908 and 1950, and exlores tumultuous times since then. 480 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2017 9781784531867 HARDBACK £75 / $120 9781784531874 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $35.00

In 2011 Erdogan promised to make a deal with the Kurdistan military wing, but the talks marked a descent into assassinations, suicide bombings and the killing of civilians on both sides. Frontline Turkey shows how the Kurds’ relationship with Turkey is at the very heart of the Middle Eastern crisis, and documents, through front-line reporting, how Erdogan’s failure to bring peace is the key to understanding current events in Middle East. 224 PAGES 216 X 135MM AUGUST 2017 9781784538415 HARDBACK £17.99 / $25.00

CRISIS AND REBELLION IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE From the Ottoman Empire to the present day, this book demonstrates the gendered subtext of Turkish foreign policy – anxiety of a ‘non-Western’ Turkish masculinity subordinated to a ‘Western’ hegemonic masculinity – and shows how Turkey’s ‘subordination’ has in turn been internalised by its own politicians. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784533472 HARDBACK £69 / $110 LIBRARY OF MODERN TURKEY

SECULARISM AND STATE RELIGION IN MODERN TURKEY

Law, Policy-Making and the Diyanet NEW Emir Kaya, Yildirim Beyazit University

Soner Cagaptay The Washington Institute

The aborted coup in Turkey has fired up interest in a country which will play a critical geopolitical role in the wars of the Middle East. The spotlight will inevitably be on Erdogan, the powerful leader of the country, whose bizarre and authoritarian regime has increased tensions – his crackdown has been brutal and consistent. In some senses, this coup has given Erdogan the licence to make good on his repeated promise to bring order and stability under a ‘strongman’. Here, leading Turkish expert Soner Cagaptay looks at where Erdogan comes from in Turkish history, what he believes in, how he has cemented his rule, and assesses the threats he faces – from the liberal youth to the Gülen movement, the army plotters and the Kurdish question. 224 PAGES 216 X 135MM MAY 2017 9781784538262 HARDBACK £17.99 / $25.00

THE GÜLEN MOVEMENT IN TURKEY

The Politics of Islam and Modernity NEW Caroline Tee University of Cambridge

What is the Gülen Movement and why is Erdogan so convinced that the organisation was behind the failed military coup of 15th July 2016? The Gülen, or Hizmet, movement in Turkey was until recently the country’s most powerful and affluent religious organisation. The movement’s central tenet is that Muslims should engage positively with modernity, especially through mastering the sciences. In this groundbreaking study, Caroline Tee, an expert on the Gülen Movement, analyses the complex attitudes of Gülen and his followers towards secular modernity. Considered against the backdrop of Turkish politics, Gülenist engagement with modern science is revealed as a key source of the influence the movement has exerted. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9781784535889 HARDBACK £20.00 / $29.50

Cihan Yüksel Muslu University of Texas Cihan Yüksel Muslu traces the intertwined stories of these two dominant Sunni Muslim empires of the early modern world, setting out to question the view that Muslim rulers were historically concerned above all with the idea of Jihad against non-Muslim entities. Through analysis of the diplomatic and military engagements around the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean, Muslu shows the interactions of these Islamic super-powers and their attitudes towards the wider world. This is the first detailed study of one of the most important political and cultural relationships in early-modern Islamic history. 392 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2016 9781784536701 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $29.50

DEMOCRACY IN AFGHANISTAN The Golden Era of Reform and the Roots of Modern Conflict NEW Bahar Jalali, University of Arkansas

First Afghan War 1838-41 John Kaye, Introduction by Benjamin Hopkins

The decade of democratic reforms in Afghanistan, 1963–1973, is often viewed as a ‘golden era’ of stability and progress. Bahar Jalali demonstrates, however, that the roots of Afghanistan’s turbulent recent history can be traced back to precisely this period, when the swift implementation (and ultimate failure) of progressive reforms gave rise to extremist ideologies that would go on to become politically dominant over the next three decades.

State-building and Islam in Post-Soviet Central Asia Helene Thibault

Between the 9th and 15th centuries, Central Asia was a major political, economic and cultural hub. This third volume of Dr Baumer’s lavishly illustrated new history is a story of invasion, when brutal conquests shaped the history of the globe. A golden age of artistic, literary and scientific innovation came to an end when Genghis Khan invaded, but Dr Baumer shows that the Mongol conquests resulted in much greater mercantile and cultural contact between Central Asia and Western Europe.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE MONGOLS NEW

George Lane SOAS, University of London

The Mongol Empire was the mightiest land empire the world has ever seen. At its height, it was twice the size of Rome’s. It commanded a population of 100 million people, while the rule of Genghis Khan marched undefeated from the Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea. George Lane argues that the Mongols were not only subjugators who swept all before them, but one of the great organising forces of history. His book traces the rise of the Khan in 1206 to the dissolution of the empire in 1368 by the Ming Dynasty. He discusses the unification of the Turko-Mongol tribes, the establishment of an imperium whose Pax Mongolica held mastery over the Central Asian steppes; imaginative policies of religious pluralism; and the legacy of the Toluid Empire of Yuan China and Ilkhanate Iran. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MARCH 2017 9781780766058 HARDBACK £64 / $99 9781780766065 PAPERBACK £10.99 / $15.95 I.B.TAURIS SHORT HISTORIES

RECOGNIZING SUFISM

NEW

Contemplation in the Islamic Tradition

Arthur F. Buehler Victoria University of Wellington Sufism is often associated only with ‘mysticism’. Arthur F. Buehler shows instead that the vast majority of Sufi practice has little or nothing to do with esoteric transcendence, but is rather focused on contemplative activity. Placing Sufism in a wider Islamic context enables Buehler to examine Sufi history, as well as current application, against a backdrop richer and more inclusive than portrayed in many surveys. Discussing the origins of Sufism; the development of Sufi lineages; Sufi lodges and the role of Sufism in colonial resistance; Sufi poetry; Sufi shrines, and Sufism in the West, the author rescues his topic from the idea that it means only union with the divine. In this original new treatment, Sufism emerges as complex and multi-layered. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2016 9781848857896 HARDBACK £64 / $99 9781848857902 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $28.00 LIBRARY OF MODERN RELIGION

POWER AND DECLINE IN THE CRIMEAN KHANATE Islamic Law and Society in the Seventeenth Century

Babism and its offshoot Baha’ism first evolved from mainstream Islam in 19th century Iran, in the face of fierce opposition from the Islamic clergy. Baha’ism has continued to expand, spreading out of Iran, yet little is known in the West about the codes prescribed by the Bab and revised by Baha’Allah. This comprehensive account of the religious rituals and practices of Babism and Baha’ism provides detailed descriptions of prayer and customs. 208 PAGES 234 X 156MM JULY 2017 9781780764283 PAPERBACK £25 / $45

MARTYRDOM AND SACRIFICE IN ISLAM

SACRED SPACE AND HOLY WAR The Rise of Shi’ite Islam Juan Cole, University of Michigan

Juan Cole demonstrates the way in which Shi‘is have sought to define space and time as sacred, and to defend those spaces from encroachments by the Other. Yet the Shi’i struggle for authentic identity in the modern world has not been only a matter of reactionary digging in. Cole shows that Shi‘i clerical institutions have been imaginative in coming to terms with phenomena such as finance capital, imperialism and the bureaucratic state. 272 PAGES 198 X 126MM JULY 2017 9781780769745 PAPERBACK £11.99 / $19.95

Islam, Activism and Equality in Britain Khadijah Elshayyal, University of Edinburgh NEW In the last fifty years, Muslim identity politics has worked to preserve religious identity, lobby the state and offer concerted responses to the political establishment. This is the first book to critically chart the national and global factors influencing the political mobilisation of British Muslim activists as Muslims. From analysing the establishment of regional organisations after 1960, Khadijah Elshayyal traces the changes of thought, direction and method for Muslim identity politics. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2017 9781784537791 HARDBACK £64 / $99 LIBRARY OF EUROPEAN STUDIES

James Morris Boston College This volume includes a fully annotated translation and Arabic critical edition of one of the earliest surviving Ismaili Shi’i writings, by the Yemeni author Ja’far Ibn Mansur al-Yaman. In addition to being a key source for pre-Fatimid Ismaili history, The Master and the Disciple is important for its unique role as the most elaborate example of the narrated dramatic dialogue form in Arabic literature. The work also vividly illustrates the processes by which early esoteric Shi’i ideas and institutions eventually contributed to the evolution of more familiar forms of Sufism in the Islamic West. 464 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2017 9781780764269 PAPERBACK £25 / $45 I.B.TAURIS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INSTITUTE OF ISMAILI STUDIES

Their presence in Northwest Africa pre-dates the rise of Islam and continues to the present day, combining elements of Berber (Amazigh), Arab, Sephardi and European culture. Emily Gottreich examines the history of Jews in Morocco from the preIslamic period to post-colonial times, drawing on newly acquired evidence from archival materials in Rabat. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 2017 9781780768496 HARDBACK £64 / $99 LIBRARY OF MIDDLE EAST HISTORY

ANIMATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST Practice and Aesthetics from Baghdad to Casablanca NEW

Stefanie Van de Peer (Ed), University of Exeter The success of animation in the Middle East is in part a product of a changing cultural climate, which is increasingly calling for art that reflects politics. Equally, the professionalisation and popularisation of film festivals and the emergence of animation studios and private initiatives are the results of a growing consumer culture, in which family-friendly entertainment is big business. Animation in the Middle East uncovers the history and politics that have defined the practice and study of animation in the Middle East, and explores the innovative visions of contemporary animators in the region. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM JANUARY 2017 9781784533267 HARDBACK £64 / $99 TAURIS WORLD CINEMA SERIES

ARAB SUBCULTURES

NEW

Transformations in Theory and Practice Tarik Sabry and Layal Ftouni University of Westminster

What is ‘Arab’ about Arab subcultures? This is the first book to set out to delineate different ways of studying and theorising Arab subcultural groups and practices, including film, graffiti, music, live art performances, Arab techies and youth cultures. Contributors tackle a number of questions including: How is the study of Arab subcultures to be theorised? How are we to analyse such creative processes in a new worldliness characterised by transtemporality and trans-subjectivity? This book effectively tackles the key intellectual task of re-imagining the uneasy relation between aesthetics and politics in the age of revolutions.

SURREALISM IN EGYPT

CAIRO INSIDE OUT

Trevor Naylor and Doriana MacMullen NEW

NEW

Modernism and the Art and Liberty Group Sam Bardaouil

The Surrealist, Cairo-based Art and Liberty Group was founded in 1938 with its manifesto Long Live Degenerate Art. Rejecting the convergence of art and nationalism, and the academic style endorsed by the Egyptian state and bourgeois conventions, its members aligned themselves with an evolving and international Surrealist movement. The group created a distinct reworking of Surrealism, providing a generation of disillusioned artists and writers with a platform for cultural reform and anti-Fascist protest. Surrealism in Egypt is the first comprehensive analysis of Art and Liberty’s artworks, literature and critical writings. By addressing the group’s long-lost and often misconstrued legacy, the author charts Art and Liberty’s significant contribution towards a new definition of Surrealism. This book rewrites the history of Surrealism itself – advocating for a new definition of the movement to reflect an inclusive vision of art history.

THE FINAL BET

NEW

A Novel Abdelilah Hamdouchi Translated by Jonathan Smolin

In the once beautiful city of Aleppo, one Syrian family descends into tragedy and ruin. The mother, abandoned by her husband, struggles to raise her children alone. Her daughter Sawsan flirts with the militias, the ruling party, and finally religion, seeking but never finding salvation. All are slowly choked in the fog of violence and decay, as their lives are plundered and their dreams wrecked by the brutal Assad regime. Set between the 1960s and 2000s, No Knives in the Kitchens of this City is a graceful and profound depiction of life under tyranny. Through the story of a single family, it speaks of the persecution of a whole society. 256 PAGES 205 X 130MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9789774167812 PAPERBACK £9.99 HOOPOE

HAFIZ AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES

A Study of Fourteenthcentury Persian Lyric Poetry Dominic Brookshaw NEW University of Manchester

Published between 1906 and 1930, Molla Nasreddin was a satirical Azeri periodical edited by Jalil Mammadguluzadeh and named after the legendary Sufi wise man-cum-fool of the Middle Ages. With an acerbic sense of humour and realist illustrations, Molla Nasreddin attacked the hypocrisy of the Muslim clergy, the colonial policies of European nations, and later the United States, towards the rest of the world and the corruption of local elites, while at the same time arguing for Westernisation, educational reform and equal rights for women. The publication was an instant success and became one of the most influential publications of its kind and was read across the Muslim world. Slavs and Tatars has brought together this collection of sketches, caricatures and satirical writings from Molla Nasreddin, in the process revealing an unusual manifestation of nationalism in the Caucasus and its surrounding regions. 208 PAGES 280 X 240MM DECEMBER 2016 9781784535483 HARDBACK £35 / $49

THE VISION OF RUMI

NEW

Revealing the Masnavi, Persia’s Great Masterpiece Alan Williams, University of Manchester Alan Williams here offers a novel approach to reading and understanding this great jewel of world literature. Williams shows that those who have tried to find the key to its message in its separate themes have had little success. He argues that the work can only be fully comprehended if the ‘meaning’ of the text is understood to lie in the poetry itself. The visionary poetic metaphors and devices are not the container for the teachings: they are the teachings. This revelatory unlocking enables Rumi’s voice and purpose to become fully transparent. 224 PAGES 228 X 155MM JULY 2017 9781780766256 HARDBACK £25 / $39

POLITICS AND PALESTINIAN LITERATURE IN EXILE NEW

Gender, Aesthetics and Resistance in the Short Story

EDWARD SAID’S CONCEPT OF EXILE

Identity and Cultural Migration in the Middle East Rehnuma Sazzad NEW SOAS, University of London

Joseph R. Farag University of Minnesota

This is the first English language study to explore this unique genre. Joseph Farag employs an interdisciplinary approach to examine the political function of literary texts and the manner in which cultural production responds to crucial moments in Palestinian history. Drawing from the works of Samira Azzam, Ghassan Kanafani and Ibrahim Nasrallah, Farag traces developments in the short story as they relate to the pivotal events of what the Palestinians call the Nakba (‘catastrophe’), Naksa (‘defeat’) and First Intifada (‘uprising’).

Edward Said saw the consequences of the dismantling of Palestine through his parents’ experiences and statelessness imposed on the Palestinians. His own experience of exile intensified in the USA.Yet despite the significance of exile to Said’s life and work, Sazzad is the first to examine this important theme in his writings.

COMMITTED TO DISILLUSION Activist Writers in Egypt from the 1950s to the 1980s NEW David DiMeo

David DiMeo focuses on the work of three leading writers whose socially committed fiction was adapted to the disenchantment and discontent of the late twentieth century: Naguib Mahfouz, Yusuf Idris, and Sonallah Ibrahim. Despite their disappointments with the direction of Egyptian society in the decades following the 1952 revolution, they kept the spirit of committed literature alive through a deeply introspective examination of the relationship between the writer, the public, and political power. 272 PAGES 230 X 150MM SEPTEMBER 2016 9789774167614 HARDBACK £35 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS

Lawrence after Arabia T. E. Lawrence, New introduction by Anthony Sattin

Europe, Asia and the Middle East Robert Kerr

In 1922, his dreams of an independent Arabia shattered, T.E. Lawrence enlisted in the RAF under the assumed name John Hume Ross. Though methodical and restrictive, life there seemed to suit Lawrence. With poetic clarity, Lawrence brings to life the harsh realities of barracks life and illuminates the strange twilight world he had slipped into after his war experiences.
