Classics & the Ancient World

CONTENTS

Message from the Editors: Since it first began publishing books some half-dozen years ago, the I.B.Tauris programme in classical antiquity has tried to balance considered reflection on the ancient past with a linkage of that past to the present and the future. Whether examining issues of imperialism, ethnicity and colonialism, or ideas about sexuality, war and slavery, our authors share a passion for thinking about antiquity not as an end in itself, but rather in the context of passionate engagement with other disciplines and with a view to locating the myriad ways in which classical studies offers fresh insights into the modern as well as the ancient world. Our list for 2015 maintains this interdisciplinary interest in bridge-building between old and new. Highlights include Elizabeth Moignard’s elegant study of Exekias, which places the artist against the canvas of the turbulent times in which he lived (p.5); Silvia Montiglio’s wide-ranging monograph on tropes of sleep and sleeplessness in ancient Greek literature (p.6); upcoming titles on Sappho, Martial and Ovid in Understanding Classics (p.3); the latest volumes in Ancients and Moderns on War, Sex and Science (pp.8-9); a major edition and translation of Solon’s Laws (p.10); and an entertaining treatment of the astonishingly creative ways in which ideas about Egypt and the Ancient Near East captured the imagination of the world (p.17). A welcome facet to our programme is our recent association with the Classical Press of Wales, who possess one of the finest lists in print on ancient Sparta and whose books will now be marketed and distributed by I.B.Tauris. We commend this list to you and look forward to your feedback and to your own proposals and projects. Alex Wright (Executive Editor, Classics) awright@ibtauris.com

GREECE & ROME / UNDERSTANDING CLASSICS SERIES

UNDERSTANDING CLASSICS Edited by Richard Stoneman, University of Exeter

Understanding Classics is a specially commissioned series which aims to introduce the outstanding authors and thinkers of antiquity to a wide audience of appreciative modern readers, whether undergraduate students of classics, literature, philosophy and ancient history or generalists interested in the classical world. Each volume – written by leading figures internationally – will examine the historical significance of the writer or writers in question; their social, political and cultural contexts; their use of language, literature and mythology; extracts from their major works; and their reception in later European literature, art, music and culture.

ARISTOCRACY IN ANTIQUITY Redefining Greek and Roman Elites Edited by Nick Fisher, University of Cardiff & Hans van Wees, University College London

Anti-Athenian Attitudes across the Greek, Hellenistic and Roman Worlds Edited by Anton Powell & Katerina Meidani

The words ‘aristocrats’, ‘aristocracy’ and ‘aristocratic values’ appear in many a study of ancient history and culture. Sometimes these terms are used with a precise meaning. More often they are casual shorthand for ‘upper class’, ‘ruling elite’ and ‘high standards’. This book demonstrates not only that true aristocracies were rare in the ancient world, but also that the modern use of ‘aristocracy’ in a looser sense is misleading. The word comes with connotations derived from medieval and modern history. Antiquity, it is here argued, was different.

The Legendary Warrior Women of Antiquity David Braund University of Exeter

The idea of the Amazons is one of the most romantic and resonant in all antiquity. The Greeks were fascinated by the notion of a race of fierce female fighters: pitiless battles between the Athenians and Amazons echo through the Archaic period. In his vibrant new book, David Braund shows how these lithe warriors captivated moderns as well as ancients, unleashing a myth so powerful that from the medieval and Renaissance eras to the present it held its recipients spellbound. He explores portrayals by Virgil, Chaucer, Ariosto and Mary Renault – who writes lyrically of the Amazons as muscular moonmaids of Artemis, and looks at the basis of the legend in history, locating in recent archaeology a reality as surprising and evocative as any fiction told through story or myth. 224 PAGES 228 X 155MM SEPTEMBER 2015 9781780769561 HARDBACK £20.00 NON USA e ebook available

MASTER OF ATTIC BLACKFIGURE PAINTING NEW

The Art and Legacy of Exekias Elizabeth Moignard University of Glasgow

The great 6th-century BCE Attic potter-painter Exekias is acclaimed as the most accomplished exponent of late ‘black-figure’ art. Despite his importance in the history of art and archaeology, little has been written about Exekias in his own right. Elizabeth Moignard, a leading historian of classical art, here corrects that neglect by addressing her subject as more than just a painter. She positions Exekias as a remarkable but nevertheless grounded and receptive man of his age, working in an Athens that was sensitive to Homeric literature and drawing on that great corpus of poetry to explore its own emerging concepts of honour, heroism, leadership and military tradition. 288 PAGES 246 X 189MM JUNE 2015 9781780761411 HARDBACK £68.00 / $110.00 LIBRARY OF CLASSICAL STUDIES, VOL. 3 e ebook available

MISERY AND FORGIVENESS IN EURIPIDES NEW

Meaning and Structure in Hippolytus Boris Nikolsky, Russian State Univeristy The tragedies of Euripides are valued especially in our own day for their sceptical attitude to authority and divinity, for their psychological complexity and for their sympathetic but unsentimental portrayal of assertive women. In this striking new monograph, Boris Nikolsky reinterprets a Euripidean tragedy which combines these qualities to the highest degree, the Hippolytus. 234 X 156MM 280 PAGES JUNE 2015 9781910589038 HARDBACK £58.00 THE CLASSICAL PRESS OF WALES*

XENOPHON AND SPARTA

Empire and Civil War Edited by Kathryn Welch

The writing of Spartan history for long involved gliding, sometimes seamlessly, between the evidence of very different ancient sources. Now, a short series conceived by The Classical Press of Wales* will examine closely and individually each of the principal sources and its relationship with classical Sparta. The first volume deals with Xenophon, to whom we owe a very large part of our image of the Lacedaemonians.

ANCIENT GEOGRAPHY

The Discovery of the World in Classical Greece and Rome NEW Duane W. Roller, Ohio State University

Silvia Montiglio Johns Hopkins University Sleep was viewed as a boon by the ancient Greeks: sweet, soft, honeyed, balmy, care-loosening, as the Iliad has it. Silvia Montiglio’s imaginative and comprehensive study of the topic illuminates the various ways writers in antiquity used sleep to deal with major aspects of plot and character development. The author shows that sleeplessness, too, carries great weight in classical literature. Doom hangs by a thread as Agamemnon – in Iphigenia in Aulis – paces, restless and sleepless, while around him everyone else dozes on. Exploring recurring tropes of somnolence and wakefulness in the Iliad, the Odyssey, Athenian drama, the Argonautica and ancient novels by Xenophon, Chariton, Heliodorus and Achilles Tatius, this is a unique contribution to better understandings of ancient Greek writing. 336 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2015 9781784533519 HARDBACK £62.00 e ebook available

CLASSICS & THE ANCIENT WORLD 2015

The last dedicated book on ancient geography was published more than sixty years ago. The topic is therefore overdue a fresh and sustained treatment. In offering precisely that, Duane Roller explores important topics like knowledge of the world in the Archaic periods; Greek expansion into the Black Sea and the West; and the travels of Alexander the Great. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2015 9781784530761 HARDBACK £62.50 / $99.00 LIBRARY OF CLASSICAL STUDIES, VOL. 9 e ebook available

GREECE & ROME / NEW DIRECTIONS IN CLASSICS SERIES

NEW DIRECTIONS IN CLASSICS Edited by Duncan F. Kennedy, Charles Martindale and Shane Butler University of Bristol Published in association with the Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition

In the last generation Classics has changed almost beyond recognition. The subject as taught thirty years ago involved enormous concentration on just two periods: 5th century Athens and late Republican Rome. There was no reception, virtually no study of women or popular culture, and little attention given to late antiquity. Today, Classics at its best again has an unusually broad interdisciplinary scope, and reaches out to the arts and humanities generally as well as beyond. It is just such a ‘New Classics’ that this exciting series seeks to promote – an open-minded Classics committed to debate and dialogue, with a leading role in the humanities; a Classics neither antiquarian nor crudely presentist; a Classics of the present, but also of the future. New Directions in Classics seeks to do something fresh, and showcase the work of writers who are setting new agendas at the frontiers of the subject. It aims for a wide readership amongst all those, both within the academy and outside, who want to engage seriously with ideas.

Antiquity and Its Legacy

Alfred S. Bradford, University of Oklahoma Combining astute analysis of the logistics of conflict with the ethics of war, and drawing on a diverse range of cultural texts (from the Iliad to Hugo Grotius and von Clausewitz), Alfred S. Bradford draws fascinating parallels between warfare and battle in ancient and modern societies. He shows that despite huge differences in weaponry and firepower, the basic principles of warfare have remained unchanged over thousands of years. War in the modern age is persistently illuminated by antiquity. 192 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2014 9781848859340 HARDBACK £35.00 9781848859357 PAPERBACK £12.99 NON USA e ebook available

SEX

NEW

Antiquity and its Legacy

Daniel Orrells, Warwick University Showing how ancient words and ideas have left a significant imprint on present-day ideas about sex, Daniel Orrells offers a bold new narrative of how the scientific study of sexuality came into being. Uncovering the intriguing story of how the obscene and erotic verse of Roman epigram and love-poetry became the sanitised language of nineteenth-century sexual science, this divertingly readable book demonstrates how the reception of both Latin and Greek texts were central to the development of modern sexology and psychoanalysis. Ranging from Sappho, Catullus and Martial to Michel Foucault, Richard Krafft-Ebing and Sigmund Freud, the author reveals just how profoundly classics has shaped the landscape of sexual identity that we inhabit today. 160 PAGES 216 X 134MM FEBRUARY 2015 978184885 519 9 HARDBACK £35.00 978184885 520 5 PAPERBACK £12.99 NON USA e ebook available

10 greece & rome WRITING ANCIENT HISTORY An Introduction to Classical Historiography Luke Pitcher University of Oxford

The twin deities known by the ancient Greeks as the Dioskouroi, and by the Romans as the Gemini, were popular figures in the classical world. They were especially connected with youth, low status and service, and were embraced by the common people in a way that eluded those gods associated with regal magnificence or the ruling classes. Despite their popularity, no dedicated study has been published on the horse gods for over a hundred years. Henry John Walker here addresses this neglect. His comparative study traces the origins, meanings and applications of the twin divinities to social and ritual settings in Greece, Vedic India, Etruria and classical Rome. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM JANUARY 2015 9781784530037 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00

The Remarkable Legacy of Egypt and the Ancient Near East Robin Derricourt University of New South Wales

Outsiders have long attributed to the Middle East, and especially to ancient Egypt, meanings that go way beyond the rational and observable. The region has been seen as the source of civilization, religion, the sciences and the arts; but also of mystical knowledge and outlandish theories, whether about the Lost City of Atlantis or visits by alien beings. In his exploration of how its past has been creatively interpreted by later ages, Robin Derricourt surveys the various claims that have been made for Egypt – particularly the idea that it harbours an esoteric wisdom vital to the world’s survival. His book is the first to show in depth how ancient Egypt and the surrounding lands have so continuously and seductively tantalised the Western imagination. 320 PAGES 228 X 155MM APRIL 2015 9781784532758 HARDBACK £25.00 / $40.00 e ebook available

Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt Salima Ikram The invention of mummification enabled the ancient Egyptians to preserve the bodies not only of humans but also of animals, so that they could live forever. This book looks at animal mummies, the methods of mummification, and the animal cemeteries located at sites throughout Egypt. The study of of these animals provide information not only about the fauna of the country, and indirectly, its climate, but also about animal domestication, veterinary practices, human nutrition, mummification technology, and the religious practices of the ancient Egyptians. 264 PAGES 240 X 170MM MAY 2015 9789774166969 PAPERBACK £19.95 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS*

EGYPTOLOGY IN THE PRESENT Experiential and Experimental Methods in Archaeology NEW Edited by Carolyn Graves-Brown This volume explores the all-too-often opposed practices of experimental and experiential archaeology. The experimental method is privileged in academic institutions and thus perhaps is subject to clear definitions. It tends to be associated with the scientific and technological. In opposition, the experiential is more rarely defined and is usually associated with schoolchildren, museums and heritage centres; it is often criticised for being unscientific. 280 PAGES 234 X 156MM JUNE 2015 9781910589021 HARDBACK £58.00 THE CLASSICAL PRESS OF WALES*

A History of Egyptology

Jason Thompson Bates College

The discovery of ancient Egypt and the development of Egyptology are momentous events in intellectual and cultural history. The history of Egyptology is the story of the people, famous and obscure, who constructed the picture of ancient Egypt that we have today, recovered the Egyptian past while inventing it anew, and made a lost civilization comprehensible to generations of enchanted readers and viewers thousands of years later. This, the first of a three-volume survey of the history of Egyptology, follows the fascination with ancient Egypt from antiquity until 1881, tracing the recovery of ancient Egypt and its impact on the human imagination in a saga filled with intriguing mysteries, great discoveries, and scholarly creativity. Wonderful Things affirms that the history of ancient Egypt has proved continually fascinating, but it also demonstrates that the history of Egyptology is no less so.

This book presents a history of Old Cairo based on new archaeological evidence gathered between 2000 and 2006 during a major project to lower the groundwater level affecting the churches and monuments of this area of Cairo known by the Romans as Babylon. 312 PAGES 300 X 250MM MAY 2015 9789774162992 HARDBACK £40.00 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO PRESS*

The Age of the Silk Roads (c 200 BC – c 900 AD) shaped the course of the future. The foundation by the Han dynasty of an extensive network of interlinking trade routes, collectively known as the Silk Road, led to an explosion of cultural and commercial transactions across Central Asia that had a profound impact on civilization. In this second volume of his authoritative history of the region, Christoph Baumer explores the unique flow of goods, peoples and ideas along the dusty tracks and wandering caravan routes that brought European and Mediterranean orbits into contact with Asia. Tracing the rise and fall of empires, this richly illustrated book charts the ebb and flow of epic history. 408 PAGES 289 X 237MM OCTOBER 2014 9781780768328 HARDBACK £25.00 / $39.50 e ebook available

The Sasanian Empire was one of the most significant empires of late antiquity. Here, Touraj Daryaee shows how the idea of Iran – its attributes, mores, values, boundaries and traditions – was brought to the Zoroastrian, Jewish and Christian populations of the Sasanian Empire and accepted and internalized by these religious communities. 224 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2015 9781780762487 HARDBACK £56.00 / $90.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 44 e ebook available

Hellenism and the Representation of the Achaemenid Empire Sasan Samiei In this much-anticipated and lively book, Eden Naby charts the the community from its identification with the ancient Akkadian and Assyrian empires through to Christian conversion; subsequent religious fragmentation; genocide in the First World War; and statelessness and dispersal across the globe. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2015 9781848857568 HARDBACK £58.00 / $94.00 e ebook available

This book is a measured rejoinder to the dominant narrative that considers the Graeco-Persian Wars to be merely the first round of an oft-repeated battle between the despotic ‘East’ and the broadly enlightened ‘West’. Sasan Samiei analyses the historiography which has skewed our understanding of this crucial era. 336 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2014 9781780764801 HARDBACK £62.00 / $99.00 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRANIAN STUDIES, VOL. 47 e ebook available
