The Devil A New Biography

PHILIP C. ALMOND Key Selling Points  Brilliant new intellectual history of the influence of the devil on western culture  No obvious competition: the first biography for many years  Author with exceptionally strong name-recognition/reputation in his field Description

Author

Philip C Almond is Emeritus Professor of Religion in the University of Queensland. His previous books include The Witches of Warboys: An Extraordinary Story of Sorcery, Sadism and Satanic Possession (2008), England’s First Demonologist: Reginald Scot and ‘The Discoverie of Witchcraft’ (2011) and The Lancashire Witches: A Chronicle of Sorcery and Death on Pendle Hill (2012), all published by I.B.Tauris.

It is often said that the devil has all the best tunes. He also has as many names as he has guises. Lucifer, Mephistopheles, Beelzebub (in Christian thought), Ha-Satan or the Adversary (in Jewish scripture) and Iblis or Shaitan (in Islamic tradition) has throughout the ages and across civilizations been a compelling and charismatic presence. For two thousand years the supposed reign of God has been challenged by the fiery malice of his opponent, as contending forces of good and evil have between them weighed human souls in the balance. In this rich and multi-textured biography, Philip C Almond explores the figure of the devil from the first centuries of the Christian era through the rise of classical demonology and witchcraft persecutions to the modern post-Enlightenment ‘decline’ of Hell. The author shows that the Prince of Darkness, in all his incarnations, remains an irresistible subject in history, religion, art, literature and culture.

MIDDLE EAST / INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Author

Ginny Hill is an associate fellow at the influential foreign affairs thinktank Chatham House, where she runs the Yemen Forum. Formerly an award-winning filmmaker and correspondent, she has reported from Yemen for the BBC, the Christian Science Monitor, the Economist, Slate magazine and Jane’s. Ginny has produced news, current affairs and documentary from the Middle East for Al-Jazeera, CNBC, CNN, Channel 4 News and ITV. She studied Arabic and the Koran in Yemen’s madrassas.

Linking the lawless Horn of Africa to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, Yemen is a strategically vital country on the brink of collapse, whose implosion, combined with a growing Al Qaeda presence, could have consequences for the whole Middle East and beyond. Ginny Hill takes us inside this fascinating and complex country, introducing us to a range of characters; Somali refugees, tribal warlords, Qat-chewing philosophers, corrupt politicians and gun-runners. She shows us the transnational networks of crime, people-smuggling and terrorism which sweep through the country, the legacy of civil war, and how the most vibrant democracy in the Middle East became mired in corruption and separatist violence. Part reportage, part history, and part informed analysis, this is an indispensable guide to the little-understood country which is about to dominate international headlines. Praise for the book “Yemen – a country of multiple realties, complex, layered, and explosive, where some of the hungriest people in the world strive to live. Ginny Hill is a rare outsider who has lived the country, she is superbly seasoned in its physical and political terrain. Her book is a revelation.” JON SNOW, JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER

A Spy in the Archives A Memoir of Cold War Russia

SHEILA FITZPATRICK

Key Selling Points  Sheila Fitzpatrick is one of the bestknown scholars of the Soviet Union  Provides a unique insight into Cold War Moscow  Full of human interest and personal insights

Description

OCTOBER 2013 £22.50 288 PAGES 25 BW IN 16PP PLATES

HISTORY / RUSSIA / COLD WAR Author Sheila Fitzpatrick is Honorary Professor of History at the University of Sydney and Emerita Professor of History at the University of Chicago. One of the most acclaimed historians of twentieth-century Russia, she is the author of several books, including The Russian Revolution; Stalin’s Peasants; Everyday Stalinism; and Tear off the Masks!

Moscow in the 1960s was the other side of the Iron Curtain: mysterious, exotic, even dangerous. In 1966 the historian Sheila Fitzpatrick travelled to Moscow to research in the Soviet archives. This was the era of Brezhnev, of a possible ‘thaw’ in the Cold War, when the Soviets couldn’t decide either to thaw out properly or re-freeze. Moscow, the world capital of socialism, was renowned for its drabness. The buses were overcrowded; there were endemic shortages and endless queues. This was also the age of regular spying scandals and tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions and it was no surprise that visiting students were subject to intense scrutiny by the KGB. Many of Fitzpatrick’s friends were involved in espionage activities – and indeed others were accused of being spies or kept under close surveillance. In this book, Sheila Fitzpatrick provides a unique insight into everyday life in Soviet Moscow. Full of drama and colourful characters, her remarkable memoir highlights the dangers and drudgery faced by Westerners living under communism.

Peoples Apart Israel, South Africa and the Apartheid Question EDITED BY ILAN PAPPÉ

POLITICS/ISRAELPALESTINE/MIDDLE EAST Author

Ilan Pappé is one of Israel's most prominent historians. Having taught for many years at the University of Haifa, he is now Chair of History at the University of Exeter. He is the author of numerous books, including 'The Modern Middle East' and 'The Making of the Arab-Israeli Conflict' (I.B.Tauris), and is a regular contributor to the London Review of Books.

The word 'apartheid' evokes the ideology of racial segregation which dominated South Africa for so many years. Yet opinion-formers, including former US President Jimmy Carter, are increasingly using the word ‘apartheid’ to describe the situation of Arabs in Israel and the Occupied Territories. It is argued that even within Israel itself the Arab population is excluded from participation in civic life, and that the Palestinian enclaves created by the path of the ‘security barrier’ in the Occupied Territories are no more than modern day Bantustans. The use of the word ‘apartheid’ is highly emotive, and has serious implications for international policy. The concept lies at the heart of the growing trades union movement to boycott Israeli products. Yet in the heat of debate, no-one has unpacked the South Africa analogy, and brought on board the expertise of historians, lawyers, journalists and policymakers familiar with the politics of both countries. Now for the first time one of Israel’s most celebrated academics, Ilan Pappé, has gathered together these perspectives in an accessible format which lays out the legal, political and social dimensions of apartheid, and provides an authoritative assessment of its relevance to Israel.

Islam in America JONATHAN CURIEL Key Selling Points  Series the first to engage systematically with topical questions of different 'Islams'  Series Editor is Malise Ruthven  Crossover appeal to Religion/Politics/American Studies

RELIGION / POLITICS

Author

Jonathan Curiel is a former staff writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, whose work has also appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review, Salon.com and the LA Times. He is the author of Al America: Travels through America's Arab and Islamic Roots.

Islam is a hidden ingredient in the melting pot of America. Though there are between 2 and 8 million Muslims in the USA, Islam has traditionally had little political clout compared to other minority faiths. Nonetheless it is believed to be the country’s fastest-growing religion, with a vibrant culture of theological debate, particularly regarding the role of women preachers. In Islam in America, Jonathan Curiel traces the story of America’s Muslims from the seventeenth-century slave trade to the eighteenth-century immigration wave to the Nation of Islam. Drawing on interviews in communities from industrial Michigan to rural California, Curiel portrays the diversity of practices, cultures and observances that make up Muslim America. He profiles the leading personalities and institutions representing the community, and explores their relationship to the wider politics of America, particularly after 9/11. Islam in America offers an indispensable guide to the social life of modern Islam and the diversity of contemporary America.

Albania's Mountain Queen Edith Durham and the Balkans

MARCUS TANNER Key Selling Points  First book to look in detail at Edith Durham’s relationship with the Balkans  Fascinating story of a woman ahead of her time  Unique insight into Balkan independence movements

Description Young ladies in the Victorian and Edwardian eras were not expected to travel unaccompanied, and certainly not to the remote corners of Southeast Europe, then part of the crumbling Ottoman Empire. But Edith Durham was no ordinary lady.

HISTORY / BALKANS /EUROPEAN HISTORY Author

Marcus Tanner is an author and journalist, specialising in Central and Eastern Europe. He was The Independent’s Balkan correspondent from 1988 to 1994 and was subsequently Assistant Foreign Editor. He is the author of Croatia: A Nation Forged in War; The Raven King: Matthias Corvinus and the Fate of His Lost Library; The Last of the Celts and Ireland's Holy Wars: The Struggle for a Nation's Soul 1500-2000 (all Yale University Press)

In 1900, at the age of 37, Durham set sail for the Balkans for the first time, a trip which changed the course of her life. Her experiences kindled a profound love of the region which saw her return frequently in the following decades. She became a confidante of the King of Montenegro, ran a hospital in Macedonia and, following the outbreak of the First Balkan War in 1912, became one of the world’s first female war correspondents. Her popularity in the region earned her the affectionate title ‘Queen of the Mountains’ and she is fondly remembered in Albania until this day. Marcus Tanner here tells the fascinating story of Durham’s relationship with the Balkans, painting a vivid portrait of a remarkable, if sometimes formidable, woman. Praise for Marcus Tanner "Croatia: A Nation Forged in War is a much-needed introduction to this southern Slavic country . . . fascinating and well-documented. . . . Celestial Revolutionary Copernicus, the Man and His Universe

JOHN FREELY

Key Selling Points  John Freely is a bestselling writer of popular trade histories  A major new trade biography of Copernicus  Copernicus: his discoveries changed the world Description

In the spring of 1500, at the apex of the Renaissance, a papal secretary to the Borgia Pope, Alexander VI, wrote that "All the world is in Rome." Though no one knew it at the time, this included a young scholar by the name of Nicolaus Copernicus who would one day change the world.

BIOGRAPHY / HISTORY / SCIENCE Author

John Freely is one of the most widely respected writers of travel books, histories and guides about Greece and Turkey. He is the author of The Grand Turk, Storm on Horseback, Children of Achilles, The Cyclades, The Ionian Islands, The Western Shores of Turkey, Strolling through Athens, Strolling through Venice and the bestselling Strolling through Istanbul (all I.B.Tauris). He lives in Istanbul.

One of the greatest polymaths of his or any age - linguist, lawyer, doctor, diplomat, politician, mathematician, scientist, astronomer, artist, cleric - Copernicus gave the world arguably the most important scientific discovery of the modern era: that earth and the planets revolve around the sun and that the earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours. His heliocentric theory and the discoveries that would follow ushered in the age of modern astronomy, often called the Copernican Age, and change the way we look at the universe forever. Here, for the first time, is a biography of Copernicus that not only describes his theories but the life of the man himself and the epic, thrilling times in which he lived.

POLITICS / ECONOMICS / INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS / DEVELOPMENT Author STUDIES

Laurence Cockcroft is a Development Economist. He is a Founder of Transparency International, the global civil society organization against corruption, and was formerly Chairman of its UK chapter. He is the author of Africa’s Way: A Journey from the Past (I.B.Tauris).

Corruption has played a pivotal role in determining the current state of the world - from mass poverty in developing countries, to the destruction of natural resources and to the erosion of trust in political parties. Laurence Cockcroft here argues that corruption has to be seen as the result of the interplay between elite ‘embedded networks’, greed and organised crime. He shows how the growth of corruption has been facilitated by globalisation, the integration of new and expanding markets into the world economy, and by the rapid expansion of ‘offshore’ financial facilities. These facilities provide a home to largely unregulated pools of finance derived from personal fortunes, organised crime and pricing malpractice in international trade. By identifying the main drivers of corruption world-wide and analyzing the current action to control them, this book suggests ways in which the problems caused by corruption can be addressed and ultimately prevented. Praise for the book ‘deserves a place on the library shelf of everyone committed to sustainable development in free and plural societies.’ - LORD PATTEN, FORMER EUROPEAN COMMISSIONER AND FORMER GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG ‘Laurence Cockcroft has built a formidable reputation as an anti-corruption crusader and co-founder of Transparency International. He deserves personal credit for the development of anti-bribery legislation. His views on the way forward deserve close attention.’ - VINCE CABLE I.B.Tauris & Co. I.B.Tauris Modern Histories China: A Modern History Michael Dillon NEW IN PAPERBACK China's transformation in the last few decades has been perhaps the most remarkable – and most controversial – development in modern history. Barely a century removed from the struggling and outdated Qing Empire, China has managed to reinvent itself on an unprecedented scale: from Empire, to Communist state, to hybrid capitalist superpower. Yet the full implications of China's rapid march to modernity are not widely understood – particularly, the effects of China's meteoric rise on the nation's many ethnic minorities. China: A Modern History is the definitive guide to this complex contemporary phenomenon.

Poland: A Modern History Anita Prazmowska NEW IN PAPERBACK Polish independence following the end of World War I marked a new era for a nation which had endured centuries of foreign partition. But the spirit of Polish nationalism - forged during this long period of external domination - has been frequently at odds with the modernising drives of democracy and communism. How can the ideals of nationalism survive in a modern nationstate? Anita Prazmowska traces this conflict from the emergence of an independent Poland in 1918; through World War II, communism and the democratic victories of Solidarity; to the present day.

Georgia: A Polical History since Independence Stephen Jones Georgia emerged from the fall of the Soviet empire in 1991 with the promise of swift economic and democratic reform. But that promise remains unfulfilled. Economic collapse, secessionist challenges, civil war and the failure to escape the legacy of Soviet rule – culminating in the 2008 war with Russia – characterise a two-decade struggle to establish democratic institutions and consolidate statehood. Here, Stephen Jones critically analyses Georgia's recent political and economic development, illustrating what its 'transition' has meant, not just for the state, but for its citizens as well. An authoritative and commanding exploration of Georgia since independence, this is essential for those interested in the post-Soviet world.

Qatar: A Modern History Allen J. Fromherz NEW IN PAPERBACK What role does Qatar play in the Middle East and how does it differ from the other Gulf states? How has the Al-Thani tribe shaped the history of modern Qatar? And how is a traditional tribal society adapting to its status as a burgeoning economic superpower? Qatar plays a crucial part in the Middle East today. With the second greatest natural gas resources in the region, Qatar's economic clout is considerable. At the same time the Qatar story is replete with paradoxes: the state hosts the AlJazeera media network, an influential expression of Arab nationalism and anti-Americanism, while also hosting the principal US naval base in the region.

In this book, Richard Sakwa examines the rise and fall of Yukos and considers the relationship between Putin’s state and big business during Russia's traumatic shift from the Soviet planned economy to capitalism, as well as Russia's emergence as an energy superpower. The attack on Khodorkovsky had - and continues to have - far-reaching political and economic consequences but it also raises fundamental questions about the quality of freedom in Putin’s Russia as well as in the world at large.

Author

Michael Quentin Morton grew up in Qatar, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi in the 1950s and 1960s. A barrister using his first-hand knowledge of the region, he has written a number of books and articles on the history of oil exploration in the Arabian Peninsula.

Buraimi is an oasis in an otherwise bleak desert. In the early 20th century it shot to notoriety as oil brought the world’s attention to this corner of the Arabian Peninsula. In this exciting account of the conflict Michael Quentin Morton tells the story of how the overwhelming power of oil and the conflicting interests of the declining British Empire and the United States all came to a head shaping the future of the Gulf States. With colourful additions from firsthand accounts, Morton brings a range of historical figures to life, from the American oilmen arriving in steamy Jedda in the 1930s, to the rival sheikhs of the oasis competing for power, wealth and allegiances as well as the great players in world politics: Churchill, Truman and Ibn Saud. This entertaining, yet thoroughly researched book is both a story of decisive conflict in the history of Middle East politics and also of the great changes that the discovery of oil brought to this otherwise desolate land. Praise for the book “This is very well and entertainingly written and covers the subject in a way I’ve not seen before, bringing to it a good deal of primary sources research and weaving it together into a riveting story, with lots of juicy anecdotes.” GERD NONNEMAN, AL QASIMI PROFESSOR OF GULF STUDIES, EXETER UNIVERSITY I.B.Tauris & Co. Author

Conrad Totman is Professor Emeritus in Japanese History, Yale University. Acknowledged as the leading western authority on Japanese environmental history, his books include Japan before Perry, The Green Archipelago, Early Modern Japan, and A History of Japan (3rd edition, 2010)

From the outset, society in Japan has been shaped by its environmental context. The lush green mountainous archipelago of today supports a population of over 127 million people and one of the most advanced economies in the world. How has this come about? At what environmental cost? Conrad Totman, one of the world’s foremost scholars on Japan, here provides a comprehensive and detailed account of the country’s environmental history, from its beginnings to the present day. What makes the Japanese story particularly instructive is that the country’s boundaries are uncommonly clear and the nature, timing, and extent of external influences on its history are unusually identifiable. The Japanese experience, therefore, not only yields important insights into the processes of environmental history, it offers important lessons for the wider environmental history of the planet.

Erik Jensen's impressive diplomatic career after Sarawak, which involved postings and missions around the world culminated in his appointment as an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. He has contributed articles to The Times, The Guardian and The Sunday Telegraph and written several books, including 'The Iban and their Religion' and 'Western Sahara, Anatomy of a Stalemate'.

Once headhunters under the rule of White Rajahs and briefly colonised before independence within Malaysia, the Iban Dayaks of Borneo are one of the world's most extraordinary indigenous tribes, possessing ancient traditions and a unique way of life. As a young man Erik Jensen settled in Sarawak where he lived with the Iban for seven years, learning their language and the varied rites and practices of their lives. In this compelling and beautifully-wrought memoir, Erik Jensen reveals the challenges facing the Iban as they adapt to another century, whilst fighting to preserve their identity and singular place in the world. Haunting, yet hopeful, Where Hornbills Fly opens a window onto a vanishing world and paints a remarkable portrait of this fragile tribe, which continues to survive deep in the heart of Borneo.

JOURNALISM STUDIES

REUTERS INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF JOURNALISM

In an era of globalisation, the comparative study of the practice and nature of journalism on an international level is increasingly important. This new series provides a unique global perspective on the role of the media in the modern world, offering analysis of addressing the key issues facing journalists today. The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ) is a research centre for international comparative journalism based at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford.

In 2011, 74% of British news journalists and 67% of editors were male. Although there have been considerable changes in the prospects for women working in the media in the past few decades, women are still noticeably in the minority in the top journalistic roles, despite making up the majority of journalism students.

In this book, leading academics, commentators and journalists consider the extent to which privacy is warranted for activities outside the scope of their professional lives or when disclosure reveals duplicity related to reputations, brands, images and public personas built and conveyed through media by political and celebrity figures.

The landscape in which journalists now work is substantially different to that of the twentieth century. The rise of digital and social media necessitates a new way of considering the ethical questions facing practicing journalists. Accountability and Open Government James T. Hamilton, Duke University, Nigel Bowles and David Levy, University of Oxford (Eds)

Increasingly governments around the world are experimenting with initiatives in transparency or ‘open government’.These involve a variety of measures including the announcement of more user-friendly government websites, greater access to government data, the extension of freedom of information legislation and broader attempts to involve the public in government decision making. However, the role of the media in these initiatives has not hitherto been examined. This volume analyses the challenges and opportunities presented to journalists as they attempt to hold governments accountable in an era of professed transparency. In examining how transparency and open government initiatives have affected the accountability role of the press in the US and the UK, it also explores how policies in these two countries could change in the future to help journalists hold governments more accountable. 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2013 HARDBACK £52.50 PAPERBACK £19.99 REUTERS SERIES

Description

This new biography of Carroll by leading international authority, Edward Wakeling, presents a fresh appraisal based upon his social circle. Contrary to the claims of many previous authors, Carroll’s circle was not child centred: his correspondence was enormous, numbering almost 100,000 items at the time of his death, and included royalty and many of the leading artists, illustrators, publishers, academics, musicians and composers of the Victorian era.

Embracing the Darkness A Cultural History of Witchcraft JOHN CALLOW

Key Selling Points  The first comprehensive cultural history of the witch to be published in English  Gripping reading for historians, students of culture and religion, and general readers  Interest in witchcraft is exponential: from films, novels and rock songs to exponents of MBS and Wicca

Author

John Callow is a Research Fellow in History at Lancaster University and Director of the Marx Memorial Library in London. He is the author of 'The Making of King James II', of 'King in Exile: James II as Warrior, King and Saint', and with Geoffrey Scarre - of 'Witchcraft and Magic in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Europe'.

As dusk fell on a misty evening in 1521, Martin Luther hiding from his enemies at Wartburg Castle - found himself seemingly tormented by demons hurling walnuts at his bedroom window. In a fit of rage, the great reformer threw at the Devil the inkwell from which he was preparing his colossal translation of the Bible. A belief - like Luther's - in the supernatural, and in black magic, has been central to European cultural life for 3000 years. From the Salem witch trials to the macabre novels of Dennis Wheatley; from the sadistic persecution of eccentric village women to the seductive sorceresses of TV's 'Charmed'; and from Derek Jarman's punk film 'Jubilee' to Ken Russell's 'The Devils', John Callow brings the twilight world of the witch, mage and necromancer to vivid and fascinating life. He takes us into a shadowy landscape where, in an age before modern drugs, the onset of sudden illness was readily explained by malevolent spellcasting. And where dark, winding country lanes could terrify by night, as the hoot of an owl or shriek of a fox became the desolate cries of unseen spirits. Witchcraft has profoundly shaped the western imagination, and endures in the forms of modernday Wicca and paganism. 'Embracing the Darkness' is an enthralling account of this fascinating aspect of the western cultural experience.

The Last Trojan Hero A Cultural History of Virgil's Aeneid

PHILIP HARDIE

Key Selling Points  Alongside Homer, Virgil is the most prominent poet in ancient literature  Author is often called the world’s leading Virgil expert  Significant general sales as well as sales to classicists Description MARCH 2014 £25 256 PAGES 40 BW IN 32PP PLATES

CLASSICAL STUDIES/ HISTORY/ VISUAL CULTURE/ POLITICS Author Philip Hardie is a Senior Research Fellow at Trinity College Cambridge and Honorary Professor of Latin in the University of Cambridge. His many books include Virgil’s Aeneid: Cosmos and Imperium, The Epic Successors of Virgil, Ovid’s Poetics of Illusion, The Cambridge Companion to Ovid and, edited with S Gillespie, The Cambridge Companion to Lucretius.

“I sing of arms and of a man: his fate had made him fugitive: he was the first to journey from the coasts of Troy as far as Italy and the Lavinian shores.” The resonant opening lines of Virgil’s Aeneid rank among the most famous and consistently recited verses to have been passed down to later ages by antiquity. And after the Odyssey and the Iliad, Virgil’s masterpiece is arguably the greatest classical text in the whole of Western literature. This sinuous and richly characterised epic vitally influenced the poetry of Dante, Petrarch and Milton. The doomed love of Dido and Aeneas inspired Purcell, while for T S Eliot Virgil’s poem was ‘the classic of all Europe’. The poet’s stirring tale of a refugee Trojan prince, ‘torn from Libyan waves’ to found a new homeland in Italy, has provided much fertile material for writings on colonialism and for discourses of ethnic and national identity. The Aeneid has even been viewed as a template and a source of philosophical justification for British and American imperialism and adventurism. In his major new book Philip Hardie explores the many remarkable afterlives - ancient, medieval and modern - of the Aeneid in literature, music, politics, the visual arts and film. I.B.Tauris & Co. He was named as one of Granta’s 20 best young British novelists in 2003, until it was discovered he was too old to be young.

Resurrecting 200 years of wars and revolutions, from the Austro-Hungarian Empire via two totalitarianisms to contemporary Britain, and through the remnants of family possessions and old memories, Nick Barlay retraces the footsteps of the vanished. There is the death march of a grandfather, the military manoeuvres of a great uncle, the final weeks and moments of a great grandmother deported to Auschwitz, two boys’ survival of an untold massacre and codenamed spies operating in Cold War Britain. He has been bewitched by Homer and the lands of Homer's epics ever since. As the culmination of a life spent exploring both these lands and the stories by, and connected to, Homer, Freely has created a captivating traveller's guide to Homer's lost world and to his epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, investigating where such places as the Land of the Lotus Eaters are and what it was about the landscapes of Greece and Turkey that so inspired Homer the greatest classical epic poet. With unparalleled knowledge and passion, John Freely guides the traveller through all of those places linked to Homer that can be identified and brings Homer and his world vividly to life, revealing how the Homeric epics continue to echo through the ages in literatuture, art, legend and folklore.

Josh Shoemake read English at Columbia. He has lived in Morocco since 1996. He spent three years in Tangier, where he taught literature and formed close friendships with Paul Bowles, Mohamed Choukri and other local artists and writers. He then served for five years as headmaster of The American School of Marrakech and has published stories about Tangier in The Threepenny Review and elsewhere. A memoir of his time in Morocco is forthcoming.

An edge city, poised at the northernmost tip of Africa, just nine miles across the Strait of Gibraltar from Europe and overlooking both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, Tangier is more than a destination, it is an escape, and the Interzone, as William Burroughs called it, has attracted spies, outlaws, outcasts and writers for centuries – men and women working out at the edge of literary forms, breaking through artistic borders. This outlaw originality is what most astonishes when encountering the literary history of Tangier for the first time. Particularly in the past century, the results were some of the most incendiary and influential books of our time, the most prominent being Burroughs' Naked Lunch and Paul Bowles' The Sheltering Sky. This enthralling book captures the unconventional, multilayered story of literary Tangier and is a must-have for travellers, armchair adventurers and literature buffs, particularly aficionados of the Beat generation writers and poets who made the city their home. Praise for the book: "An excellent book... and more lively than its predecessors. Time is compressed to whimsical effect, somewhat reminiscent of Max Beerbohm's Savonarola Brown..." - ROBERT IRWIN, TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT

Wim Wenders is a German film director, photographer, playwright and writer. His internationally renowned films include Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire, Until the End of the World, Faraway and Buena Vista Social Club. He teaches film as a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Mary Zournazi is an Australian writer and philosopher. She teaches in the sociology program at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. She is the author of several books, including Hope - New Philosophies for Change (Routledge, 2003).

Inventing Peace revolves around the question of how we look at the world, but do not see it when there is so much war, injustice, suffering and violence. What are the ethical and moral consequences of looking, but not seeing, and, most of all, what has become of the notion of peace in all this? In the form of a written dialogue, Wim Wenders and Mary Zournazi consider this question as one of the fundamental issues of our times as well as the need to reinvent a visual and moral language for peace. Inspired by various cinematic, philosophical, literary and artistic examples, Wenders and Zournazi reflect on the need for a change of perception in the everyday as well as in the creation of images. In its unique style and method, Inventing Peace demonstrates an approach to peace through sacred, ethical and spiritual means, to provide an alternative to the inhumanity of war and violence. Their book might help to make peace visible and tangible in new and unforeseen ways. Praise for the book

Reading this book brings a sense of enormous privilege – the privilege of overhearing a conversation between two voices of profound seriousness and imagination. The peace they talk about is neither a matter of problem-solving nor a dream of immobile quiet; it is the remaking of the world by patient looking, educated in compassion and self-awareness. We learn something essential of what art is (not least the art of the film-maker) and of how it is the necessary nourishment for a humane public life. DR ROWAN WILLIAMS, FORMER ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY Not to be missed: his first encounter with the films of Yasujiro Ozu, his vivid account of a train journey through Australia, and his heartbreaking experiences in Africa while working on a documentary about raped and battered women. Alana Jelinek is AHRC fellow at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge.

Art is not political action. Art is not education. Art does not exist to make the world a better place. Art disrupts and resists the status quo and if it fails in this prime objective it only serves to deaden a disenfranchised society further. Alana Jelinek returns to the question ‘what is art?’, retelling the history of art practice and exposing the ways in which neoliberal norms and values have seeped into every aspect of our lives. From the author’s unique perspective as a practicing artist and theoretician, This Is Not Art offers a new way of understanding and practicing art - as the embodiment of power and agency within us, the possibility of thinking and acting differently, of finding new stories to tell.

Jai McKenzie is an artist and academic based between Berlin and Sydney.

Description

Light and Photomedia proposes that, regardless of technological change, the history and future of photomedia are essentially connected to light: it is a fundamental property of photomedia, binding with space and time to form and inform new, explicitly light-based structures and experiences Jai McKenzie identifies light-space-time structures throughout the history of photomedia, from the early image machines through analogue and digital image machines to the present day. She proposes that they will continue to develop in the future, and takes us to future image machines of the year 2039. With the use of the theories of Paul Virilio, Jean Baudrillard and Vilém Flusser, featuring artists including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Nam June Paik, Yves Klein, Eadweard Muybridge, Martha Rosler, Cindy Sherman and Michael Snow, as well as photographic images, Light and Photomedia places the reader in a new history and future which, although mostly overlooked by the canon of photomedia theory, is an essential line of enquiry for contemporary thinking and dialogue in photography. What people wear matters. Copiously illustrated, this book is the story of what people on both sides wore on the front line and on the home front through the seismic years of World War I. Nina Edwards ,reveals fresh aspects of the war through the prism of the smallest details of personal dress, of clothes, hair and accessories, both in uniform and civilian wear. She explores how, during a period of extraordinary upheaval and rapid change, a particular preference for a type of razor blade or perfume, say, or the just-so adjustment to the tilt of a hat, offer insights into the individual experience of men, women and children during the course of World War I.

In the contested sphere of gastronomy divided between the golden arches of McDonalds and the prized stars of Michelin where personal identity is expressed through a frenetic quest for socially-approved tastes and distinctions, where, when, how and with whom we eat has become just as fundamental in defining who we are. In this follow-on to her classic 1989 work Dining Out: A Sociology of Modern Manners, Joanne Finkelstein takes a fragment of social life, dining out in restaurants, and uses it to examine the nature and meaning of manners and social relations in the modern world. From the social solitude of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks to the burgeoning phenomenon of the celebrity chef, Joanne Finkelstein demonstrates how eating in public has become a complex cultural and consumerist transaction exhibited for the critical gaze of the other, and argues that in our atomised society, our most voracious appetites and deepest anxieties are enacted in the restaurants where we serve up our splintered selves for public consumption.
