Author

Kerry Brown is the Director of the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney and former head of the Asia Programme at Chatham House. He writes regularly for the Times Literary Supplement and the Guardian amongst others, as well as for many international and Chinese media outlets. He is the author of Contemporary China (2012), Friends and Enemies: The Past, Present and Future of the Communist Party of China (with Will Hutton, 2009) and Struggling Giant: China in the 21st Century (with Jonathan Fenby, 2007).

China has become the powerhouse of the world economy and home to 1 in 5 of the world’s population, yet we know almost nothing of the people who lead it. How does one become the leader of the world’s newest superpower? And who holds the real power in the Chinese system? In The New Dragons, the noted China expert Kerry Brown journeys deep into the heart of the secretive Communist Party. China’s system might have its roots in peasant rebellion but it is now firmly under the control of a power-conscious Beijing elite, almost half of whose members are related directly to former senior Party leaders. Brown reveals the intrigue, scandal and murder surrounding the internal battle raging between two China’s: one founded by Mao on Communist principles, and a modern China in which ‘to get rich is glorious’. At the centre of it all sits the latest Party Secretary, Xi Jinping - the son of a revolutionary, with links both to big business and to the People’s Liberation Army. His rise to power is symbolic of the new dragons leading the world’s next superpower.

GENTLEMAN SPY The Extraordinary Story of SOE Agent Robert de la Rochefoucauld

CAROLYN GOSSAGE Key Selling Points  Fascinating tale – the full story of which has not appeared in English previously  Includes first-hand interviews and previously unpublished photographs  Essential reading for military history buffs and fans of World War II intelligence Description

HISTORY / WORLD WAR II Author

Carolyn Gossage is an historian and author of numerous publications, including The Accidental Captives: The Story of Seven Women Alone in Nazi Germany (I.B.Tauris); Greatcoats & Glamour Boots: Canadian Women in Uniform 1939-45 and Forgotten Graces: Travel Sketchbooks of a Victorian Gentlewoman.

Captured twice by the Nazis and successfully escaping from his own execution, Count Robert de la Rochefoucauld was one of the most remarkable SOE agents of World War II. The stories of his exploits read like the most imaginative works of spy fiction. After receiving sabotage and commando training in Britain, Rochefoucauld was twice parachuted into occupied France. On one trip, he killed a German guard, stole the guard’s uniform in order to pose as a Nazi and made his escape – shooting two more Germans in the process. Ever resourceful, he made use of a bizarre collection of objects in the service of sabotage and escape, including loaves of bread, a stolen Nazi limousine, the leg of a table, a bicycle and a nun's habit, not to mention the more established accoutrements of espionage such as parachutes, explosives and a submarine. The remarkable stories of Rochefoucauld’s wartime exploits make for fascinating reading – proving that fact is often stranger than fiction.

On 27th May 1977, a small demonstration against the MPLA, the ruling party of Angola – led to the slaughter of many hundreds, if not thousands, of people. These dreadful reprisals are little talked of in Angola today – and virtually unknown outside the country. In this book journalist, Lara Pawson, tracks down the story of what really happened in the aftermath of that fateful day. In a series of vivid encounters, she talks to eyewitnesses, victims and even perpetrators of the violent and confusing events of this fateful day and the following weeks and months. From London to Lisbon to Luanda, she meets those who continue to live in the shadow of the appalling events of 40 years ago and who – in most cases – have been too afraid to speak about them before. As well as shedding light on the events of 1977, this book contributes to a deeper understanding of modern Angola – its people and its politics; past, present and future.

Lara Pawson was a BBC World Service Correspondent in Africa from 1997-2007 covering events internationally. From 19982000 she was stationed in Angola, reporting on the ongoing Angolan Civil War and she has returned there multiple times since. She currently works as a freelance journalist and lives in London.

NOVEMBER 2014 PAPERBACK £12.99 256 PAGES 32 BW INTEGARTED, 16 COLOUR IN 8PP BW PLATES Author Jonathan Fenby has been Paris Bureau Chief of Reuters, Home Editor of the Independent, Deputy Editor of The Guardian, Editor of the Observer and, during the handover of Hong Kong, editor of the South China Morning Post. Fenby was named a CBE in 2000 and a Chevalier of the French Order of Merit in 1991. He is the author of Tiger Head, Snake Tails, The Penguin History of Modern China, The History of Modern China and Generalissimo, among many others.

From 221 BC - when Shi Huangdi, First Emperor and founding father of Chinese imperial history, unified a large part of the Han Chinese homeland - until 1911, when imperial China collapsed in revolutionary chaos, China was ruled by a succession of powerful imperial dynasties. The Dragon Throne tells their rich, complex and often turbulent story, from the inception of the Qin dynasty to the fall of the Manchu in the early 20th century. China's imperial dynasties display a recurring pattern of birth, growth, prosperity and collapse due to external pressures. A number of powerful emperors left a particularly strong imprint on this troubled history, whether as conquerors, consolidators, tyrants, reformers or reactionaries. At the heart of The Dragon Throne are vivid profiles of such emperors as Shi Huangdi, who began the construction of the Great Wall; Han Wudi, the Han emperor who developed China as a centralized Confucian state; Kublai Khan, the first emperor of the Mongol Yuan dynasty, and Hongwu, the founder of the Ming dynasty. Patrick Marnham is a journalist and author, whose books include So Far from God (winner of the Thomas Cook Prize), The Man who Wasn't Maigret (winner of the Marsh Prize for Biography and an Edgar Allen Poe finalist), Dreaming with his Eyes Open: A Life of Diego Rivera and Road to Katmandu (Tauris Parke Paperbacks). He has been Paris correspondent for The Independent, a reporter for Private Eye and Literary Editor of The Spectator. He lives in Paris.

Not long after 2:00 p.m. on June 21, 1943, eight men met in secret at a doctor’s house in Lyon. They represented the warring factions of the French Resistance and had been summoned by General de Gaulle’s new envoy, a man most of them knew simply as “Max.” Minutes after the last man entered the house, the Gestapo broke in, led by Klaus Barbie, the infamous “Butcher of Lyon.” The fate awaiting Barbie’s prisoners was torture, deportation, and death. “Max” was tortured sadistically but never broke: he took his many secrets to his grave. In that moment, the legend of Jean Moulin was born. Who was this enigmatic hero, a man as skilled in deception as he was in acts of heroism? Resistance and Betrayal tells for the first time in English the epic story of France’s greatest war hero, a Schindler-like character of ambiguous motivation. Told with the drama and suspense of the best espionage fiction, Resistance and Betrayal brings to life the dark and duplicitous world of the French Resistance and offers a startling conclusion to one of the great unsolved mysteries of the Second World War. Praise for Patrick Marnham “Enthralling and intelligent, a masterly exploration of the sinister labyrinth that was wartime France. . . EGYPT A Modern History

STEPHANIE BOYLE Key Selling Points   

Comprehensive history of modern Egypt from the Battle of the Nile to the Arab Spring Features key figures such as Napoleon, Nasser and Mubarak First book to consider Arab Spring in the context of Egypt’s recent history

DECEMBER 2014 HARDCOVER £29.50 304 PAGES 16 BW INTEGRATED IMAGES

Author Stephanie Boyle is Assistant Professor of History at Albright College. She holds a PhD from Northeastern University.

Description In January 2011, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Cairo to end the longest-running dictatorship in Egypt’s modern and ancient history. The history of modern Egypt is marked by such uprisings. Periodically, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, Egyptians have gathered together in protest to assert their dissatisfaction with their economic and social position, as they watched western Europeans reap the rewards of their hard earned labour, the Suez Canal. This culture of protest would mark Egypt’s modern history. In this book, Stephanie Boyle traces the political, social and cultural relationship between Egypt’s people and its government and shows that Egypt’s position as a leading player in the Arab world resulted from an uneven power relationship with Europe, local political corruption and an indigenous response rooted in class conflict. In doing so, she provides a clear and comprehensive history of modern Egypt – from Napoleon to the Arab Spring, via the British Occupation, Nasser, Mubarak – to reveal what became of the ‘land of the pharaohs’ in the modern world.

HISTORY / BALKANS /EUROPEAN HISTORY Author

Marcus Tanner is an author and journalist, specialising in Central and Eastern Europe. He was The Independent’s Balkan correspondent from 1988 to 1994 and was subsequently Assistant Foreign Editor. He is the author of Croatia: A Nation Forged in War; The Raven King: Matthias Corvinus and the Fate of His Lost Library; The Last of the Celts and Ireland's Holy Wars: The Struggle for a Nation's Soul 1500-2000 (all Yale University Press)

In 1900, at the age of 37, Durham set sail for the Balkans for the first time, a trip which changed the course of her life. Her experiences kindled a profound love of the region which saw her return frequently in the following decades. She became a confidante of the King of Montenegro, ran a hospital in Macedonia and, following the outbreak of the First Balkan War in 1912, became one of the world’s first female war correspondents. Her popularity in the region earned her the affectionate title ‘Queen of the Mountains’ and she is fondly remembered in Albania until this day. Marcus Tanner here tells the fascinating story of Durham’s relationship with the Balkans, painting a vivid portrait of a remarkable, if sometimes formidable, woman. Praise for Marcus Tanner "Croatia: A Nation Forged in War is a much-needed introduction to this southern Slavic country . . . fascinating and well-documented. . . . THE VISION OF RUMI Revealing the Masnavi, Persia’s Great Masterpiece

ALAN WILLIAMS Key Selling Points  Rumi is a phenomenon, and sells to all kinds of readerships  Alan Williams is a titan in Rumi studies as well as Persian history and literature more broadly  Bold, daring, controversial new approach to understanding Rumi’s greatest poetic work Description

The Masnavi is the six-volume masterpiece created by one of the world’s greatest poetic geniuses, Jalaluddin Rumi (12071273). It is perhaps the single most influential piece of mystical writing ever conceived. Though the Persian poet Rumi is now hugely popular in the West, his most famous oeuvre still remains enigmatic.

MAY 2014 HARDBACK

£25 224 PAGES RELIGION/ MIDDLE EAST STUDIES/ HISTORY/ LITERARY STUDIES Author

Alan Williams is Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Religion at the University of Manchester. His previous publications include The Zoroastrian Myth of Migration from Iran and Settlement in the Indian Diaspora (Brill, 2009, joint winner of the 2010 Ehsan Yarshater Book Award in Ancient Iranian Studies), Parsis in India and the Diaspora (Routledge, co-written with John Hinnells, 2008) and Jalaluddin Rumi: Spiritual Verses (Penguin, 2006).

Alan Williams here offers a novel approach to reading and understanding this great jewel of world literature. Recognizing that all medieval and modern attempts to ‘explain’ the Masnavi have been based on an examination of its teachings, Williams shows that those who have tried to find the key to its message in its separate themes have had little success. He argues that the work can only be fully comprehended if the ‘meaning’ of the text is understood to lie in the poetry itself, in the language. The closely woven tapestry cannot be unwoven into prosaic explanation without losing the whole. The visionary poetic metaphors and devices are not the container for the teachings: they are the teachings. This revelatory unlocking enables Rumi’s voice and purpose to become fully transparent.

First book to address the ways in which photography as an aesthetic form speaks to the social issues around waste Major author Richly illustrated in colour and black and white with examples of different photographers work, both historical and contemporary

Description

Since van Gogh declared of a garbage can, ‘For an artist, it’s a paradise’, waste has been an object of fascination for a range of artistic fields. Photography - the documentary medium par excellence - in particular shares a commonality with waste, photography questioning the relation of transience to permanence, whilst waste reveals the temporalities of what was, what is no more, what remains, what we wish to forget and what cannot be forgotten. This exciting volume by a leading cultural geographer explores the tradition of photography in addressing the detritus of modern life. How does waste inform photographic aesthetics and how does photography bring waste into imaginative focus? How do photographs and photographers, contemporary and historic, refract changing social definitions of waste? What do photographs tell us about waste and modernity? What do the wastescapes of society reveal about us? Richly illustrated with both historical and contemporary photographic images, Wastescapes is an engaging and original work on a key aspect of modern life.

Contributor to television and radio programmes including BBC News, Faking It, Blast, Nightwaves and the World Service. Rose has also worked as an Associate Producer for the BBC's Arts Development Programme.

Description

Despite generations of art historians reading dark despair into the brushwork of Rothko’s mural series or eulogizing sublime terribilità in Michaelangelo’s artistry in the Sistine Chapel, Brushed With Fame reveals that significant amounts of the work were, in fact, undertaken by the artists’ assistants. From Rembrandt and Rubens to Hirst and Koons, Rose Aidin throws light on the practices of some of our foremost cultural icons. Much more than entertaining anecdote, each example aims to deepen understanding of the artist and his or her output, raising important issues about the meaning of art and authenticity. The book also charts art's relationship to consumerism and the current art-world obsession with branding, endorsement and celebrity. Rose Aidin's style is journalistic and readable and the book is a fascinating study for the art student and general gallery goer alike.

New York is a centre of creative production for an exciting, emerging generation of women artists. Their work investigates themes such as the body as medium and subject matter; the deconstruction of the existing patriarchal order of the art world; the appropriation of earlier art historical references; and the use of so-called abject and everyday materials. New York, New Wave investigates the relevance of earlier feminist practice for this ‘new’ generation, asking: Does gender difference still play a role in today’s practice? How can younger women artists embrace a radical political ideology and yet remain market friendly? How far have these artists diverged from the established feminist ‘tradition’? Artists discussed include: Firelei Baez, EV Day, Ruby LaToya Fraser, Diana Al-Hadid, K8 Hardy, Valerie Hegarty, Cindy Hinant, Dawn Kasper, Anya Kielar, Liz Magic Laser, Narcissister, Alix Pearlstein, Aurel Schmidt, AL Steiner and W.A.G.E.

COMMON GESTURES, CLASS ACTS Young British Artists in Retrospect

ALISON ROWLEY

Key Selling Points  First historical-critical analysis of the YBAs as a movement  Relationship between art, class and ideology newly relevant  Key text for students

Description

The ‘Young British Artists’ have often been written off as sensationalists, devotees of the cult of celebrity, charlatans and ‘con’ artists wanting to shock and scam the public. Twenty years after its emergence in the 1990s, sustained critical and historical analysis of the art of the ‘YBA’ group has been rare.

CONTEMPORARY ART ART HISTORY ART THEORY Author

Common Gestures, Class Acts aims to redress this, revealing how the practices and productions of the YBAs were rooted in working-class practices and discourses too uncomfortable for established critical discourse on contemporary art. Alison Rowley looks closely at artworks by Sarah Lucas, Richard Billingham and Tracey Emin and proposes that neglected histories of British life since World War II reemerge within them. In this book, ‘Thatcher’s Artists’ and their position at the intersection of class, art and history are shown to be newly relevant in the light of the present government’s rhetoric of the ‘big society’ and recently heightened class tensions.

Jai McKenzie is an artist and academic based between Berlin and Sydney.

Description

Light and Photomedia proposes that, regardless of technological change, the history and future of photomedia are essentially connected to light: it is a fundamental property of photomedia, binding with space and time to form and inform new, explicitly light-based structures and experiences Jai McKenzie identifies light-space-time structures throughout the history of photomedia, from the early image machines through analogue and digital image machines to the present day. She proposes that they will continue to develop in the future, and takes us to future image machines of the year 2039. With the use of the theories of Paul Virilio, Jean Baudrillard and Vilém Flusser, featuring artists including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Nam June Paik, Yves Klein, Eadweard Muybridge, Martha Rosler, Cindy Sherman and Michael Snow, as well as photographic images, Light and Photomedia places the reader in a new history and future which, although mostly overlooked by the canon of photomedia theory, is an essential line of enquiry for contemporary thinking and dialogue in photography. Description

The eponymous heroine of this book is Dorothy, from Kansas, USA. Not in her capacity as a retrospective star vehicle for Judy Garland, but as a child who finds herself on a long journey both towards and away from a place called home, and as a protagonist who has provided an archetypal touchstone in the cinematic imaginary for the migrant child. Taking its cue from Salman Rushdie’s comments on Dorothy and home: ‘the homes we make, or the homes that are made for us, in Oz; which is anywhere and everywhere’, this book makes the case for the child as a guide to the new ontologies of cinema. In this groundbreaking work, distinguished film scholar Stephanie Hemelryk Donald offers a fresh approach, not only to world cinema, but also to thinking about migration and diasporas - through the figure of the migrant child. Hemelryk Donald travels across the countries of world cinema, from Oz to England, with this Dorothy-like child as protagonist, exploring childhood in the cinematic imagination, illuminating the politics and geography of migration, issues of mobility, and cosmopolitanism.
