Renaissance Woman Gaia Servadio
NEW in paperback
The Renaissance, argues Servadio, created a new vision of womanhood and indeed a ‘New Woman’. She dates the birth of this revolutionary movement to the invention of the printing press in 1456, which made books – and hence education – available to women. Central to her story are the lives of such as Vittoria Colonna, Michelangel’s lover, Tullia d’Aragona, poet and courtesan, and French poet Louise Labé, who fought in battle in male clothes. They are placed centre stage to the Renaissance’s power plays, paintings and architecture, courtesans and popes, music and manners, fashion, food, cosmetics, changing societies and the language of poetry and symbols. 288 pages 216 x 134 mm August 2015 9781784532963 Paperback £11.99 / $19.50

Venice
The Western Tradition G.R. Evans
A Literary Guide for Travellers
University of Cambridge
Marie-José Gransard
Venice is one of the most breathtaking cities in the world. A floating labyrinth; a cultural jewel, slowly sinking into the lagoon from which it rose; tourist-trap, irresistible muse. From its earliest beginings, Venice has been a magnetic centre of trade and culture, wealth and power and has acted as a crossroads for an array of religious pilgrims and refugees, diplomats, crusading armies and merchants. Later, its fabled beauty and reputation as a haven for freedom of expression seduced some of the most celebrated figures in history: artists such as Da Vinci, Bellini and Turner; writers Dickens, Byron and Kafka and composers Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. In this, the first literary guide to Venice, the author uncovers the city’s myriad secrets, revealing how every floating palace, gilded church and bustling square is imbued with the lives and creations of those who were inspired by the city, which still echoes with their voices.

Greece, the Decade at War
NEW
Occupation, Resistance and Civil War David Brewer NEW
A Witness to Weimar Franz Hessel
During the 1940s Greece was torn apart, first by World War II and then again by Civil War. The German occupation was intensely brutal. Children starved on the streets. Acts of resistance were met with vicious reprisals. When Greece was finally freed from Nazi rule in 1944, the fractured nation became engulfed in civil war, as conflict flared between the British and American-sponsored government and communist-led rebels.Acclaimed historian of Greece, Brewer investigates this tumultuous decade in Greece’s modern history, providing a compelling military and political history.

The Life and Death of Jean Moulin, Legend of the French Resistance
Edited by Kevin Morrow
Patrick Marnham
Who was the enigmatic Jean Moulin, a man as skilled in deception as he was in acts of heroism? The memory of this French Resistance hero, who was betrayed to the Gestapo and tortured to death by Klaus Barbie, the infamous ‘Butcher of Lyon’, is revered alongside that of Voltaire and Victor Hugo. But Moulin’s story is full of unanswered questions and the truth of his life is far more complicated than the legend. Patrick Marnham, winner of the Marsh Prize for Biography, thrillingly tells the epic story of France’s greatest war hero, bringing to light the shadowy and deceitful world of the French Resistance and offers a shocking conclusion to one of the great unsolved mysteries of World War II.

The Longest Day
The Nazi Holocaust
The D-Day Story, June 6th, 1944 NEW in paperback Cornelius Ryan
Its History and Meaning Ronnie S. Landau Revised Edition The Nazi Holocaust is one of the most momentous events in human history.Yet, it remains on many levels a baffling and unfathomable mystery. By shunning simplistic ‘explanations’ Ronnie Landau has set out, in a clear, thought-provoking and enlightened fashion, to mediate betweeen this vast, often unapproachable subject and the reader who wrestles with its meaning. Intended both for the general reader and for students and academics, this work is an important breakthrough in the struggle to perpetuate the memory of a tragedy which the world is all too ready to forget. 384 pages 198 x 126 mm October 2015 9781780769714 Paperback £14.99 / $24.50

Ukrainian Partisan Forces on the Eastern Front Alexander Gogun
6 June, 1944. D-Day. Over sixty years on, what is it about the events of D-Day that remain so compelling? One of the defining battles of the war, this is the story of D-Day, told through the voices of over 1,000 survivors – from high-ranking officers, to the paratroopers who landed in Normandy before dawn, the infantry who struggled ashore and the German troops who defended the coast. 352 pages 198 x 126 mm September 2015 9781784533090 Paperback £12.99 /

Killing the Enemy
NEW
SOE Assassination Operations in World War II Adam Leong Kok Wey In World War II, the British formed the Special Operations Executive (SOE), to support resistance organisations in occupied Europe. It also engaged in ‘targeted killing’ – the assassination of political and military leaders. Its activities are now gaining attention as a forerunner to today’s ‘extra-legal’ killings of wartime enemies in foreign territory. Leong’s work evaluates the effectiveness of political assassination in wartime using four specific examples, including the failed attempt to assassinate Rommel. 272 pages 216 x 134 mm September 2015 9781784530723 Hardback £62.00 / $99.00

The Secret Life of the Georgian Garden
NEW
Denis Judd New York University in London
Beautiful Objects and Agreeable Retreats Kate Felus NEW
The Georgian landscape garden has been hailed as the greatest British contribution to European Art, It has traditionally been seen as a beautiful composition and perhaps a little sterile. But scratch below the surface things become a lot less serene. This book about the private life of the Georgian garden reveals how by the 18th Century there was a desire to escape the busy country house, and how these gardens evolved aesthetically, to cater for escape and solitude as well as food, drink, music and fireworks. Its publication coincides with the tercentenary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, arguably Britain’s greatest ever landscape gardener, putting Brown’s work into its social context.

Aspects of British Imperialism Bernard Porter
What the Empire Wasn’t
University of Newcastle
Bernard Porter NEW University of Newcastle The British Empire is often misunderstood. Judgments of it differ widely – from a ‘great’ enterprise, spreading ‘civilisation’ through the world; to the blame for most of the world’s ills today, including the problems of the Middle East. Porter argues that many of these judgments arise from some fundamental misreadings of the nature, causes and effects of British imperialism, which was a more complex, ambivalent and in some ways accidental phenomenon than it is often taken to be. He aims to clear away many of the misconceptions that surround the story of the British Empire; and to point some ways to a more accurate assessment of it. He addresses the connections of imperialism with capitalism, racism and British domestic culture, and reflects on the modern repercussions of both the Empire itself, and its myths.

Two Centuries in the Middle East
Peter Mangold University of Oxford NEW The Middle East been one of the most conflicted regions in the world for nearly 100 years. Why? Peter Mangold here shows that the British are at least partly responsible for today’s troubles. It was the British who created the Sheikhdoms of the Gulf. It was the British who fired up the Arab Revolt of 1916, and it was the British who, following World War I, created two new states – Iraq and Transjordan, with no regard for the tribal organisation and dynamics of the region. And it was the declaration of a British foreign secretary, Sir Arthur Balfour, eventually led to the creation of Israel and the never ending Arab-Israeli Crisis. In tracing the history of Britain’s relationship with the Middle East from the Napoleonic Wars to the present day, Mangold reveals how Britain’s influence in the Middle East sowed the seeds for today’s discontent. 384 pages 226 x 155 mm February 2016 9781784531942 Hardback £25.00 / $45.00

The Outsider David Clarke Shiels
David Lloyd George left a profound political legacy. He is best known as the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in WWI, but his contribution to domestic politics was similarly impressive. He introduced pensions and national insurance and extended the vote to women. Yet Lloyd George was haunted by his flaws.Vain, cruel, capricious and dishonest, at times his notoriously corrupt nature threatened to damage the British political system. This book provides a unique new perspective on one of the most talented – but also one of the most flawed – of British Prime Ministers.

Forever England

The Countryside at War 1914-1918 Caroline Dakers, Central St. Martins When war broke out in 1914, there was no shortage of volunteers ready to lay down their lives for England. Dakers explores exactly what ‘England’ meant to those who fought, died, survived. She suggests that, with a little subliminal help from propaganda, the British volunteer felt that he was fighting for ‘old England’ – village, meadow and carthorse. Drawing on a wide range of unpublished papers and family archives, Dakers recreates the world of the countryside at war, through chapters on agriculture, the manor house, vicarage, school and farm. This is the most complete picture yet of the impact of WWI on rural England. 240 pages 216 x 134 mm December 2015 9781784534844 Paperback £10.99 / $18.00

C. Brad Faught
Horatio Herbert Kitchener, Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850-1916) is one of the most important figures in the history of the British Empire. Beginning as Royal Engineer in the 1870s he would end his career over forty years later as Secretary of State for War – the iconic figure of World War I recruitment posters. In between he became both the most famous British soldier in the world during the peak period of European imperialism, and a celebrated and sometimes controversial pro-consul and administrator. At his death in 1916 he had literally become the ‘face’ of the British war effort. This new biography offers a timely and modern evaluation of a still disputed and complex military man of empire.

Leo Amery and the British Empire in the Age of Churchill Wm. Roger Louis, University of Texas at Austin Leo Amery was a leading British Conservative politician and imperialist who played a pivotal role in the fall of Neville Chamberlain and the rise of Winston Churchill. In this highly-regarded account of Amery’s career, the distinguished historian Wm. Roger Louis portrays his part in those great events as well as in the evolution of the British Empire and Commonwealth. Louis here traces the close association of Amery and Churchill from their school days at Harrow to the clashes over India that almost destroyed their friendship.
Unique in its comprehensive treatment of how and why the British acted as they did during the period in which the British Empire changed the world – expertly marshalling the voluminous, contradictory and revealing records of the policy-makers in the British government. 544 pages 216 x 134 mm May 2016 9781784535834 Hardback £29.95 / $55.00

Edward Bujak NEW University of Evansville, Indiana The Royal Flying Corps, later the Royal Air Force, was formed in 1912 and went to war in 1914 where it played a vital role supporting the British Expeditionary Force as ‘air cavalry’, establishing air superiority over the Imperial German Air Force. Bujak here combines the history of the air war with a social and cultural history. The RFC was originally dominated by the landed elite, and its pilots were regarded as ‘knights of the air’. Bujak shows how, within the circle of the RFC, the class divide disappeared – absorbed by common purpose, technical expertise and by an influx of pilots from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He thus provides an original and unusual take on the air war in World War I, combining military, social and cultural history.
In the network of Nazi camps across Europe, prisoner of war camps were often located next to the camps for Jews and Slavs. The majority of PoWs were aware of the camps, but their testimony has never been fully published. Here, using accounts held by the Holocaust Educational Trust, Wallis rewrites the history of British prisoners and the Holocaust during WWII.

The Historian Blair Worden (Ed)
Hugh Trevor-Roper was one of the most gifted historians of the 20th Century. His scholarly interests ranged widely – from the Puritan Revolution to the Scottish Enlightenment. Yet he was also fascinated by the events of his own lifetime and wrote widely on issues of espionage and intelligence, as well as maintaining a fascination with the workings and personalities of Nazi Germany. In this volume, a variety of contributors – many of whom knew him personally – engage with his scholarship and analyse his greatest achievements, covering the full range of Trevor-Roper’s interests. 352 Pages 226 x 155 mm january 2016 9781784531249 Hardback £25.00 / $50/00

James Klugmann is a shadowy figure in the legendary history of the Cambridge spies. As mentor and friend to Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess and others, Klugmann recruited promising students deemed ripe for conversion to the communist cause, as detailed in his MI5 file and Soviet intelligence files in Moscow. Only recently released, these files reveal his part in the recruitment of John Cairncross, the so-called ‘fifth man’, as well as his pivotal war-time role in the Special Operations Executive in shifting Churchill and the allies to support Tito and the communist Partisans in Yugoslavia. Andrews reveals Klugmann’s story in full for the first time, uncovering the motivations, conflicts and illusions of those drawn into the world of communism and the sacrifices they made. 288 pages 226 x 155 mm September 2015 9781784531669 Hardback £20.00 / $27.95

Ernest Hemingway

Anthony Burgess
New Foreword by Patrick Marnham Ernest Hemingway was ‘a man who lived it up to write it down’ and his life became the root from which his novels grew. But, by the 1940s, the darkness of his alcoholism and violent rages began to weigh heavily. Hemingway had become the patriarch of American literature but he was plagued by demons and a disenchantment with life. In this unflinching portrait,Anthony Burgess explores Hemingway’s fatal contradictions. He reveals a man who was as much a creation as his books yet who, even at his worst, reminds us that to engage literature one has first to engage life. 160 pages 198 x 126 mm August 2015 9781784531188 Paperback £9.99 / $14.95 Tauris Parke Paperbcks

The Tensions between Britain and America Ian McLaine
The Vietnam War lasted 20 years. An attempt to stem the spread of Soviet/Chinese influence, the conflict in practice created a chaotic state torn apart by espionage, terrorism and guerilla warfare. American troops became embroiled in jungle warfare and intelligence about the enemy became crucial. Dimitrakis uncovers this battle for knowledge through newly declassified material. In doing so he enhances our understanding of the war that came to define its era.

Reagan
NEW
Iwan Morgan University College London Ronald Reagan is one of the most important – and arguably most successful – presidents in modern American history. He is broadly credited with renewing American prosperity in the wake of the most miserable economic era since the 1930s, laying the foundations for Cold War victory and doing much to bring about the late 20th Century shift to the right in American politics. In this book, Morgan presents the first thoroughly-researched biography of Reagan, based on original materials and first-hand interviews. He plots a chronological path through Reagan’s life beginning with his childhood and early years in Illinois, through his Hollywood career, his emergent Republicanism and his election as governor of California, before acceding to the presidency in 1981. In office, Morgan assesses Reagan’s economic and foreign policies, as well as his idealisation of the constitution and his near-impeachment over the IranContra affair. 320 pages 228 x 155 mm June 2016 9781780767475 Hardback £20.00 / $29.95

Selling Ronald Reagan The Emergence of a President NEW Gerard DeGroot, University of St Andrews Running for the governorship of California in 1966, Ronald Reagan’s hard-line republican campaign was faltering. Instead, Reagan’s team taught him to use his natural ease in front of the camera and media-friendly charisma. In doing so Reagan and his team created the first ‘modern’ politician. They won the California governorship by a landslide, and went on to do the same in the US presidential elections. This is the untold story of Reagan’s California campaign, which was to change the face of American politics, and sheds new light on one of the titans of modern American history. 320 Pages 216 x 135 mm September 2015 9781780768281 Hardback £20.00 / $28.00

John Hopkins
“Now moving swiftly southwards through thorn and cactus country – cattle country – towards real heat and, perhaps, renewed creativity.” While writing a novel set in South America, John Hopkins travelled back there to “reacquaint himself with the scene”. In 1972-3, he travelled by train, bus and boat from Mexico City to the centre of the continent, through Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua and on to Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina. Hopkins travelled slowly, deliberately, savouring every experience along the way. But the journey was fraught with his angst-ridden strivings to write his novel and with the troubled love he had for Madeleine, his travelling companion. In these heat-scorched, tequila-infused pages, Hopkins paints a sultry, exquisite portrait of South America and in so doing masters an art that he believed would forever elude him. 192 pages 198 x 126 mm May 2016 9781780768250 Paperback £11.99 / $18.00 Tauris Parke Paperbacks

A Modern History Jill Hedges
The Hudson’s Bay Company and Territorial Endeavour in Western Canada Stephen Royle
In the early 20th Century, Argentina possessed one of the world’s most prosperous economies, yet since then has suffered a series of boom-and-bust cycles that have seen it fall well below its regional neighbours. At the same time, Argentina has failed to create a post-independence national identity and its political and social history has been marked by frictions, violence and a series of military coups d’état. Hedges analyses the modern history of Argentina from the 1853 constitution until the present day, highlighting how the political factionalism, the weakness of political institutions and economic dependence on foreign capital has contributed to its political instability and economic fluctuation. 336 pages 228 x 155mm June 2015 9781784531065 Paperback £17.99 / $25.00 e ebook available

Iran is rarely out of the media spotlight. Whether because of its nuclear ambitions, its confrontation with the US or the provocative rhetoric of its leadership, Iran demands attention. In this riveting book, Beeman pries open the complex and multifaceted society that makes up Iran. Sweeping through its history, Beeman seeks to show how Iranian identity has been forged. Although Iran has been profoundly influenced by the experience of many invasions, its natural identity is firmly anchored in its deeply subtle literary and artistic heritage producing the most ethnically diverse yet culturally united country in the Middle East. Thoughtful, and informative, Beeman’s book explains this dazzling and much misunderstood country with verve and style.

This book explains how Iran was to acquire one of its defining characteristics: its Shi’ism. Under the Safavids (1501-1736 CE), Persia adopted Shi’ism as its official religion. Abisaab explains how and why this specific brand of Shi’ism – urban and legallybased – was brought to the region by leading Arab ‘Ulama from Ottoman Syria, and changed the face of the region till this day. These émigré scholars furnished distinct sources of legitimacy for the Safavid monarchs, and an ideological defense against the Ottomans. Just as important at the time was a conscious and vivid process of Persianisation both at the state level and in society. 264 pages 216 x 134 mm August 2015 9781780767789 Paperback £17.99 / $29.95

The End of the Palestine Mandate NEW
Wm. Roger Louis, University of Texas at Austin, & Robert W. Stookey
The termination of the British Mandate in Palestine was a momentous turning point in Middle Eastern history, and the underlying problems caused by the Mandate persist to this day, as intractable as ever. This book provides a detailed overview of the dispute’s historical origins, setting forth the perspectives, motivations and objectives of the principal actors in the termination of the Mandate. Featuring a new Introduction, this classic work provides important insights into this crucial episode in the history of the Middle East.
Informal networks are an elusive factor in every society. This book illuminates longstanding informal social systems by examining the sociopolitical history of the Palestinian highlands (the West Bank). Unfolding chronologically, this book spans a period of immense change from the Late Ottoman period to the present day.

Aleppo lies in ruins, a casualty of Syria’s brutal civil war. Its streets are cloaked in darkness, its population scattered, its memories ravaged. But this was once once a vibrant world city, where Muslims, Christians and Jews lived and traded together in peace. Few places are as ancient and diverse as Aleppo – and it’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. During the Ottoman empire it became the third largest city, after Constantinople and Cairo. Its significance was its position at the end of the Silk Road, at the crossroads of the world’s trade, where merchants from Venice, Isfahan and Agra gathered in the largest souq in the Middle East and from which sprang some of the world’s most enduring food, music and culture. In this, the first history of Aleppo during this era, Philip Mansel vividly describes Aleppo at the pinnacle of its cultural and economic power, a poignant testament to this once-vital world city. 224 pages 216 x 135 mm February 2016 9781784534615 Hardback £17.99 / $27.95

The Desert and the Sown Gertrude Bell Gertrude Bell was one of the most powerful figures in the Middle East in the 20th Century. In the winter of 1906, she undertook an often dangerous journey through Greater Syria and her portrait of the landscapes, people and customs of a part of the world that very few had explored at the time is now a classic of travel writing. Bell’s Syria illuminates a region that continues to preoccupy us today as well as portraying the unique life of a remarkable, still-controversial and ultimately tragic woman. 352 pages 198 x 126 mm August 2015 9781780766911 Paperback £11.99 / $18.99

In 1922, his dreams of an independent Arabia shattered, T.E. Lawrence enlisted in the RAF under the assumed name John Hume Ross. Though methodical and restrictive, life there seemed to suit Lawrence. The Tangier Diaries NEW
History of the NEW Patriarchs of Alexandria The Copts of Egypt Before and After the Islamic Conquests Sawirus b. alMuqaffa
John Hopkins
Tangier in the 1960s and ‘70s was a fabled place. This edge city, the ‘Interzone’, became muse and escapist’s dream for artists, writers, millionaires and socialites, who wrote, painted, partied and experienced life with an intensity and freedom that they never could back home. Into this louche and cosmopolitan world came John Hopkins, a young writer who became a part of the bohemian Tangier crowd with its core of Beats that included William Burroughs, Paul and Jane Bowles and Brion Gysin, as well as Tennessee Williams, Jean Genet, Yves Saint Laurent, Barbara Hutton and Malcolm Forbes. Those intoxicating decades - Tangier’s ‘Golden Years’ - are long gone. Grand old houses that once sparkled with life are shuttered and dark and most of the eccentrics who once lived and loved in the city have died. But here, in the pages of John Hopkins’ cult classic, all the decadence and flamboyance of those days is brought to life once more. 198 x 126 mm August 2015 9781780768458 Paperback £11.99 / $18.00 Tauris Parke Paperbacks

Turkey
Revised Edition
A Modern History Erik J. Zürcher This revised edition builds upon and updates its twin themes of Turkey’s continuing incorporation into the capitalist world and the modernisation of state and society. Zürcher focuses on the forging of closer links with Europe and the changing face of the Ottoman Empire. In his account of the period since 1950, he looks at the growth of mass politics; the 3 military coups; the alliance with the West and the ambivalent relations with the Middle East; the increasingly explosive Kurdish question; and the continuing political instability and growth of Islam. 480 pages 216 x 134 mm June 2016 9781784531874 Paperback £15.99 / $35.00 9781784531867 Hardback £68.00 / $110.00

Inside the Seraglio
Identity and the Representation of Archaeology in Modern Turkey Melania Savino
Private Lives of the Sultans in Istanbul John Freely NEW
This is the story of the House of Osman, the imperial dynasty that ruled the Ottoman Empire for more than seven centuries, an empire that once stretched from central Europe to North Africa and from Persia to the Adriatic. The capital of this empire was Istanbul, ancient Byzantium, a city that stands astride Europe and Asia on the Bosphorus. And it was in the great palace of Topkapi Sarayi that the sultans of this empire ruled. Inside the Seraglio - a classic of Ottoman history takes us behind the gilded doors of the Topkapi and into the heart of the palace: the harem, where the sultan would surround himself with his wives, concubines, eunuchs, pages, dwarfs and mutes and where all the tempestuous events of empire were so often played out. This is the history of a remarkable palace in all its colour and opulence and the story of its influence on a great empire.

The Ottoman Empire was more than a centre of military and economic activity; it was a vivid and flourishing cultural force. The artefacts and objects remaining from all corners of this vast empire tell us a great deal about the everyday concerns of the Ottomans. Faroqhi has selected the most revealing, surprising and striking examples of the cultural artefacts which illuminate the lesser-known cultural and artistic world of the Ottomans. Each image is linked to the latest historiography, and the social, political and economic implications of her selections are never forgotten. In Faroqhi’s hands, the objects become ways to learn more about trade, gender and socio-political status. They open an enticing window onto the variety and colour of everyday life. 288 pages 234 x 156 mm June 2016 9781784530969 Hardback £25.00 / $40.00

Societies, Identities and Politics Ali Sipahi, Yasar Tolga Cora & Dzovinar Derderian (Eds) As an area where Ottoman centralisation faced unsurpassable challenges, the Ottoman East offers an ideal opportunity to examine an alternative social and political model of Ottoman rule. Discussing vital issues across this geographical area, such as trade routes, regional economic trends, migration patterns and the molding of local and national identities, this book offers a unique and fresh approach to the history and politics of modernsation and empire.

From Ottoman Soldier to Statesman of Turkey George W. Gawrych Baylor University
NEW in paperback
The Memoirs of an Ottoman Jew Victor Eskenazi
Victor Eskenazi, a Sephardic Jew from Constantinople, represented an ethnic and religious minority that thrived in the Ottoman Empire. The beginning of the 20th Century was a critical period in Ottoman history, which saw the end of the Empire, defeat in World War I but also a colourful influx of victorious allied armies and White Russians fleeing the Revolution, contributing to the already cosmopolitan nature of the city. Eskenazi breathed the complex air of this budding new Turkey, with its ideals, contradictions and hopes. His extraordinary memoir – which begins in Constantinople and travels across Europe during and after World War II – tells the remarkable story of a family, poignantly capturing a moment in time which now exists only in memory. 192 pages 198 x 126 mm January 2016 9781784532666 Hardback £17.99 / $35.00

From the Balkan Wars to the Armenian Genocide Hans-Lukas Kieser, Kerem Oktem & Maurus Reinkowski (Eds) This book argues that while the Ottoman Empire officially ended in 1922, the essence of it was destroyed in 1915 when the Young Turk regime eradicated the Armenians from Asia Minor. It analyses the dynamics and processes that led to genocide and left behind today’s crisis-ridden post-Ottoman Middle East. Using new primary material, it brings together analysis of the key forces which undermined an empire. 288 pages 216 x 134 mm September 2015 9781784532468 Hardback £56.00 / $90.00 Library of Ottoman Studies

The Transformation of Turkey
The Economic Transformation of Turkey NEW Neoliberalism and State Intervention Nilgün Önder
Redefining State and Society from the Ottoman Empire to the Modern Era
University of Regina, Canada
Fatma Müge Göçek University of Michigan NEW in paperback
In 1923, the Modern Turkish Republic rose from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. However, many of the contemporary issues affecting Turkish state and society today have their roots not only in the in the history of the republic, but in the historical and political memory of the state’s imperial history. Göçek draws on Turkey’s Ottoman heritage and history to explore current issues of ethnicity and religion alongside Turkey’s international position. This new perspective on history’s influence on contemporary tensions in Turkey will contribute to the ongoing debate surrounding Turkey’s accession to the EU, and insight into the transformations in the transition from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Nation-State.
Önder investigates the economic transformation of Turkey after the military coup of 1980, examining both the policies enacted under the military regime and those during the subsequent period of civilian government. 416 pages 216 x 134 mm August 2015 9781780768830 Hardback £68.00 / $110.00 Library of Modern Turkey

The Shadow Land Michael Dillon NEW
Lying between two powerful states, Russia and China, Mongolia sits in the shadow of two superpowers. In recent decades it has begun to build a parliamentary democracy which can truly claim to represent its people and protect the way of life of the Steppes people. But its immediate future is fragile. China is expanding economically into the region, buying up mining interests and exploiting vast natural resources, while Russia is keen to use Mongolia as a trade corridor to supply natural gas to Asia, and talks of an economic corridor along the Silk Road are under way. Mongolia is emerging as a key player in a region whose future is of global importance. Here, Michael Dillon draws on his expertise in Central Asian history and the history of China to present a necessary, passionate and authoritative account of Mongolia. Using local sources, he adeptly traces the nation’s history and illuminates the profound effect of the past on the development of Mongolia. 256 pages 216 x 135 mm July 2016 9781784535490 Hardback £18.99 / $29.00 ebook available

Central Asia in Art
The Age of Islam and the Mongols (Volume 3) Christoph Baumer
From Soviet Orientalism to the New Republics Aliya AbykayevaTiesenhausen
Between the 9th and 15th Centuries, Central Asia was a major political, economic and cultural hub. This third volume of Dr Baumer’s lavishly illustrated new history is a story of invasion, when brutal conquests shaped the history of the globe. A golden age of artistic, literary and scientific innovation came to an end when Genghiz Khan invaded, but Dr Baumer shows that the Mongol conquests resulted in much greater mercantile and cultural contact between Central Asia and Western Europe.

Angola’s Forgotten Massacre Lara Pawson
NEW in paperback
The humanitarian crisis in Darfur, a consequence of the civil war and ongoing violence, has attracted significant international media attention. Here, Bassil offers a re-conception of the conflict by examining the origins and progression of the conflict through the broader issue of state failure in post-colonial Sudan.
On 27th May 1977, a small demonstration against the MPLA, the ruling party of Angola, led to the slaughter of thousands of people. In this book, journalist Lara Pawson tracks down the story of what really happened in the aftermath of that fateful day. In a series of vivid encounters, she talks to eyewitnesses, victims and even perpetrators of the violent and confusing events of the 27th May and the following weeks and months. From London to Lisbon to Luanda, she meets those who continue to live in the shadow of the appalling events of 40 years ago and who – in most cases – have been too afraid to speak about them before. As well as shedding light on the events of 1977, this book contributes to a deeper understanding of modern Angola – its people and its politics; past, present and future.

The First Mapping of America
The General Survey of British North America Alex Johnson NEW
T. Tvedt, University of Bergen, T. Oestigaard, University of Bergen, O. McIntyre, T. Kasse Woldesadik & J. Bakke (Eds)
Eager to learn more of North America’s economic and military potential, the British government commissioned an ambitious survey to provide an accurate map of the entire North American empire. Known as the General Survey of British North America, it ranks as one of the most impressive technical achievements of the period. This book tells the story of the Survey, of the spectacular maps and the extraordinary men who created them, and the battles they fought with Crown administrators, governors and wealthy speculators seeking to use the Survey for their own ends.

The sacred allure of the Holy Grail has fascinated writers and ensnared knights for over a thousand years, and the eternal chalice has the richest associations of any icon in British myth. The common thread running through all these stories is the assumption that the Grail legend has a single source with a meaning – if only we could decode it. That meaning has become the subject of coded, secret documents and is the central feature of a vast conspiracy supposedly stretching back to the dawn of western civilisation. Juliette Wood here reveals the elusive and embedded significance of the Grail story in popular consciousness – as myth, medieval romance, tangible holy relic and finally as the centre of a theory of global conspiracy.

John Hargrave and the Kibbo Kift
Cathy Ross, Museum of London, & Oliver Bennett This is the first detailed account of the remarkable British writer and artist John Hargrave (1894– 1982), and his three creations: The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, The Green Shirt Movement for Social Credit and The Social Credit Party of Great Britain. Combining art, politics and design to visually stunning effect, Hargrave and his followers created a maverick but uniquely English form of modernism. Emerging from the turbulence of the 20th Century, this colourful Utopian youth movement has strong resonances with the 21st Century world. The book draws on the extensive visual archive of the Kibbo Kift, held at the Museum of London, and reveals a little-known but highly influential movement in modernist culture. 192 pages 280 x 230 mm September 2015 9781781300404 Paperback £25.00 / $40.00

We are all fascinated by blindness: partly from fear of how we would cope, and partly from the curiosity of experiencing the world without sight. This book is the first accessible history of the subject written in over 50 years – a powerful and erudite investigation of how the physical state of not seeing, either from birth or during life, affects the life of an individual, a community and a civilisation. 256 pages 234 x 156 mm April 2016 9781848856905 Hardback £18.99 / $29.50

A Century of British Film Distribution Geoffrey MacNab
Film Distributors are the unsung heroes of cinema. Drawing on the archives of the Film Distributors’ Association (FDA), as well as interviews with leading British distributors, this book tells the story of how films were, and are, brought to British cinema-goers. It profiles some of the most flamboyant and controversial figures involved in UK distribution over the last 100 years, ranging from the founders of huge companies to visionaries who have launched small art house labels. MacNab also explores how the sector has reacted to a rapidly changing market and technological environment, from the transition to sound in the late 1920s to the move to digital in the 2000s. Published to coincide with the centenary of the FDA’s creation in December 1915, this book highlights the crucial role that distributors have played in maintaining the foundations of the British film industry. 272 pages 216 x 134 mm December 2015 9781784534899 Paperback £16.99 / $27.50
