THE IDEA OF IRAN SERIES PUBLISHED IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE SOUDAVAR FOUNDATION

THE AGE OF THE SELJUQS The Idea of Iran, Vol. 6

Edmund Herzig, Wadham College, University of Oxord, and Sarah Stewart, SOAS, University of London (Eds) From their ancestral heartland by the shores of the Aral Sea, the medieval Oghuz Turks marched westwards in search of dominion. Their conquests led to control of a Muslim empire that united the territories of the eastern Islamic world, melded Turkic and Persian influences and transported Persian culture to Anatolia. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the new Turkic-Persian symbiosis that had earlier emerged under the Samanids, Ghaznavids and Qara-Khanids came to fruition in a period that, under the enlightened rule of the Seljuq dynasty, combined imperial grandeur with remarkable artistic achievement. This latest volume in The Idea of Iran series focuses on a system of government based on Turkic ‘men of the sword’ and Persian ‘men of the pen’ that the Seljuqs (famous foes of the Crusader Frankish knights) consolidated in a form that endured for centuries. The book further explores key topics relating to the innovative Seljuq era, including: conflicted Sunni-Shi‘a relations between the Sunni Seljuq empire and Ismaili Fatimid caliphate; art, culture and ceramics; and poetry and architecture. 192 PAGES 234 X 156MM 2014 9781780769479 HARDBACK £39.50

Irrigation and Environment in the Middle East, 500 BC NEW IN PAPERBACK AD 1500

Peter Christensen,

University of Copenhagen

Western scholars have traditionally explained the history of the Middle East in terms of the rise and fall of dynasties and states. After the glories of a golden age the region is said to have gone into a steady and prolonged decline: yet just how extensive was the contraction of agriculture, how general the de-urbanization? In seeking to answer these questions Peter Christensen provides important insights that challenge our conventional understanding of the history of the region. Through a detailed study of Iranshahr – the region between the Euphrates and Oxus rivers that was ruled by Persia and marked by Persian civilization – the author looks at the changing patterns of settlement and irrigation that occurred, from the heartland of the region to the oases of the Iranian Plateau. He reveals a more complex picture than previously thought, in which war, disease and administrative misrule were all important factors but in which the environment is shown to play a key role. The environmental collapse of Mesopotamia drained the strength of the Persian empire, and the rest of Iranshahr had neither the economic potential nor the population to compensate for the flagging imperial heartland. One consequence was the inability of the Persian empire to maintain a costly regular army; their subsequent dependence upon nomad leaders for military purposes ultimately made such leaders rulers of Iranshahr. 368 PAGES 244 X 172MM JANUARY 2016 9781784533182 PAPERBACK £25.00 530 COLOUR AND B&W ILLUSTRATIONS

Exploring Religion, History and Tradition Alan Williams, Sarah Stewart and Almut Hintze (Eds)

Zoroastrianism’s unbroken history, remarkable texts and distinctive beliefs span three millennia, making it one of the world’s most venerable faiths. For many centuries it enjoyed imperial patronage and profoundly shaped the culture of antiquity. The enigmatic figure of Zarathushtra (or Zoroaster) has exerted continual fascination in the West, influencing creative artists as diverse as Voltaire, Nietzsche, Mozart and Yeats. This authoritative volume explores Zoroastrianism in all its rich complexity. Examining key themes, it places the modern Zoroastrians of Iran, and the Parsis of India, in their proper contexts. The book extends and complements the coverage of its companion volume, The Everlasting Flame. 400 PAGES 234 X 156MM FEBRUARY 2016 9781784536336 HARDBACK £68.00

ANCIENT IRAN THROUGH CHINESE RECORDS NEW Commodities and Culture Berthold Laufer

In this major study – regarded as his most important work – the pioneering anthropologist, Berthold Laufer documents the cultural transfers that took place between China and Iran in early times. He does so by tracing the history of cultivated plants, drugs, products, minerals, metals, precious stones and textiles, in their migration from Persia to China and from China to Persia. Few other publications provide so much informative detail about the way human activity has modified the natural world through the movement of plants and other natural resource products from one historical civilisation to another. 448 PAGES 234 X 156MM FEBRUARY 2017 9781784532017 HARDBACK £75.00

Minority Religions in Medieval and Early Modern Iran

NEW IN PAPERBACK

Aptin Khanbaghi, University of Cambridge

Contemporary political events have generated a strong interest in minorities in the Middle East. Although today the region is mostly identified with Islam, it has been home to many other great cultures, and the civilization of the Islamic world is itself indebted to the various peoples that the Arabs subdued in the 7th and 8th centuries. Far from fading away after the Arab conquest, the inhabitants of the Iranian plateau and of Mesopotamia were central players in the lives of their regions. However, the magnitude of their contribution to the emergence of the early Islamic world has hitherto been neglected. In this fascinating and groundbreaking study, Khanbaghi offers a comprehensive discussion of those groups that resisted assimilation to the new Islamic order yet continued to participate actively in the socio-political life of their homeland. He concentrates on Iran, which due to its complex religious history offers unique opportunities for the study of non-Muslim communities, specifically of Zoroastrians, Jews and Christians. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2016 9781845110567 HARDBACK £59.50 9781784537463 PAPERBACK £15.99

EARLY MODERN AND SAFAVID IRAN

THE HISTORY OF THE LATE REVOLUTIONS IN PERSIA NEW

An Eyewitness Account of the Fall of the Safavid Dynasty

J.T. Krusinski Introduction by Rudi Matthee, University of

Delaware

The fall of the powerful Safavid Dynasty (1501-1722) to invading Afghan tribesmen in 1722 marked a crucial turning point in the country’s history. Father Krusinski, Procurator-General of the Jesuit Mission and intermediary between the Papacy and the Safavid court, resided in Isfahan and was thus an eyewitness to the siege of the city. His account of the conditions and events preceding and during the siege and the subsequent demise of the Safavids is unique. It also offers key insights into the workings of the late Safavid state and government as well as the functions of the royal harem. This set includes the translation of the Clodius edition undertaken at the behest of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Damat Ibrahim. Together, these scarce volumes provide a unique source of information on late Safavid Persia. With an introduction by leading contemporary scholar, Rudi Matthee, the set will be welcomed by academics, collectors and libraries.

FORMING NATIONAL IDENTITY IN IRAN The Idea of Homeland Derived from Ancient Persian and Islamic Imaginations of Place

Spurred by a Russian threat to India and the weakness of the Qajar dynasty (1796-1925), Britain established an extensive consular network to further its interests in southern Iran in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1888, there were just four British consulates in the country; by 1921 there were twenty-three. H. Lyman Stebbins investigates the development and consequences of British imperialism in Iran in a time of international rivalry, revolution and world war. While previous narratives of Anglo-Iranian relations have focused on the highest diplomatic circles in Tehran, London, Calcutta and St. Petersburg, this book argues that British consuls and political agents made the vast southern borderlands of Iran the real centre of British power and influence during this period. Based on British consular archives from Bushehr, Shiraz, Sistan and Muhammarah, this book reveals that Britain, India and Iran were linked together by discourses of colonial knowledge and patterns of political, military and economic control. It also contextualizes the emergence of Iranian nationalism as well as the failure and collapse of the Qajar state during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution and the First World War.

Power and Authority in Iran

Vahid Nick Pay,

University of Durham NEW

NEW

Nuclear power has for the most part dominated Western media and academic analyses concerning Iranian foreign policy in recent years. This focus, however, can be misleading, especially as regards the early presidency of Mohammad Khatami (1997–2005). In a riposte to Samuel Huntington’s ‘Clash of Civilisations’ theory, Khatami proposed that there ought to be a ‘Dialogue among Civilisations’. In this book, Edward Wastnidge examines Khatami’s proposition, derived from the contemporary Iranian polymath Dariush Shayegan, not as a philosophical suggestion, but as a real foreign policy tool that enabled Khatami to make overtures towards the US. Across bi-lateral and multi-lateral examples, he explores its specific application and how it was used to create foreign policy and aid diplomacy. Furthermore, by placing the development of the idea within Iran’s domestic political context, Wastnidge is also able to shed light onto the rise of the reform movement during this period. Based on extensive research, Diplomacy and Reform in Iran is a timely contribution to scholarship, and important reading for students and researchers of contemporary Iran and the complexities of Iranian foreign policy. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2016 9781784533281 HARDBACK £64.00

THE SHAH’S IRAN RISE AND FALL

Conversations with an Insider

Abdolreza Ansari,

translated by Katayoon Ansari-Biglari NEW

When the Islamic Republic of Iran launched its fully-articulated political agenda in the aftermath of the 1979 revolution, it merged the concept of political Islam with the previously secular readings of the republican doctrine of state. This book provides an analysis of the constitutional and institutional structure of public power in the most emblematic instance of a theocratic republic to date: the Islamic Republic of Iran, using the methods of political science. Nearly four decades after the 1979 revolution, a thorough evaluation of Iran’s prevalently anti-modernist political discourse and concurrent claims of republican popular sovereignty is here carried out and their theoretical coherence and applied success investigated. Vahid Nick Pay surveys the major republican schools of political philosophy on the one hand, and the principal narratives of the prevailing Shi’a political theology on the other, to provide a pioneering evaluation of the republican credentials of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It will be essential reading for scholars of political science and modern Iranian politics and history. 352 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2016 9781784535636 HARDBACK £69.00

Security, Diplomacy and American Influence

Alex Vatanka Middle East Institute, Washington DC NEW IN PAPERBACK

A chance encounter diverted Abdolreza Ansari from completing his doctorate in the US, and set him on a professional journey which mirrored the prolific rise and the precipitous fall of the regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran. Appointed a cabinet minister at the age of just 34, Ansari consistently and methodically used his skills in an attempt to institute modern managerial systems and solid foundations in his various assignments. He went on to have a high-ranking ministerial career ending up in the all-important role of Minister of Interior. His appointment as Managing Director of the Imperial Organisation for Social Services placed him at the centre of power, giving him extraordinary insights into the Iranian political scene of that era. Ansari’s proximity to the Iranian royal court, his encounters with a multitude of well-known personalities and his perceptions of the political culture in 1970s Tehran make this book an important historical source and a fascinating portrayal of the inner workings of the Shah’s Iran. 336 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784536329 HARDBACK £27.50

The respective policies of the governments of Iran and Pakistan pose serious challenges to US interests in the Middle East, Asia and beyond. These two regional powers, with a combined population of around 300 million, have been historically intertwined in various cultural, religious and political ways. Pakistan, a politically fragmented and unstable but nuclear-armed state, has a history of proliferation dating back to the 1980s. Iran, on the other hand, continues to develop its nuclear program despite UN sanctions and looks to break its isolation whenever possible. Even at times of heightened tension, such as in the second half of the 1980s, Islamabad provided Tehran with valuable nuclear know-how. As US focus in the region increases, Vatanka explores whether this neighbourly cooperation is fuelled by cultural and religious bonds or, indeed, as a reaction to the West. Even more concerning for the US is the support that Iran and Pakistan each give to insurgent elements in Afghanistan and, indeed, Iran’s past funding of minority Shi‘i Pakistani militants. Vatanka presents the first comprehensive analysis of this long-standing and complex relationship which will prove essential reading for students, specialists and those interested in the Middle East. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2015 9781784532147 HARDBACK £62.00 9781784536909 PAPERBACK £12.99

The most important global instrument for ensuring women’s rights is the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), yet Iran is not a party to this. Iran’s continued retention of discriminatory laws stands in stark contrast to the advances Iranian women have made in other spheres since the Revolution in 1979. Leila Alikarami here aims to determine the extent to which the actions of women’s rights activists have led to a significant change in their legal status. She argues that while Iranian women have not yet obtained legal equality, the gender bias of the Iranian legal system has been successfully challenged and has lost its legitimacy. More pertinently, the social context has become more prepared to accommodate legal rights for women. Highlighting the key challenges that proponents of gender equality face in the Muslim context, Alikarami attempts to ascertain the causes of Iran’s failure to ratify the CEDAW and questions whether and to what extent interpretations of Islamic principles prevent Iran from doing so. Applying feminist legal theory to contemporary Iran, Alikarami’s approach re-evaluates the underlying principles that have shaped the struggle for equal rights between the sexes. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2017 9781784533168 HARDBACK £69.00

Western Images in Safavid and Qajar Iran Parviz Tanavoli

During the course of the 19th century, a relatively modern medium entered the private space of Iranian houses of the wealthy and became a popular feature of interior design in Persia. This was print media and the subject was European women. These idealised images adorned houses across the country. The interest in images of Western women was an unusual by-product of Iran’s early political and cultural encounters with the West. In a world where women were rarely seen in public and, even then, were heavily veiled, the notion of European women dressed in elegant and revealing clothing sparked much curiosity among well-to-do merchants and aristocrats. The introduction of such images began in the 17th century with frescoes in royal palaces and spread to other manifestations in the Qajar era. Parviz Tanavoli here brings together the definitive collection of these unique images.

Contemporary Filmmakers Since the Islamic Revolution Twelve of the most renowned and important filmmakers of contemporary Iran speak candidly about creating cinema in a revolutionised – and traumatised – society. They reflect on the Iranian Revolution and the influence of its aftermath on their work, as well as the effects of their work on audiences. They offer first-hand insights into how the works of Western cinema, as well as Iranian art and poetry, have influenced the making of Iran’s image; and how New Iranian Cinema became a global phenomenon, despite censorship, ideology wars, sanctions and political isolation. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2015 9781784534172 HARDBACK £69.00

of the Arts

The films of Abbas Kiarostami confront the questions of cinematic representation, identity, and the relationship between cinema and everyday life in eloquent and imaginative ways. Through a close examination of Kiarostami’s formal and narrative strategies in his films, notably Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us, Close-Up and Ten, this innovative book works against the grain of auteurist readings of Kiarostami’s films to explore global circulation and the controversy over censorship’s role in the cinema. It grounds his films firmly within the historical context of Iranian national cinema, revealing the ways in which the reception of films across multiple sites can contribute to how national narratives are articulated locally and globally. It traces Iranian national cinema’s self-reflexive narration of its own history and how, in the process, it positions itself as a major player in the construction of national consciousness. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM FEBRUARY 2017 9781784535773 HARDBACK £64.00

A Study of Fourteenth-century Persian Lyric Poetry

Dominic Brookshaw, University of Oxford

Hafiz of Shiraz has long been celebrated by many as one of the greatest Persian poets. During the fourteenth century he was master of the Persian ‘ghazal’ – the pre-eminent genre of love poetry in the Iranian world in its day. Brookshaw places Hafiz into a broader literary context by comparing his poetry with his two most important contemporaries: ‘Ubayd-i Zakani and the poet-princess, Jahan-Malik Khatun. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM JUNE 2017 9781848851443 HARDBACK £62.00 BRITISH INSTITUTE OF PERSIAN STUDIES, VOL. 3

The Lyrical Verses of Persia’s Master Poet

Homa Katouzian

With poetry which speaks across the ages, Sa’di (1210–81) is a vital classical poet and a towering figure of the medieval Persian canon. Comparable in skill and stature to other Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Hafez, Rumi and Omar Khayyam, Sa’di’s verses – best known through his ‘Bustan’ and ‘Golestan’ – address universal themes of passion, love and the human condition in works which are both psychologically perceptive and beautifully crafted. His mystical writings, contemporaneous with Rumi, reveal a degree of depth, wisdom and insight which have placed Sa’di in the pantheon of world literature.
