the History of the Late Revolutions in Persia NEW An Eyewitness Account of the Fall of the Safavid Dynasty J.T. Krusinski Introduction by Rudi Matthee, University of Delaware
The Safavid Dynasty (1501-1722) was one of the longest lasting Persian dynasties. Its fall to invading Afghan tribesmen marked a crucial turning point in Iranian history.Yet the dying days of the dynasty are poorly documented in indigenous Persian sources and scholars are heavily reliant on written reports by foreign observers. Father Krusinski was a Polish Jesuit who was head of the Jesuit Mission in Iran. He acted as internediary between the Papacy and Safavid Court and also served as translator of official documents at the Safavid Court. He was resident in Iran at the time of its siege by Aghan tribesmen and these volumes provide his unique eyewitness account of the events and the subsequent fall of the city later that year. Krusinski provides a remarkably secular account, offering real insights into the workings of late Safavi state and government. His account of the role eunuchs played at the court of Shah Soltan Hoseyn and how they contributed to the weakening of the Safavid state is especially valuable. This 3 volume set includes the translation of the Clodius edition undertaken at the behest of the Ottoman Grand Vizier Damat Ibrahim. The set is introduced by Professor Rudi Matthee, one of the leading scholars of the Safavid period.

He was resident in Isfahan at the time of its siege by the Ghilza’i Afghans in 1722. He died in Poland in 1756 aged 81 years. Rudi Matthee is John and Dorothy Munroe Distinguished Professor of History, University of Delaware. History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria NEW The Copts of Egypt Before and After the Islamic Conquests Sawirus b. al-Muqaffa Introduction by Hugh Kennedy, SOAS, University of London
History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria is a unique series of biographies of the Coptic patriarchs from the earliest, St Mark, to the tenth century. Many of the accounts are in fact older Greek and Coptic works translated into Arabic and edited by Sawirus, who sought out the originals from the monasteries of the day. Often based upon eyewitness accounts by contemporary authors, they provide an essential source for the religious, economic and social life of Egypt in the early Islamic period. The events recorded include the Muslim conquest of Egypt, the overthrow of the last Umayad ruler Marwan II, Arab-Christian relations, and histories of the various countries. Unavailable even in many libraries, this edition contains both the Arabic text and the English translation of B. Evetts, together with an Introduction by leading contemporary scholar Hugh Kennedy. Sawirus ibn al-Muqaffa was the earliest of the great Coptic writers in the Arabic language. He proved himself a great champion of Coptic Christianity and a scholar of outstanding erudition. Highly venerated by contemporary patriarchs and respected by the Fatimid Caliphs, he remains one of Coptic Christianity’s greatest historians. History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria is considered his greatest work.

The Eclipse of the Abbasid Caliphate NEW Miskawaiha Translated by D.S. Margoliouth Introduction by Hugh Kennedy, SOAS, University of London
The Eclipse of the Abbasid Caliphate is one of the most original and interesting chronicles to have survived from the medieval Islamic world. Written by the noted Persian historian and philosopher, Miskawayh, it is a lively and vigorous account of events during a time that many consider to be the golden age of Islamic scholarship. Miskawayh’s position at court and his role as keeper of state papers meant he was well placed to provide what is an extremely well informed account of events. Translated from the Arabic by David Margoliouth, Laudian Professor of Arabic at Oxford University, the work is long out of print and now very rare. This edition is introduced by Hugh Kennedy, a leading international authority on the period. 3 volume set 480, 464, 504 Pages 234 x 156mm november 2014 9781780760650 Hardback £325.00

Nobles and Nobility NEW
The History of an Institution in Europe Michael Sayer
In feudal and early modern society, the nobility was a force of major importance.Yet despite its undeniable influence on the course of history, there has been a noticeable lack of published material covering the ways in which nobility was (and sometimes still is) defined in public law, as opposed to its political and economic influence, or the legal privileges which noble status guaranteed. In this major new three-volume work, Michael Sayer provides an extensive survey of all the most significant primary sources relating to the status of nobility in Europe from Roman times through the medieval period and beyond, setting them within the broader historical context of the time. He also examines separately the many juridical aspects of nobility – titles, arms, heraldry, chivalric orders, and offices – providing a thorough methodological basis for the study of nobility. As a comprehensive survey of nobles and nobility in European society over 2000 years, this book will be an invaluable reference tool for scholars and students.

England as a Maritime Power NEW Sir Julian Corbett Introduction by Andrew Lambert. King’s College London
Sir Julian Corbett was the seminal thinker on British strategy. His great asset was the historical rigour he brought to his subject and his ability to draw out the larger patterns and ideas that informed the past. Corbett’s work provides the first reliable overview of the development and application of strategy. The works that make up this set occupy a significant place in the evolution of his distinctive approach to his subject. Drake and the Tudor Navy and Successors of Drake are among the first truly modern naval histories, shifting the focus away from chronicles of smoked-filled battles full of heroics, to the interplay of national strategy, policy and operations. England in the Mediterranean stresses how a relatively small naval presence had exerted an influence far greater than mere numbers or battles would suggest. It establishes the key theme of Corbett’s later thinking: the wider diplomatic importance of naval activity and the relative unimportance of fleet battle. 5 volume set 464, 552, 528, 408, 376 pages 234 x 156mm december 2014 9781780764412 Hardback £450.00
Sir Julian Corbett (1854-1922) was a pioneer in the development of modern naval strategy. His ideas helped to shape the navy’s reforms and remain required reading today. Educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge, he was a man of independent means and came to naval history later in his career. He lectured at the British Naval War College, advised the Admiralty on strategy and served as secretary to the Cabinet Historical Office. He wrote the official history of the Great War Naval operations and was knighted in 1917.

The Historical Encyclopedia of Atlantic Vigias NEW A Complete Guide to the Known Nautical Hazards and Dangers, 1700-1930 Raymond Hogego
Open any nineteenth century navigational chart of the Atlantic Ocean and what is immediately apparent is the proliferation of rocks, shoals, islands and other hazards that litter almost every corner of the ocean. Marked by tiny crosses annotated with strange-sounding names, these ‘vigias’, as seamen called them, were dangers whose existence rested on authentic, documented sightings. Yet amazingly none of these supposed hazards had any real existence. What is the story behind these mysterious vigias? Raymond Howgego offers a unique study of this intriguing phenomenon. He identifies more than three hundred such vigias, providing exact locations, details of their original discovery and those who discovered them, as well as Admiralty expeditions despatched to investigate them. Based upon extensive personal research of every known Atlantic chart, original logs, nautical journals and directories, together with multilingual sources, and with an annotated critical bibliography, the result is a compelling account of an intriguing phenomenon of geographical discovery, maritime history and nautical culture. Ray Howgego is an explorer and writer who has travelled extensively across the world, including Europe, China, the Middle East, Central Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, South America (from the Amazon to Cape Horn), Iceland and many oceanic islands. He has been consultant to National Geographic magazine and to a number of TV documentaries and film series. Garden Cities in Theory and Practice NEW Principles of a New Architecture in Urban Planning Alfred Richard Sennett
Garden cities were carefully planned communties that sought to combine the best of town and country living to provide healthy vibrant communities on a human scale. They would offer affordable housing for all classes, in tree-lined streets with well-tended gardens, jobs within easy commuting distance, integrated transport, all surrounded by a green belt to prevent urban sprawl. Popular toward the end of the nineteenth century as an answer to the overcrowding and pollution of the industrial revolution, the first examples were built in England and included Letchworth, Hampstead and Welwyn Garden City, in the early years of the twentieth century. The idea soon caught on internationally, with garden cities being planned and built in the USA, Australia, Germany and Japan amongst countries. Alfred Sennett’s little known classic work offers one of the most comprehensive accounts of garden cities. Its two volumes cover not only the history and idea of the garden city but are unique in their encycopaedic coverage of the practicalities of the garden city. Among the topics covered are transport, building materials, agriculture, self-cleansing streets, rolling roofs, and sociological aspects of the garden city. Offering detailed coverage and valuable insights into aspects of garden cities not covered by other works on the subject, and with a new introduction by a leading contemporary scholar, this little known and rare classic will be welcomed by academics and professionals alike in town planning, architecture, urban sociology, cities, environment and conservation. 2 volumes 1450 Pages 246 x 189 mm january 2015 Hardback £250.00

a history of water All societies must manage their water resources. From the early civilizations of the Indus valley, nearly 5, 000 years ago, to today’s megacities, meeting the water needs of an urban population remains a perpetual task. How a society manages and controls its water resources – whether for food and farming, drinking, sanitation, power or transport – plays a formative role in its development. And never more so than in our own century, with the global population approaching seven billion and the continuing threat of climate change. As concerns over global water resources continue to grow, the pioneering History of Water series brings a much needed historical perspective to the relationship between water and society. Covering all aspects of water and society – social, cultural, political, religious and technological – the volumes reveal how water issues can only be fully understood when all aspects are properly integrated. Unprecedented in its geographical coverage and unrivalled in its multidisciplinary span, the History of Water series makes a unique and original contribution to a key contemporary issue.
Series Editor: Terje Tvedt Terje Tvedt is Professor of Geography at the University of Bergen and Professor of Political Science and Global History at the University of Oslo. A past President of the International Water History Association, he has published extensively on development issues and the role of water in history. He is the author of a number of influential books, including The River Nile in the Age of the British (I.B.Tauris, 2004), and A Journey in the Future of Water (I.B.Tauris, 2013). Professor Tvedt has also written and presented three successful television documentaries on water, shown in 150 countries.

A History of Water, Series III
NEW SERIES
Volume 1
Water and Urbanization NEW Terje Tvedt, University of Bergen and Terje Oestigaard, Nordic Africa Institute, Sweden (Eds) For the first time in human history more than half the world’s population lives in urban areas. Future growth is predicted to be mainly amongst urban populations in low and middle income countries, particularly those of Asia and Africa. One of the most important issues arising from this growth in urbanisation concerns water: the world will need more efficient water management systems under increasingly complex social environments and uncertain natural conditions due to climatic variability. This volume explores the relationship between water and urbanisation from both a historic and comparative perspective, and especially with how the struggle and ability to utilise water sources have encouraged urban expansion. 234 x 156mm 672 Pages Illustrated june 2014 9781780764474 Hardback £89.50
Volume 2
Sovereignty and International Water Law NEW Terje Tvedt, University of Bergen, Owen McIntyre, University College, Cork & Tadesse Kasse Woldesadik, University of Oslo (Eds) International water law attempts to regulate water users and water usage in such a way as to maintain and develop equitable divisions in decisions affecting water governance. Central to international water law have been the principles of sovereign equality of states and non-interference in matters of exclusive national jurisdiction. As global climate change threatens to radically change the political and physical climate with regard to water issues, so this is encouraging a reassessment of some of the fundamental principles of international water law, including the issue of absolute territorial sovereignty, the rights of indigenous peoples versus the state, and absolute ownership of natural resources. 750 Pages 234 x 156mm Illustrated january 2015 9781780764481 Hardback £89.50
Volume 3
Water and Climate Change NEW Terje Tvedt and Jostein Bakke (Eds) We are living in an age where uncertainty about climate change has become an overriding issue. This uncertainty is primarily an uncertainty about the future of water: different waterscapes will change in accordance with variations in rainfall, evaporation and human interference in natural water systems. In the past, societies have disappeared because they were unable to adapt to new environmental circumstances and ecological variables but changes in the waterscape have also provided the opportunity for new societal developments. Water and Climate Change focuses on how how climate change impacts water systems and, thereby, the development of societies. It explores how climate-engineered changes in the waterscape have affected human society in the past and addresses the theoretical and methodological challenges arising in studies of climate change, water systems and societal development, within both geographical and historical perspectives. 600 pages 234 x 156mm october 2015 9781780768717 Hardback £85.00
