Religion
2013/2014
Message from the Editor: ‘We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.’ Jonathan Swift’s words, written in 1711, now seem more prescient than ever. A better understanding of separate religious traditions is more than ever essential in the complex and often discordant modern world. In recent years I.B.Tauris has been at the forefront of exploring the interfaces between and within different religiosities, faithcommunities and groupings. Without resorting to reductionism, but at the same time robustly resisting any confessional or faith-based exposition of doctrine, our lists are broad-based, inclusive and marked above all by a desire to make sense of belief and in the contemporary sphere. We publish across the spectrum of that credence: in Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist and inter-religious studies. We are attracted as much by scholarly articulations of atheism or agnosticism as we are of religious commitment.

Our present list reflects this desire to be a thoughtful, engaged publisher of modern religious studies, both reflecting and shaping leading edge discourse in this field. We publish for the academy as well as for a more general audience, and our programme for 2013/2014 includes undergraduate textbooks (An Introduction to Modern Jewish Philosophy, The Medieval Christian Philosophers), authoritative monographs and reference books (The Politics of Iconoclasm, The Three Sons of Abraham, The Sacred Architecture of Byzantium, Gemini and the Sacred, Babylon), titles for general readers (Unbelievable, The Devil, The Warrior Women of Islam, The Day Begins at Sunset, First Light) and course-oriented supplementary books for upper-level students (Kant and the Meaning of Religion, Hegel and the Art of Negation). A particular highlight of this list, representing the culmination of a lifetime’s reflection on how theology can meaningfully contribute to discussions about society, culture and politics, is the late Ronald Thiemann’s valedictory work The Humble Sublime.

Medieval Heresy
NEW
An Introduction Andrea Janelle Dickens
Inquisitors in the Middle Ages believed they could easily tell the difference between orthodox believers and heretics. But were heretics and faithful Christians really so very distinct? In this much-needed and lively survey, Andrea Janelle Dickens shows that the lines drawn between orthodoxy and heterodoxy were actually far from clear-cut. Focusing on the key groups and ideas, the author discusses Petrobrussians, Cathars, Waldensians, Beguines, Lollards, Hussites and heresy in late medieval witchcraft.

A Dictionary of the Bible NEW
Antiquities, Biography, Geography and Natural History William Smith
Aaron P. Johnson Lee University, Cleveland Eusebius of Caesarea (263-339 CE) is one of the most important intellectuals whose writings survive from late antiquity. His texts made lasting and wide-ranging contributions, from history-writing and apologetics to biblical commentary and Christian oratory. He was a master of many of the literary and scholarly traditions of the Greek heritage. Aaron P. Johnson offers a lively introduction to Eusebius’ chief oeuvre while also discussing recent scholarship on this foundational early Christian writer. Placing Eusebius in the context of his age, the author provides a full account his life, including the period when Eusebius controversially sought to assist the heretic Arius. He then discusses the major writings: apologetic treatises; the pedagogical and exegetical works; the historical texts; the anti-Marcellan theological discourses; and expositions directly connected to the Emperor Constantine. 256 Pages 216 x 134mm November 2013 9781780765556 Hardback £39.50 9781780765563 Paperback £12.99 Understanding Classics

The Devil
Medieval Travels from China through Central Asia to Persia and Beyond Rabban Sawma
A New Biography Philip C. Almond University of Queensland
It is often said that the devil has all the best tunes. He also has as many names as he has guises. Lucifer, Mephistopheles, Beelzebub (in Christian thought), Ha-Satan or the Adversary (in Jewish scripture) and Iblis or Shaitan (in Islamic tradition) has throughout the ages been a compelling and charismatic presence. For two thousand years the supposed reign of God has been challenged by the fiery malice of his opponent, as contending forces of good and evil have between them weighed human souls in the balance. In this rich and multi-textured biography, Philip C. Almond explores the figure of the devil from the first centuries of the Christian era through the rise of classical demonology and witchcraft persecutions to the modern post-Enlightenment ‘decline’ of Hell. The author shows that the Prince of Darkness remains an irresistible subject in history, religion, art, literature and culture.

Coptic Civilization
The Sacred Architecture of Byzantium
Two Thousand Years of Christianity in Egypt NEW Edited by Gawdat Gabra
Art, Liturgy and Symbolism in Early Christian Churches Nicholas N. Patricios University of Miami NEW
The churches of the Byzantine era were built to represent heaven on earth. Nicholas N. Patricios here offers a comprehensive survey, from the age of Constantine to the fall of Constantinople, of the nexus between buildings, worship and art. His identification of seven distinct Byzantine church types, based on a close analysis of 370 church building plans, will have considerable appeal to Byzantinists, lay and scholarly. Beyond categorizing and describing the churches themselves, which are richly illustrated with photographs, plans and diagrams, the author interprets the sacred liturgy that took place within these holy buildings, tracing the development of the worship in conjunction with architectural advances made up to the 15th century. 512 Pages 246 x 189mm October 2013 9781780762913 Hardback £45.00 Library of Classical Studies, Vol. 4

Egypt’s Copts make up one of the oldest and largest Christian communities in the Middle East.Yet despite the availability of a large number of books on aspects of Coptic culture, there is to date no single volume that provides a comprehensive cultural history of the Copts and their achievements. Coptic Civilization aims to fill this gap, by introducing the general reader to Coptic culture in all its variety and multifaceted richness. 272 Pages 235 x 285mm November 2013 9789774165474 Hardback 29.95 The American University in Cairo Press*

The History of a Radical International Movement Charlotte Alston
Can belief be taken for granted when the modern self is now so thoroughly cut off from the transcendent? The philosopher Charles Taylor has argued, in his influential work A Secular Age, that it cannot. But theologian Ronald F.Thiemann asserts – against Taylor – that people can yet find divine significance in the ordinary and everyday as much as in structured faith and worship. Discussing Luther, Bonhoeffer, Camus, Orwell and other important thinkers, the author argues in favour, even in a secular context, of the idea of sacred worth as a vital component of modern identity. 256 Pages 216 x 134mm November 2013 9781780767444 Hardback £52.50 Library of Modern Religion, Vol. 35

Negativity, Creativity and Contemporary Thought Andrew W. Hass, University of Stirling
Andrew Hass argues that the notion of Hegelian negation moves us into an expansive territory where art, religion and philosophy may all be radically reconceived and broken open into new forms of philosophical expression. The implications of such a revived Hegelian philosophy are, the author argues, vast and current.

What is a religion? What triggered the spontaneous development of distinct religions throughout the ancient world? How do religions evoke the ultimate realities they claim to address? In this concise and elegant overview, Jörg Rüpke addresses the similarities and differences of religions in antiquity, tracing their sometimes complex lineage into modern systems of belief. Greek and Roman religion is discussed not in isolation, but in the broader context of western Asia and Egypt. 192 Pages 216 x 134mm September 2013 9781780761695 Hardback £35.00 9781780761701 Paperback £12.99 Ancients and Moderns

Religion, Violence and the Culture of Image-Breaking in Christianity and Islam James Noyes
G.R. Evans NEW University of Cambridge
Did the universe start with a bang, or has it existed always? Was there a supernatural being behind it all, or just mindless forces? The beginning of things has forever tested the limits of curiosity, and such questions have both challenged atheists and inspired believers. In this lively and wideranging book, G R Evans explores the world’s myriad creation stories against the background of the biggest question there is: what are we doing here? Discussing Swahili legends that resemble the Book of Genesis, Greek tales about the Titans, Native American, Inca and Mesopotamian mythologies, and Vedic creation cycles that begin with a cosmic egg or seed, the author surveys polytheist, monotheist and dualist ideas about supernatural power. 304 Pages 216 x 135mm October 2013 9781780761558 Hardback £22.50

Interfaith Encounters Between Judaism, Christianity and Islam Jacques B. Doukhan (Ed.)
The contributors to this volume start from the premise that there is a price to be paid by the ‘sons of Abraham’: whether Jews, Muslims or Christians. Including provocative reflections by Elie Wiesel, Irving Greenberg, Hans Küng and others, the book makes a vital contribution to dialogue. 272 Pages 216 x 134mm November 2013 9781780767437 Hardback £52.50 Library of Modern Religion, Vol. 36

Why believe? What kinds of things do people believe in? How have they come to believe them? And how does what they believe – or disbelieve – shape their lives and the meaning the world has for them? For Graham Ward, who is one of the most innovative writers on contemporary religion, these questions go to the heart not only of who but of what we are as human beings. Over the last thirty years, our understandings of mind and consciousness have changed in important ways through exciting new developments in neuroscience. The author addresses this quantum shift by exploring the biology of believing. He offers sustained reflection on perception, cognition, time, emotional intelligence, knowledge and sensation. Pointing to the places where prayer and dreams intersect, this book offers a remarkable journey through philosophy, theology and culture, thereby revealing the true nature of the human condition. 288 Pages 228 x 155mm July 2014 9781780767352 Hardback £25.00

Kant and the Meaning of Religion NEW
Myths of Religion, Politics and Violence Stacey Gutkowski
The Critical Philosophy and Modern Religious Thought Terry F. Godlove, Hosfstra University
Without Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) there would probably be no modern discipline of ‘the philosophy of religion’. Kant and Religion is a subtle and penetrating attempt, by a leading contemporary philosopher of religion, to redefine and reshape the contours of his own discipline through sustained reflection on Kant’s so-called ‘humanizing project’.

The Everlasting Flame
The Religious Philosophy of Simone Weil
NEW
Zoroastrianism in History and Imagination Sarah Stewart (Ed.) SOAS, University of London
NEW
An Introduction Lissa McCullough
The French philosopher Simone Weil (1909-1943) remains in every way a thinker for our times. She was an outsider, in multiple senses, defying the usual religious categories: at once atheistic and religious; mystic and realist; sceptic and believer. Lissa McCullough here offers a reliable guide to the key concepts of Weil’s religious philosophy: good and evil, the void, gravity, grace, beauty, suffering and waiting for God. In addressing such distinctively contemporary concerns as depression, loneliness and isolation, and in writing hauntingly of God’s voluntary ‘nothingness’,Weil’s existential paradoxes continue to challenge and provoke. This is the first introductory book to show the essential coherence of her enigmatic but remarkable ideas about religion.

Sanctuaries, Cults, and Mysteries of Ancient Egypt NEW Miroslav Verner Charles University
Despite the prominence of ancient temples in the landscape of Egypt, books about them are surprisingly rare. This new and essential publication from a prominent Czech scholar answers the need for a study that goes beyond temple architecture to examine the spiritual, economic, and political aspects of these institutions and the dominant roles they played. Miroslav Verner presents a deeper and more complex study of major ancient Egyptian religious centers, their principal temples, their rise and decline, their religious doctrines, cults, rituals, feasts, and mysteries. Also discussed are the various categories of priests, the organization of the priesthood, and its daily services and customs.

Colloquial Arabic storytelling is most commonly associated with the Arabian Nights. But few people are aware of a much larger corpus of narrative texts known as popular epic: virtually none is available in translation, and so it remains almost unknown to a non-Arab public. Remke Kruk at last makes these neglected romances available to a Western audience. The Warrior Women of Islam puts a bold new complexion on gender roles and the wider perception of women in the Middle East. 304 Pages 216 x 134mm November 2013 9781848859265 Hardback £54.50 9781848859272 Paperback £14.99 library of middle east history

Drawing on examples from Judaism and Christianity, as well as the ancient world, the author shows that while systems of time facilitate the orderly function of vastly different civilizations, in Islam they have always been fundamental. The fullest account of the fascinating nexus between Islam and Time ever written, this is a major contribution to the wider history of ideas and religion. 192 Pages 216 x 134mm November 2013 9781780765426 Hardback £56.00 Library of Middle East History

The Persian, The Sufi A. Reza Arasteh
Recognizing Sufism NEW Contemplation in the Islamic Tradition
Arthur F. Buehler Victoria University of Wellington
A. Reza Arasteh explores the life and work of one of the greatest mystics who ever lived. In discussing the contexts of Persian culture out of which Rumi emerged, as well as his unique and powerful writings (including the Masnavi, Rumi’s masterpiece), the author reveals the qualities and characteristics that underlie the poet’s thinking. 192 Pages 216 x 135mm May 2014 9781780765686 Paperback £12.99

Sufism is all too often associated just with ‘mysticism’ in the West. The author of this new textbook, a former pupil of Annemarie Schimmel, suggests that conflating Sufism and mysticism is only partially valid. He shows that the vast majority of Sufi practice, both historically and in the contemporary world, has little or nothing to do with a esoteric transcendence but is rather focused on contemplative activity. Such practice might involve art, music, devotional shrine visitation – even politics and psychology. Placing Sufism in a wider Islamic contemplative context enables Arthur F Buehler to examine Sufi history, as well as current application, against a backdrop that is richer and more inclusive than that portrayed in many competing introductory surveys. 256 Pages 216 x 134mm June 2014 9781848857896 Hardback £54.50 9781848857902 Paperback £14.99

The Masnavi is the six-volume masterpiece created by one of the world’s greatest poetic geniuses, Jalaluddin Rumi (12071273). It is perhaps the single most influential piece of mystical writing ever conceived. Alan Williams here offers a novel approach to reading and understanding this great jewel of world literature. This revelatory unlocking enables Rumi’s voice and purpose to become fully transparent. 224 pp 228x155mm May 2014 9781780766256 Hardback £25.00

Muslim Shrines and Spiritual Culture in the Perso-Islamic World NEW
Urban and Rural Shrines in Tajikistan Jo-Ann Gross, College of New Jersey
The built shrines of the Perso-Islamic region are well documented and studied; less is known about the region’s sacred rural landscapes, despite their central role as charters of Islamic identity and expressions of local Muslim piety. She here charts the rich sacred landscape within the borders of present-day Tajikistan which features a vast array of both urban and rural shrines. 320 Pages 216 x 134mm June 2014 9781848856387 hardback £59.50 International Library of Iranian Studies, Vol. 31 e ebook available

Converting Persia explains how Iran was to acquire one of its defining characteristics: its Shi’ism. Under the Safavids (1501-1736 CE), Persia adopted Shi’ism as its official religion. Rula Abisaab explains how and why this specific brand of Shi’ism – urban and legally-based – was brought to the region by leading Arab ‘Ulama from Ottoman Syria, and changed the face of the region till this day.

Jonathan Curiel
Islam is a hidden ingredient in the melting pot of America. Though there are between 2 and 8 million Muslims in the USA, Islam has traditionally had little political clout compared to other minority faiths. Nonetheless it is believed to be the country’s fastest-growing religion, with a vibrant culture of theological debate. In Islam in America, Jonathan Curiel traces the story of America’s Muslims from the seventeenth-century slave trade to the eighteenth-century immigration wave to the Nation of Islam. Drawing on interviews in communities from industrial Michigan to rural California, Curiel portrays the diversity of practices, cultures and observances that make up Muslim America. He profiles the leading personalities and institutions representing the community, and explores their relationship to the wider politics of America, particularly after 9/11.This is an indispensable guide to the social life of modern Islam and the diversity of contemporary America. 224 Pages 198 x 126mm May 2014 9781848855984 Hardback £49.50 9781848855991 Paperback £12.99

From Shamanism to Sufism
Women, Islam and Culture in Central Asia NEW in paperback Razia Sultanova
Generation M Shelina Janmohamed
In this ground-breaking and original study, Razia Sultanova examines the experiences of Muslim women in the region and the ways in which religion has shaped their daily lives and continues to do so today. The book explores the fundamental interplay between religious belief and the cultural heritage of music and dance.
NEW The growing consumer power of Muslims, young Muslims in particular, is a trend that cannot be ignored. This new generation of Muslims are a tech-savvy, selfempowered, youthful group who believe that their identity encompasses both faith and modernity. For these Muslims, their faith affects everything, informing the way they consume, interact, work, and spend their leisure time. Shelina Janmohamed here explores this growing cultural phenomenon, at a time where understanding the mindset of Muslim youths, and what drives them, is critical. Exploring fashion magazines, to social networking and everyday consumer choices, this book shows how these young Muslims are not only adapting to Western consumerism, but reclaiming it as their own. Based on groundbreaking and extensive research undertaken by Ogilvy Noor, the world’s first bespoke global Islamic branding practice, Janmohamed provides a unique and timely insight into the lives, and future, of the contemporary, global Muslim population.

Islamic Movements of Europe NEW

University of Berne ‘Islam in Europe’ and ‘Islamophobia’ are subjects of vital global importance which currently preoccupy policy-makers and academics alike. New Writings on Radical Islam Kamran Bokhari
The 21st century has seen an unprecedented radicalisation of Muslims across the world. In some cases, this has led to terror and violence. Yet as the West pours huge military resources into the ‘war on terror’, we still know very little about the ideology which drives the terrorists. Now, for the first time, Kamran Bokhari has made it possible to hear and to digest today’s militant Islam in its own words. He presents a range of ideologues from across the globe, including Bin Laden’s own deputy, Ayman Zawahari. Bokhari’s carefully contextualised selection introduces us to radical Islamist thinking on a range of issues such as their perception of Western concepts of democracy, their scepticism towards the Middle East peace process and how to deal with the West. 256 Pages 216 x 134mm May 2014 9781845111304 Hardback £42.50 9781845111311 Paperback £12.99 Library of Modern Middle East Studies, Vol. 53 e ebook available

shi’i heritage series Shi‘i Muslims, with their rich intellectual and cultural heritage, have contributed significantly to the fecundity and diversity of the Islamic traditions throughout the centuries, enabling Islam to evolve and flourish both as a major religion and also as a civilisation. In spite of this, Shi‘i Islam has received little scholarly attention in the West, in medieval as well modern times. It is only in recent decades that academic interest has focused increasingly on Shi‘i Islam within the wider study of Islam. The principal objective of the Shi‘i Heritage Series, launched by The Institute of Ismaili Studies, is to enhance general knowledge of Shi‘i Islam and promote a better understanding of its history, doctrines and practices in their historical and contemporary manifestations.
The Study of Shi’i Islam NEW
History, Theology and Law Farhad Daftary & G. Miskinzoda (Eds) Both at The Institute of Ismaili Studies A series of articles proceeding from the colloquium held at The Institute of Ismaili Studies in September 2010 on the current state of Shi‘i studies, the volume aims to examine the state of the field, methodological issues, tools and problems of sources in the study of Shi‘i Islam and Islam in general, exploring ways in which they can be utilised for further development. 288 pages 216 x 134mm december 2013 9781780765068 hardback £29.50 Shi‘i Heritage Series I.B.Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies

The Institute of Ismaili Studies This comprehensive survey details the history of the Twelvers, the Ismailis, the Zaydis and the Nusayris (now commonly known in Syria as the ‘Alawis), the communities that account for almost all the Shi‘i population of the world. The result is an accessible reference book explaining the formative era of Shi‘i Islam for both academics and curious non-specialist readers. 288 pages 234 x 156mm November 2013 9781780768410 hardback £29.50 Shi‘i Heritage Series I.B.Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies

The New Jew in Film
An Introduction to Modern Jewish Philosophy
Exploring Jewishness and Judaism in Contemporary Cinema Nathan Abrams, Bangor University
Claire Elise Katz NEW Texas A&M University
In this much-needed textbook, which surveys the most prominent thinkers of the last three centuries, Claire Katz situates modern Jewish philosophy in the wider cultural and intellectual context of its day, indicating how broader currents of British, French and German thought influenced its practitioners. But she also addresses the unique ways in which being Jewish coloured their output, suggesting that a keen sense of particularity enabled the Jewish philosophers to help define the whole modern era. Intended to be used as a core undergraduate text, the book will also appeal to anyone with an interest how some of the greatest minds of the age grappled with some of its most urgent and fascinating philosophical problems.

Jewish film characters have existed almost as long as the medium itself. But around 1990, films about Jews and their representation in cinema multiplied and took on new forms, marking a radical rupture with the past. This book explores these new and changing depictions of Jews, Jewishness and Judaism, providing a wider, more representative picture of the subject than has hitherto been attempted.

José Martí, Cuban Apostle A Dialogue NEW Cintio Vitier and Daisaku Ikeda
Once called ‘the wellspring of the revolution’ by Fidel Castro, José Martí (1853-1895) is revered as one of the greatest figures in the history of Cuba. In this wide-ranging discussion of Martí’s life, work and influence, distinguished Cuban poet Cintio Vitier and prominent Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda explore their subject’s understanding of non-violence; his nationalism that was also a profound openness to difference and dialogue; his spirituality; his poetical writings; and above all his fundamental dignity, humanity and self-mastery. 208 Pages 234 x 156mm September 2013 9781848851993 Hardback £27.50 Echoes and Reflections Series

The Wild Rue of Persia NEW
In early modern England, the practice of ritual or ceremonial magic – the attempted communication with angels and demons – both reinforced and subverted existing concepts of gender. Frances Timbers studies the practice of ritual magic in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, focusing especially on gender and sexual perspectives. Using the examples of well-known individuals who set themselves up as magicians (including John Dee, Simon Forman and William Lilly), as well as unpublished diaries and journals, literature and legal records, this book provides a unique analysis of early modern ceremonial magic from a gender perspective. 304 Pages 216 x 134mm February 2014 9781780765594 Hardback £56.00 International Library of Historical Studies, Vol. 92

A Cultural History of Witchcraft John Callow, Lancaster University NEW
From the Salem witch trials to the macabre novels of Dennis Wheatley, John Callow brings the twilight world of the witch, mage and necromancer to vivid and fascinating life. He takes us into a shadowy landscape where, in an age before modern drugs, the onset of sudden illness was readily explained by malevolent spellcasting. Witchcraft has profoundly shaped the western imagination, and endures in the forms of modern-day Wicca and paganism. This is an enthralling account of this fascinating aspect of the western cultural experience.

Materiality and Transcendence in Contemporary Religions Diana Espirito Santo and Nico Tassi (Eds) The analysis of religion has often placed an emphasis on beliefs and ideologies, prioritizing these elements over those of the material world. Through the ethnographic analysis of a variety of contemporary religious practices, Making Spirits questions the presumed separation of spirit and matter, and sheds light on the dynamics between spiritual and material domains. 272 Pages 216 x 134mm July 2013 9781848857964 Hardback £59.50 Library of Modern Religion, Vol. 20
