CONTENTS

Message from the Editor: The I.B.Tauris religious studies list was built according to two guiding principles. First, that it should be diverse, plural and inclusive so as to represent the totality of human religiosity and discussions about faith and belief. Second, that it should be determinedly non-confessional – though at the same time sensitively empathic and non-reductive – in order to reflect the best analytical and objective study of religion as a human science within the larger field of the humanities. Over the last dozen years we have tried to shape our commissioning and acquisitions around those twin goals. My hope is that the books of the current season, while exhibiting the desired characteristics of both plurality and platinum scholarship, will at the same time prove to our readers to be stimulating, thought-provoking and boundary defining. An informed study of different religions has never been more important given terrible conflict in the Middle East and the persecution, displacement and attempted eradication by Islamic State of religious minorities. Belief is here no academic matter, but rather one of life or death.

An Introduction Alexander Wynne

An Introduction Will Sweetman

Dhammachai Tipitaka Project, Thailand

University of Otago

In this comprehensive textbook, Wynne shows that the story of Buddhism as a global system of belief begins with the life of the Buddha in northern India in the fifth century. He discusses the many new advances that have been made with regard to its origins, and traces the ways that formative Indian doctrines helped shape the features of later Asian Buddhism.

Sweetman’s nuanced text helps unravel the complex strands of one of the world’s remarkable systems of belief, identifying the chief ingredients of Hinduism’s rich and distinctive flavour. Offering a broadly thematic and historical overview of thought and practice, the author explores the theological and philosophical abundance of this multifaceted religion.

Radical Prophet

A Cultural History of Angels NEW in paperback Valery Rees, London School of Economics Valery Rees offers the first comprehensive history of these beautiful, enigmatic and sometimes dangerous beings, whose existence and actions have been charted across the eons of time and civilization. Whether exploring the fevered visions of Ezekiel and biblical cherubim; Persian genii; Arab djinn; Islamic archangels; or the austere and haunting icons of Andrei Rublev, the author shows that the ubiquity of these celestial messengers reveals something profound, if not about God or the devil, then about ourselves: our perennial preoccupation with the transcendent. 288 Pages 226x155mm September 2015 9781784534318 Paperback £12.99 / $20.00 e ebook available

Christianity and Monasticism in Aswan and Nubia Edited by Gawdat Gabra and Hany Takla NEW

Christopher Rowland University of Oxford

Christianity began with the conviction that the old order was finished. The mysterious, elusive and charismatic figure of Jesus proclaimed that a new era, the Kingdom of God, was dawning.Yet despite its success, and the conversion of the empire which had executed its founder, the religion he inspired was soon domesticated, its counter-cultural radicalism tamed, as the Church attempted to control both its doctrines and its followers. Christopher Rowland here shows that this was never the whole story. At the margins, around the edges, sometimes off the religious map, the apocalyptic flame of the New Testament continued to burn. This book gives full weight to a remarkable strain of radical religion that simply refuses to die. 272 Pages 228x155mm September 2016 9781784532659 Hardback £25.00 / $39.00 e ebook available

The Papacy, Influence and Power Stella Fletcher, Warwick University

In this first general history of monasticism since 1900, G.R. Evans explores the cloistered communities and individuals who have aspired to the ascetic ideal in their religious life, assessing the impact they have made on the wider church and its practices. She discusses some of the best known names in Christian history – including Cuthbert, Columba, Hilda of Whitby, Peter Abelard and Thomas Merton – and traces the monastic impulse from its beginnings in the Egyptian desert through the Rule of St Benedict, Cluny’s foundation in 910, the austerity of the Cistercians, the legacy of women’s houses, the critique of Luther and Calvin, Trappists and Catholic reform, up to the present-day ecumencial Taizé community. 336 Pages 226x155mm December 2015 9781848853768 Hardback £40.00 / $59.50 e ebook available

i.b.tauris history of the christian church General Editor: G.R. Evans, University of Cambridge

‘The new I.B.Tauris History of the Christian Church has quickly established an enviable reputation for impressive scholarship’ – Journal of Ecclesiastical History the church in the early modern age

NEW

C. Scott Dixon, Queen’s University, Belfast

The years 1450-1650 were a momentous period for the development of Christianity. C. Scott Dixon explores how the ideas that went into the making of early modern Christianity re-oriented the Church to such an extent that they gave rise to new versions of the religion. He shows how the varieties and ambivalences of late medieval theology were now replaced by dogmatic certainties, where the institutions of Christian churches became more effective and ‘modern’, staffed by well-trained clergy.

A Short History of

the English Revolution and the Civil Wars David J Appleby

Medieval Christianity G.R. Evans

University of Nottingham

Ranging widely, from the fall of Rome to the ideas of the Reformation, the author addresses vital topics like the appeal of monasticism, the lure of the Crusades, the rise of the friars and the acute crisis of heresy. As Evans reveals, medieval Christianity was shaped above all by its promise of salvation or eternal perdition.

The author creatively explores the tensions that led to the outbreak of hostilities, and guides the reader through the twists and turns of events, from Edgehill to Naseby (1645) and from the First Bishops’ War in Scotland in 1639 to Parliament’s daring amphibious assault on royalist Barbados in 1651.

Halvor Moxnes

Helen L Parish University of Reading

University of Oslo The author shows how the writings of the New Testament came into being from oral transmission and then became the pillar of a great world religion. He explores their many varied usages in music, liturgy, art, language and literature. In discussing its textual origins, as well as its later reception, Moxnes shows above all how the New Testament has been employed both as a tool for liberation and as a means of power and control.

Drawing on the most recent historiography, Helen L. Parish locates the Protestant Reformation in its many cultural, social and political contexts. She assesses the Reformers’ impact on art and architecture; on notions of authority, scripture and tradition; and – reflecting on the extent to which the printing press helped spread Reformation ideas – on oral, print and written culture. 256 Pages 216 x 134mm March 2016 9781780766102 Paperback £10.99 / $15.95 9781780766096 Hardback £58.00 / $94.00 e ebook available

A History of Life after Death

Philip C. Almond University of Queensland Ranging across time and space, Philip Almond here takes his readers on a remarkable journey to worlds both of torment and delight. He travels to the banks of the Styx, where Charon the grizzled boatman ferries a departing spirit across the river only if a gold obol is first placed for payment on the tongue of its corpse. He transports us to the legendary Isles of the Blessed, walks the hallowed ground of the Elysian Fields and plumbs the murky depths of Tartarus, primordial dungeon of the Titans. The pitiable souls of the damned are seen to clog the soot-filled caverns of Lucifer even as the elect ascend to Paradise. Including medieval fears for the fate of those consumed by cannibals, early modern ideas about the Last Day and modern scientific explorations of the domains of the dead, this first full treatment of the afterlife in Western thought evokes many rich imaginings of Heaven, Hell, Purgatory and Limbo. 288 Pages 216x135mm April 2016 9781784534967 Hardback £25.00 / $39.50 e ebook available

Dharma

NEW

The Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh Traditions of India Edited by Veena R. Howard, Univeristy of Oregon

Dharma is central to all the indigenous religious traditions of India, which cannot adequately be understood apart from it. Often translated as ‘ethics’, ‘religion’ or ‘religious law’, dharma possesses elements of each of these but is not confined to any single category. Neither is it the equivalent of what many in the West might usually consider to be ‘a philosophy’. This much needed analysis of the history and heritage of dharma shows that it is instead a multi-faceted religious force, or paradigm, that has defined and that continues to shape South Asian civilization in a whole multitude of forms. Experts in the fields of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh studies here bring fresh insights to dharma in terms both of its distinctiveness and its commonality. 272 Pages 216 x 134mm March 2016 9781784532642 Paperback £17.99 / $30.00 9781784532635 Hardback £56.00 / $90.00 e ebook available

Religious Minorities of the Modern Middle East This volume explores the origins and articulations of the fundamentalist mindset, addresses the subject from the comparative perspective of different religions, including Judaism and Hinduism. Ethics, History and Global Politics NEW

The Role of Religious and Moral Values in the Modern World Robin W. Lovin, Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton

Modern thought has been reluctant to introduce questions of belief and value into political discourse. This book argues that while cultural and religious barriers are real, they need not set limits to our moral concerns. To retain its integrity, religion must commit itself to political pluralism and institutional variety. Ranging across the history of ethics and Western philosophy, this is a fresh and imaginative reading of moral value and its place in public life and political order. 288 Pages 210 x 148mm september 2016 9781848854673 Paperback £17.99 / $29.50 9781848854666 Hardback £62.00 / $99.00 e ebook available

New Muslims, New Style Shelina Janmohamed

The teachings, style and impact of the Qur’an have always been matters of controversy, among both Muslims and non-Muslims. But in a modern context of intercultural sensitivity, what the Qur’an says and means are perhaps more urgent questions than ever before. This major new book by one of the world’s finest Islamic scholars responds to that urgency. Building on his earlier groundbreaking work, the author challenges misinterpretations of particular Qur’anic verses from whatever quarter. He addresses the infamous ‘sword’ verse, frequently cited as a justification for jihad. He also questions the ‘tribute’ verse, associated with the Muslim state subjugating Jews and Christians; and the idea of Paradise in the Qur’an, often viewed by the West as emphasising merely physical pleasures, or used by Islamic fighters as their just reward for holy war. 288 Pages 228x155mm June 2016 9781780763651 Hardback £29.99 / $45.00 e ebook available

The Vision of Rumi

Revealing the Masnavi, Persia’s Great Masterpiece Alan Williams, University of Manchester The Masnavi is the six-volume masterpiece created by one of the world’s greatest poetic geniuses, Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273). It is perhaps the single most influential piece of mystical writing ever conceived. Though the Persian poet Rumi is now hugely popular in the West, his most famous oeuvre still remains enigmatic. Alan Williams here offers a novel approach to reading and understanding this great jewel of world literature. This revelatory unlocking enables Rumi’s voice and purpose to become fully transparent. 224 Pages 228x155mm June 2016 9781780766256 Hardback £25.00 / $39.00 e ebook available

From Byzantine to Islamic Egypt

Religion, Identity and Politics after the Arab Conquest Maged S.A. Mikhail California State University, Fullerton NEW in paperback

Victoria University of Wellington

Sufism is all too often associated just with ‘mysticism’ in the West. The author of this new textbook, a former pupil of Annemarie Schimmel, suggests that conflating Sufism and mysticism is only partially valid. He shows that the vast majority of Sufi practice, both historically and in the contemporary world, has little or nothing to do with a esoteric transcendence but is rather focused on contemplative activity. Such practice might involve art, music, devotional shrine visitation – even politics and psychology. Placing Sufism in a wider Islamic contemplative context enables Arthur F. Buehler to examine Sufi history, as well as current application, against a backdrop that is richer and more inclusive than that portrayed in many competing introductory surveys. 256 Pages 216 x 134mm June 2016 9781848857902 Paperback £14.99 / $28.00 9781848857896 Hardback £58.00 / $94.00 e ebook available

Maged Mikhail traces how the largely agrarian Egyptian society responded to the influx of Arabic and Islam, the means by which the Coptic Church constructed its sectarian identity, the Islamisation of the administrative classes and how these factors converged to create a new medieval society. 448 Pages 216 x 134mm November 2015 9781784534813 Paperback £16.99 / $28.00 e ebook available

Revisionist Religion, Agnosticism and Disbelief in the Modern Arab World Ralph M Coury, Fairfield University, Connecticut (Ed.)

Arab debates about the critical relationship between religion and modernity began in the early nineteenth century. Such debates are now integral to the struggle for power between a variety of political groups and their opponents, and are vital to understanding the modern Middle East. This unique volume introduces the writings of the Muslim and Arab Christian revisionist ‘free-thinkers’ who have tried to redefine the relationship. Authors from the nineteenth century to the present are included. Some are avowed believers, even if they adopt positions many might regard as heretical; others are openly agnostic and atheistic. 320 Pages 234 x 156 March 2016 9781784533373 Hardback £62.00 / $99.00 Library of Modern Middle East Studies e ebook available

Juan Cole examines Shi’i Islam as a world religion that has faced modernity on its own terms. He explores the little known history of Shi‘i communities as far afield as Bahrain and India, giving attention as well to important centres such as Lebanon, Iraq and, of course, Iran. He demonstrates the way in which Shi‘is have sought to define space and time as sacred, and to defend those spaces from encroachments by the Other, whether that Other be Sunni Arab, Hindu or European Christian. 272 Pages 198 x 126mm June 2016 9781780769745 Paperback £11.99 / $19.95 e ebook available

The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London

The Persian philosopher Ibn Sina, or Avicenna, was arguably the greatest master of Aristotelian thought in the Muslim world. The symbolical ‘Poem on the Soul’ (Qasidat al-nafs) is traditionally attributed to him. A highly significant commentary on the Qasida was written by Ali b. Muhammad b. al-Walid. In his view, the poem encapsulates Tayyibi beliefs, whose doctrines bear striking parallels with late antique Gnosticism. This book presents the Arabic text of Ibn al-Walid’s commentary, ‘The Useful Epistle’ (al-Risala al-mufida), alongside an English translation and extended introduction. It offers invaluable insight into the intricacies of Muslim thought and a deeper understanding of Avicenna’s legacy.

Hinduism and the Divine NEW

A New Introduction to Hindu Theology Rita D. Sherma

Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley

Sweetman’s nuanced text helps unravel the complex strands of one of the world’s remarkable systems of belief, identifying the chief ingredients of Hinduism’s rich and distinctive flavour. Offering a broadly thematic and historical overview of the thought and practice, the author explores the theological and philosophical abundance of this multi-faceted religion. 264 Pages 216 x 134mm May 2016 9781848853287 Paperback £14.99 / $24.50 9781848853270 Hardback £58.00 / $94.00 I.B.Tauris Introductions to Religion e ebook available

With no fixed boundaries between theology and philosophy, or the sacred and the secular, Hinduism arguably has more theological oppositions and self-contradictions than any other religious tradition. Navigating such complexity is challenging. A book that explores the multi-faceted character of Hindu theology is much needed, and in her authoritative introduction Rita Sherma explores these nuances and elusive dichotomies in depth, thereby doing full justice to the great richness of Hinduism’s cultural legacy. She outlines the general features of Hindu theology and discusses the various characteristics of the divine, whether in the persons of Shiva,Vishnu or Mahadevi (the feminine manifestation of God). 256 Pages 216 x 134mm July 2016 9781784535322 Paperback £16.99 / $29.00 9781784535315 Hardback £58.00 / $94.00 e ebook available

Chinese Philosophy An Introduction

Indian Philosophy The Essential Writings Jeffery D. Long NEW

Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania

NEW

Ronnie L Littlejohn Belmont University, Tennessee

The philosophical traditions of China have arguably influenced more human beings than any other. As Ronnie L Littlejohn shows, these traditions have for thousands of years formed the bedrock of the longest continuing civilization on the planet; and Chinese philosophy has profoundly shaped the institutions, social practices and psychological character of East and Southeast Asia. The author here surveys the key texts and philosophical systems of Chinese thinkers in a completely original and illuminating way. Ranging from the Han dynasty to the present, he discusses the six classical schools of Chinese philosophy; the arrival of Buddhism in China and its distinctive development; the central figures and movements from the end of the Tang dynasty to the introduction into China of Western thought; and the impact of Chinese philosophers on their equivalents in the West.

Long offers a judicious and wide-ranging selection of the key texts that form the basis for the major schools of Indian philosophy. Chronologically structured with up-to-date translations and a focus on modern as well as classical and pre-classical texts, the author presents the continuing contributions of Indian philosophy to international thought.

Embracing the Darkness A Cultural History of Witchcraft John Callow, Lancaster University

NEW

John Callow brings the twilight world of the witch, mage and necromancer to vivid and fascinating life. He takes us into a shadowy landscape where, in an age before modern drugs, the onset of sudden illness was readily explained by malevolent spellcasting. And where the hoot of an owl or shriek of a fox became the desolate cries of unseen spirits. Witchcraft has profoundly shaped the western imagination, and endures in the forms of modern-day Wicca and paganism. This book is an enthralling account of this fascinating aspect of the western cultural experience. 264 Pages 234 x 156 June 2016 9781845114695 Hardback £19.50 / $39.95 e ebook available

NEW

A Journey through the Supernatural Landscapes of the British Isles Carolyne Larrington University of Oxford

In this sparkling new history, Carolyne Larrington explores the diverse ways in which a myriad of fantastical beings has moulded the nation’s cultural history. Fairies, elves and goblins here tread purposefully, sometimes malignly, over an eerie landscape that also conceals brownies, selkies, trows, knockers, boggarts, land-wights, Jack o’Lanterns, Barguests, the sinister Nuckleavee and Black Shuck. Ranging from Shetland to Jersey and from Ireland to East Anglia, while evoking the Wild Hunt, the ghostly bells of Lyonesse and the dread fenlands haunted by Grendel, this is a book that will captivate all those who long for the wild places: the mountains and chasms where giants lie in wait.

29

This new ethnographic study of zar in Egypt is based on the author’s two years of fieldwork and firsthand knowledge as a participant, and her collection and analysis of more than three hundred zar songs, allowing her to access levels of meaning that had previously been overlooked. 176 Pages 230x150mm May 2016 9789774166976 Hardback £24.95 The American University in Cairo Press

Eternal Chalice

The Enduring Legend of the Holy Grail Juliette Wood, University of Wales, Cardiff NEW in paperback

The sacred allure of the Holy Grail has fascinated writers and ensnared knights for over a thousand years. From Malory to Monty Python, the eternal chalice has the richest associations of any icon in British myth. Juliette Wood here reveals the elusive and embedded significance of the Grail story in popular consciousness – as myth, medieval romance, tangible holy relic and finally as the centre of an esoteric theory of global conspiracy. She shows how various interpretations of the Grail, over the centuries, reflect changing cultural needs and desires. 256 Pages 216 x 134mm June 2016 9781784535209 Paperback £14.99 / $19.95 e ebook available
